King Charles has reportedly severed financial ties with his younger brother, Prince Andrew. In an updated version of the book Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story, author Robert Hardman claims that the King instructed the Keeper of the Privy Purse to remove the Duke of York’s £1 million annual allowance and to stop paying for his private security, per an excerpt published by The Daily Mail.

A source added that Andrew is “no longer a financial burden on the King.”

Hardman writes that the prince must now pay for the protection of historical art and furniture from the Royal Collection and several antiques he owns after he reportedly did not accept a proposal from the King to relocate from the Royal Lodge in Windsor to the “considerably smaller property” of Frogmore Cottage (the residence is now vacant after Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, were asked to move out in 2023).

“The Duke had certainly been faring better than expected since his brother succeeded to the throne,” Hardman wrote in his book. “He continued to enjoy access to Windsor facilities and a living allowance which, according to a well-sourced newspaper article, amounted to £1 million annually.”

He continued, “The cost of the private security contract to guard the property, which sits outside that Windsor cordon, was running at what one insider called ‘a substantial seven-figure sum annually.’ In August it was widely reported (and not disputed) that the King was no longer prepared to renew that contract beyond the autumn of 2024.”

Hardman added that if the Duke of York continued to reside at the Royal Lodge and rejected Charles’s offer to move to Frogmore Cottage, he was told that his brother “would feel no obligation to continue paying even his day-to-day living allowance.”

“In the late summer of this year, that patience ran out,” Hardman wrote. “The Duke informed the monarch that, regardless of any ultimatum, he was going to stay put at Royal Lodge anyway. At which point, the Keeper of the Privy Purse (the monarchy’s finance director) was instructed to sever his living allowance.”

Prince Andrew initially lost his publicly-funded police protection in 2022 after stepping away from royal duties. The move was prompted by a disastrous interview about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, which aired three years prior. At the time, the late Queen Elizabeth also stripped her son of his military titles and patronages.

To many royal onlookers’ delight, Princess Kate made a surprise public appearance in Southport last month. The visit followed an emotional September 9 video, in which she announced she officially completed her preventative chemotherapy treatment and would be returning to work in a reduced capacity. Such circumstances means the princess will be picking and choosing her engagements. While her husband, Prince William, will be jetting off to South Africa this month, Middleton will be staying behind. Even so, royal experts suggest this trip signals a hopeful sign for Middleton’s health.

The heir will travel to Cape Town for the Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony on November 6. The Princess of Wales regularly accompanies William for the annual event. However, this year, she will remain an home with their kids, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

“Prince William has made it clear his family, their wellbeing and their privacy come first,” royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Express. “Catherine has been undergoing preventative chemotherapy for cancer, as she has so movingly told us, and though she has finished chemotherapy, she has said she still has a long way to go.”

However, according to Fitzwilliams, William would not even consider leaving his wife unless she felt comfortable.

“William would undoubtedly not be going to South Africa, even though the trip is for the fourth Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony, if he did not feel that she was doing well and was happy coping with the family in his absence,” he told the publication.

Even though the Earthshot Prize, an award given to five game-changing innovations to repair the planet, is something William holds very dear to his chest, Middleton is his priority.

“The prize is his brainchild, but we know that they are a devoted couple and what his priorities are, and that he feels able to go is another encouraging sign that she is doing well,” Fitzwilliams added.

King Charles is apparently hesitant to make up with his son Prince Harry—and not just because of the ongoing royal family drama.

According to a new report from The Telegraph, Charles fears that there could be legal ramifications if he tries to reestablish his relationship with Harry given his long-running legal case against the U.K. government to reinstate his police security in the country.

“Here you have the infelicitous situation where the King’s son is suing the King’s ministers in the King’s courts. That is pulling the King in three directions,” a senior constitutional expert and advisor to the royal family told biographer Robert Hardman. “You also have the situation where the King’s son publishes accounts of private conversations, some of which have been, shall we say, wrong.”

The source is likely referring to reports that Harry “misremembered” some of the private conversations between family members that were mentioned in his 2023 tell-all memoir Spare.

“So imagine the situation if the prince were to talk to his father about his court case and then later to describe that conversation—or, worse, a conversation which was not entirely accurate,” Hardman continued in the report. “There would be serious legal jeopardy. Harry would only have to say, ‘My father said this’ and a court case could collapse.”

While Harry and Charles’s relationship remains rocky partially due to his security-related lawsuits, the Duke of Sussex’s wife, Meghan Markle, is reportedly urging her husband to “let go” of his court cases for a different reason.

A former employee of the couple’s Archewell Foundation previously told People that Markle “supports Harry 100 percent, but she wishes he could let go of these lawsuits, be happy and live in the moment.” The ex-staffer added, “She wants him to be free of all of this, but she also knows that because of everything he’s been through and his love for [her and their children], he can’t. She wants him to live in a world where he is not burdened by this.”
