  • Mike Tyson conqueror lands 10th on Top 10 oldest heavyweight list

Mike Tyson conqueror lands 10th on Top 10 oldest heavyweight list

Mike Tyson’s conqueror, Danny Williams, lands tenth as World Boxing News charts the top ten oldest active heavyweight boxers.

Last month, Williams lost for the 33rd time in his professional career, having continued competing into his fifties.

This startling fact urged WBN to look at other boxers who currently ply their trade over the half-century of years. It turns out there are nine others in Williams’ shoes.

The oldest currently active heavyweight is Jeff Holcomb of the United States. America has four of the top ten, including two of the top three.

Holcomb returned from a fifteen-year layoff in 2022 only to be knocked out in the first round by Onoriode Ehwarieme.

Undeterred, Holcomb returned to the ring in May of this year for the same treatment. Having retired at the end of the first round against Ehwarieme, the glutton for punishment lasted only 98 seconds against Keith Mayes.

Second place sees 53-year-old Serbian Martin Rovcanin on the list. Rovcanin is one of two fighters who carry undefeated records in their twilight run at pugilism.

Rovcanin is 8-0 with three stoppages to his name. However, he’s fought the same opponent twice and spread his career over a decade.

At three is Florida-based Puerto Rican Moises Droz. The 52-year-old is on a three-bout winning streak and last fought in December.

Coming in at number four is the most hapless of the ten. Kenyan James Obui enjoyed a less-than-impressive 0-1o run in the paid ranks between 2010 and 2015.

Returning this year, it was the same story for Obiu as he went zero for eleven against debutant Louis Olivier in January.

    Williams

The fifth position sees journeyman Jeremiah Williams enter the fold. Williams, 51, has 33 pro fights and has shared the ring with Notorious Deontay Wilder opponent Dustin Nichols.

Williams stopped Nichols in three rounds. He drew with Cruz Sarmiento in Tijuana, Mexico, in his last bout.

At six is Engin Solmaz. Unlike his name, the Turk, 51, runs out of steam in the ring, losing sixty of his 71 contests.

Seventh is Peter Sipos. The 50-year-old Hungarian competes on the European circuit and is surprisingly undefeated in eleven years. His last win came in August when he stopped Radovan Nedovic.

Taking eighth place is the second unbeaten fighter on the countdown. American James Tanksley, also 50, is in the midst of a 6-0 run in the top division.

Tanksley initially turned pro in 2014 at 41, winning his first outing. However, he returned in 2022 and has since stopped four out of five.

The penultimate position in the top ten goes to Bernard Adie. The 50-year-old is 16-8 with eleven stoppages and has fought in several countries.

However, Kenya’s “Viper Of East Africa” has a deceptive record. Three of his wins have come when beating up on poor old James Obui.

At ten is the most notorious on the list. Danny Williams knocked out the great Mike Tyson in 2002 before facing Vitali Klitschko a few months later.

The Tyson win has become a curse for “The Brixton Bomber,” as European promoters won’t leave him alone. Paycheck after paycheck gets accepted by Williams.

Louison Loizou inflicted a 33rd defeat in 88 contests on Williams in a drab affair on Estonian soil.

Top 10 oldest heavyweight boxers in 2023

    1 Jeff Holcomb – United States – 55 years [11-7-2, 5 KOs]

    2 Martin Rovcanin – Serbia – 53 years [8-0, 3 Kos]

    3 Moises Droz – United States – 52 years [16-10, 12 KOs]

    4 James Obui – Kenya – 51 years [0-11, KO’d four times]

    5 Jeremiah Williams – United States – 51 years [17-14-2, 12 KOs]

    6 Engin Solmaz – Turkey – 51 years [8-60-3, KO’d 38 times]

    7 Peter Sipos – Hungary – 50 years [17-3, 9 KOs]

    8 James Tanksley – United States – 50 years [6-0, 4 KOs]

    9 Bernard Adie – Kenya – 50 years [16-8, 11 KOs]

It’s been a whirlwind week for Tyson Fury but that hasn’t stopped the ‘Gypsy King’ from returning to normal life – which he showcased in a series of social media posts.

Fury had been in Saudi Arabia last week to watch on as British rival Anthony Joshua secured an emphatic knockout win over former UFC star Francis Ngannou.

Shortly after that, the heavyweight star was spotted back on British soil as he splashed out on a lime green Lamborghini Urus – worth up to £180,000.

However, ahead of his scheduled fight with Ukrainian star Oleksandr Usyk in May – where he’ll earn a reported £100million – Fury has returned to normality and offered fans an insight into his preparations on social media.

On Monday, his Instagram story showed himself and wife Paris heading out for a food shop – where the heavyweight refused to purchase some of the higher-end items on offer.

Just a day prior, Fury splashed out on a £180,000 Lamborghini Urus and shared a video online

‘Now it’s time to go on a food shop in Asda with Paris Fury. Asda, Lancaster. The highlight of our evening!’, Fury declared in his first video inside the store.

After showing off a block of Lancashire cheese, Fury then filmed himself and Paris deliberating over which chocolate spread to buy.

Fury said: ‘Decisions, decisions. Do you spend £6.10 on a jar of Nutella or do you spend £1.85 on some chocolate spread?’

Paris then interjected: ‘No, you pay £2.75 for the big one! ‘ as she pointed out to the Asda value range option.

They then continued their shop, as Fury said: ‘There’s Paris getting some ice lollies for the kids’.

‘Ferrero Rocher ones’, Paris said before the heavyweight star quickly intervened.

‘Put them back! They’re a fiver for some ice lollies – I don’t think so! Get them ones that are a quid. Value for money.

‘After spending all the money on the Lambo, Paris, I think we need to save on shopping’.

Fans of the Fury family will recall a similar moment in their Netflix documentary – titled ‘At Home With The Furys’.

During an episode, Paris was seen telling their children that they were not allowed to buy pencils while they were out shopping.

Fury questioned the price of Nutella

He instead opted to buy Asda's own-brand chocolate spread

Fury then took a trip to the gym

Later, Fury and wife Paris headed to Asda

After a trip to the gym for a workout, Fury and wife Paris headed to Asda to do a food shop

Shortly after their trip to Asda, Fury was on the move once again as he shared a picture of a jet with the caption: ‘Business calling’.

Before jetting out for more training, however, Fury’s story also showed some of the more mundane tasks that filled his day.

The first video on his story showcased a car boot filled to the brim with rubbish bags as Fury prepared for a trip to the garbage tip.

In the video, he said: ‘After a good bit of training in the morning and a bit of breakfast, big man’s got to go to the tip and do his duties’.

‘Right, it’s that time of the day again. I’ve got chicken and rice, got a Greek salad and a bottle of water. Healthy eating… cannot wait for the fight!’

Fury then treated fans to an insight into his belt and accolade collection, where he showed off his WBC heavyweight title.

He then set off to the dentist, where he shared a video alongside two dental nurses before declaring: ‘So I’ve had my teeth done by the girls. All done! Clean and filled. What a day’.

Fury’s whirlwind day continued as, straight after, he posted another video where he asked: ‘Any guess where I’m going? T-shirt, shorts, socks and a towel. Any guesses?’

Fury's first story showed off a car boot filled with rubbish

His second story showed his chicken and rice

Fury gave an insight into his trip to the dump and his post-workout meal that he indulged in

As a final send-off, Fury said he was jetting off for 'business' as he posted a jet

The story afterwards showed him turning up to his gym, as he steps up his preparation for his bout with Usyk in two months time.

‘You know what time it is guys! This is where the magic is made. This is where it all happens, right in that ring there’.

Fury opted not to share any training footage on the day, as he perhaps looks to keep his Ukrainian opponent guessing ahead of their clash in May.

The 35-year-old then returned home for tea, where he once again shared a video of his chicken, rice and sweetcorn meal – as he maintained his clean eating habits.

Oliver Bearman’s F1 debut as Carlos Sainz’s replacement last weekend in Saudi Arabia took the world by storm. The Briton finished P7, two places ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who will replace Sainz permanently in 2025. Red Bull chief Helmut Marko questioned Ferrari’s move to sign Hamilton and urged the Italian outfit to find a solution for Bearman before it’s too late.

Bearman was so impressive that he almost also knocked Hamilton out during qualifying, losing by only three-thousandths of a second. The young Briton started P11 and made some incredible moves to finish the race in seventh, getting six points on debut. Marko feels that Ferrari going for a more expensive option in Hamilton, who will reportedly earn $100 million a year, seems like an illogical move.

In a column posted on Speed Week, Marko said, “What is Ferrari doing now? They buy the expensive Hamilton, Leclerc has a longer-term contract, and now Bearman is a super talent. If I were Fred Vasseur, I would immediately find Bearman an F1 cockpit in another team.”

Bearman was a name reportedly on Haas’ shortlist for 2025. Since Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen’s contracts end at the end of next season, the team could turn to brighter talents that could help them grow for the future. Moreover, Haas’ association with Ferrari could also help Bearman out.

Marko then went on to say that Ferrari would “pay dearly” for having Hamilton in the team instead of a younger talent for the future. However, Red Bull themselves have settled for older and more experienced figures over the last few years despite having very talented young drivers in their wings.

Helmut Marko acknowledges Liam Lawson’s talent

When Daniel Ricciardo got injured last year, Liam Lawson was chosen as his replacement at AlphaTauri for five races. In those five outings, the New Zealander impressed the entire paddock, outperforming and often outscoring Yuki Tsunoda, who had been at AlphaTauri for three years.

Unfortunately, Lawson did not make the final cut when Red Bull’s sister team announced their line-up for 2024. The team favored Ricciardo and Tsunoda even though the former has been far from his best over the last few years.

Regardless, in his column, Helmut Marko acknowledges that Lawson’s debut was “exceptional”. Although the 22-year-old is on the sidelines right now, there is a high chance he will get the seat at V-CARB (formerly AlphaTauri) if Ricciardo or Tsunoda end up getting the axe.

Since even exceptional talents like Bearman and Lawson are finding it difficult to get into F1, it shows that the sport has very limited opportunities. It also means that existing drivers have no time to rest, and must always be on their toes, as they are in danger of losing their place.

Mike Tyson's last opponent before Jake Paul now lives a very different life despite beating 'Iron Mike'

Mike Tyson’s final opponent of his legendary professional boxing career lives a very, very different life now.

Tyson’s professional career span an incredible 20 years as he had his last fight in June 2005 after making his debut back in 1985.

He won world titles and was involved in an infamous ear-bite fight against rival Evander Holyfield.

Tyson was also on the wrong end of one of the biggest upsets in boxing history as he succumbed to Buster Douglas in Tokyo, Japan.

His last-ever outing as a professional came against Kevin McBride, who scored a big stoppage victory over the boxing icon.

Tyson retired on the stool after round six, giving McBride the victory by technical knockout.

The Irishman, however, failed to build on his incredible win as he subsequently lost six of his next eight fights.

He walked away from the sport following his defeat to Mariusz Wach in 2011 and now lives a different life.

In 2020, speaking ahead of Tyson’s exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr, McBride opened up about his new profession – a tree surgeon.

“I work with a tree surgeon now. He has me dropping trees, clearing snow, shouting ‘timber’ and all that. It is good,” he said. “It keeps me busy.

“My job is I pick things up and I put things down.”

Naturally, McBride touched on his famous night in Washington, DC, revealing he doesn’t rewatch his win over Tyson despite the sheer magnitude of the victory.

At the time, he said: “It is coming up more often at the moment because every time they say about him making a comeback, they say I was the last guy to beat him.

“I like that. I don’t sit around re-watching the fight but someone put a clip on Facebook recently and I saw it – dream come true, isn’t it?”

Mike Tyson's incredible reaction when Khabib Nurmagomedov completely lost his head at UFC event

Mike Tyson produced a hilarious reaction when Khabib Nurmagomedov lost his head at the official UFC 160 weigh-ins.

Nurmagomedov’s fight against Abel Trujillo served as a 158.5lbs bout on the under-card of UFC 160 back in May 2013.

The Russian fighter missed weight as emotions were running high when he faced off against the American.

Nurmagomedov shoved Trujillo after they butted heads as Dana White intervened and stopped the incident from escalating.

Tyson, who was invited on stage by the UFC boss, loved the exchange between Nurmagomedov and Trujillo.

He smiled and raised his arms in appreciation in a brilliant sequence.

Nurmagomedov went onto dominate Trujillo to record his 20th professional MMA victory and his fourth win inside the famed Octagon.

He made UFC history by recording an impressive 21 takedowns in three rounds.

In 2020, reflecting on his win against Trujillo, ‘The Eagle’ said: “At this fight, which happened seven years ago, I placed a record in #UFC 21 takedowns in single fight.

“A month before the fight I injured my knee and wasn’t able to take opponents back.

“The decision to make was very simple. Just grab and throw your opponent for 15 minutes straight.

“If there is a desire, there will always be a solution.”

Tyson is a big fan of Nurmagomedov, calling him one of his four favourite UFC fighters.

“It’s needed in our society. No one thing suits everyone,” he explained.

“There’s a lot of guys. There’s Khabib and Jon Jones. There’s just so many good fighters out there. Colby Covington.

“There’s so many exciting fighters, they’re out there man.”

Nurmagomedov enjoyed a stunning MMA career as he walked away from the sport undefeated and as UFC lightweight champion.

He retired with a 29-0 record, beating the likes of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.

Jake Paul sends video message after controversial Mike Tyson 'fight rules' emerge

Jake Paul has sent a video message after controversial Mike Tyson fight rules emerge.

Last week, it was announced that Tyson and Paul will fight at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on July 20.

Confirming the fight, the popular streaming platform, Netflix, wrote: “It’s JAKE PAUL vs. MIKE TYSON — yes, really! — in a LIVE BOXING event at AT&T Stadium you won’t want to miss. Airing live on Netflix Saturday, July 20 #PaulTyson.”

Reacting to the fight, Derek Chisora said on Radio Rahim, via The Mirror: “I know for a fact they are using 8oz gloves and head guards – if I’m not mistaken.

“I think so. So we’re watching a sparring match. It’s a f****** joke. You think I’m paying to watch that?”

American YouTuber turned boxer Paul has since put out a video to address the criticism of him fighting Tyson.

He said: “Oh you’re mad at me for fighting Mike Tyson? Imagine this.

“‘Jake, we got the biggest deal ever you versus Mike Tyson live on Netflix, you’re going to entertain millions of people and make an unbelievable amount of money, what do you think? ‘Nah’.

“Exactly, That’s what I thought. July 20, be there.”

Tyson said of facing Paul: “I’m very much looking forward to stepping into the ring with Jake Paul at the AT&T STADIUM IN ARLINGTON, TEXAS. He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a “kid” can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT.

“It’s a full circle moment that will be beyond thrilling to watch; as I started him on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones and now I plan to finish him.”

Meanwhile, Paul said: “He’s the greatest heavyweight of all time…the most vicious KO artist ever. But I’m younger, I’m faster and I’m going to be working my ass off to get stronger.

“A member of my team sent me this video that Mike’s coach put up two weeks ago and asked me if I’m sure that I want to do this…yes, yes I do. Heavyweight.”

Remembering them for who they were and cherishing their values is what keeps their spirit everlasting. In light of these lines, Amir J. Tyson, the third son of Mike Tyson, recently lost his beloved grandmother. According to Amir, she “helped raise” him and likewise was “one of the most important people” in his life.

As per Amir’s latest Instagram post, she was a “big part of why” he is the person that he is today. Along these lines, he mentioned that he loved his grandma “so much” and was going to “miss her dearly”. But I’m glad she’s in a better place and will continue to make her proud,” Amir, who wanted to fight Logan Paul, added affectionately. Tyson Fury sends chilling warning to Mike Tyson ahead of his fight against ex-UFC champ Francis Ngannou

Tyson Fury could not resist sending a chilling warning to Mike Tyson ahead of his fight against Francis Ngannou.

The two heavyweight superstars will meet in a crossover clash on October 28 in Saudi Arabia.

And Ngannou – making his boxing debut – called on ring royalty as he brought Iron Mike into his camp as a coach.

The ex-UFC champion gave a glimpse of his preparation with legendary former world champion Tyson barking instructions at him.

Tyson, 57, captioned the post: “We’re just getting started @francis_ngannou, remember that.”

But Fury hit back: “Everyone has a plan until… these Lancaster Bombers hit you square in the face come fight night.”

Tyson Fury breaks silence on Mike Tyson training ex-UFC champ Francis Ngannou to KO him in Saudi showdown

Tyson Fury admits he’s saddened that Mike Tyson will be Francis Ngannou’s corner for their Saudi showdown.

The Gypsy King faces the former UFC heavyweight champion in a controversial crossover Kingdom clash on October 28.

Boxing rookie Ngannou has enlisted the help of former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson in a bid to shock the world in the ten-round exhibition.

And Fury, who was named after Iron Mike by his dad John, can’t help but feel down about the boxing icon trying to plot his demise.

The undefeated WBC heavyweight champion told Sky Sports: “I think that it’s sad, actually.

“The man that I am named after, a legend, has to go against me and then come out as a loser.

“Having lost to a man who was named after him.

“I think that it’s sad and I think that he should be in my corner, not the opposing corner.

“But business is business and I understand that it’s strictly business.”

Tyson, 57, has been impressed by what he’s seen of Cameroonian clubber Ngannou in their brief stint working together.

But Fury insists the American’s iconic mantra will ring true as soon as he sticks it on the MMA man-mountain.

He said: “No matter what he teaches this fella [Ngannou], no matter how much boxing training he does, everyone has got a plan until they get punched in the face.

“And I’m not sure who said that, but that is true. They’ve all got a plan until they get smacked in the mouth.”

Despite Tyson being on Team Ngannou, the Fury family still hold the New Yorker in the highest regard.

But that hasn’t stopped John from calling out the iconic heavyweight for a rumble on the undercard of his son’s controversial outing.

The 59-year-old told SecondsOut: “Why wouldn’t I not speak to Mike Tyson?

“I love the guy, I named my son after him. And if he wants to fight me on the undercard he can, no problem.”

Mike Tyson has shared footage of himself punching a bag days after his fight with Jake Paul was announced.

Paul shocked the world as he revealed he would be taking on Tyson, currently 57, later this year, with there being a 30-year age difference between the two men.

It will mark a sensational return to the ring for ‘Iron Mike’, who will be 58 by the time he comes up against the 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer nicknamed ‘The Problem Child’.

The fight is being held at the 80,000-seater AT&T Stadium in Texas, which is the home of NFL team Dallas Cowboys, and it will be streamed live on Netflix.

And Tyson seems to have started preparation for that bout, sharing footage of a training session online as anticipation starts to grow over his return.

Paul, who has 25.9million followers on Instagram, has made no secret of his desire to become a professional world champion. He fought in the co-main event when Tyson and Roy Jones Jnr staged an exhibition bout in 2020, Iron Mike’s first return to the ring since 2006.

As part of the build-up to the bout, Paul posted footage of Tyson training and claimed that it was taken just ‘two weeks ago’.

Conor McGregor gives his thoughts on ‘strange’ fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson after boxing fans were left stunned by bizarre match-up set to be aired on Netflix

Conor McGregor has spoken out on Jake Paul and Mike Tyson‘s shock announcement that they will face off this summer.

The boxing world was stunned by the news after ‘Iron Mike’ opted to come out of retirement to fight YouTuber Paul, with an age gap of 30 years between them.

Veteran Tyson, 58, has not boxed since an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr in November 2020 – while his last professional bout came in 2005 when he was beaten by Kevin McBride.

Paul, meanwhile, has quickly risen up the ranks in boxing by defeating a number of former MMA stars, including Tyron Woodley, Anderson Silva and Nate Diaz – before being beaten by pro boxer Tommy Fury last year.

The influencer led some to believe he was pursuing traditional boxers after beating professionals Andre August and Ryan Bourland, but he has instead opted for another money-spinning fight against a legend of the sport that left fans and boxing experts scratching their heads.

There has already been concern from the likes of Eddie Hearn, who called the fight ‘sad’ – and UFC star McGregor joined that chorus by calling the match-up ‘strange’ and insisted he had little interest in tuning in.

‘Oh jeez,’ the Irishman said when asked what he thought about the fight – via Happy Punch.

‘It’s a bit strange, you know. My interest is low. I don’t know. I don’t understand it.

‘I wish well for Mike [Tyson].’

The fight is being held at the 80,000-seater AT&T Stadium in Texas, which is the home of NFL team Dallas Cowboys, and it will be streamed live on Netflix.

Tyson said: ‘I’m very much looking forward to stepping into the ring with Jake Paul.

‘He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a “kid” can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT.’

Paul added on Instagram: ‘It’s time to put Iron Mike to sleep.

‘It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard.

‘Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons.

‘My sights are set on becoming a world champion, and now I have a chance to prove myself against the greatest heavyweight champion ever, the baddest man on the planet and the most dangerous boxer of all time. This will be the fight of a lifetime.’

Hearn had voiced his opposition to the event and said it threatened to diminish Tyson’s legacy.

‘For me it’s really sad because Mike Tyson was one of my idols growing up, and to see him fighting at 57, 58… but I also understand that a lot of people are going to tune in and watch,’ Hearn told Mail Sport.

‘It’s an entertainment event, Netflix, great to see them involved in boxing. I think it will do really well. But it’s just not really one for me.’

‘I don’t think you should be fighting at 57 years old. But also the guy was one of the greatest ever fighters,’ Hearn continued.

‘Why do you want to go in at five per cent of what you were and lose to a guy like Jake Paul?

‘He shouldn’t have to do that, but the world is the world we live in.’
