BBC Only Connect’s Victoria Coren Mitchell speaks out after fans spot ‘error’

Only Connect presenter Victoria Coren Mithell has spoken out after viewers spotted an apparent continuity error on the BBC Two quiz show during an episode that aired this week

Presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell addressed confusion among Only Connect viewers this week after an apparent continuity error was spotted in a recent episode.

Victoria, 52, welcomed back two teams on Monday night’s episode of the BBC quiz show. The teams competed against each other in a series of general knowledge rounds in the hope of progressing to the next stage of the contest.

The host was seen wearing a pink floral outfit and sporting red painted nails during her introduction, in which she jokingly mentioned using AI to create a more exciting message. However, fans noted that her appearance changed just moments later, as reported by the Express.

She said in the introduction: “Good evening. This week I invited the BBC’s in-house AI remarks generator to look beyond ordinary light entertainment, panel shows and quizzes, and trawl other genres to come up with an introduction suitable for a big popular ratings hit.”

Her painted nails were visible as she picked up a phone to read the generated introduction. Victoria continued, “It came up with this, ‘Good evening and welcome to Connect-Enders, a world of bitter rivalries and long-running feuds. Where devious characters are forever coming and going, amid a bewildering maelstrom of Byzantine promiscuity’.”

However, just moments later, the host’s nails were bare, despite wearing the same outfit. It wasn’t long before viewers spotted the discrepancy and took to X – formerly known as Twitter – to voice their confusion. As reported by the outlet, one viewer wrote: “Watching #onlyconnect on delay and in [Victoria’s] intro she has red nails holding the phone, yet later with the question cards, no nail varnsh. The viewers of this show are far too observant and analytical to miss something like that continuity!” Another queried: “Did anyone else notice Victoria’s nails?”

A third chimed in: “[Victoria] hang on, how long does it take to film a show. At the beginning you have red nails and then a few moments later they have gone #OnlyConnect.” Amid the confusion, Victoria responded to that tweet, offering a potential explanation. She wrote: “What was the intro? There was one where I had to record a whole different start on a different day because I made a joke about Strictly which spooked the powers that be. Sounds like must have been this one!”

It isn’t the first time the presenter has stirred up a storm online over an episode of the quiz show. Not one to shy away from a risqué joke, she recently joked about Michael Portillo. As previously reported, as she wrapped up an episode last month, she cheekily said: “Coming up next on BBC Two is another episode in that wonderful series sponsored by the RSPB, where celebrities look after birds before handing them on to other celebrities to raise awareness of struggling avian numbers.”

She continued: “I have so enjoyed watching the big names of BBC Two passing their feathered dependents onto other presenters that I’ve decided to join in myself. Tonight, I will eagerly be taking several swallows from Michael Portillo.” The joke left viewers stunned, with one even claiming they had been left “traumatised”.
