Patrick Mahomes: We’re not just back-to-back champs. We’re back-to-back Leap Year champs too

LAS VEGAS — Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Andy Reid have solidified the Kansas City Chiefs as a dynasty. We’re not just back-to-back champs. We’re back-to-back Leap Year champs too

They’re already setting their sights on a three-peat.

First, they had to achieve a remarkable feat: becoming the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions in 19 years.

Mahomes ensured it, orchestrating another spectacular comeback on football’s grandest stage in the heart of America’s entertainment capital.

Mahomes delivered a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime, leading the Chiefs to a thrilling 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, securing their status as the NFL’s ninth repeat Super Bowl champions.

With pop sensation Taylor Swift cheering on her boyfriend Kelce from a suite, the Chiefs clinched their third title in five years, a remarkable achievement that places them among the league’s most illustrious franchises.

“Well, you know the goal has always been to get three,” Kelce exclaimed on stage after sharing a celebratory kiss with Swift. “But we couldn’t have gotten here without that second win and carrying that target on our backs all year. … How about that? We now have the opportunity to go for three in a row.”

The NFL’s first-ever Super Bowl in Las Vegas was initially a lackluster, error-strewn affair that only gained momentum in the back-and-forth fourth quarter and overtime. It marked the second occasion in 58 Super Bowls that the game was tied after regulation, and the first to be played under new overtime rules ensuring both teams had possession.

The Chiefs (15-6) found themselves trailing 22-19 after Jake Moody’s 27-yard field goal on the first possession of overtime. However, Mahomes spearheaded a remarkable turnaround, orchestrating yet another impressive comeback in a rematch of the Super Bowl four years prior.

Mahomes scrambled for 8 yards on fourth-and-1 to keep the Chiefs’ hopes alive, then dashed for another 19 yards to set up the winning touchdown, which came 14 minutes and 57 seconds into the extra period — just moments before what would have been a second overtime.

“Given all the adversity we’ve faced this season, to come through tonight… I’m immensely proud of the guys,” said Mahomes, who earned his third Super Bowl MVP award. “This is incredible. Legendary.”

Following his connection with an open Hardman, the Chiefs rushed onto the field as red-and-yellow confetti rained down.

Mahomes and Reid are now halfway to emulating Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, who captured six championships in 20 years together with the New England Patriots, most recently achieving back-to-back victories in the 2003-04 seasons.

At 28, Mahomes becomes the fourth starting quarterback to secure three Super Bowl wins, joining the esteemed company of Brady, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, and Troy Aikman, and is the second youngest to achieve this feat.

“I’m going to revel in this tonight, celebrate at the parade, and then begin the journey to return to this game next year,” Mahomes declared. “I’ll do whatever it takes to make it back to this game next year. Three-peat.”

The most notable moment of the first half came when a frustrated Kelce collided with Reid on the sideline, momentarily pushing back the Chiefs’ 65-year-old coach after a fumble by teammate Isiah Pacheco inside the red zone during the second quarter.

“You guys caught that?” Kelce remarked. “I’ll keep it between us unless my ‘mic’d up’ recording spills the beans. I was just expressing my love for him.”

The action intensified following a critical mistake by San Francisco’s special teams, which led to Mahomes’ 16-yard touchdown pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling, giving the Chiefs a 13-10 lead.

Brock Purdy and the 49ers (14-6) responded, but they failed to make enough plays, denying Mr. Irrelevant the opportunity to transition from the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft to Super Bowl champion.

“We have the offense to score touchdowns, and I failed to put the team in position to do that,” Purdy lamented.

Niners wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw and caught a touchdown, joining Eagles quarterback Nick Foles as the only players to achieve both feats in a Super Bowl.

After Moody’s 53-yard field goal put the Niners ahead 19-16 with 1:53 remaining, Mahomes and Kelce went to work. Mahomes found Kelce for a crucial 22-yard gain, setting up Harrison Butker’s game-tying field goal, a 29-yarder with 3 seconds left.

A holding penalty on Kansas City’s Trent McDuffie extended San Francisco’s opening drive in overtime, and Purdy made crucial throws to drive the 49ers to the Chiefs’ 9-yard line. However, San Francisco had to settle for a field goal.

Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and the Niners stormed to a 10-0 lead, but this was no obstacle for Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. They’ve trailed by 10 points in all three of their victories, including last year’s 38-35 triumph over Philadelphia.

Although Mahomes struggled initially and threw an interception, he once again showcased his brilliance when it mattered most. He completed 34 of 46 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns.

The Chiefs were far from dominant during the regular season, entering the playoffs as the AFC’s No. 3 seed. They triumphed over Buffalo and Baltimore in the postseason, marking Mahomes’ first road playoff victories, and entered the Super Bowl as 2 1/2-point underdogs according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

“The Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs. Remember that,” Mahomes asserted.

They became the first team to win consecutive Super Bowls as underdogs, with the Philadelphia Eagles slightly favored a year ago.

The game turned when San Francisco’s Ray-Ray McCloud failed to secure a punt that ricocheted off teammate Darrell Luter Jr.’s leg, allowing the Chiefs to recover at the 49ers’ 16-yard line, leading to Mahomes’ decisive touchdown pass to Valdes-Scantling.

The Niners responded on the subsequent possession with Purdy finding Jennings for a 10-yard touchdown, giving them a 16-13 lead. Moody’s extra-point attempt was blocked.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan took a gamble on fourth-and-3 from the Chiefs’ 15-yard line, opting not to settle for a tying field goal. Purdy connected with George Kittle for a 4-yard gain before finding Jennings for the score.

Shanahan’s Super Bowl coaching record now stands at 0-2, with an overall record of 0-3, including a loss when he served as the offensive coordinator for Atlanta. That game saw Brady and the Patriots rally from a 28-3 deficit to win in overtime.

“When you’re up against guys like Tom Brady and Pat Mahomes, you never feel secure with a lead. Those guys are two of the best to ever play the game,” Shanahan acknowledged.

Numerous celebrities were in attendance as the NFL brought its marquee event to this renowned gambling hub — a concept once considered taboo. Jay-Z, LeBron James, and Paul McCartney were among the luminaries in the crowd.
