Body recovered in search for missing Dovestone Reservoir paddleboarder Simon Daniels

Personal trainer Mr Daniels had been missing since getting into difficulties at the Oldham beauty spot on Sunday

The body of missing paddleboarder Simon Daniels has been recovered from Dovestone Reservoir. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say the search for personal trainer Mr Daniels has come to a close after the tragic discovery this evening (Wednesday).

The huge search operation was first launched on Sunday afternoon (October 20) after a man and woman fell into the water at the Oldham beauty spot. The Manchester Evening News understands they had been paddleboarding on the reservoir.

Emergency services, including water search teams, police officers and fire crews, descended on the scene and the woman was rescued. She was treated for hypothermia and shock.

However the man, who has now been named as Simon Daniels, reportedly got into difficulty in the water. Searches have been ongoing to find the personal trainer from Cheshire in the days since.

GMP said the underwater search team discovered a body at 6:15pm this evening which has now been confirmed to be his. His family have been informed. The force said his death is not being treated as suspicious. They have also thanked the public for their help and support.

Detective Inspector Laura Crossley from Oldham CID said: “Throughout this tragic incident we have been in close contact with Simon’s family and will continue to offer them our support as they come to terms with their loss. His death is not being treated as suspicious and the scene has now been closed. A report is being prepared for the corner.”

“We appreciate the public’s support in enabling search teams to carry out their investigations, we understand the inconvenience this may have caused over the last few days, but it was important we conducted a full and thorough search for Simon.”
