Teddy Atlas has no issue with Jake Paul vs. 57-year-old Mike Tyson

A lot has been said about Jake Paul’s upcoming bout against 57-year-old Mike Tyson.

While some have criticized the matchup due to the 30-year age gap, others have grown intrigued by two combat sports stars colliding. Teddy Atlas, legendary boxing trainer, is on board with the fight and has no issue with Paul fighting Tyson.

Atlas likes that Paul is fighting someone heavier than him, as it’s usually the opposite case. He also thinks that Tyson, even at 57, still has power behind his punches, which makes him a threat to Paul.

“First of all, he’s actually fighting a guy who finally – I know he’s much older than him – but he’s actually the bigger guy because Paul fights about cruiserweight,” Atlas said on his YouTube channel. “(Tyson) is naturally the bigger guy. He’s fighting a legendary iconic fighter, a guy who’s one of the greatest punchers in heavyweight history, one of the greatest punchers ever – with either hand, and he’s got combinations with speed and power.

“Yeah, he’s 58 years old. Yeah, the end of his career wasn’t too good before he got out. But one of the last things that go with a fighter, it’s his power.”

Given the threat that Atlas thinks Tyson still poses, plus his age, Atlas thinks Paul is in a lose-lose situation, and that’s why he credits him for taking the fight.

“I think this is a very dangerous fight for Paul,” Atlas said. “I think early on, I think he might be making a mistake. First of all, for me, he don’t have a lot (to win) other than money, and he’s made plenty of money. There’s not a lot of winning on his side because if he wins, they say he’s 58 years old and if he loses they say he’s 58 years old, and he lost to a 58-year-old guy. For me, he’s got a lot more to lose than Tyson – a lot more.

“… There’s nothing to lose for Tyson. If he wins, he’s even bigger. People are going to thank him. ‘Thank you for ending this charade’ – that’s what they’re going to say. ‘Thank you for teaching this guy that you’re either a fighter or you’re not a fighter. You can’t go from being a YouTuber to being a fighter.’ For the people that believe that, that feel that way, that don’t like Paul, they’re going to prop Tyson even higher.”

Paul vs. Tyson is scheduled for July 20 at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium and will live stream on Netflix. The exact ruleset and details on whether this will be a fully professional bout are unclear at the moment and have yet to be released by the promoters.

Atlas questioned whether it will be a fully sanctioned professional fight, and not because of the reasons many may think.

“Unless this is a WWE agreement, which I don’t know that it is – I never said this before because I think all these fights are legitamate, and they are and have been – but this one makes me wonder,” Atlas said. “I’m not questioning the integrity of Paul. In fact, I like his integrity. I like what I’ve seen in the guy. … I’m just saying, if there was a time I would question it, this would be the time because I can’t see, unless Paul is that confident, that Tyson is too old now, and he’s that good, because Paul has been getting more confident, and he does have a good right hand and does punch well with it and Tyson leads with left hooks. Maybe Paul thinks he can hit him with a right hand, I don’t know. All I know is that this is the first time I’ve said, ‘I wonder if there’s an agreement, because if there’s no agreement, Paul might be making a mistake. … I’m surprised Paul is taking this risk. … Power doesn’t disappear even when you’re old. He’s still got speed in the combinations. He’s still got that style.”

Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson: Date, fight time, rules, undercard, latest odds, how to watch, purse and more

Mike Tyson will make his return to the boxing ring this summer when he fights Jake Paul in a shock crossover bout.

It is four years since Tyson’s last exhibition, against Roy Jones Jr, and nearly two decades since he was beaten by Kevin McBride in his final professional fight in 2005.

There was huge surprise, therefore, when it was announced Tyson would be taking on Paul in July, at which point he will be 58, at the 80,000-capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.Paul knocked out former basketball player Nate Robinson on the undercard of Tyson’s exhibition with Jones, and is now 9-1 as a professional. That sole defeat was against Tommy Fury, with the wins coming largely against former MMA stars and little-known boxers.

The fight will be promoted by Paul’s company Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), with this the latest step on a boxing journey he continues to claim will end with him becoming world champion.

“It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard. Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons,” said Paul.

“My sights are set on becoming a world champion, and now I have a chance to prove myself against the greatest heavyweight champion ever, the baddest man on the planet and the most dangerous boxer of all time. This will be the fight of a lifetime.”

Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson will take place on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.

No timings for the card have yet been confirmed, but Arlington is five hours behind UK time and so the main event is likely to be at approximately 4am GMT in the early hours of Sunday morning.

How to watch Paul vs Tyson

The bout will be screened live on Netflix, with this the platform’s first move into live boxing.

There has been a shifts towards sporting action in recent months, with The Netflix Cup held in November as a crossover between golf and Formula One stars. Carlos Alcaraz faced Rafael Nadal in The Netflix Slam earlier this month, an exhibition tennis match that took place in Las Vegas.

    Paul vs Tyson rules

It remains to be seen whether the bout is an exhibition or sanctioned as a professional contest.

While Derek Chisora has claimed the two fighters will wear headguards and 18lbs gloves, Paul’s business partner Nakisa Bidarian dismissed that suggestion.

“Unequivocally there is no headgear for Paul vs Tyson,” he posted on social media. “Haters spreading fake news, but it won’t stop the tens of millions of views.”

Details on the number and length of rounds have not been released, but Tyson’s exhibition with Roy Jones Jr had eight two-minute rounds.

Reports suggest the fighters are keen for it to be a professional bout, but a decision has not been made by the Texas commission.

Fights on the undercard of Paul vs Tyson will be announced in the coming weeks.

    Paul vs Tyson purse

UFC legend Henry Cejudo is a close friend of Tyson, with the pair previously hosting a podcast today, and he recently suggested that 57-year-old is set to take home in the region of $20m for fighting Paul.

“I mean, you know what I respect, Uncle Mike… but it obviously takes two to tango,” Cejudo said.

“I feel like there is probably a really good payday for Mike. He’s probably going to wind up making close to about $20mi and he’s about to turn 58 years old. Literally, Jake is 27 and Mike is 57.

“I don’t like it but I was with Mike when he was getting ready for his Roy Jones Jr. fight. This dude is disciplined, he gets moody when he’s in fight camp and doesn’t smoke as much. He runs every day at 5’o’clock in the morning. If there’s anybody super ferocious who can potentially put this dude out, it is Mike.”

It is unclear how much Paul will make, but he claimed to have earned $30m when losing to Tommy Fury last year.

Simulation shows what Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight would really look like – and predicts the clash will be over in round 2!

A simulation of a fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul predicted the bout would come to a conclusive end in the second round.

The combat sports world was rocked on Thursday by the news that Paul will take on the former undisputed heavyweight king in a clash set to be broadcast on Netflix.

The event is set to take place at the 80,000-capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on July 20.

It is not yet clear whether the clash will be an exhibition or an officially sanctioned professional contest.

The pair have been in talks to face one another inside the ring for some time, with Tyson revealing last year that attending Paul’s clash with Tommy Fury led to him considering a return to the ring.

As such a fan-made simulation from the 2010 game Fight Night Champion was posted online earlier this year.

In the simulation Tyson dominates the YouTube star turned boxer, scoring a knockdown in the opening frame before knocking Paul out with a left hook in the second round.

In a trailer for the bout released by the streaming giant the 57-year-old Tyson insisted he is looking forward to the challenge of facing Paul.

‘I’m very much looking forward to stepping into the ring with Jake Paul,’ he said.

‘He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a “kid” can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT.’

Paul, who won his latest fight against Ryan Bourland on Saturday, wrote on Instagram: ‘It’s time to put Iron Mike to sleep.’

He added: ‘It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard.

A source said: “They looked very cosy and like they were having fun with each other.”

The pair have been spending plenty of time with each other since AJ’s win over Francis Ngannou in neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

Moments after his KO, AJ rushed over to Kika for a ringside cuddle and kiss.

But he has always reminded fans that his easy to drive Passat is among the favourites on his driveway.

Fury looked to have added a Lamborghini Urus – worth nearly £200,000 – to his driveway after showing off the car on Instagram.

But now the Gypsy King – understood to have made around £100million in the ring – revealed the 4×4 was not actually his.

He told The Stomping Ground: “It’s not even my car. No, I just borrowed it off a mate to do a video in. Not bad, is it?”

On the same day Fury showed off the Lambo, he went shopping with wife Paris and joked that he splashed all his cash on the motor.

He said: “After spending all the money on the Lambo, Paris I think we need to save some money on the shopping.”

Fury was gobsmacked at the price of a £6.10 Nutella jar and instead opted for the cheaper £2.75 Asda’s own spread.

And he added in the interview: “I just don’t see the point in it, people say, ‘You can afford it.’

“But it’s not about being able to afford it, it’s about wasting your money, innit? That you’ve worked hard for.

“So it is what it is. I’ll never change, if I had a billion or ten quid in my pocket, I’m still the same old G.”

So his comeback – which is not yet confirmed as a sanctioned fight or an exhibition – has come under criticism amid safety fears.

He told The Stomping Ground: “I think it’s fantastic for boxing.

“You’ve got a legend in Mike Tyson. You’ve got a YouTube boxer who’s come into the game and blew it up and he’s got millions of followers and millions of views and millions of eyes.

“Good, bad or indifferent. Some people love him, some people hate him.

Formula E has lofty ambitions to overtake Formula 1 one day after carnival thriller in Sao Paulo… the sport is winning a legion of fans among women and neutrals thanks to its unpredictable races and sustainability plan

Just hours after touching down in São Paulo, talk quickly turns to the David and Goliath battle between Formula E and Formula One. We all know which one is Goliath, but just like the classic tale, the underdog has a few tricks up its sleeve to level the playing field.

Formula E is not a sport on everyone’s radar – it was once mocked by Bernie Ecclestone as ‘like driving electric lawnmowers around a car park’ – but as the world creeps towards making electric cars the norm, it soon will be.

FE has a contract to race with such vehicles until 2036. Their time in the sun is coming and people are starting to sit up and take notice. The fact that ex-Formula One chief Ecclestone was a VIP guest at this weekend’s race, won by Sam Bird, is a testament to that.

’10 years ago, I thought the first race would be the last,’ he said in the paddock. ‘So I’m very pleased to see it’s something quite super – technically it’s at Formula 1 levels.’

Technical performance aside, central to everything powering Formula E’s rise is its drive for sustainability. The organisation’s entire carbon footprint – including fan travel – is less than that of one Formula 1 team. They power all their events using renewable energy, resulting in a 90 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to ordinary diesel.

They’ve also saved 1,348 tons of greenhouse gases by transporting the majority of their freight and equipment to races by road and sea.

These efforts have won them a legion of supporters and that fanbase is evolving at a surging rate. CEO Jeff Dodds says this gives him ‘grade A confidence’ that Formula E can not just grow exponentially, but one day even usurp the titans of Formula One.

‘We are a baby, but we’re a baby that already has 400 million fans around the world,’ Dodds said in Brazil. ‘We are already 40 per cent of the size of F1 and we’re only nine years old, whereas F1 has been around for 75 years. That gives us A-grade confidence that there’s a growth available to us.

‘We’re also delivering a different kind of fanbase. Roughly half of our fanbase are female – unheard of in motorsport. Roughly half of our fanbase is under the age of 40. Unheard of in motorsport. And about 85 per cent of our fans say they will pay a premium to buy from a brand that will focus on the environment and sustainability. We are talking to a different group of people.’

Their firm grip on the electric car racing scene also gives Dodds cause to believe that his sport could soon become the ‘pre-imminent sport in the world’. As car manufacturers begin transitioning away to electric, it won’t be long before FE comes to the table with a formidable hand, he says.

‘When Formula One was founded, it wasn’t as a sustainability platform. Now they’re trying to reverse engineer themselves into something more sustainable,’ he said.

‘Battery electric vehicles are growing at around 20 per cent around the world. When I look at what’s going to happen, our cars are only going one way – they’re getting faster and faster.

‘When I put that all together, I can sit there and say that our ambition has to be the biggest, maybe we don’t get there, but is has to be the pre-imminent racing series in the world.’

Around 70 per cent of cars at the same for each team to make for an exciting Championship

Around 70 per cent of cars at the same for each team to make for an exciting Championship

Reigning Formula E champion Jake Dennis agreed with Dodds – he thinks the sky is the limit.

‘I don’t think it’s a stupid claim, he said. ‘I don’t think it will happen in my lifetime, but the gaps are only going to get closer and closer. F1 is going to get closer to becoming completely electric – we’re going to grow more and more to the public eye.

‘What Formula One is doing right now is unsustainable. It’s making changes in 2026 to come towards electric, but it doesn’t beat what we can do.’

It would be foolish to suggest that FE had any chance of toppling F1 as the premier motorsport any time soon. It can’t come close to competing with its resources, its profile, it’s glitz and glamour, it’s fanbase or its catalogue of star drivers.

Instead, Formula E has focused on making the most exciting championship possible. Around 70 per cent of a Formula E car is effectively the same for every team. That means that when it comes to race day, picking a winner is becoming increasingly difficult. Dennis won the first of two races in last month’s Saudi Arabian event. In the second, he finished in 12th.

Another thing helping to side things up is an innovative feature In qualifying, where drivers are split into ‘duels’ as they contest a quarter-final, semi-final and final to determine who starts on pole.

A particular bugbear of Formula One fans has been the lack of a consistent, strong rival to Max Verstappen – who has reigned as world champion for three years and has already claimed the first two races of the F1 season.

‘When you have some of the best drivers in the world, then the availability for a team to differentiate using software only, it guarantees high competition,’ Dodds added. ‘If you look at last year, coming into the last championship you had three teams who could win.

Chris Lynch, events experience director at Formula E, is fuelling the organisation’s constant desire to keep pushing the throttle on excitement levels.

‘I always say I want someone to become a fan for life – not just for a day,’ he told Mail Sport. ‘I want people to come and be blown away by it so they tell their friends and bring them next time.

‘That’s the ethos of my team. We try to get them as close to the drivers and the sport as possible. We do autograph sessions in the pit lanes, while fans are treated to driving simulators and podium ceremonies in the fan village.’

But with F1 now doing glitzy shows in Vegas, is there pressure to compete? Quite the opposite. Lynch instead claims F1 are the ones copying them.

‘I don’t think we have pressure from F1, I think F1 are trying to keep up with us,’ he continued. ‘We did a pre-race show – inspired by the Super Bowl half time show – with the singer Raye in London. After that, Formula One started doing their pre-race stuff and copying us, as well as special effects on our podium.

‘Because we’re a small, agile company, we can do things very quickly. It takes F1 longer to get in step with the trends. Our fanbase is nowhere near F1’s but I think we’re more innovative and exciting. Eventually it is realistic [to overtake F1].’

The São Paulo event exhibited what’s possible in this sport as X fans descended on the track in full voice to create a carnival atmosphere – while dancers dressed head to toe in colourful feathers and sequins parading up and down the grid.

The Brazilians were in great spirits as they cheered and chanted throughout while going crazy for special guest – their countryman, former F1 and FE driver Felipe Massa.

Bird capped off a frantic race full of overtakes galore – 212 to be precise – as he saw off Mitch Evans and Oliver Rowland to edge across the finish line.

I was lucky enough to watch part of the race from inside Andretti’s garage as they looked to drive their star driver Dennis to a strong finish.

Rather than debating DRS and pit stops regularly seen in F1, the main strategy was to guide Dennis on where to consolidate and conserve his energy reserves.

In Formula E, drivers can pick up extra power by driving over designated areas of the track that send a signal to their car, providing it with a boost of electricity – adding another element of competitiveness.

Dennis is a test driver for Formula One so he knows the differences between the two cars better than anyone – and comes away with a poignant statement.

‘F1 has more power, it’s a simple as that,’ he added. ‘We can make these cars go five seconds faster, but FE isn’t trying to achieve the fastest lap time or the highest top speed, he added. ‘We’re trying to achieve the best net zero racing series.’

So while FE has a need for speed when it comes to its trajectory, being faster isn’t what will what will propel it forwards. So what will?

‘We need a Drive to Survive!’ Dennis says – referencing the hit Netflix show showcasing the F1 world. ‘Formula E needs that one moment. There’s nothing wrong with it in terms of quality, it’s just the exposure [that’s lacking].’

Ngannou – making his boxing debut – has called on the help of American icon Tyson.

The reformed Baddest Man on The Planet has been coaching the Cameroonian powerhouse.

And Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum has felt compelled to warn Fury over Tyson’s influence and Ngannou’s power.

Arum posted: “Mike Tyson is doing a great job training and advising Francis Ngannou.

“I’ve cautioned Tyson Fury to be very careful, particularly of Ngannou’s incredible right hand.”

Fury was actually named after boxing’s youngest ever heavyweight champ of all time.

So he was left fuming with the news his idol will be in the opposite corner against him.

Fury, 35, told Sky Sports: “I think that it’s sad, actually.

“The man that I am named after, a legend, has to go against me and then come out as a loser, having lost to a man who was named after him.

“I think that it’s sad and I think that he should be in my corner, not the opposing corner, but business is business and I understand that it’s strictly business.”

But in response, Tyson, 57, said to TNT Sports: “This is business, and he understands.”

  • Jake Paul urges Mike Tyson to sign $300m heavyweight comeback fight

Jake Paul urges Mike Tyson to sign $300m heavyweight comeback fight

Paul has suggested he would be willing to compete at heavyweight if Tyson agrees to an encounter

Jake Paul has told Mike Tyson to “have some fun” by agreeing to fight the YouTuber, who is prepared to bulk up to take on the heavyweight great.

Paul has been angling for a chance to take on Tyson, a former undisputed heavyweight world champion, as he seeks the next step in a boxing career that has thus far of five wins over internet personalities, former basketball players and mixed martial artists.

Tyson has so far been reluctant to accept the offer of a bout, suggesting it would take a significant fee to convince him to come out of retirement.

The 55-year-old fought Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition match in November 2020.

He has now been urged by Paul to grant him his request for a fight, with the 25-year-old prepared to compete at heavyweight.

“For sure,” Paul told The Journey podcast when asked if he wanted a duel with Tyson.

“I joke with my friends about it, I’m like I’ll start eating Krispy Kreme doughnuts, move up to heavyweight and fight Mike Tyson. That would actually excite me and that’s a $200-300million event.

“So Mike, if you’re watching this let’s have some fun. New school vs old school and I think that’s something that the fans would want to see.”

Tyson’s meeting with Jones Jr. was the most successful pay-per-view boxing event of 2020, and was scored a split draw.

The undercard included Paul’s victory over former NBA player Nate Robinson.
