Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, had in a documentary recently called Harry: The Lost Prince, in which British reporters explored her and Prince Harry’s noble work and their luxury lifestyles
Meghan Markle has been pictured at an awards ceremony flaunting her immaculate sense of style – despite a stark warning this week about her luxury lifestyle.
A German documentary entitled Harry: The Lost Prince included damning criticism this week of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, particularly around how their much-publicised visits to poverty-stricken countries sits uneasily with Meghan’s designer wardrobe.
Speaking on the programme, the Mirror’s Royal Editor, Russell Myers, said: “If you’re going to places like Nigeria, like Colombia, which have huge socio-economic problems, some of the world’s poorest communities in these countries, and you’re turning up wearing tens of thousands of pounds worth of designer clothes – it really doesn’t send the right message.”
Meghan was alone at the event in California as Harry attended the 2024 New York Times DealBook Summit thousands of miles away. The Prince was quizzed there about speculation his marriage with Meghan was ending – but he wryly laughed off the talk.
Yet Meghan, 43, turned up to the Tyler Perry awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, California, today donning more attire from her designer wardrobe. The former actress, who starred in Suits, attended the glittering celeb-filled gala while Harry, 40, appeared at the New York Times DealBook Conference, thousands of miles away.
Dressed in a chic black floor length gown, complete with a sweetheart neckline, Meghan channelled her usual sartorial prowess with a sweeping train, while also showcasing her toned legs with a daring thigh high slit. To complete her look, the Duchess kept things simple with a pair of black Stuart Weitzman heels and a silver Logan Hollowell necklace, all finished off with a natural makeup look and pristine up-do.
Although the outfit was a far cry from some of the more eye-catching outfits Meghan has donned in recent years, the classically elegant gown made sure she looked the part of a doting friend, rather than the main event, as she celebrated her close pal Tyler Perry’s milestone achievement as he received the the highest honour from The Paley Center for Media.
The Paley Honours Award is the organisation’s highest honour and recognises people who have made groundbreaking achievements in media that have consistently set the bar for excellence. In this case, Tyler, who also happens to be the godfather to Princess Lilibet, has been awarded the prestigious honour for his prolific career as an actor and filmmaker, which began over 30 years ago.
Yet while Meghan was all smiles as she posed on the red carpet beside her dear friend, the glamorous outing was a far cry from the controversy that has dogged her and her husband in recent days.
Millions watched Harry: The Lost Prince as it aired earlier this week. One veteran soldier, who lost his left arm and had his right leg amputated above the knee after being seriously injured by a landmine blast in Afghanistan in 2008, criticised Harry in the programme.
Ben McBean who shared a flight home from Afghanistan with the Prince, said: “I just thought, with him kind of whinging about his family and he was saying something about his brother pushing him over or something like that, I was just like, ‘Mate, just leave it out’… You and your brother had a little fisticuffs…but family’s family, you know.”
“If one of my friends fell out with his partner and started posting things on social media and saying my ex is this and that, I’d have told him to shut up as well.”
The documentary even pours scorn on Harry and Meghan for “failing” to mix with wealthy neighbours in the celebrity enclave of Montecito of California, where they have made their home with children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Jack Royston, from the podcast The Royal Report, also picked up on the couple’s desire to be “half in and half out” of the Royal family which was dismissed by the late Queen.
He said: “If you have a situation where Harry and Meghan are earning huge amounts of money in Hollywood trading off their reputations, but then they’re also bolstering their reputations by working for the Queen – they’re able to present themselves on the world stage as being these working members of the royal family who are also available for a price.
“That is a huge compromise to demand off the monarchy. If they were to be perceived to be promoting their commercial projects while representing the Queen, then that’s also… starting to border on corruption there because they should never be using the monarchy as a platform.”
