Radical plan to transform Brookvale Oval into a UFC arena with a roof that will still be able to host NRL matches

The iconic Brookvale Oval on Sydney’s northern beaches could be set for a dramatic tranformation, with talks to open next month of turning the run-down NRL venue into an enclosed arena capable of hosting UFC events.

The venue is owned by Northern Beaches Council and is primarily used by the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles NRL side under the commercial name of 4 Pines Park.

Manly was one of four NRL sides to travel to Las Vegas to kick off the 2024 season where they trained at the freshly built UFC Performance Institute that is a global resource for current and aspiring fighters.

It was there that talks commenced about turning Brookvale Oval into a hybrid venue including a roof that is capable of hosting 25000-30000 fans to watch UFC events, NRL, rugby and soccer matches.

The UFC’s vice president, Australia and New Zealand Peter Kloczko told News Corp that a formal meeting with Sea Eagles would take place after preliminary discussions were already held with owner Scott Penn and chief executive Tony Mestrov.

‘We are building a solid partnership with the NRL in terms of all the things we did in Vegas,’ Kloczko said.

‘This could be one of them. The UFC has a mandate at the moment to look at opportunities for establishing and developing UFC performance institutes around the world.

‘Currently there are three – one in Vegas, one in China and one in Mexico City.

‘The one in China we actually have a partnership with the Chinese Olympic Committee, so athletes of all disciplines of their Olympic program go through the UFC performance institute and use it as a high performance centre.

‘I think it is important for us to develop as a business here and we have a local physical presence and that could be having a UFC performance institute here in Australia.

‘We are looking at those different options to see how we can play a role. The chat with Tony and Scott was basically around that – not only for a UFC performance institute but how can we collaborate on hosting bigger and better UFC events in Sydney as part of that.’

The proposed arena would include a UFC Performance Institute like the one in Las Vegas where the Sea Eagles trained ahead of their NRL season opener in the United States

The plan would allow the UFC to bring more marquee events to Australia with major events held at the northern beaches venue.

‘With a stadium and a roof, we can bring blockbuster fights to Sydney,’ Kloczko said.

‘It gives us greater possibilities and options. We have a great relationship with the NSW government in terms of bringing UFC events to Sydney.

‘A stadium with a roof gives us more certainty and ability to bring bigger fights. I will be meeting the guys over at Manly in a couple of weeks time.

‘We will put our head together and see what can be done. Obviously something like this takes a lot of investment and a lot of collaboration. We will see what we can dig up.’

Mestrov told News Corp he was excited to see how the meetings would progress.

‘We are exploring opportunities with the UFC,’ Mestrov said.

‘They are a worldwide company that are interested in discussing an opportunity with us and who wouldn’t want to have a discussion with the UFC?

‘We’re going to explore the opportunity which includes the UFC being stationed here at 4 Pines Park.’

Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua’s fight date and location revealed by promoter Frank Warren… and why they will fight TWICE after the Gypsy King’s undisputed title bout

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua will likely meet in Saudi Arabia next March, Frank Warren has revealed.

The Queensberry promoter believes Fury and Oleksandr Usyk will fight twice this year, leaving Joshua waiting until 2025.

He thinks the finances involved in Usyk and Fury’s undisputed title bout on May 18 – a reported £100million for the victor – means the loser will trigger a rematch.

‘Next March, if Tyson does what I believe he’ll do and AJ continues to win, I’m sure that’ll set up a big fight,’ Warren told Sky Sports.

‘It’s like going back to the late 60s, 70s, that’s what’s happening now. These guys are all fighting each other.’

Warren revealed that AJ and Fury could fight in Saudi Arabia after two fights between the Gypsy King and Oleksandr Usyk

Fury and Joshua could meet twice. Eddie Hearn revealed earlier this week that they could sign a two-fight deal, with one of the bouts taking place at Wembley Stadium.

Warren believes they will have to clash at least once in the Middle East for financial reasons.

He said: ‘I’ve got to be honest, I think that is where it will go. Of course, I’d like them in the UK.

‘I look back when I was younger – all those many, many, many years ago – I look at all those really great fighters like Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, where did they put their big fight on?

‘The Rumble in the Jungle [in what was then Zaire]. Where did George Foreman fight Frazier? In Jamaica. The Thriller in Manila. That’s what happens. Because they went where the money is.

‘Those fights I mentioned took place in places you’d never dream of boxing taking place.

‘Traditionally it would have either gone to New York, then it became Las Vegas with the casinos.

‘They’re professional sportsmen. And boxers, unlike most sportsmen their career is very limited. One on your block and it can be all over. So you’ve got to make hay while the sun shines.’

Joshua needs to fill his time and find somebody to fight before Fury.

After beating Francis Ngannou, some possible option are Filip Hrgovic, Deontay Wilder, and Joseph Parker.

Dalton Smith spent years looking up to Kell Brook but claims he’s ready to bypass his ‘role model’ and insists beating Jose Zepeda will land him in the ‘biggest battles on the biggest stages’

Dalton Smith’s journey in boxing has drawn inspiration from the illustrious career of Kell Brook, a fellow Sheffield native and a boxing legend in his own right.

Growing up in the same city as Brook, Smith was captivated by his achievements and looked up to the former IBF world welterweight champion as a role model, aspiring to follow in his footsteps and make a name for himself in the sport.

Speaking exclusively to Mail Sport, Dalton said: ‘Over the years I saw the big names come through from Sheffield. Kell Brook was more my generation. It was Bramall Lane for him, seeing him sell that out was inspiring.

‘That’s where I want to get to, that’s what I want to achieve. So, of course, Kell has been that role model for me to look up to and achieve what he’s done. Sheffield is my hometown, it means a lot to me and there have been some great fighters to come from here. I want to be one of those big names that comes through there.’

Inspired by Brook’s career, Smith says he’s driven by a dual ambition— to engage in thrilling battles on the grandest stages and to etch his name alongside the sport’s most revered champions.

Growing up in the same city as Brook, Smith was captivated by his achievements and looked up to the former IBF world welterweight champion as a role model

Like Brook, Smith understands the importance of competing in big fights that capture the imagination of fans worldwide, but claims he’s also focused on honoring the traditions of the sport and paying homage to those who came before him.

Whether it’s the WBC, WBA, IBF, or WBO title, he believes each belt represents a pinnacle of achievement, a symbol of excellence that serves as a testament to years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication.

Dalton said: ‘For me, being young, I have seen the greats like Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton come through and do the traditional route. The English, British, European, Commonwealth and then world title.

‘I’ve always said I want to look back on my career and look at my trophy cabinet and have all those belts that have been around for many years. I don’t want all these Mickey Mouse belts that are new into boxing. I want to look back through the history of boxing and think right I won one of those. The two I need to get now are a European and a world.

‘That being said, of course the belts are nice. But, they do only collect dust. People always remember you from the fights you were in. So, I want to be in the big fights people remember. As you said, the grudge matches, the fights people want to see.

‘Whenever there are big fights throughout my career, that people want to see, they are the ones I want to be chasing. It’s great to get all the belts and as I said, I want to get all the real belts in boxing, but of course, it’s about what you finish boxing with.

‘What’s in the bank account, what financially sets you up for after your career. What does that is the biggest fights. The biggest names. So, that’s what I will always chase.’

Dalton believes he is ready to take the next step on his journey and says his fight against Jose Zepeda on March 23 represents a significant moment in his career that will propel him forwards.

For Smith, this fight presents an opportunity to prove himself against top-tier competition and solidify his status as a rising star in the world of boxing.

With an undefeated record and an impressive resume of victories under his belt, Smith enters the ring with confidence and determination, ready to showcase his skills against a formidable opponent.

‘I definitely have to go in there and put on a performance to prove to people I belong at the top level. I was the one who picked this fight. I believe it’s a fight that I can go in there and put on a great performance.

‘I believe it will move me up the rankings and move me onto world title eliminators and bigger fights. But, like you said, it’s one fight at a time. I have to put on a good performance here. I have to prove to people I belong with the big names in the 140 division.’

He went on to add: ‘It’s definitely a step-up for me in my career. I think he’s a great opponent. I’ve always said, every time I step-up, my game also steps up. That’s the way it goes. You have to bring something new to the table to move through the ranks.

‘Stepping up also gives you that extra fire in your belly. It gives you that little bit more to push in training. It brings the best out of you. So, yeah it definitely gives you that hunger to push on.’

On the other side of the ring stands Zepeda, a seasoned veteran with years of experience in the sport. Known for his technical prowess and relentless pressure, Zepeda poses a formidable challenge for Smith. But, will he overlook the 27-year-old?

‘I hope he is overlooking me, Smith laughed. ‘But, he’s obviously going to watch my fights and he’s going to know I am good. He’s been in much higher profile fights than this but when the bell goes he will find out he’s in the ring with one of the best fighters he’s faced. We’ll see but I hope he does underestimate me.’

In the lead-up to the fight, both Smith and Zepeda have been hard at work in the gym, fine-tuning their game plans for the Sheffield showdown.

But, Dalton could have the upper hand going into the fight after spending time training alongside one of Zepeda’s coaches, Manny Robles, during his trip to American late last year.

When asked about the time he spent with Robels, Smith said: ‘When this this fight got made with Jose Zepeda, I didn’t realise he was trained by Manny Robles. So, it was pretty funny to be fair.

‘I spent some time with Manny and Manny is a really good guy. It was a coincidence but when the fight was made we realised Manny was part of his camp so there was nothing set up there but it’s just the way it turned out.

‘It will be nice to see Manny on fight week, but on different sides of the teams this time. I’ll definitely go over and say hi to Manny before fight night. He’s a good guy and looked after me in America.

‘We actually went to Guadlahara as well for the Canelo fight so we’re spent a good amount of time together. He’s a really good guy and they’ve got a really good team there. But, fight week is obviously business.’

Smith and Zepeda will be going toe-to-toe in Smith’s backyard, headlining the March 23 card in Sheffield.

Fighting in Sheffield holds a deeply personal significance for Smith, as it’s where his journey in boxing began, where he first laced up his gloves and stepped into the ring under the watchful eye of his father and coach, Grant Smith.

When asked about being the new golden boy of Sheffield, Smith said: ‘It comes with pressure but I wouldn’t have it any other way. This is where I want to get to. I tend to not put too much pressure on myself.

‘At the end of the day, I want to achieve great things and I am cherishing all of these great moments. I am headlining my home town. People are coming out in big numbers, it’s amazing.

‘At the end of the day, it’s the entertainment business. People are paying to come out and watch me fight. They are showing great support so it’s my job to go in there and put on a great fight, a great performance and show the fans what I am capable of. I want show them why they should come back for more.’

Footage emerges of 6ft 10ins Lakers star Anthony Davis SPARRING undefeated boxer Jalen Walker… as 5ft 8in ‘Sky Walker’ prepares for April 13 bout against Alejandro Guerrero

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis took time off the basketball court and stepped into the boxing ring with Jalen Walker.

In a clip from June 2023 that was reposted by Walker and Top Rank on Saturday, the Lakers big man was sparring with the undefeated boxer.

Wearing the Lakers’ purple and gold with a grey sweater, Davis laughed in his corner before trailing the much smaller Walker around the ring. In the short montage, Davis seemingly struggled to land a punch despite his far superior reach.

The 5-foot-8 Walker did not throw punches but danced around the 6-foot-10 hoops star while wearing his headgear.

Skywalker is gearing up to face Alejandro Guerrero on April 13. Walker has won four straight since his Angel Contreras in April 2021.

Muay Thai fighter suffers HORRIFIC injury as his nose is spread across his face by uppercut… leaving fans in shock and ‘wishing they hadn’t seen’ the blow

A Muay Thai fighter suffered a gruesome nose injury in a fight at the weekend.

Shayan Heydari was lining up in a bout against Por Tor Thor Petchrungruang but disaster stuck midway through the second round.

As Heydari looked to defend himself, Petchrungruang caught him with a huge uppercut which completely displaced Heydari’s nose from its usual position.

However, the horrific injury somehow didn’t knock the Iranian out as he shielded a continued onslaught of punches from his opponent before sinking to his knees.

Heydari then received urgent medical treatment before Petchrungruang was declared the winner of the bout by virtue of a technical knockout.

Tyson Fury shares a glimpse of his unappetising chicken, rice and salad lunch, as his nutritionist reveals details of the diet which has helped him to his remarkable body transformation

Tyson Fury has offered fans an insight into his nutrition as the heavyweight boxer continues his preparations for his undisputed fight with Oleksandr Usyk.

The Gypsy King has earned praise from his supporters in recent weeks for his physical conditioning ahead of his bout with the Ukrainian on May 18.

Fury shared a photo of his lunch on social media, revealing a basic meal of chicken, rice and salad.

While the meal might look unappetising to fans, it has formed part of a daily diet plan overseen by his nutritionist Greg Marriott.

Marriott told Men’s Health earlier this month that Fury is consuming 3,000 calories on rest days, as well as between 4,500 to 6,000 on training days.

The diet has been aimed at providing the Gypsy King with enough fuel for his training sessions while aiming to manage his weight.

Marriott revealed that Fury is eating up to six meals a day under his diet plan, whereas he had previously had one or two meals a day.

Meals reportedly include Fury having two slices of sourdough toast, avocado butter spread with fresh garlic tabasco and black pepper for breakfast, as well as fresh plum tomatoes and lean beef mince sausages.

Oatmeal and protein with fresh nuts and chia seeds, and omelettes have also been included as breakfasts.

A dinner under the diet plan included a 400 gram filet steak with Dijon mustard, as well as roasted vegetables including broccoli, asparagus and beetroot.

Marriott has shared several meals eaten by Fury on social media, with fans having also praised the look of the food produced by the nutritionist.

He claimed that while Fury is in ‘amazing’ shape now, the unbeaten heavyweight will shed further weight ahead of his fight with Usyk.

‘I can promise you, you’re gonna see a different Tyson Fury,’ Marriott told Men’s Health.

‘Whatever I tell Tyson to do, he just adheres to it. He puts 100 per cent trust in me.

‘So for Tyson really, there is no challenges because he knows he’ll be in peak condition. He’s been there, done it and got the t-shirts.

‘I think for this fight, he just thought “I just want to get back to looking great”, and with that comes feeling great too, and being able to do the rounds.

‘He’s happier knowing that he’s already in amazing shape now. He doesn’t have to think about getting weight off anymore. We’ve already done that. I’ve already got him the weight off.

‘You’re gunna see another 50% on top of where he is now.’

Fury had received criticism for his conditioning after he scraped through his fight with Francis Ngannou last year, winning via split decision after being knocked down.

In an exclusive chat with Mail Sport last year, Fury said: ‘I would love to have a good body. But, I don’t have any hope of having a good body.

‘I am fat now, I was fat as a baby and I will be fat on my death bed. We’re all fat. Hughie is fat, Shane’s fat, my dad’s fat and even my mum’s fat. I hope she’s not watching this. But, we’re a fat family.’

The heavyweight world will seek to elect a unified champion for the first time in 24 years on May 18, with a reported £100million purse up for grabs.

Usyk will bring the WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO titles while Fury holds the WBC heavyweight crown – and there will be a new ‘undisupted’ belt up for grabs.

They will meet in the ring as part of Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia to crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era.

Fury has been chomping at the bit since the fight was postponed from its original date of February 17 after he suffered a nasty cut above his eye in training.

He has 34 wins – 24 via knockouts – and one draw on his ledger.

Meanwhile, Usyk has a perfect record of 21 wins and no defeats with 14 knockouts.

Carlos Sainz puts appendix surgery behind him to WIN the Australian Grand Prix in a race dominated by retirements for Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton suffered an engine blowout to end his Australian Grand Prix – in a race won by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz after Max Verstappen‘s hopes of a 10th successive victory went up in smoke.

George Russell caused late drama when he lost it on the last lap, his car smashing the barrier and spinning round as his Mercedes flipped on to its side.

‘I am OK,’ said the Briton.

Nobody could have foretold Verstappen’s misfortune of the brake failure that struck at the start of the 58-lap event.

He started on pole, but was passed by Sainz, who used his DRS power to seize control of the afternoon 16 days after undergoing appendix surgery. What a star.

Ring the church bells! For Verstappen was reporting he had lost his car. Then smoke came out of the back rear of his usually impregnable machine.

He retired at the end of the fourth lap, flames now coming from his stricken machine as he pulled into his pit box.

He got out disgruntled, obviously. But he can afford to write off his problem as a likely blip, even if the cheers of the record 132,105 crowd can hardly have warmed him. They were just delighted to see a period of domination like no other in the history of the sport interrupted.

He was furious to be held in the car while his mechanics attempted a pit stop despite him sitting in the midst of a fire.

He remonstrated with performance director Tom Hart in the garage about this point, seemingly saying: ‘F***ing stupid.’

Verstappen visited the pit wall to give his view. All disappointingly cordial at a team that has mastered warring these last few months.

He changed into his civvies and said: ‘The brake stuck from when the lights went off. The temperatures kept on increasing until the point where it caught on fire.

‘Having one brake caliper on is like driving with the handbrake on. I didn’t know at the time but I could feel the balance in the car was off.’

Of the setback he said: ‘It excites me in a way. I would like to win and we have had many good races in a row and reliability and I knew the day would come where we would retire and unfortunately that day was today.’

Of the crowd cheering, he said: ‘I have a helmet on so I don’t hear that.’

Of the 10 wins in a row that he nearly achieved, the Dutchman added: ‘I’m not interested in records. I just want to win. If it is 11 in a row or it isn’t, it doesn’t matter. The championship is the most important thing.

Lewis Hamilton, however, is enduring the worst star of his 18-season career: seventh, ninth and DNF. Even in 2009, a poor year, he went: disqualified, seventh and sixth – slightly better.

His Mercedes is short of pace and now unreliable. Russell nearly finished seventh before his final-lap crash, hardly great and nothing like a race with the Ferraris to took a one-two with Charles Leclerc second and Lando Norris third for McLaren.

Hamilton is out of sorts, his car a nightmare still after three seasons of non-development. Every change they have sought to bring have been utterly fruitless.

Brooklyn Peltz Beckham has no problem wearing his love for his wife on his skin.

The heavily tattooed 23-year-old has dozens of tattoos dedicated to wife Nicola Peltz Beckham, whom he married in April in Palm Beach, Fla. In fact, Brooklyn told USA Today on Thursday that of his 100 tattoos, about 70 of them are for Nicola.

“She always cries when I get her another tattoo,” he said at Variety‘s Power of Young Hollywood event at NeueHouse Hollywood. “I always love to surprise her with new ink.”

Brooklyn’s tattoos for Nicola include the word “married,” which he revealed in early August. “I kind of was just like, ‘Oh, we’re married, why not?’ ” Beckham said of the inspiration for the ink. “It wasn’t a thing I thought about for months. I got married five months ago, why not?”

“Surprised my baby,” Brooklyn wrote with the photo on his Instagram Story, tagging Nicola, 27, as well as celebrity tattoo artist Dr. Woo.

He previously commemorated their big day by tattooing his wedding vows on his body. The vows read, in part, “Nicola when you walked down the aisle you took my breath away you look so beautiful tonight and always.”

It goes on to read, “Let me start by saying that words cannot even describe my love for you just looking at you I see my future and it feels like a dream. You are my world and I continue to fall more in love with you every single day.”

Brooklyn, whose romance with his now-wife began in late 2019, started tattooing his tributes to Nicola years ago, though, on route to the 70 he has now. In 2020, fans first spotted the tattoo on the back of Brooklyn’s neck that bore a striking resemblance to Nicola’s eyes.

His love extends beyond just Nicola, though, and reaches her whole family. Brooklyn tattooed her late grandmother’s name on his arm in 2021. In honor of Nicola’s 26th birthday, Brooklyn inked “Gina” on his body for her beloved grandmother.

Nicola shared a photo of her beau’s freshly tatted arm on her Instagram Story, writing, “best birthday gift” with a watering eyes emoji.

Alongside his sweet ink, he wished his future wife a happy birthday on Instagram, writing, “You make me a better man and the happiest man in the world x I am so lucky to be able to spend the rest of my life with you and create so many memories. I hope you have the most amazing day because you deserve it xx love you baby ❤️❤️,” he added.

While Nicola hasn’t quite covered her body in as much ink as her husband, she does have his name tattooed on her back. In 2021, Nicola showed off the simple ink on her Instagram Story, which Brooklyn also shared. She has a delicate tattoo of “Brooklyn,” written in script font.

The two also continue to show their love all over Instagram, often sharing gushing messages for the other. Their love has only gotten more apparent since they tied the knot in April. When Brooklyn appeared on the cover of Variety earlier this month, he shared the photos to his Instagram. Nicola was quick to comment her love, writing, “WOW 🔥 you’re hot and I AM SO EXCITED FOR WHATS NEXT!!!”

  • Mike Tyson made 31-0 ‘scared dead man walking poop his pants’

Mike Tyson made 31-0 ‘scared dead man walking poop his pants’

Mike Tyson is the most feared heavyweight ever for a reason – one explained by way of an opponent he wiped out in seconds.

Tyson had his foe waiting to be beaten and walking to the ring defeated when he became the world’s undisputed champion.

Former two-weight world and Olympic champion Michael Spinks had no chance, no matter how he felt against Tyson in 1988.

That’s the view of Tyson’s former trainer Teddy Atlas.

Firstly, Spinks went down in 91 seconds against Tyson in an undisputed heavyweight title clash, three years after moving up from 175 pounds.

During his spell at the lower weight, the one-time super-middleweight claimed all the belts on offer. Spinks was widely recognized as one of the best light heavyweights of his generation.

In addition, back-to-back underdog wins over the great Larry Holmes cemented him as a fully-fledged top-division operator.

    Mike Tyson

But it was the Tyson fight where question marks hung over ‘Jinx’ as the then 31-0 star was bludgeoned in just over a minute and a half.

Many thought Spinks had already lost on his way to the ring as he looked petrified at what was to come. Others just thought that mentally, Spinks was spent due to the fight’s significance.

As the Convention Hall in Atlantic City held its breath, Tyson enhanced his legacy with an unbelievable performance.

The trainer that night, Kevin Rooney, had replaced Teddy Atlas a few years prior. But Atlas followed the career of Mike Tyson closely over the next two decades.

Atlas took time out during one of his recent podcasts to shield Spinks from unwarranted criticism.

“People thought [Michael Spinks] was a dead man walking. That’s the problem,” pointed out Atlas. “They dismissed everything, and I get people are people.

“They said that he was intimidated. He was scared to death and pooping his pants. In addition, he was frozen like a deer in headlights.

“He was a guy waiting to go to the guillotine. To put his head on the block and let’s get it over with.

“First of all, that’s not fair because nobody in his mind and his body could verify that – number one.

    Michael Spinks

“Number two – looking at it from the point I am, I’m the guy who has been as critical as anyone about Tyson and his shortcomings. But at the same time, I have pointed out that he’s one of the great punchers in the sport’s history and could punch with either hand.

“So I give him his due. I point out the things that I believe in my position should be pointed out when that’s what people are asking me to do.

“They’re not asking me to do a show based on being liked. It’s not about being liked. It’s not about giving your opinion on how you see the facts, eliminating everything else. So, I give him all his credit.

“Now, having said that I will say again: when you touch down with Spinks, many people dismissed the fight like the guy didn’t show up, like nobody in the ring with him (Tyson). He was like it was a hologram. He was a ghost. There was nobody there.

“That’s what everyone assumes. One guy says it, and everybody follows. They forget the guy was an Olympic gold medalist on the most outstanding Olympic Team ever in 1976.

“He’s one of the greatest unified light heavyweight champions ever.

“I am going to make a correlation here, okay? I am not trying to defend anybody. I’m not trying to attack anyone. Furthermore, I’m just trying to make a case (for Spinks),” he added.
