Dedicated King Charles undergoes cancer treatment within hours of return to royal duties

King Charles has had a positive first day back in public duty, but will resume treatment for his cancer this afternoon.

A dedicated King Charles is juggling his public duties with cancer treatment, as it was revealed on a royal visit that he was due to arrive at therapy later today (April 30). The monarch resumed work today amid his ongoing cancer treatment, receiving the green light from doctors to mix with people.

He was seen beaming with Queen Camilla by his side as he visited a cancer hospital, University College Hospital, in London. Arriving at the Macmillan Cancer Centre, Charles flashed a smile as he began chatting to patients and staff.

The 75-year-old himself is undergoing treatment for cancer, a diagnosis which was announced back in February. The type of cancer he is suffering from is not confirmed, but his openness about the condition has increased awareness.

For the visit, the reigning monarch also wanted to highlight some of the innovative research, supported by Cancer Research UK, taking place at the hospital.

As the King met with fellow cancer patients, he reassured them about the state of his health when he told them “I’m well” as he returned to public-facing duties.

The King sympathised with one patient as she received her chemotherapy with many others in a day unit, telling a patient, “I’ve got to have my treatment this afternoon as well.”

Charles has been receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer since early February when Buckingham Palace publicly announced his diagnosis. It came less than two weeks after he was admitted to hospital for prostate surgery.

When quizzed about his health, he also told another patient: “I’m all right thank you very much, not too bad.”

The visit was marked by the King being named the new patron of Cancer Research UK which will sit alongside his patronage of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Charles has long taken a specific interest in the treatment of cancer and has always shown his support for cancer patients and charities. He has met hundreds of people suffering from the disease and has been a patron of Macmillan Cancer Support for more than 25 years.

Charles’s decision to openly share his cancer diagnosis with the public was widely praised and triggered a “King Charles effect” – a surge in visits to cancer information and support websites nationwide.

In the 24 hours following the Palace announcement, searches for NHS advice on the disease increased by 51 percent. Macmillan also saw a 42 percent jump in hits to its website on the day of the announcement.

The King’s visit to the hospital will mark the resumption of a more fulsome schedule this summer.

His treatment programme will continue, with a Buckingham Palace spokesman saying: “Doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that the King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties. Forthcoming engagements will be adapted where necessary to minimise any risks to His Majesty’s continued recovery.”
