Crown Prince Haakon of Norway has spoken for the first time since news emerged that his stepson was arrested last Sunday after a serious incident in Oslo.

Marius Borg Høiby – the eldest son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit – was briefly detained after an alleged altercation in an apartment in Frogner.

The 27-year-old faces preliminary charges of bodily harm and criminal damage, one stage short of formal charges but has since been released.

Yesterday, the heir to the Norwegian throne, who’s currently in Paris for the Olympic Games, broke his silence regarding the incident and called it a “serious matter”.

Haakon told Norwegian reporters: “It is a serious matter when the police are involved in the way they are, but at the same time it is not right for me to go into the details of the case.”

The Crown Prince said his wife did not join him in Paris and stayed at home, adding: “In our family, as in all families, it is sometimes important to be there. This time it was me who went while she stayed at home.”

While it was previously confirmed by the Norwegian Palace that Mette-Marit had postponed her planned trip to Paris, the reason for the postponement was not given.

Marius is under suspicion for causing bodily harm and criminal damage, Oslo police said on Wednesday.

He reportedly spent more than 30 hours in custody before being released on Monday.

Marius’s defence lawyer is Øyvind Bratlien, who is said to be an expert on high-profile criminal cases.

Mette-Marit’s eldest son has no royal title or official duties as when he turned 20 in 2017, it was announced that he would be stepping away from public life and his profile was removed from the Royal Family’s official website.
