The Princess of Wales made her first joint official outing with the Prince of Wales since her chemotherapy ended, by meeting the bereaved families of the Southport stabbing victims.

However, Kate, 42, decided to go without her oval 12-carat Ceylon sapphire surrounded by a cluster of 14 solitaire diamonds set in white gold.

The late Princess Diana chose the ring when she was presented with a selection of options by the then-Crown jewellers, Garrard of Mayfair, upon her engagement to then-Prince Charles.

The mother-of-three opted instead for a thin golden ring, topped with what some have speculated is a new “eternity band”.

Kate wore the accessory, set with diamonds and sapphires, in August while making a Team GB video with William, and during her heartwarming family video released last month.

Tobias Kormind, the co-founder and MD of 77 Diamonds, Europe’s largest online diamond jeweller, told GB News that the new ring is likely an “eternity” ring meant to symbolise William and Kate’s love.

He continued: “Kate’s new ring may be a symbol of hope for new beginnings, with an emotional tie to the past.

“Eternity rings represent everlasting love, and this style of ring echoed the sentiment of the moving video, where Kate was seen spending time with those closest to her.”

Kate paired her new ring with a burgundy polka dot dress from the brand Whistles, which is currently on sale for £59.

She also wore an Alexander McQueen coat and Gianvito Rossi high heels that cost £595.

To accessorise, Kate carried a £395 brown clutch bag from Emmy London.

Prince Harry Says He’ll Never Bring Meghan Markle Back To The UK

Prince Harry has no plans to return to his homeland. In the ITV documentary Tabloids on Trial, which aired on July 26 and explores several legal battles against U.K. newspapers, the Duke of Sussex voiced safety concerns about bringing his wife Meghan Markle, and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, back to Britain.

“It’s still dangerous, and all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff to act on what they have read,” he said in the doc. “Whether it’s a knife or acid, whatever it is, and these are things that are of genuine concern for me. It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”

Harry announced in January 2020 that he and the Duchess of Sussex would be stepping back from their royal duties. In June of that year, the couple moved to California, where they currently reside with their two children.

After retreating from royal life, Harry and Meghan’s right to police security in the U.K. was removed by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures. In 2023, the Duke challenged the decision in court, offering to pay for police protection himself.
In a court statement at the time, Harry said he and Meghan “felt forced” to leave the U.K. due to safety concerns. His statement came after the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police, Neil Basu, said the agency had found “disgusting and very real” threats to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“When you’ve been through any level of pain or trauma, I believe part of our healing journey, certainly part of mine, is being able to be really open about it,” she said, adding that she hasn’t “really scraped the surface” about her experiences in the British monarchy following her and Harry’s exit from the royal sphere in early 2020.

“I would never want someone else to not be believed,” Meghan continued. “If me voicing what I have overcome will save someone, or encourage someone in their life to really, genuinely check in on them, and not assume that the appearance is good so everything’s OK, then that’s worth it.”

Following Harry and Meghan’s 2021 interview with Winfrey, which was watched by 17 million viewers in the United States alone, the royal family released a statement addressing the duchess’ comments about her mental health, among other revelations.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” a Buckingham Palace statement read. “While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”

Prince Harry Was “Devastated”

The Duke of Sussex previously spoke of his wife’s mental health struggles in the couple’s 2022 Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, revealing that he was “devastated” to learn she had been experiencing suicidal ideation.

“I never thought that it would get to that stage,” he said. “The fact that it got to that stage, I felt angry and ashamed. I didn’t deal with it particularly well. I dealt with it as ‘institutional Harry’ as opposed to ‘husband Harry.’ And what took over my feelings was my royal role.”

The Royal Family could be put in a ‘difficult position’ if Prince Harry‘s Invictus Games returns to the UK for the first time since he and Meghan moved to the US.

A question that would need to be answered is whether the Duke and Duchess of Sus𝑠e𝑥 and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, move into their old grace-and-favour home Frogmore Cottage for the duration of the games.

 

Senior royals would also need to take a stand on if they support the event, which they did at the first games in 2014 when then-Prince Charles, Camilla, and Prince William appeared alongside Harry for the opening ceremony, The Telegraph reports.

But at the time, he was a full-time working royal – and any tensions and spats were not aired in public, as they are so often these days.

Since 2014, the Invictus Games have become a popular global sports competition which 22 countries and more than 500 athletes have been involved with.

The games in Düsseldorf, Germany last year saw Team UK’s 59 sportsmen and women win 69 medals between them.

The Royal Family has not made a public statement on the Invictus Games for several years, despite its growing importance globally.

The yearly sports event is one of the most public engagements for the Sus𝑠e𝑥es, but it returning the UK could prove a challenge for them.

It is an incredibly important piece of work for Prince Harry and one of his last remaining legacies from when he was a full-time working Royal – and one which he feels very proud of. The games also allow him to reconnect with fellow military veterans.

But last month Harry lost a High Court challenge against the Home Office over a decision to downgrade his taxpayer-funded personal security when he visits Britain.

The Duke of Sus𝑠e𝑥 took legal action over the move by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) after being told he would no longer be given the ‘same degree’ of publicly funded protection when in the UK.

His lawyers had claimed he was ‘singled out’ and treated ‘less favourably’ in the February 2020 decision by the body, which falls under the Home Office’s remit.

But at a hearing in London in December, the Government insisted Harry’s claim should be dismissed, arguing Ravec was entitled to conclude the duke’s protection should be ‘bespoke’ and considered on a ‘case-by-case’ basis. Two months later, retired High Court judge Sir Peter Lane ruled: ‘The application for judicial review is refused.’

While Harry plans to appeal, this means that he will not be expect a high level of security and must use his own private protection.

Unless he can successfully appeal the ruling, the Duke of Sus𝑠e𝑥 would not feel comfortable bringing his wife and their children, Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two, to Britain, The Telegraph understands.

The paper reported that plans are being made for him to return to the UK alone in May for a service at St Paul’s Cathedral in honour of the Invictus Games 10th anniversary.

It is not known if senior royals would support the games coming back to Britain, and they have more important things to worry about at the moment with both King Charles and Princess Kate going through treatment for cancer.

Prince William and Kate were key figures in establishing the games and were reportedly ‘delighted that it has been a success’.

Given current disagreements in the Royal Family, it is perhaps not likely that the Waleses will watch the games with the Sus𝑠e𝑥es.

But they could maybe be joined by Mike and Zara Tindall, who took part in a wheelchair rugby match with Harry at the inaugural London 2014 Invictus Games.

 

The UK will need to win a bid against Washington DC to host the games, and the Government has pledged £26million to get it going.

Veterans minister Johnny Mercer co-hosted a symposium in London to get further private finance to help with the bid to hold the games in Birmingham in 2027.

He commended the power of the Invictus games and of sport to transform the lives of those injured by service in body and mind’.

Mr Merer added: ‘The vision the Duke of Sus𝑠e𝑥 had to see that a decade ago had almost single-handedly transformed the lives of thousands of veterans, not only in the UK but globally, with up to 22 nations now involved in this incredible legacy. So yes, I want the Games.

‘I want the Games because you actually have to be there to feel that incredible transformative power of the Invictus Games in these people’s lives being built.’

Meghan Markle found a special way to honor Princess Diana during her trip to Nigeria.

The Duchess of Sussex, 42, wore a sentimental necklace that belonged to Prince Harry’s mother to a reception for military families in Abuja on May 11.

PEOPLE exclusively reveals that the necklace, featuring a delicate diamond cross on a gold chain, was a recent gift from Harry to his wife and once belonged to Princess Diana.

Meghan often pays tribute to Harry’s mother through fashion, and has several pieces in her jewelry box that belonged to the late Princess of Wales, including butterfly earrings and an aquamarine ring. Prince Harry, 39, also famously included two diamonds from his mother’s personal collection in the tri-stone engagement ring he designed for Meghan when he proposed in 2017.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex follow in the footsteps of Harry’s parents, King Charles and Princess Diana, who visited Nigeria for an official visit in March 1990. Meghan may have subtly paid tribute to Diana during the first day of their trip on May 10 by wearing a gold collar necklace reminiscent of one Diana wore during her time in Nigeria over 30 years ago.

On May 11, Meghan wore the cross necklace with a St. Agni white strapless column linen dress and her hair swept up, allowing the accessory to shine. She received a warm welcome at the reception held at the Defense Headquarters Officers Mess, where an official acknowledged Meghan’s Nigerian heritage in their address.

“Princess Meghan is a Nigerian!” Abike Dabiri Erewa, chairman of the Nigerian Diaspora, said at the event. The exclamation won a round of applause from the crowd, plus a smile and applause from Meghan herself. The Duchess of Sussex previously shared on her podcast Archetypes that she discovered she is 43% Nigerian through a genealogy test. Throughout the trip, she spoke of the connection she feels to the country.

The chairman went on to say that she was “excited but not surprised” when Meghan shared the news about her Nigerian heritage, “because she is beautiful, intelligent, diligent and hardworking and she stands firm in the midst of challenges.”

“Prince Harry, you married the best — our daughter, our friend, Princess Meghan,” she said. “I hope you come back again, again and again.”

Harry and Meghan are in Nigeria at the invitation of the Chief of Defense Staff, the country’s highest-ranking military official, and arrived in Africa on May 10 for the official three-day stay. The visit is significant as their first international tour since stepping back from their royal roles in 2020, and PEOPLE’s chief foreign correspondent Simon Perry exclusively joined the trip to Nigeria.

The busy itinerary highlighted the Invictus Games, which Prince Harry founded in 2014 as a vehicle for healing for wounded, injured and sick service personnel through adaptive sport. Harry and Meghan made the trip following Nigeria’s event debut at the latest iteration of the Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany in September 2023, and the Minister of Defense has expressed interest in hosting the Games in the future.

The Duke and Duchess’ trip kicked off in Abuja and concludes in Lagos on May 12 with a basketball clinic from charity Giants of Africa, a cultural reception at the State Governor Hosue and a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.

Ending the stay in Lagos also calls back to Princess Diana and King Charles’ trip to Nigeria, as they visited the city in 1990.
