Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have confirmed that they will be jetting off to Nigeria next month – an apparent imitation of a royal tour.

The Defence Headquarters [DHQ] announced that the couple will be visiting in May and revealed that they will be meeting with Service members and taking on a host of cultural activities during their trip.

The announcement of the visit comes after Nigeria, along with Colombia and Israel, are now considered as new arrivals at the Invictus Games. After previously revealing in her podcast Archetypes that she has Nigerian ancestry, the trip is a likely “must” for Meghan.

The trip is set to take place just days after Harry’s appearance in the UK, where he will attend a special ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. Meghan is thought to not be joining Harry in the UK, instead opting to join him on the Africa trip just two days later.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has spoken out about their forthcoming visit to Nigeria, stating that it makes sense for them to visit.

Although some could be led to believe that the visit – which bares resemblance to a royal tour – could mean that the couple wish to return as working royals, the expert added that Harry has “no desire to do so”.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mr Fitzwilliams said: “It’s [the visit to Nigeria] a very good face saver with Meghan not coming to Britain and shows a bit of PR nous.”

Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior working royals at the start of 2020, and now reside in the US with their two children, Archie, four, and Lilibet, two.

Harry’s trip to the UK next month marks his second visit this year. The Duke of Sussex, 39, travelled to the UK shortly after King Charles’s cancer diagnosis was made public – although Meghan remained in California with their children.

Meghan last visited the UK in 2022, with their children also said to have last visited their father’s home country earlier that year.
