Alex Jones has shared her “funny” experience with Tom Jones, which saw her sneaking off to a Premier Inn. The One Show presenter, originally from Ammanford in Carmarthenshire, was talking on the Binge! podcast which she co-hosts alongside McFly drummer Harry Judd.

During the entertainment podcast, the BBC presenter shared a story about the time she encountered Welsh music legend, none other than Sir Tom Jones. The anecdote saw Alex and her friend, Tess, begin their night at the prestigious and iconic Balmoral Hotel, right at the heart of the Scottish capital. For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter.

“Shall I tell you a funny story about Tom Jones?” she began. “I was in Edinburgh doing a concert, and the next night, Tom Jones was doing a concert in the castle. So, my friend Tess and I were in the bar in The Balmoral, which is like a jazzy hotel, and we weren’t staying there but we’d gone there because we heard the burgers were good.

“So, we’re having a G&T and a burger in the bar. And Mark, who’s Tom Jones’ son also his manager, comes down. And he’s like, ‘Alex, how are you?’, and I said, ‘Oh, I’m very good, Mark. How are you?’.

“And he said, ‘Hey, Dad’s performing tonight in the castle, can you stay? Do you want to come?’. So he rang Tom and said, ‘Tom, Alex is down here, come down to the bar’. So he came down and he said, ‘Are you going to come to the concert then?’.”

Commenting on the slight change in her accent while sharing the story, Alex said: “Why am I putting on a Welsh accent? When I already have one. That is so weird.” But she continued: “We get in the minibus with Tom Jones – me, Tess, and off we go up to the castle. It’s a brilliant concert.”

Tom Jones had invited the presenter and her friend to watch him perform
“The Welsh Mafia,” Harry interjected. “Welsh Mafia,” Alex agreed. “We have a whale of a time,” she said. “Tom’s doing his thing. At the end of the night he says, ‘Don’t go now, we’ll get the car together’. So we get back in the minibus and they bring us back down from the castle into town.

“And they drop us off at The Balmoral because neither of us said we’re not actually staying there. And then we had to get an Uber to the Premier Inn round the corner.”

Many have responded to a social media post which shares the clip, with many describing the anecdote as “brilliant”. “Such a good story,” another said. Another responded with: “That’s hilarious”, in which Alex Jones responded herself with: “There’s more where that came from”.
