Prince Harry lashes ‘lies, abuse’ spread on social media

Prince Harry took a strong stand against the dangers of misinformation and hate speech on social media during his recent appearance at the “Responsible Digital Future” forum in Bogota, Colombia. Speaking on the first day of his and Meghan Markle’s four-day tour of the South American country, the Duke of Sussex addressed the real-world consequences of online behavior, particularly on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), which is owned by billionaire Elon Musk.

Harry emphasized the profound impact that false information and toxic behavior online can have on society, urging those with influence to take greater responsibility. “People are acting on information that isn’t true. It comes down to all of us to be able to spot the true from the fake,” Harry told the audience at EAN University, where the forum was held. He continued, “For as long as people are allowed to spread lies, abuse, harass, then social cohesion as we know it has completely broken down.”

While some media outlets speculated that Harry’s comments were in response to recent violent riots in the UK, following the tragic murders of three children in Southport, the prince’s message was broader. He pointed to the many instances where online misinformation and hate have led to real-world violence, such as the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol.

Harry has been an outspoken critic of the unchecked influence of social media in recent years, particularly concerning the bigotry and bullying he and Meghan have faced online. Their Archewell Foundation, named after their son Archie, has been actively working to combat these issues and promote safer, more ethical online spaces.

“It doesn’t matter where you live. It doesn’t matter who you are,” Harry stated. “Either you personally, or someone you know, is a victim to what’s happening online. And that’s something we can actively work on every day to remedy.” He further stressed that information integrity is a “fundamental right,” which is why he and Meghan were motivated to participate in the Responsible Digital Future forum.

The event brought together experts and activists to discuss ways to make social media networks safer and more ethical for users, focusing on spreading positive values rather than hate. The forum was a significant part of Harry and Meghan’s visit to Colombia, which has drawn comparisons to the international royal tours carried out by senior members of the British royal family. However, unlike those tours, this visit was not an official royal engagement, as the couple stepped back from their roles as working royals in 2020.

As their tour continues, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to addressing the challenges posed by digital platforms and advocating for a more responsible and compassionate online world.
