Meghan Markle gives family update almost five years after admitting ‘I’m not okay’

Half a decade on since Meghan Markle revealed to the world that she wasn’t okay, the Duchess of Sussex has shared a new family update with fans during her trip to Nigeria

Five years on since Meghan Markle candidly admitted to the world that she wasn’t okay, the Duchess has issued a new positive update about her life during her recent visit to Nigeria with husband Prince Harry.

The 42-year-old mum of two previously opened up about the pressures of life in the spotlight during an interview with Tom Bradby back in 2019, in which she told the ITV news anchor that she had suffered from the negative attention from the press during her pregnancy and the first few months of son Archie’s life.

Speaking at the time, she said: “Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot.

“So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s um…yeah. I guess, also thank you for asking because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”

Tom then went on to ask if it “would be fair” to say that she’s “not really okay, as in it’s really been a struggle?” to which Meghan poignantly responded, “Yes.”

Describing the press’ attitude at the time as “ruthless”, Harry also went on to liken the scrutiny Meghan had experienced to the constant hounding by paparazzi that had led to his late mother, Princess Diana’s death.

He added: “I think being part of this family — in this role, in this job — every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back,” he said. “In that respect, it’s the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best.”

However, now, half a decade on from that fateful interview, Meghan has issued a new update to fans as she describes her family life with husband Harry and children Archie and Lilibet as “great.”

“We’re just doing great. And happy to be watching our family grow up and evolve. Of course, I’m happy. We’re really happy,” Meghan told PEOPLE during the tour of Nigeria.

After speaking to young girls during the trip, Meghan told the publication: “I saw myself in them. I see the potential in all of these young girls — and, by the way, in these young boys as well.”

She then added: , “It’s what we see in our own children — to give them that promise and excitement for their futures.”
