Conor Benn’s hopes of fighting in the UK are dealt a blow as BBBofC and UKAD win appeal against decision to lift his suspension following positive drugs test in 2022

Conor Benn‘s route back to fighting on home soil may have been dealt a blow after UK Anti-Doping and the British Boxing Board of Control won an appeal against the verdict to lift his temporary suspension.

It is believed a decision was communicated last week by the National Anti-Doping Panel, who had cleared Benn to resume boxing in this country back in July. That was challenged by the Board of Control and UKAD, with both parties confirming in August that they were planning to contest the NADP ruling.

Mail Sport understands they have been successful in that protracted process, though it is currently unclear whether the outcome of the appeal could lead to Benn’s British-based suspension being reimposed.

Likewise, it remains to be seen if this 18-month saga, which follows our revelations in October 2022 that Benn had twice tested positive for the banned substance clomifene, could ultimately be heading for the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Both the Board of Control and UKAD declined to comment. Representatives for Benn say no suspension has been ordered and he remains free to fight.

Benn, who has pointed towards accidental contamination for his positive tests, has fought twice in the US on foreign licences since those results came to light.

However, he has not appeared in a British ring since April 2022 and having given up his British licence in the wake of the furore, has been engaged in heated debate with the Board ever since.

The Board’s stance is that the 27-year-old should not be licensed to fight here until he has been cleared via a definitive explanation of how the clomifene entered his system.

Benn previously heralded the NADP ruling in July as a ‘vindication’ of his innocence, though sources around the time told Mail Sport that the hearing did not focus on an examination of the science.

Part of the argument deployed by Benn’s legal team is believed to have nosed on the right of UKAD to rule on samples collected by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

Mike Tyson ‘planning event in Times Square to promote his ‘Mike Bites’ weed gummies (which are shaped like a chewed ear) ahead of boxing return vs. Jake Paul’… nearly 30 years after infamous Evander Holyfield ‘bite fight’

Mike Tyson is now providing fans a way to experience biting Evander Holyfield’s ear – all while getting a nice high out of it.

The 57-year-old boxer is planning a promotional blitz for his ‘Mike Bites’ weed gummies that he’s rolling out via his Tyson 2.0 brand.

These ear-shaped weed gummies have already been spotted in various cannabis retailers across New York state.

And yes, they are in fact in the shape of an ear – one with a chunk of the top ripped off of it.

It’s a callback to Tyson’s infamous bout with Evander Holyfield in 1997 – and it all comes as the 57-year-old is getting set to fight Jake Paul in July.

‘Growing up in Brooklyn, I could have never imagined a time when cannabis would be legally utilized to enhance both mental and physical well-being,’ Tyson said in a statement.

‘Yet, here we are, witnessing the incredible progress.’

‘New York, we still have improvements to make in expanding access to this plant-based wellness; but together, I’m confident we will forge a new standard of excellence, prioritizing safety, quality and taste to ensure unparalleled experiences.’

The gummies are a humorous, yet crude callback to the time the former undisputed champion gnawed off a piece of Holyfield’s ear in that July 28, 1997 bout. That move got him disqualified and lost him his license to box temporarily.

According to the New York Post, not all in the cannabis industry are high on promoting Tyson’s gummies – pointing out his criminal record and a 1992 conviction for raping Miss Black America contestant Desiree Washington.

‘They’re honoring this convicted rapist and wife beater as a role model. We should use much better role models,’ said Stu Zakim, a publicist for the cannabis dispensary The Travel Agency in Union Square.

Eddie Hearn blasts Francis Ngannou’s ‘BAFFLING’ excuse for losing to Anthony Joshua… as he insists the ex-UFC fighter ‘should know better’

Eddie Hearn has slammed Francis Ngannou for appearing to suggest that his demolishing defeat by Anthony Joshua was down to his early arrival at the arena.

Joshua knocked down the former UFC heavyweight champion three times in two rounds to secure a dominant victory in Saudi Arabia.

Ngannou, in a recent interview on the MMA Hour, said that he arrived at the Kingdom Arena, in Riyadh, two hours earlier than Joshua, appearing to suggest that this was a ‘trick’ to tire him out.

Joshua’s promoter Hearn has taken exception with the comments, suggesting the 37-year-old ‘should know better’.

He told Boxing Social: ‘I was baffled. It is a bit disappointing really.

‘He said they got him to the arena (early), who is they? You get given times by the broadcaster.

‘He said that he was made to come to the arena early to tire him out for the fight, which is really an inexperienced boxing guy talking here, he should know better.

‘You get your time, which is the ideal time that the organiser or the broadcaster would like you there, you make your own mind up.

‘Some fighters like to get there three hours before, some like to get there an hour before, it all depends on the fighter.

‘If AJ is told for example that “we want you there at 10 ‘o’clock” and we know that the fight is happening at 1am, then we would come a little bit later, because he doesn’t want to be hanging around that long.’

Hearn also reacted to a social media post which contained Ngannou’s comments, stating: ‘I’m not sure he has come round yet.’

Ngannou after the fight confessed that he couldn’t remember being knocked out by Joshua and that from going back to his stool in between the first and second rounds, he ‘wasn’t there anymore‘.

In his interview on the MMA Hour, when asked if fighting late around 3am ‘screwed’ him up, he replied: ‘We both fight at 3am but what I think, something that happened is that they got me to the arena very early, like 10.30pm.

“by the way” The Rock swears AGAIN on live TV – despite WWE asking wrestlers not to – after he rubbished claims of ‘double standards’… with Cody Rhodes and CM Punk also yelling expletives

The Rock swore again on live TV despite WWE asking their wrestlers not to do so.

The Hollywood star was involved in a bloody brawl with Cody Rhodes to close out Monday night’s RAW show, effectively beating up his rival in the rain and causing him to bleed from his head and telling him: ‘This is what happens when you f*** with the final boss.’

The re-introduction of blood onto WWE TV has left fans wondering whether the PG era – having been in place since 2008 – is coming to an end, with a number of wrestlers also swearing in recent weeks.

Reports however have surfaced that WWE has in fact asked its wrestlers not to swear on TV – though that was an instruction clearly ignored on Monday.

The Rock led the way with the expletives, following both Rhodes – who branded The Rock’s desired match with Roman Reigns as a ‘w***fest’ and CM Punk – who used the word ‘s***’ – earlier in the show.

Having returned on-screen to WWE at the start of the year, The Rock, real name Dwayne Johnson, entered a feud with Rhodes and will take on his rival and Seth Rollins alongside Reigns at WrestleMania.

The original plan to pit The Rock against real-life cousin Reigns was met with stern backlash from fans, leading to WWE changing their plans and moving forward with the tag team match.

Reigns and Rhodes will then go head-to-head on the second night of the event in a match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

The Rock, who debuted in WWE in 1996, meaning he has performed in four different decades, was also added to the board of directors at TKO earlier this year following their takeover of the company in a merger with UFC.

He had previously rubbished reports that TKO had shown desire for him to set an example for WWE’s guidelines of a TV-PG product.

SEScoops.com reported that a memo had been sent to WWE stars informing them of their responsibility to adhere to PG guidelines on TV and social media.

It stated that some in the organisation felt that the fact the returning star did not have to abide by the same instructions was a double standard.

When Wrestlelamia shared a report from the Wrestling Observer News suggesting so, Johnson replied: ‘This story is complete horses**t.’

‘Networks and “standards & practices” have issues with my language, but I’d rather be real than not. I talk from the heart, shoot from the hip and try to always have fun,’ Johnson also posted on Instagram.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, the TV network FOX is able to bleep out his profanity as they are provided with a copy of his script before SmackDown begins.

As David Beckham buys Victoria a knee scooter complete with a ‘wine basket’, how she’s desperate to win the race to be fit for her 50th birthday bash… and the special meaning behind his gift

When Victoria Beckham turned 30, her husband David’s present was typically lavish: an oval-cut pink diamond ring, worth £1million.

For her 40th, he is said to have splashed out on a £50,000 diamond bracelet.

So, as she approaches her 50th birthday celebrations, you would have forgiven Posh for expecting an opulent addition to her jewellery collection.

Instead, the former Spice Girl, who on Valentine’s Day this year broke her foot after taking a tumble in the gym, received a rather different gift from her husband of 24 years.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, Victoria revealed that former England captain David had given her a £300 KneeRover ‘mobility bike’, designed to make sure she keeps pressure off her right leg, giving it the best chance to heal and be ready for April 17, when she plans to throw a big birthday bash.

Friends of the former Spice Girl say that she is thrilled with her gift, which David presented to her shortly after they arrived in Miami, where they are spending the Easter break.

A giddy Victoria wasted no time in sharing a video of David, 48, setting up the scooter with her 32 million Instagram followers.

‘Okay so David bought me a bike to try and help keep my foot, which is taking a long time to heal,’ she said. ‘So he bought me this little bike with a basket.’

‘Not any bike!’ David interrupted, adding: ‘It’s called a KneeRover.’

‘The accessories are endless,’ Victoria gushed. ‘Think how much wine I can fit in this basket.’

In another snap, where she modelled the vehicle while sporting a t-shirt, leggings, one trainer and her medical boot, she wrote: ‘The best gift my Husband ever bought me!!!’

The Beckham clan, I’m told, have found this purchase highly amusing. Showing off her wicked sense of humour, Victoria has compared herself to Benidorm character Madge Harvey – ageing star of the ITV comedy who shuffles around on a scooter.

Despite the hilarity, David – practical as ever – bought the gift in all seriousness.

Victoria’s injury at her West London home was described by her husband shortly afterwards as a ‘clean break’.

Since then, determined Victoria has refused to stop going to the gym, or cut down her workload.

In recent weeks she has been spotted limping to and from fashion shows and dinners on crutches wearing one (sometimes high-heeled!) shoe, with the other in a boot.

While friends say that she is taking her injury ‘very much in her stride’, they also say she is determined to look her best for her 50th and is now willing to do whatever it takes to arrive at her celebrations, which so far are shrouded in secrecy, with both feet in her trademark high heels.

‘Victoria loves getting dressed up for big occasions, none more so than her birthday – and that involves wearing a beautiful pair of shoes,’ said one friend.

‘The big day isn’t far away now and Victoria has been getting really frustrated because the foot is taking a while to heal,’ says a friend of the star.

‘She has her crutches which she has been seen using a lot but they are very exhausting. So David had a brainwave and decided to get her a scooter so she can move around more easily.

‘She has been saying that it won’t heal up but she won’t have a rest. You can imagine that David has been telling her to stop and give it all a break but she won’t. So he took matters into his own hands and splashed out on the scooter. Obviously he thinks it is hilarious but he also really wants Victoria’s foot to get better.’

Friends described David as a ‘sweetie’ for buying the KneeRover and added that Victoria has been doing rigorous exercises to help her foot heal.

After all, her 50th is not the only reason Victoria wants to be fighting fit.

On July 4 she and David will have been married for 25 years – and there will be endless celebrations that the former singer will want to dress up for.

As their recent social media posts show, the couple – who have endured their fair share of ups and downs in their marriage – are happier than ever. The secret? Making one another laugh, says a friend.

‘Can you imagine David buying Victoria a gift like a mobility scooter six or seven years ago, and then telling the world about it? No. Victoria is so excited about what is to come in 2024,’ says one.

All the more, I’m told, if she can step back into her stilettos.

  • Ex-F1 Driver Believes Pitting Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen Won’t Go Well for Red Bull

A huge amount of the spotlight for the 2024 F1 silly season is likely to be on Fernando Alonso as the Spaniard’s contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of this campaign. There are rumors that the 42-year-old could potentially join Red Bull and team up with three-time world champion Max Verstappen. Amid such speculations, former F1 driver Christijan Albers has explained why the two are unlikely to form a good team.

While speaking on De Telegraaf’s F1 podcast (as quoted by gpblog.com), Albers said, “This is just an ’emergency plan’ from (Christian) Horner in case Verstappen leaves. You absolutely cannot put the two side by side.”

“That won’t go well at all. Then everyone can say Alonso has calmed down, but that really won’t work out. Alonso is really not going to let himself be finished in his last year of driving F1“.

As per the ongoing reports, many believe that Alonso will end up replacing Verstappen at Red Bull. These reports claim that there is a chance that the Dutchman could leave Milton Keynes due to the ongoing turmoil within the team.

Signing Alonso in that case would be a good short-term solution for Red Bull. Otherwise, if Verstappen and Alonso team up, the team dynamics could take a hit, hence Albers’ comments. Both are world champions, and incredibly competitive, so neither will likely settle for being the number two driver for a race-winning outfit.

There are other drawbacks of signing Alonso too. While he is still competing at the top of his game at 42 years old, it isn’t clear how long he will remain in F1. Because of this, Red Bull could turn to other drivers, who could prove to be long-term options.

Red Bull may ignore Fernando Alonso to seek more long-term options

Even if Max Verstappen decides to stay put at Red Bull, it is pertinent to note that Sergio Perez’s contract is also expiring with the team at the end of the 2024 season. As a result, there is a possibility that the team may want to seek a driver who can replace the Mexican.

Assuming that Red Bull does not want to sign someone like Fernando Alonso because of the Spaniard‘s age, they could also consider signing someone like Carlos Sainz. The 29-year-old is currently in his last year with Ferrari and is looking for a new team. In fact, after this heroics in Australia last weekend, his stocks seem to have increased and Christian Horner admitted to having the Madrid-born driver in his shortlist.

Meanwhile, another driver who Red Bull could sign is Alex Albon. Since there is reportedly a civil war raging at Milton Keynes, Bild.de has reported that the team may consider signing Albon to appease the Thai owners.

The reports read, “Horner, however, would already have a successor in his sights in the event of a Verstappen loss with Alexander Albon. A Thai as world champion – the Thai majority owner would also like that“.

The 2024 silly season could prove to have a lot of exciting moves in store for fans. It all started with Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari (for 2025), and it is difficult to predict the final grid line-up for next campaign and beyond.

Ferrari’s first win of the 2024 season, thanks to Carlos Sainz’s incredible drive just two weeks after a surgery, gave the Maranello-based team a much need confidence boost. The SF-24’s performance and Red Bull’s apparent shortcomings at the Albert Park street circuit have reportedly prompted the Scuderia to prepone their scheduled Imola upgrade package for the 2024 Japanese GP.

According to Junaid Samodien (as reported on X), reputed media outlets have suggested that Ferrari have decided to bring forward their upgrades for the next race weekend in Suzuka as opposed to their scheduled introduction at the 2024 Emilia Romagna GP.

The Australian GP weekend exposed the RB20’s shortcomings with Max Verstappen complaining about excessive front graining leading to understeer throughout the weekend. What’s more, the SF-24 looks pound-for-pound, the 2nd fastest car on the grid – with the gap between themselves and Red Bull considerably smaller. It seems as though the team wants to capitalize on this momentum to bag a few more wins this season with an early spree of upgrades.

From the early readings of the pace differential between Red Bull and Ferrari, the iconic Italian team still has a long way to go before actually catching the Milton-Keynes based team. However, with the trajectory they are on currently, they have set themselves up perfectly for 2025 and beyond.

Ferrari looks on course to be beating Red Bull soon

The evolution of the SF-23, on this year’s car seems to have unlocked potential in the design philosophy of the current generation of Ferrari challengers. And with Lewis Hamilton joining the team next year, Ferrari looks like the best suited outfit to end the Red Bull dominance.

Hamilton will bring a whole host of championship-winning experience to the team in 2025. Ex-Ferrari race engineer, Rob Smedley even touted him to be the final piece of the jigsaw to complete the team’s coup and overthrow Max Verstappen and Red Bull.

Another ray of hope for Ferrari would be the impending 2026 regulation overhaul. With the budget cap restrictions strictly in place, many experts believe that Red Bull will divert their attention to 2026 before even maximizing what they could have with the 2025 car, hence, giving Ferrari the impetus to catch and pass Verstappen’s incredible run in the sport.

The 2024 Australian GP saw an incredible Max Verstappen stat come to an end. He finished in the points for 43 consecutive races before, but a DNF in Australia put a stop to that run. After careful assessment, a rear right brake’s mechanical failure turned out to be the reason behind the three-time world champion’s retirement. However, per a report from SoyMotor, the brake supplier, Brembo, has denied responsibility for the issue.

A couple of days after the race, Brembo assured that they had no direct responsibility for the DNF. They denied any anomaly in their product or in the material that they used to manufacture the same. Hence, the Italian brand claimed it had more to do with Red Bull‘s setup. Referring to the same, Christian Horner explained how things unfolded from Red Bull’s perspective. It felt very hard to Max Verstappen, who claimed it was like having a handbrake.

Suffering their first mechanical DNF in two years, Horner said the issue was a matter of understanding and moving on. Furthermore, he claimed that the team was assessing all of the damage to understand what caused the issue with the brakes. The British boss further added that the DNF hurt everyone on the team, and they are all hard at work to learn from it.

Incidentally, Verstappen’s last DNF also came in Australia two years ago due to issues with his car’s fuel pump. Then, from the 2022 Emilia Romagna GP onwards, Verstappen finished in the top 10 in 43 consecutive races.

Max Verstappen explains the cause of his early retirement in Australia

In Australia, Max Verstappen looked smooth as ever from the getaway line, building a lead over Carlos Sainz after the first few corners. However, the Spanish driver had little problem in overtaking the race leader eventually, accomplishing the move on the first try itself. Verstappen complained about an issue with his car immediately after and kept dropping in pace.

Soon, his car caught fire and he retired from the race. Appearing for media duties post the Australian GP, Verstappen spoke about the brake issues that plagued his weekend.

As quoted by the official website of F1, the Dutchman claimed that not finishing a race was not an ideal scenario. “Of course you always want to finish the races.” However, he added that F1 was a mechanical sport, and these things happen.

Hence, Verstappen believes that the most important element for his team is to move on from the DNF. Dwelling on their mistakes will do them little favor, and with 21 races still to go in the season, the team’s focus needs to be on what is yet to come.

Some fans are claiming that Mercedes’ poor performance is making Wolff stay behind. But he already announced before the season started that he won’t be attending all 24 races this campaign. With this, speculation as to who will replace him for the weekend has surfaced.

In 2023, Jerome D’Ambrosio, Mercedes’ driver development boss, took over the reins from Wolff in Suzuka. However, as reported by Soy Motor, he won’t be doing the same this time.

D’Ambrosio is reportedly one of the names on Ferrari’s radar. The Belgian former racing driver could join current Silver Arrows star Lewis Hamilton, as he moves to the Maranello-based outfit in 2025. So, it is understandable why Mercedes could choose to refrain from making him the temporary boss for the weekend.

There are other names who could take over, including James Allison, who is Wolff’s close aide. He has previously filled in for Wolff, when the Austrian boss missed the Brazilian GP in 2019. So, he has experience in managing the team, which could prove to be handy considering the pickle Mercedes find themselves in at the moment. Another person rumored to be in charge is Bradley Lord, the head of Mercedes’ Communications.

Because of Wolff’s decision to not attend the Japanese GP, Mercedes could wind up in yet another challenging situation. They’ve had a woeful start to the season and the team would have been hoping for a big comeback at the Japanese GP. However, the team’s boss being absent in the paddock could be a demotivating factor for the entire squad.

Toto Wolff believes it is fair to question his role at Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton’s power unit issue in Melbourne forced him to retire on lap 17, marking the start of Mercedes’ challenging Australian Grand Prix race. The team then looked to George Russell to add some points but things only got worse. On the last lap, Russell crashed out while trying to get past Fernando Alonso, thus ending Mercedes’ weekend with a 0 point haul.

In light of this dismal performance, when Toto Wolff was asked if he was the best person to lead the Brackley-based side, he gave a somber response. He said to Racing News 365 that his contribution to the team has to be constructive.

“We have a physics problem, not a philosophical or organizational problem,” said Wolff to Racing News 365. “We haven’t swallowed a dumb pill since 2021.”

Wolff concluded his statement by inviting people to present solutions so that the problems at Mercedes can be fixed. As things stand, they remain fourth in the championship standings- far behind Ferrari and McLaren in terms of performance.
