Late Queen’s subtle £4m gesture at Princess Beatrice’s wedding that proved their closeness

Princess Beatrice borrowed one of the late Queen’s dresses for her wedding, but the monarch also lent her something rather special.

She may have been the longest-reigning monarch to us but to Princess Beatrice, the late Queen was a grandmother.

And as one might expect during a wedding, the grandmother came through with tradition, giving the princess ‘something borrowed’.

Princess Beatrice had planned to wear a custom dress for her wedding but considering it was during lockdown in 2020, the royal had to make last-minute changes due to designer issues.

Beatrice asked the Queen if she could borrow an original Norman Hartnell evening dress for the occasion and she obliged.

Showing just how close the grandmother-granddaughter duo were, the Queen also let Beatrice borrow another special item – the Fringe Tiara – which she inherited from her grandmother, Queen Mary, after she died in 1953.

Princess Beatrice followed royal tradition as two other brides have worn the Fringe Tiara on their wedding day, including the Queen and Princess Anne.

The jewel comes with a hefty price tag too, coming in at an estimated £4m.

Daena Borrowman, Marketing Manager at jewellery box, told Express.co.uk: “Created on the commission of the Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara, which doubles up as a necklace, is now worth more than £4 million.

“It consists of diamonds set in gold and silver fashioned into 47 graduated rose-set tapering bars, separated by 46 narrow spikes.

“The diamonds in the tiara were originally part of a necklace that Queen Victoria gifted to Queen Mary on the occasion of her wedding.

“The then-Princess Elizabeth wore it on her wedding day when it snapped as she was getting ready and it had to be rushed to Garrard’s to be fixed.”

While the Fringe Tiara is one of the most expensive jewels worn by royal brides, another one, worn by a different granddaughter comes with an even more expensive price tag.

Princess Beatrice’s younger sister Eugenie actually wore the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara when she married Jack Brooksbank in 2018.

Miss Borrowman added: “A tiara as iconic as this one could be worth anything in the range of £5 million and £10 million.”

“The rose-cut pave diamond and emerald tiara is set in platinum, adorned by six small emeralds and one large central cabochon emerald of around 93.7 carats.”
