The conceited Drive to Survive star who gives clowns a bad name – and 10 reasons Max Verstappen will stay at Red Bull

I get a sense that Max Verstappen wants to stay at Red Bull. And I’ll give you 10 reasons why.

That was the number of wins the driver of his time won consecutively last season. Hardly anyone knew it, but he can match that feat in Melbourne at the Australian Grand Prix this weekend, something nobody ever achieved before his historic achievement in 2023. He’s on nine back-to-back triumphs, and we take it almost for granted.

So why would he leave Red Bull, the team that has given the Dutchman the car of his dreams?

Mercedes want him. Who doesn’t? But Mercedes are in semi-meltdown to an extent that Lewis Hamilton has jumped ship for Ferrari next year.

Verstappen had been toying with the notion of a move in light of the scandal over his boss Christian Horner sending ‘coercive’ messages to a female colleague. His father Jos may have preferred he left. But Jos is not here, and Max wants calm. He also wants the best machinery, and is signed up to Red Bull until 2028.

Max Verstappen looks set to stay at Red Bull and his ongoing success makes it easy to see why

Doubts had been raised over Verstappen's future due to the scandal over his boss Christian Horner's 'coercive' messages to a female colleague

But Verstappen is in the car of his dreams and on the way to a fourth straight world title, so why would he leave?

But Verstappen is in the car of his dreams and on the way to a fourth straight world title, so why would he leave?

He has surely toyed with the idea of moving, and I recently thought he would, actually, despite winning the two opening races, in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Some of those around him said he would rather exit than see Horner stay on.

Sores persist, of course, but Verstappen said on Thursday: ‘I think there’s every reason to be happy, right? The car’s going really well. There are many great people in the team that are constantly pushing for better results, so for me that’s what I focus on.

‘I focus on the performance, I’m happy, and, when I go home, I don’t think about any other thing because it’s pretty fixed where I am, and that’s where I want to be.

‘I think it’s definitely been the best start so far to a year for me personally in the car. It’s just a good balance, but I think also as a team we operated really well without too many mistakes.

‘So, of course, I’m very happy with that, and I hope that we can continue that way. We try to keep on learning what we can do better, but it’s been very positive.’

    Why move, Max?

    Dickson’s legacy lives on

A poignant trip to Melbourne. The last Daily Mail sports journalist to travel this way was Mike Dickson. He distinguished these pages and his paper for 33 years, alternatively as tennis and cricket correspondent.

But, while covering the Australian Open in January, he collapsed and died. He was 59. I and a few pals will raise a glass to his memory here this sad week.

    Walker adored Down Under

I always think of Murray Walker when visiting Melbourne. Amazingly, the voice of motor racing was as well known in Australia as he was in England, a kind of Richie Benaud in reverse.

He would come here for the V8 Supercars, as well as F1, and broadcast with typical vim on free-to-air TV. It was part of his legend.

I remember when I was starting out as Formula One correspondent for this paper he offered his wise counsel. In that first interview he rhapsodised about travelling Down Under.

‘Australia,’ he said in high-octane decibels, ‘is the most marvellous place in the world. Switch on the taps, and they work.’ Which sounded like a somewhat low bar, but I knew what he meant – creature comforts, I think.

He continued to come this way well towards the last of his 97 years, often giving talks on cruises, frequently with Sir Stirling Moss.

He would be delighted from my hotel window, I can see Flinders Street station, the Anglican cathedral, the Rod Laver Arena and the MCG.

I'll be thinking of Murray Walker this week, who was just as well known in Australia as England

    Memorial for Moss

A fellow devoted Daily Mail reader will be celebrated at Westminster Abbey on May 8. Sir Stirling Moss, who died on Easter Sunday 2020, 58 years minus a day after the Goodwood crash that finished his career, at a venue he lit up through his deeds of exceptional brilliance.

It had been his widow Susie’s dearest wish to host a suitable occasion to mark Stirling’s death aged 90, a desire stymied by lockdown regulations.

But she died last year of a ‘a broken heart’, having carried his ashes around their house in their Bond-style Mayfair pad with all its gadgets – TV screens that came out of the ceiling and the like – in her agonised mourning.

Now, a memorial will be held at the Abbey. Sir Jackie Stewart is among the speakers.

    Sweary Steiner should fade away

If anyone has fallen for his own publicity it is Guenther Steiner. Nobody had ever heard of him before Netflix’s Drive to Survive and nobody has been able to shut him up since.

To quote Bernie Ecclestone of the otherwise unknown engineer: ‘He gives clowns a bad name.’

Steiner’s skill extended to swearing profusely. Nobody has made so much fame out of expletives. An act that is not as funny as he imagines, his record as of last year was to finish last of all teams, in his role as boss of Haas, now relinquished.

He says he stayed on too long at the American team. A view I wouldn’t disagree with. But not for the reasons he believes. The conceited one maintains, he wasn’t able to run the Haas as he would wish.

Well, the budget cap was meant to level the playing field, to help the smaller teams (the less successful ones, actually) catch up, yet Steiner pulled off the feat of finishing rank bottom, a low ebb he combined with a propensity for wilfully slagging off his own drivers for the cameras, Mick Schumacher first among the victims of his crassly sharp tongue.

Steiner is hawking himself about as some sort of media celebrity, doing TV work in Melbourne. He should, may I politely suggest, be quiet, and drift away to the obscurity from which he emerged.

Liberty’s greed is the real scandal

Nobody gives Mohammed Ben Sulayem a break. He is trying to run Formula One governance, as president of the FIA.

For a year and more, his enemies have been trying to bring him down. The worst they have slung at him is that he was reluctant to sanction the Las Vegas Grand Prix last season.

The race was, in fact, held because he approved its safety requirements. So it’s a strange accusation to make – one put forward from an obviously biased ‘whistleblower’.

Stories against him have been briefed prodigiously from day one of his election in late 2021, as he seeks to assert the FIA’s role as – would you believe? – the rulers of the sport.

The enemies of Mohammed Ben Sulayem (pictured) have been trying to bring him down, but it is the greed of Liberty that is the real scandal

The enemies of Mohammed Ben Sulayem (pictured) have been trying to bring him down, but it is the greed of Liberty that is the real scandal

So widely and successfully has the malice seeped through that I am pretty much the only journalist to register that he has been much maligned in a concerted attempt to discredit him.

He is not paid a penny. Yet Liberty, who own the sport, pick up every pound they can. In their greed, they have extended the calendar to 2024 races. All cash for them, thank you very much.

Imagine if B.C. Ecclestone, and CVC Capital Partners, for whom he acted as CEO for the last years of his revolutionary tenure that ran until 2017, had been as blatantly avaricious in this unprecedented manner of expansionism. He would have been pilloried to high heaven.

Liberty are testing human endurance by making the season so long, 24 rounds, and I’m not a moaner on this front, or any other, yet hardly anyone says a word against them. It’s a scandal – and sue me if I’m wrong.

  • Nico Hulkenberg sends warning to 18-year-old superstar Oliver Bearman that his sensational F1 debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix ‘could be forgotten’ if the Ferrari driver does not deliver in F2

Nico Hulkenberg sends warning to 18-year-old superstar Oliver Bearman that his sensational F1 debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix ‘could be forgotten’ if the Ferrari driver does not deliver in F2

Nico Hulkenberg has sent a warning to teenage Ferrari sensation Oliver Bearman claiming he needs to stay focused on performing in Formula Two this season, despite dazzling on debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The Haas driver also claimed that the 18-year-old’s sensational start to life in Formula One ‘could be forgotten’ quickly if he doesn’t follow up his seventh-placed finish in Jeddah with a good year on the feeder circuit.

Bearman was drafted in at the last moment to replace Carlos Sainz at the second race of the season after the Spaniard had withdrawn with appendicitis. Ferrari confirmed this week that Sainz will return to the grid for this weekend’s Melbourne Grand Prix.

Speculation has arisen that Bearman could be gunning to take a seat on the grid next season at Ferrari’s customer team Haas. But Hulkenberg urged the emerging star to stay focused on his responsibilities with Prema Racing in Formula Two.

‘I think it’s very early and way too early to say that, the German driver told Autosport when asked if he was competing with Kevin Magnussen and Bearman for a place at Haas for next season.

‘I think he’s [Bearman’s] got a big job on his hands in F2 first of all, because otherwise if he’s not doing well there this Jeddah race is going to be forgotten in two days. You know how this business works.

‘So I think quite a bit of pressure on him there to deliver now in F2, actually.’

The 6ft 3in Essex teenager currently sits 22nd in the Formula Two standings and is yet to win a point for his side this season.

With Sainz now fit to race, Bearman is set to return for Prema Racing as Formula Two also arrives in Melbourne this weekend for the third race of the season.

Bearman joined Ferrari’s drivers academy at age 16 and has risen through the ranks to become one of the most promising young prospects in motorsport.

During the formative years of his career, the British driver won the Italian Formula Four championship and the ADAC Formula Four Championships in 2021, before stepping up to Formula Three in 2022. He’d finish third that season, earning a promotion to Formula Two in 2023 – placing sixth last season.

After taking part in two FP1 sessions with Haas in 2023, he looks set to drive in six sessions this season.

While the motorsport fans will be watching his development eagerly, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur has hinted at what his season could look like.

‘It’s a good signal for Ollie for sure, it’s an important milestone,’ Vasseur said, speaking on the 18-year-old’s debut at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

‘You have to consider Jeddah is a step, not the final target. He did well this weekend, but he will have other challenges in front of him in the future with F2.

‘He will do a couple of FP1s with us and Haas during the season and all of you, including me, in six month’s time, we won’t speak any more about Jeddah, we’ll speak about Mexico, Brazil, and if he’s doing well or not.

‘Every single day will be a new challenge. But for sure, if he’s keeping the same approach as today, it will go well.’

The rules Geri Halliwell has placed on husband and Red Bull boss Christian Horner ahead of Aussie F1 GP – with the Spice Girl not making the trip to Melbourne

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has been reportedly left ‘hurt’ after his wife Geri Halliwell laid down some relationship rules for him ahead of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne commencing today.

However, the 50-year-old has agreed to his wife’s demands as the saga surrounding his job following a ‘sexting’ scandal with a Red Bull employee continues to rumble on.

It’s understood Halliwell has no plans to fly out to Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix.

Before the 2024 Formula One season started, Red Bull Racing investigated a complaint made by a woman who works for the team.

Halliwell has been standing by her man following an alleged sexting scandal. Horner was cleared of any wrongdoing, but messages surfaced in a WhatsApp group just a day later

Horner, who is the boss of Red Bull Racing and married to former Spice Girls star Halliwell, was found not guilty of any inappropriate behaviour just before the first practice session in Bahrain.

But then, things got complicated as messages that appeared very personal and were supposedly sent by Horner to the woman at work were released and shared via WhatsApp to Formula One stakeholders and journalists only a day after he was cleared.

This has brought attention back to Horner’s actions and put him and the Red Bull Racing team under the spotlight as they get ready for the racing season.

Halliwell has laid down the law ahead of practice at Albert Park today with a list of rules Horner must abide by in her absence.

‘One is that Christian cuts or reduces contact with the woman — but that is difficult because of her role at Red Bull,’ News Corp reported.

‘And she has definitely had her say over what messages he sends. For obvious reasons, Geri would like the female colleague — who she knew before her appointment — to be out of the picture as much as possible.

‘But they cannot sack her as there are no grounds to do so.’

The Spice Girls icon stood by her husband during the opening rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia but will be a no-show in Melbourne this weekend.

However GBN has reported that Horner is not impressed with the list or his wife’s apparent mistrust in him.

‘Christian was initially hurt by the idea of a list of rules and said it felt like her showing distrust,’ a source said.

‘She insisted that while she still loves him, she has to protect herself and urged him to put himself in her shoes to understand the torment she’s endured with the public humiliation and embarrassment.

‘Christian eventually backed down and has agreed to do whatever it takes.’

The saga threatens to derail Red Bull’s period of dominance, with three-time F1 champion Max Verstappen reportedly considering a move to rivals Mercedes.

Red Bull continues to stand by Horner who has been team principal of the team ever since his appointment in 2005.

How the Christian Horner and Geri Halliwell dramas engulfing Red Bull could dictate Daniel Ricciardo’s future

Daniel Ricciardo‘s hopes of a fairytale finish to his Formula One career with Red Bull could hinge on the ongoing drama engulfing the team – and how many allies he has left.

The West Australian driver returns to Melbourne for the Australian F1 Grand Prix with Red Bull-owned RB, hoping the chess pieces move in his favour for a return to the Red Bull main team.

A strong result in Melbourne and in upcoming races will certainly help, but the ongoing drama at Red Bull may work against the 34-year-old.

Ricciardo infamously walked out on Red Bull in 2018 when the team was routinely trailing Mercedes, a decision he has admitted to regretting ever since.

Since then, the Aussie has endured troubled stints at Renault and McLaren before Red Bull boss Christian Horner threw him a lifeline, first as a reserve driver with AlphaTauri [now RB] and then a regular seat in the cockpit.

While they had their clashes in 2018, they remain strong friends and allies to this day.

However Horner’s future remains shrouded in doubt because of a sexting allegation that won’t go away and reports of an increasingly fractured relationship with superstar driver Max Verstappen.

On one hand, if Verstappen walks, Ricciardo could be in the box seat to return to Red Bull to finish his career.

However, if it is Horner that exits, the Aussie may lose his biggest ally in the room and face a very uncertain future.

Horner was accused of inappropriate conduct with a Red Bull staffer, before an independent investigation cleared him.

Then a day later texts reportedly sent between Horner and the staffer were released on WhatsApp to media and F1 stakeholders.

The employee is currently stood down on full pay and is appealing the decision.

Publicly, Horner’s wife Geri Halliwell has supported her man, but she also reportedly gave him a list of rules to follow in Australia and is not attending the Melbourne Grand Prix.

And Verstappen is reportedly upset with the state of affairs and considering leaving Red Bull before his contract expires in 2028.

Ricciardo is thankful for all the help he has received from Horner, but knows he cannot control what happens next – except to perform on the track.

‘I think when the sport for me was kind of nearly taken away… a year ago there was no guarantee I would be back here,’ he said.

‘That kind of long vision or long-term way of thinking is just not where I’m at.

‘So right now it’s really focused on where I am. We’ve got a big task ahead. Try to do what I can there.

‘Try to kick some butt and then see where the wind takes me.’

One thing is for certain, the constant focus on the Red Bull soap opera off the track is starting to grate on Verstappen who faced around 10 minutes of grilling by media on Friday.

‘Would we have liked to have more talk about our car? Probably, yes,’ Verstappen said about the negative attention on Red Bull.

‘But we just try to keep on working on the performance and to keep winning.’

And he would not be drawn on his future, wanting to keep his focus squarely on securing top spot at Albert Park.

‘From what I know, everything is handled in the right way,’ he said.

‘I’m not going into any further details from that side because I don’t know more than that.

‘And I also don’t want to know because that’s not my job or my task within the team.’

Joshua is coming off an emphatic knockout over ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou, who Fury controversially beat on points in October.

And now the Gypsy King is set to face Oleksandr Usyk on May 18 in the heavyweight division’s first four-belt unification.

The pair are contracted to an immediate rematch but Hearn hopes if Fury wins AJ could jump the queue so that their Battle of Britain can take place.

And the promoter even believes Saudi powerbroker Turki Al-Sheikh will bring one of potentially two bouts between them to the UK.

Hearn told The Sports Agents podcast: “This is a gentleman called Turki Al-Sheikh, who is obviously a very influential figure in sports and entertainment in Saudi Arabia.

“He’s also the biggest fight fan I’ve ever met. And quite amazingly, he’s now talking about staging two Fury versus AJ fights – one in Saudi Arabia and one at Wembley Stadium.”

Al-Sheikh has been the man to finally get Hearn and rival-turned business partner Frank Warren to come together.

And it has seen Saudi – more specifically Riyadh – become the hub for major boxing events.

It leaves fans fearing they will no longer be able to watch their heroes fight on home soil due to the money on offer in the Middle East.

But Hearn has assured that Al-Sheikh himself is looking to bring the Brit icons back home as part of a domestic double header.

Oleksandr Usyk grimaces as he watches Anthony Joshua’s brutal KO of Francis Ngannou
He said: “He’s one of those guys that listens and reads everything.

“So he’s definitely read about, ‘I wish this fight was at Wembley,’ or ‘It’s a shame the fight is in Saudi Arabia.’

“I mean, we really must have more of a global vision in sport, boxing doesn’t just sit here but two Brits, fighting for the undisputed world championship, I think he would probably bring one of them to the UK, I really do. And that financially, they’ve got the ability to do that.”

In the latest interview, Mike Tyson said he wanted to prove that age has no meaning when returning to boxing: ‘I think Jake Paul needs an ambulance after round 2

In a bold declaration that defies conventional wisdom, boxing legend Mike Tyson asserts his determination to prove that age is just a number in his comeback to the ring. In his latest interview, Tyson vows to make a statement by delivering a swift victory over YouTube sensation-turned-boxer Jake Paul, calling for him to surrender as early as the first round.

Tyson’s words come as a rallying cry for athletes of all ages, challenging the notion that advancing years inevitably equate to a decline in performance. With his sights set firmly on his return to boxing prominence, Tyson’s unwavering confidence and determination serve as an inspiration to fighters young and old alike.

The call-out to Jake Paul adds an intriguing twist to Tyson’s comeback narrative, pitting the seasoned veteran against the brash newcomer in a high-stakes showdown that promises fireworks. As anticipation builds for their potential matchup, fans are left eagerly speculating on the outcome of this clash of generations.

For Tyson, the fight represents more than just a chance to prove his doubters wrong—it’s a chance to reclaim his rightful place among boxing’s elite and cement his legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats. With his eyes fixed firmly on the prize, Tyson’s message to Jake Paul is clear: surrender is not an option, and victory is inevitable.

As the boxing world waits with bated breath for the showdown between these two formidable competitors, one thing is certain: Mike Tyson’s return to the ring is set to be nothing short of legendary, proving once and for all that age is no barrier to greatness.

Jake Paul Was Criticized As “cowardly” For Fighting 57-year-old Mike Tyson By Netizens

In the realm of boxing, controversies often stir the pot, but the latest bout featuring Jake Paul has ignited a firestorm of criticism. The YouTube sensation turned boxer has found himself in hot water after announcing his upcoming fight against the legendary Mike Tyson, who, at 57 years old, is widely revered for his illustrious career but not necessarily for his current prowess in the ring.

Jake Paul, known for his flamboyant persona and knack for generating buzz, has once again managed to grab headlines. However, this time, the attention comes with a heavy dose of backlash. Netizens worldwide have taken to social media platforms to denounce Paul’s decision, branding it as “cowardly” and “exploitative.” Many argue that pitting a seasoned veteran like Tyson against a relatively inexperienced opponent like Paul is not only disrespectful to Tyson’s legacy but also a dangerous mismatch.

Critics highlight the vast difference in skill, experience, and age between the two fighters, emphasizing the potential risks involved in such a bout. While Paul boasts a burgeoning boxing career with several high-profile victories under his belt, including wins against fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib and former NBA player Nate Robinson, his opponents have been far from the caliber of Tyson.

Moreover, the decision to pit Paul against Tyson raises questions about the integrity of the sport and whether the spectacle-driven nature of modern boxing is overshadowing its essence. Many argue that matchups like these prioritize entertainment and financial gains over the true spirit of competition and sportsmanship.

As the controversy continues to brew, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on Jake Paul and his decision to step into the ring with Mike Tyson. Whether this bout will be remembered as a bold move or a reckless stunt remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the criticism surrounding Paul’s choice is unlikely to fade away anytime soon.

The 35-year-old reportedly took advantage of tomorrow’s bank holiday in the Emerald Isle by fighting on the Sunday night.

However, with the boxing match unable to be watched or streamed, fans were left guessing on the result.

As it turned out, the Brixton native wasted very little time in disposing of his opponent – winning by the way of TKO in the third round.

There were reports that the Romanian injured his shoulder and had to retire.

Fans, though, did not have the foggiest of what went down.

And some took to X to reveal their frustration at not being able to watch the bout, or some just didn’t even know it was on.

One fan asked: “Is he fighting?’

A second posted: “Wild it’s 2024 and this wasn’t even televised.”

A third shared: “What sort of shifty event was this? Not a peep about it…”

A fourth added: “Forgot all about Whyte.”

    Dillian Whyte is back
While a fifth wrote: “Whyte should of been challenging for world titles now not fighting a romanian journey man in a Irish pub.”

Last time out, Whyte defeated Jermaine Franklin by majority decision.

But last August he was banned after a positive drugs test before his proposed fight against Anthony Joshua.

However, the Texas Department of Licencing and Regulation reversed the ban after finding that the positive test was caused by a contaminated supplement.

Tyson Fury hints at major tactical tweak as he trains for Oleksandr Usyk fight

TYSON FURY has hinted at a tactic change for his fight with Oleksandr Usyk by giving fans a glimpse into his training.

The pair of unbeaten champions were due to collide in the heavyweight division’s first four-belt unification bout on February 17.

But just two weeks before the Saudi showdown, the Gypsy King suffered a horror cut in sparring that forced the bout to be rescheduled to May 18.

Now Fury – who watched Manchester United beat Liverpool at Old Trafford – is officially back up and running by restarting his training camp.

Fury shared a clip from his pad session with Bob Howard – who has cornered his brothers Tommy and Roman in the past.

And interestingly, he turns left and captioned the short clip: “Southpaw GK.”

Fury has often switch-hit during his career, once fighting Martin Rogan in 2012 purely as a southpaw just to prove he could do it.

The WBC champion controversially beat MMA star Francis Ngannou, 37, in his last bout in October despite being floored.

And he recently watched from ringside in Riyadh as Anthony Joshua, 34, then knocked out Ngannou in two rounds.

But Fury – set for a two-fight series with the man who twice beat AJ in Usyk – has refused to even entertain the all-Brit bout for the time being.

He told The Stomping Ground: “Me and Usyk is the biggest fight of the century, for all the belts first time it’s ever happened, six, seven belts on the line.

“He’s undefeated, I’m undefeated, and there’s nothing bigger than that. No fight’s bigger than that.
Fans say ‘there’s no way Oleksandr Usyk beats this version of Tyson Fury’ as Gypsy King trains on day one of fight camp
“I know that people are trying to get their foot in the door to try and get a fight with me but when I beat Usyk I’ll be the undisputed.

“And then I’ll fight him again and I understand that one of the belts are going to be taken of us again straight away.

“So, I’ll have two fights with Oleksandr Usyk this year. Let’s not forget, Usyk beat the other fella twice in a row.

“That puts him way down the ladder, nowhere near, you understand? So me and Usyk is the fight?”
