The family celebrated Lilibet’s birthday at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor with a backyard picnic. That day, the Queen was set to attend the Epsom Derby in Surrey as part of the jubilee celebrations but was forced to cancel due to her ongoing mobility issues. “The next day she asked if maybe they’d like to come up for tea again and was told they’ve gone,” Burrell remembers. “‘What do you mean they’ve gone?’ she said. They’ve gone back to America. ‘Oh no, they never said goodbye’.”

Burrell says the Queen was “confused” by the slight and the family’s decision to leave so quickly. “How could you offend our Queen?” Burrell says. “Well, I don’t understand anyone that could do that. Not her family, why would you want to? She was devoid of jealousy, anger, envy, all those traits that we associate with other people she didn’t have. She was just a very simple soul. I wish the world could have known her the way I knew her.”

The first anniversary of the Queen’s death will be difficult for the family as she was such a huge part of their lives. “All the family dearly loved our Queen, and they will all be remembering her in their own particular ways,” Burrell says. “She was a mother, a granny, a great granny to all of them. And they all miss her. Even Harry and Meghan, in Los Angeles will be thinking about the Queen on her anniversary because Harry was a particular favourite.”

Burrell says he always had a “communication” with the Queen until the end of her life and knows the unique challenges she faced in her final years. Because while the Queen always kept her family close, her beloved grandson Prince Harry broke away from the royal family just two years before her death. And while Prince Archie was born in London, when his little sister Princess Lilibet was born on 4 June 2021, the family were already living over 5,000 miles away in California.

When it was put to her that the world changes, Anne said: “It changes a bit. I mean, it doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing, I have to say. I’m not quite sure what else, you know, we can do.” And asked if there are “conversations about relevance”, she replied: “There will be, everywhere. It’s not a conversation that I would necessarily have.

“I think it’s perfectly true that it is a moment where you need to have that discussion. But I would just underline that the monarchy provides, with the constitution, a degree of long-term stability that is actually quite hard to come by any other way.”

The Princess was then asked how she and her family deal with a recent poll that suggests many don’t want to see the monarchy continue. She said she sees herself in a supportive role for brother Charles.

“Well, we don’t in many respects need to deal with it, not least of all because it is the monarch that is the key to this, and the constitution that underpins the monarchy,” she said.

“We as a family see ourselves there to support that role. What we do, we hope, contributes to the monarchy and the way in which it can convey continuity, of not just interest, but of service, of understanding, the way that people in communities want to live their lives.

 

“And I think so often we get the chance to see communities and the people who do things really well and are very generous with their time in a way that, if you look at the media, you tend not to get that impression,” she said.

Speaking about what kind of King her brother will be, Anne said: “Well, you know what you’re getting, because he’s been practising for a bit, and I don’t think he’ll change. He is committed to his own level of service. That will remain true.”

It was put to the princess that she does not seem worried about the health or the longevity of the monarchy, and she replied: “I think you’re putting words into my mouth, as they say.”

She said she believes there is “genuine benefit from this particular arrangement, the constitutional monarchy, and I think it has good long-term benefits”, adding: “And that commitment to long term is what the monarchy stands for.”

Royal author Tina Brown is not holding back when it comes to the monarchy.

The former Vanity Fair editor slammed Meghan Markle and “naïve” Prince Harry in a scathing critique after they exited from their royal duties.

“In England, they’re going to constantly make a career out of trashing Harry. But actually, the thing about Harry is he’s very good at being Prince Harry,” Brown, 70, said on “The Ankler” podcast.

“That’s the tragedy of all of this, is that he is the most talented member of the royal family, without doubt, in terms of being a prince, which is all he does know how to do… he’s really sort of flawless at it.”

However, Brown gave her honest perspective on the Duchess of Sussex, “I think he’s pretty much in the thrall of Meghan. The trouble with Meghan is that she has the worst judgment of anyone in the entire world… She’s flawless about getting it all wrong… She really is.”

Brown added, “She’s a perfectionist about getting it all wrong… Her issue is that she doesn’t listen… She has all these people, asks them their opinion, and then doesn’t follow it. She does what she wants to do. And all of her ideas are total crap, unfortunately.”

The royal author continued to criticize how the couple left the monarchy in 2020.

“He’s so naïve and really… unschooled in the ways of the world. Being Prince Harry means that I doubt if he ever booked a table in a restaurant. The army was great for him, and he was extremely good and competent in there. That really helped turn him into a real person.”

Brown claimed that since Harry’s been married to Markle, “he’s the lamb to the slaughter in this situation.”

“He was terribly impressed by Meghan. He thought that she knew all, she persuaded him that she was the savvy Hollywood wheeler-dealer who could come in and make them stars and all the rest of it. And he just sort of blindly followed her like a child, really.”

Fox News Digital reached out to representatives for Prince Harry and Markle for comment.

After their exit, Harry and Markle moved to Montecito, California. They’re raising their two kids in the United States and the Duke of Sussex continues to be estranged from his royal family, including his brother Prince William and father, King Charles III.

“Unfortunately, she made every mistake in the book, and she’s kind of run out of road. I don’t know where Meghan goes. Harry could still, as I say, make a comeback. He’ll always be Prince Harry. He’ll always be the grandson of the queen and the son of Diana.”

Brown’s comments come after the royal couple spoke candidly about the monarchy after their exit.

In 2021, one year after their decision to step down as senior members of the royal family, Harry and Markle revealed their struggles with royal life in a two-hour interview with Oprah Winfrey.

After the explosive interview with Winfrey, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continued to speak out about their experiences within the royal family.

Prince Harry and Markle detailed their time as working royals in a docuseries released by Netflix in 2022, and Harry followed that up with his memoir, “Spare.” The book detailed the issues in his relationships with King Charles, Prince William, his stepmother Queen Camilla and more. As for Brown, she has been known to criticize the royal family in the past.

In 2022, she claimed that Prince William was “smart” for waiting 10 years before proposing to Kate Middleton.

At the time, Brown had written a book about the British royal family titled “The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor – the Truth and the Turmoil.”

The book explored “the scandals, love affairs, power plays and betrayals” that have rocked the royals during the last 20 years. It featured revelations based on Brown’s access to palace insiders.

Meghan Markle may have married into the royal family and on the cusp of motherhood, ready to look after her own bub – but it doesn’t mean her mum Doria Ragland won’t be by her side.

The Duchess of Sussex’s mother is said to have come to her daughter’s defence after reported surfaced that her ex-husband and American actor Trevor Engelson had plans to launch a TV comedy based on their failed marriage.

According to British newspaper The Sun, “Doria Ragland, who is currently preparing to head to Windsor for the imminent arrival of Baby Sussex, was previously dispatched by the Duchess of Sussex to confront her ex-husband Trevor Engelson about his plans to launch a TV comedy based on the couple’s failed marriage.”

The comedy sparked a lot of conversations, with the executive producer of hit TV show Modern Family working on it with Trevor via Fox Studios.

 

It was expected that fans would follow the story which saw the ex-husband of a British princess struggle with having to share custody of their (fictitious) child with a princess in England.

The storyline had obvious comparisons to Meghan and Prince Harry’s public marriage,  therefore The Duchess heavily opposed the comedy, particularly as it planned to make fun of the royal romance on a weekly basis.

The Sun suggests Meghan’s mother “is believed to have maintained a friendly relationship with Trevor – and her intervention seems to have worked. He ended up agreeing to drop the comedy altogether.”

Meghan and Trevor began dating in 2004 and tied the knot in 2011. He was a producer on her famous legal drama Suits.

According to ZDF, it will also address the death of the late Queen and the recent cancer diagnoses of King Charles and Princess Kate.

The makers of the doc, including award-winning filmmaker Ulrike Grunewald, travelled to New York to speak with sources close to the Sussexes and filmed in California, where Harry and Meghan live. The team behind the film also previously produced a special on Princess Kate and The Drama of the Windsors.

It comes amid news of Harry’s own upcoming documentary series. It was announced on Wednesday that POLO, a five-episode docuseries produced by Harry and Meghan, will officially debut on December 10. The highly-anticipated show follows polo players “on and off the field” as they compete in the US Open Polo Championships.

Netflix shared the news and said: “Through fierce rivalries and intense training, viewers will get an unprecedented glimpse into the dedication and skill required to compete at the sport’s highest level.” It is well known that the Duke of Sussex has played polo for decades and is a huge fan of the equestrian sport.
