Fans of Gavin and Stacey are going wild after the BBC dropped the trailer for the much anticipated Christmas special, with viewers hoping to finally get some answers on Nessa and Smithy
Fans are going wild after the BBC finally dropped the trailer for the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special.
The brand new episode, which will air on Christmas Day, will pick up from the 2019 cliffhanger, which left viewers reeling as Nessa got down on one knee to propose to Smithy. It became the most watched TV comedy show since Only Fools and Horses in 2002, and saw fans desperate to pick up where they left off to find out what happened with the unlikely couple.
Fans couldn’t contain themselves, especially after seeing Ruth Jones’ Nessa make a special cameo on the Strictly final to read out the terms and conditions in character. They took to social media to share their excitement.
One wrote: “Full goosebumps for the Gavin and Stacey trailer. I am so excited!”. Another said: “The excitement is real—can’t wait to see how they wrap it all up!” Someone else said: “I’m so excited! Can’t wait for Christmas day,” while a fourth agreed, commenting: “I am ridiculously excited for the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special.”

One fan posted: “OMFG Nessa YOU ABSOLUTE LEGEND!!! We are gonna be a mess on Christmas day.. the last ever Gavin & Stacey !!” A sixth fan shared: “Honestly more excited for Gavin and Stacey & Eastenders than Christmas itself.”
In the trailer, fans see Stacey, played by Joanna Page, chat with her husband Gavin while he’s at work. Played by Mathew Horne, Gavin chats with his wife about their memories together from the past in 2000s, with Stacey saying: “Oh, I’m absolutely buzzing, I am. A whole weekend away, just me and you!”
Gavin mysteriously replies: “Well, yeah, except it’s not just me and you, is it?” Other familiar faces then start to enter, with James Corden’s Smithy calling Gavin Gaviscon, Pam and Mick (Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb) can be seen getting the table ready for Christmas dinner. Pam’s wearing her signature rollers and can be seen dressed in pink and hurrying around, while laid back Michael leisurely strolls around.

Neil the Baby is warned to behave by his mum Nessa, who says: “Pass me those nunchucks,” to Stacey, with Neil looking on mischievously. Gwen brings up ‘that’ fishing trip with Bryn, hilariously accusing them of “tearing the family apart” – fans will be on the edge of their seats hoping to finally find out what went on.
Dawn (Julia Davis) and Pete (Adrian Scarborough) are still bickering after all this time, with Dawn calling her husband a “despicable little rat” at one point. The families can then be seen having a drunken party in Pamela and Mick’s house. Nessa and Smithy are shown looking extremely close and flirtatious. Is this a sign that the pair actually got together? We’ll have to wait until Christmas Day to find out.
