David Beckham admits he didn’t get his father Ted’s approval until he reached 100 England caps – despite two decades of sporting success

David Beckham has revealed he had to wait ‘over two decades’ before getting any approval from his father over his successful football career.

Chatting to James Corden on his podcast series This Life of Mine, David, 48, admitted his ambitious drive came from the desire to please his father Ted – earning a ‘you’ve made it boy’ only after he won 100 caps.

‘My dad never told me I’d done well really until my hundredth cap. That was the first time my dad turned around to me and said, ‘you’ve made it boy’.

He said he didn’t get the same recognition at any other point in his career despite six Premier League titles, two FA cups, four Community Shields and a Champions League title.

David added: ‘It was the moment that we sat at dinner after I’d won my hundredth cap in Paris and he put his arm around me, and said, ‘you made it, boy.’

The former footballer explained he and his two sisters were raised in a loving him by two ‘hard-working parents’ – but his dad always pushed him to do more during his Sunday league football team.

‘He very rarely turned around to me and said, ”well done, boy. You did well today, you played well,” he confessed.

But the Salford City co-owner admitted to be only grateful for his father’s methods, which prepared him – both mentally and physically – for the hardest challenges of his football career.

‘Stepping out onto that stadium in front of our fans, whether they loved me or hated me, I loved every minute of every game that I played in,’ David said.

But the former footballer also admitted to have gone ‘a lot softer’ with his four children Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper – as he chose not to be as tough.

During the candid chat, David also opened up about his long marriage with Victoria, 49, revealing it has only strengthen over the years.

‘We actually like each other,’ he said bluntly and admitted they now enjoy dinners, even in silence.

David has also admitted he didn’t realise how ‘strong’ his wife Victoria was until they got married.

The football legend tied the knot with the singer-turned-fashion designer in 1999 after two years of dating.

He revealed that he ‘really fancied’ her at the time, even though he ‘didn’t know’ who she really was until their relationship progressed.

Speaking on SiriusXM’s show, he said: ‘I really just fancied her. I did. I just fancied her.

‘I didn’t know what she was like as a person. I just actually fancied her like most people did at that time, and I didn’t know who I was marrying [or] who I was going to be with for the rest of my life.

‘I didn’t realise what a strong woman she was, and that is what really attracted me to her more than anything.’

While David thinks Victoria – the mother of his children is ‘beautiful’ and ‘sexy’, his heart lies with her caring side.

He admitted: ‘I like a strong woman, and I like the fact that she works hard. I like the fact that she’s a great mum.

‘I like the fact that she looks after me sometimes, most of the time, and you know, we’ve created this life with four amazing children, which are the most important things in our life, so that’s why I chose Victoria… the way that she kind of runs the family.’

The retired footballer will forever hold the Spice Girls song Say You’ll Be There in his heart because the music video first attracted him to Victoria.

He said: ‘It’s my favourite because it was the song that was on the TV when I was sat in my room with Gary Neville and it came on the telly and that was when I turned around to Gary and said, ‘I’m gonna marry that one in the short black dress.”

It comes after David spent weeks supporting his wife through Paris Fashion Week with a broken foot as she showed the world how truly strong she can be.

David was ever the gentleman as he held an umbrella to protect his wife from the rain as they stepped out in Paris earlier this month.

He helped the ex Spice Girl, as they headed for a family dinner just 24 hours after her successful show fashion week show in the city.

Despite still hobbling on crutches, after suffering an ankle injury during a recent gym work out, Victoria cut a chic figure in all black.

Following the show David couldn’t contain his pride for his wife as he took to Instagram to share his love for the fashion designer.

He gushed that he was ‘so proud’ of Victoria after she failed to let her injury or protestors spoil her big night.

David wrote: ‘So proud of you for many reasons but this season threw a lot at you and again you just did what you do best. we love you @victoriabeckham’.

Despite her ankle injury and the show being invaded by Peta protestors, she continued to enjoy her big night by her husband and children Brooklyn, Cruz, and Harper.

In a jokey snap, David gave Victoria a piggy-back while holding a bottle of champagne as Victoria thanked him for his support, while making reference to her injury.

She wrote: ‘Always supporting me (literally) I love you so much x Kisses x’.

Campbell Hatton admits he has ‘no arguments’ after boxing sensation and son of legendary fighter Ricky Hatton suffers first loss of his career to James Flint in shock result

Campbell Hatton has admitted that he has ‘no argument’ after suffering the first loss of his career.

The 23-year-old, who is the son of boxing legend Ricky Hatton, had won all 14 of his previous fights going into his bout with James Flint for the Central Area super lightweight title.

Although Hatton was widely expected to prevail, he ended up suffering a shock defeat in Sheffield, with Flint retaining his title following a unanimous points decision.

Flint won with scores of 98-92, 97-94 and 97-95 in an entertaining encounter.

Hatton stated that he will learn from the fight and says that he is eager to get back in the ring again as soon as possible.

‘I think I did enough but no arguments. I just have to learn.

‘I would love to do that again. All respect to Jimmy Joe.’

Hatton was also eager to point out that he isn’t just getting recognition in boxing because of his father.

He said: ‘I hope I showed a few people I am more than a silver spoon, I can dig in.’

Flint stressed that Campbell will be able to bounce back quickly from the defeat.

Mike Tyson sends chilling five-word warning to Jake Paul ahead of huge fight

The pair will meet in the ring in July at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas

Mike Tyson will take on Jake Paul later this year in a keenly awaited bout – and Iron Mike has sent his opponent a chilling message as he prepares for his return to the ring.

The 57-year-old has not fought professionally since 2005, but is busy preparing to end a 20-year absence from the ring when he takes on YouTuber Paul in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday July 20.

Tyson is a legendary figure in the sport, having 50 wins from 58 fights under his belt, two no contests and only six losses in a career which spanned two decades.

His last professional fight came against Kevin McBridge in 2005, but was stopped within two rounds.

Paul meanwhile is in the infancy of his professional boxing career, with the 27-year-old boasting nine wins in 10 fights so far and only one solitary defeat, which came at the hands of Tommy Fury last year.

Both men are now preparing for a blockbuster fight that has divided opinion.

While some quarters are delighted to see Tyson make his return to professional boxing, others have questioned the safety of the fight, given the huge age gap between the two men involved.

Prominent figures from combat sport have voiced their concerns about the fight, with promoter Eddie Hearn admitting he may not even watch the bout.

Ricky Hatton has not held back with his criticism of the upcoming fight, while UFC president Dana White raised the issue of the age difference between the two men, with Paul 30 years younger than Iron Mike.

Both men are busy training ahead of their July fight – and Tyson has sent Paul some chilling messages as he prepares.

Taking to Snapchat, accompanied by a picture of him drinking from a water bottle with wraps on after training, Tyson wrote: “Jake Paul, where you at?”

And in another warning message to the YouTuber, Tyson wrote: “Fighting is a sport: if you’re not humble, it’s going to bring humbleness to you.”

Whether you agree with this fight taking place or not, it is certainly one which has captured the attention and will attract viewers when it comes around in July.

Jake Paul’s girlfriend Jutta Leerdam gives her prediction for Mike Tyson fight in front of him

Paul and Leerdam both gave their honest views of the Tyson fight.

Jake Paul’s girlfriend Jutta Leerdam gave her prediction for his upcoming fight against Mike Tyson – and shared her biggest fear ahead of the bout.

Leerdam, a Dutch speed skater who won a silver medal in the 1000 metre category at the 2022 Winter Olympics, has been in a relationship with ‘The Problem Child’ since April 2023.

Since then, Paul has beaten MMA star Nate Diaz and professional boxers Andre August and Ryan Bourland to extend his professional record to 9-1.

Now, the YouTuber will take on Mike Tyson in Arlington, Texas on July 20, in what is one of the most eagerly-anticipated fights of the modern era.

Many figures from the boxing world have given their take on how proceedings will go, with numerous people backing 57-year-old heavyweight boxing legend Tyson to get the job done.

There are some, though, that believe ‘Iron Mike’ will have to knock out Paul early in order to win – with Paul’s age advantage perhaps giving him favourable odds as the fight wears on.

Now, Paul’s girlfriend has had her say on the fight during a guest appearance on the ‘BS with Jake Paul’ podcast, while sitting alongside her partner.

And while Leerdam predicts Paul will win the fight, she gave a brutal verdict on her biggest fear ahead of July 20.

She said: “I think you’re going to win. But he’s the most scary. For me, if I look at him, he’s just scary, he’s super strong.

“He’s a little bit older now, but if you’re still able to do that, your body remembers that. You’ve got that power forever.

“Also, one thing about Jake, he’s been doing this for five years. I think that is worse than being almost 60 and having your whole life… like you’re used to that power, you’ve trained so much that your body will remember that. He [Tyson] has had so many years of training.

“Jake didn’t even train five years ago. He didn’t do anything – he was just partying. That’s not even comparable.

“He is 57, he’s strong, his body just remembers how to fight. Jake’s only been doing this for a few years.

“If someone started a few years ago with speed skating, they couldn’t participate in a world championship [by now] – that’s not even possible. What Jake is doing is already crazy.”

Later in the podcast, when the pair were shown Tyson’s training footage, Leerdam asked: “What if he knocks you out? That would not be good.”

Paul replied: “Woah! Just look away… just look away.”

Tyson vs Paul takes place at the AT&T Arena in Arlington, Texas, on July 20.

Top 10 greatest boxers of all time ranked by AI with Mike Tyson given surprising position

The top 10 greatest boxers of all time have been ranked by AI with Mike Tyson having been given a surprising position.

The top 10 greatest boxers of all time have been ranked by artificial intelligence (AI) with Mike Tyson having been given a surprising position.

Whether you’re a doctor, lawyer or a humble SPORTbible reporter, AI is beginning to have a major impact on our jobs.

While some may consider it to represent an existential threat to long-standing professions, it also can be a very useful tool in identifying illnesses, speeding up administrative work and apparently, determining who the greatest boxer of all time is.

We asked ChatGPT who the greatest ever boxers were across all weight classes and the answer was somewhat surprising.

Coming in at number 10 is Mike Tyson, who was once the youngest heavyweight champion of all time and the first heavyweight to simultaneously hold the WBA, WBC and IBF titles in 1987. The AI noted that Iron Mike’s “meteoric rise” and “immense power and ferocity in the ring” captivated the world while alluding to the legal and professional “challenges” later in his career.

Number nine is Rocky Marciano, a heavyweight who retired undefeated with a perfect record of 49-0. ChatGPT noted Marciano’s “relentless fighting style” and “knockout power”.

The first African American heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson, is in the eighth spot. The AI cited his pioneering dominance in the sport in the early 20th century and “exceptional defensive skills”.

Floyd Mayweather Jr is in seventh, having gone undefeated in his entire boxing career. The 47-year-old’s “defensive mastery, counter-punching ability, and business acumen” have all made him among the best fighters of all time, according to the AI.

Roberto Duran, who was nicknamed “Hands of Stone,” is in sixth. The AI credited Duran for his “aggressive style and remarkable endurance” while holding titles in multiple weight classes.

Sugar Ray Leonard was ranked the fifth greatest boxer of all time, having won world titles in multiple weight divisions and “engaged in memorable bouts” against Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler and the aforementioned Duran.

Fourth place is Henry Armstrong who is the only fighter to have simultaneously held world titles in three different weight classes (featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight).

Joe Louis is third on the list, having held the heavyweight title for a record 12 years and defended it successfully on 25 occasions. Louis has been credited by the AI for his “devastating punching power and technical skill”.

In second place is Sugar Ray Robinson, who the AI notes is “widely regarded as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer ever”. Robinson earned him world titles in multiple weight classes and racked up an exceptional record of 173 wins with 108 knockouts.

But, as expected, Muhammad Ali, who is literally known as “The Greatest” is considered the best fighter of all time by the AI.

Ali’s “skill, charisma, and cultural impact” are all credited for transcending boxing, while he, of course, won the heavyweight title on three occasions.

  • Mike Tyson explains how ‘psychedelic toad’ convinced him to make boxing return

Mike Tyson explains how ‘psychedelic toad’ convinced him to make boxing return

“I don’t know what happened, I just said I’m going to do this.”

Mike Tyson claims the psychedelic ‘Toad Venom’ drug is what made him return to boxing as a 54-year-old.

The former heavyweight champion stepped into the ring for the first time in 15 years in November 2020 to face Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition bout.

His last fight before that was a losing effort to journeyman Kevin McBride in 2005 and his return came as a surprise to many.

The contest itself ended in a draw and Tyson discussed it during an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast.

Tyson explained: “I did this toad, this DMT stuff and I lost the weight. I don’t know what happened, I just said I’m going to do this.

“I did this toad and I said, you’ve got to do this… you have to do that [and] I lost the weight.”

‘Toad Venom’ is extracted from a rare species of toad native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona.

It’s said the drug, which is smoked, can cause a ‘religious-like trip’ that lasts for up to an hour in some cases.

‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ went on to discuss more elements of his comeback, even detailing who his original opponent was meant to be.

    Image

Bob Sapp was lined up to take on ‘Iron Mike’ before Jones Jr got involved, which then saw former foe Evander Holyfield chirp up.

Tyson continued: “It started with me fighting Bob Sapp, that was going to be the first fight.

“The fight with Roy Jones was supposed to be with Bob Sapp.

“Roy Jones got involved, other fighters got involved, [Evander] Holyfield got involved and it turned into a fiasco.

“Jake Paul got involved and that was the birth of Jake Paul.”

Tyson seemed keen to continue his fighting career after the Jones Jr fight and it performed well on pay-per-view, proving he still had it as a draw.

At the time, Jake Paul was vocal in his demands for a fight with Tyson.

Tyson joked he’d want $1 billion to face the YouTuber and stressed he’d heard nothing about a potential fight.

Mike Tyson is set to earn a massive purse for his fight against Jake Paul, according to a UFC legend.

Mike Tyson is set to earn a whopping purse for his huge fight against Jake Paul.

Tyson will return to action for the first time since November 2020 when he takes on Paul.

His fight against the 27-year-old is set for July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which will be aired on Netflix.

The 57-year-old sent a chilling message to his opponent ahead of their summer showdown.

His coach has also revealed how the former world heavyweight champion will approach his clash with ‘The Problem Child’.

And, according to UFC legend Henry Cejudo, Tyson will pocket a cool $20 million.

Cejudo, who dropped a decision to Merab Dvalishvili at last month’s UFC 298, made the claim on his podcast with Kamaru Usman.

“I mean, you know what I respect, Uncle Mike… But it obviously takes two to tango,” he said.

“I feel like there is probably a really good payday for Mike. He’s probably going to wind up making close to about 20 mil, and he’s about to turn 58 years old.”

Tyson made a reported $10 million for his exhibition bout against fellow boxing legend Roy Jones Jr.

He’s set to earn double that amount for his fight against Paul.

Cejudo isn’t the only former UFC champion to have his say on ‘Iron’ Mike returning to the ring.

Former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier believes Paul is in a ‘no-win situation’ against Tyson.

“It might ruin you if he just beats on Mike Tyson. He’s in a no-win situation,” he explained.

“I don’t know that he thought this one through as much as he probably should have been, because if you just go out there and you just beat the sh*t outta Mike Tyson. Everybody’s gonna be really mad at you. I mean, really mad.”

Paul, 27, announced he will take on former unified heavyweight champion Tyson, 58, in Texas on July 20.

Tyson will be lacing up his gloves for the first time since an exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr in 2020, while he has not competed professionally since 2005.

Meanwhile, YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul will be competing in his 11th career fight, having so far notched a record of nine wins, including six knockouts as well as one defeat, which came against heavyweight Tommy Fury.

While much has been made of Tyson’s age, with the boxing legend set to be 31 years Paul’s senior at the time of the fight, former undisputed champion Lewis has shared how he thinks the contest will play out.

Thor Bjornsson Has Been Studying Lennox Lewis Ahead Of Eddie Hall Fight
Hafthor ‘Thor’ Bjornsson has revealed that he has been studying heavyweight great Lennox Lewis as part of his preparations to face Eddie Hall.

In an intriguing social media post, Lewis shared a simulation of the fight, alongside the caption: “So I hear Mike Tyson will be fighting Jake Paul. Not quite sure how that will go but it could be something like this.”

In the clip, Paul and Tyson come face-to-face in the octagon in the UFC 5 video game.

Tyson comes flying out of the traps by landing a booming right hand which sends Paul crashing to the canvas with his very first punch.

Within seconds, Paul collapses on the canvas while Tyson has his hand raised in victory.

While that scenario seems highly unlikely, the likes of Joe Rogan have insisted Tyson still has the tools to dismantle Paul.

Rogan said on his eponymous podcast: “I don’t give a f**k if he’s 55, that’s still Mike Tyson. He trains with Rafael Cordeiro, who’s a legend in MMA. He runs Kings Mixed Martial Arts. Rafael is a world-renowned trainer. When you see him holding the mits for Tyson and Tyson is smashing the mits. Jesus! That guy can still f*** you up.

“In this world with hormone replacement and vitamins. He does all this electrical muscle stimulation recovery stuff.

“When they were training Mike for that Roy Jones fight they were using state-of-the-art science. I don’t give a f*** if he’s 55 years old that guy will hurt you. If Jake Paul’s on the other side of the ring and he sees Mike Tyson bobbing and weaving he’s going to have a recognition.

“He’s going to look over and go, ‘Oh my God, that’s really Mike Tyson.’”

Bookies name clear favourite for Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight after new training footage

Mike Tyson will fight Jake Paul in a boxing match in Arlington, Texas on July 20.

Jake Paul and Mike Tyson are preparing to meet in the ring this summer and a clear favourite has already emerged with the bookies for the controversial boxing match.

Tyson, 57, will return to the ring to face Paul, 27, on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in what will be the main event of a card that will air on Netflix.

Former undisputed heavyweight world champion Tyson has not fought since drawing with Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition match in 2020, while his last professional bout came back in 2005 against Kevin McBridge – when he was stopped in two rounds before hanging up the gloves.

His decision to return to the ring has caused major controversy, with numerous high-profile figures from the world of boxing questioning his decision to return while also criticising Paul for taking a fight against the much older man.

Undeterred, Tyson has posted several clips on social media of himself training for the fight, in which he looks in peak physical condition for a man of his age.

YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul is yet to publish footage of himself in preparation for the fight, having recently extended his professional record to 9-1 with a first-round victory over Ryan Bourland in Puerto Rico on March 2.

Despite that relative lack of training in recent weeks, the bookmakers have seemingly decided that Paul is likely to win the fight.

The ‘Problem Child’ is currently 5/6 favourite to win the fight, with Tyson the slight underdog at 6/4 according to odds provided by OddsChecker.

It is yet to be confirmed if the fight will be fully professional, a non-judged fight with pro rules or an exhibition bout.

It had been claimed that the two men could face each other with 18oz gloves and head-guards.

However, MMA journalist Ariel Helwani has since debunked that theory.

Speaking on a recent episode of The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, he said: “Is it pro or is it exhibition? They want pro, but that’s up to the Texas commission, we’ll have to wait and see. Weight? I’m told heavyweight. Rounds? I’m working on that as well.

“I saw an interview with Derek Chisora where he said there would be headgear. I was told there’s absolutely no headgear involved.

“This is going to look like your typical boxing match. It’s just like, an exhibition like Mike’s last fight was against Roy Jones in November 2020? Or is it just going to be a normal, pro-heavyweight fight that has no strings attached in that regard?”

Tyson Fury has his say on Mike Tyson fighting Jake Paul.

Tyson Fury held nothing back as he gave a shock prediction for Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul.

Tyson is set to face Paul at AT&T Stadium on July 20 in a bout that will be aired on Netflix.

It will be the boxing legend’s first appearance since his exhibition against Roy Jones Jr back in November 2020.

As for Paul, he makes a swift return to the ring, having recorded a big win over Ryan Bourland earlier this month.

The match-up pitting Tyson against Paul has been widely condemned by fans and critics alike in the combat sports world.

UFC boss Dana White pulled no punches as he shared his honest thoughts on ‘Iron’ Mike coming back.

Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland destroyed Paul for facing Tyson in an astonishing rant.

Joe Rogan, however, has backed Tyson to beat Paul.

And Fury has echoed the same sentiment, giving a shock prediction.

The self-proclaimed ‘Gypsy King’ has supported Tyson returning to the sport and calls his against Paul an ‘even match’.

Speaking to The Stomping Ground, he said: “I think it’s fantastic for boxing.

“You’ve got a legend in Mike Tyson. You’ve got a YouTube boxer [Jake Paul]. He has come into the game and blew it up and he’s got millions of followers and millions of views and millions of eyes. Good, bad or indifferent. Some people love him, some people hate him.

“So, I think it’s a really good spectacle for boxing. Brings a lot of people to the game.”

Fury added: “Listen, who am I to say, ‘Oh, Mike Tyson shouldn’t be boxing or Jake Paul shouldn’t be boxing’, good luck to ’em. They’re both gonna make what I call a sh*t ton of money out of it. So, isn’t that what it’s about?

“[They’re fighting at] a great stadium,” Fury referenced AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

“It’d be fantastic for the guys both getting paid, both gonna put on a show. I just don’t know what’s not to like. Oh, okay, [Tyson’s] 57 years old, but he’s a former undisputed world heavyweight king, and [Paul] plays computers for a living and he’s come to boxing about a year ago. So, pretty even match.

“From being a kid on the Disney Channel to fighting Mike Tyson. Who wouldn’t want to do that?… People say, ‘Oh, it’s sh*t’, this, that and the other.

“But, I bet they still watch it. Who’s not intrigued?”
