Mike Tyson's last opponent didn't hold back with worrying verdict on Jake Paul fight

Roy Jones Jr has had his say on Tyson vs Paul.

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr has given his verdict on the upcoming fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.

Jones Jr was Tyson’s first opponent in 15 years when the pair faced off in November 2020.

The fight took place over eight rounds and was scored by the WBC, as well as being classed as an exhibition rather than a professional bout. It ended in a draw.

Tyson’s last fight at professional level was his 2005 loss to American fighter Kevin McBride, which prompted his retirement from the sport.

Reports claim that there have been pushes made for Tyson vs Paul to take place as a professional fight, although the final decision rests with the boxing commission of Texas, the state which will host the event.

Many figures from inside and outside the world of boxing have given their prediction on how the fight, which takes place on July 20, will go down.

Jones Jr has now added his name to the list, and believes the fight is bad news for one fighter in particular.

He told The Lunch Club: “If it’s a fight, it’s very intriguing how it may turn out, because Jake Paul has gotten a lot better as a boxer over the days.

“But Mike Tyson, even at 58 or however old he is, is still Mike Tyson. When I boxed him, he still punched like Mike Tyson.

“If he hits anybody square on the chin, it’s going to be problematic, I don’t care who it is.

“I like Jake Paul, he’s a good guy, and he’s doing good with his boxing stuff. I think it’s a good promotional situation for him and Mike – they should do really good numbers, especially having upgraded to a real fight.

“If Mike comes out and does what Mike normally does, then it’s going to be a tough situation for Jake.

“If Jake can stay away from him for four or five rounds, then Jake has a chance, but he’s going to have to do a lot of manoeuvring to stay away from him.”

Earlier this week, it emerged that Tyson will have to record favourable results in a number of health-related tests before he is cleared to compete.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) told USA Sports Today that fighters over the age of 36 must submit ‘favourable results’ from an electroencephalogram (EEG) and an electrocardiogram (ECG).

An ECG can detect any heart issues, while an EEG can evaluate brain disorders.

Oleksandr Usyk makes subtle dig at Tyson Fury with choice of wardrobe after fight postponement

Oleksandr Usyk appeared to aim a dig at Tyson Fury with his choice of eyewear.

Oleksandr Usyk appeared to aim a dig at Tyson Fury with his choice of eyewear following the collapse of their undisputed clash.

Fury sustained a nasty cut above his eye in sparring which postponed their February 17, with a new date of May 18 set.

The sparring partner who inflicted the cut on Fury has given his side of the story, revealing he was insulted before the slashing strike.

Usyk shared his thoughts on the postponement of the fight and seemed to poke fun of Fury in the process.

During the rounds of media, the Ukrainian sported a pair of protective eyewear in an apparent taunt at the cut suffered by the undefeated British star.

Whilst speaking to Boxing King Media, the WBA (super), IBF and WBO champion was donning a pair of thick glasses seemingly designed to protect his eyes and the surrounding area.

“I’m not upset. I trust in God, whichever way he is leading me is the best way,” he said of the postponement.

Conspiracy theories circulated on social media after the fight was postponed, which claimed that Fury was intentionally trying to avoid Usyk.

But the notion that Fury is scared of Usyk angered Frank Warren, who hit out at the critics.

“Tyson wants [the fight]. Some of the stuff that’s been going out, I’ve never heard anything like it,” said Warren.

“Has Tyson got make-believe stitches in his eye? What they’re saying is libellous and scandalous.”

Fury has returned to Morecambe to undergo treatment on his eye, having based himself in Saudi Arabia.

“He’ll want to be with his family,” the legendary promoter added.

“He can’t continue training as such. He can tick over. He can get on the bike and keep well but when you’re training for a fight you’re training to reach your ultimate best, your peak.

“Now he has to wind down and set everything back in motion to get himself up and ready and make sure he’s at his best for 18 May.”

Carlos Sainz has massively stepped up ever since he lost his drive at Ferrari to Lewis Hamilton from 2025 onwards. At the 2024 Australian GP, the #55 driver went on to sensationally end Max Verstappen’s winning streak, days after undergoing appendicitis surgery. But with the Spaniard still without a seat for next year, his ex-McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, has claimed that the 29-year-old is probably underrated by many in the F1 paddock.

Norris was quoted by Racefans.net as saying, “When you’ve worked with him [Sainz], when you know what he’s capable of doing, and when things click, they click very well and he has performances like he does this weekend. And I would say all year, he’s proved to be a step up from maybe what he has been last year. You’re silly if you underrate him.”

Sainz lost his seat at Ferrari for 2025 after the team confirmed that they had signed seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. Soon after Hamilton’s announcement, the team revealed that the Briton would partner Charles Leclerc, making it clear that there was no room for Sainz.

Ever since the Italian outfit confirmed that they will not extend their partnership with Sainz, the Spaniard has had a point to prove. And the former Renault driver seems to have done exactly that. At the season opener in Bahrain, he finished on the podium, ahead of fourth-placed Leclerc.

Sainz then missed the Saudi Arabian GP due to his appendicitis diagnosis but came back during the very next race weekend to win the Australian GP. He once again beat Leclerc for the victory. It are performances such as these that will likely make Sainz a hot prospect on the driver market for the 2025 season and beyond.

Where is Carlos Sainz headed in 2025?

After his stunning start to the 2024 season, Carlos Sainz has turned a lot of heads in the paddock. After his Australian GP triumph, Red Bull boss Christian Horner has all but confirmed the team’s interest in re-signing the ex-Toro Rosso (now V-CARB) driver back into their stable to drive alongside Max Verstappen.

Meanwhile, the #55 driver could also be looking at a straight swap with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. The seven-time world champion’s departure leaves a huge vacancy at Brackley.

Whilst Toto Wolff himself would be looking at many options, the combination of experience and youth Sainz could bring to the team could lure the Austrian into offering him a seat. Another team that has been linked to Sainz for a while now is the incoming Audi side.

    View post on X

After recently completing a 100% takeover of Sauber, the German company would be eager to get their driver line-up sorted out. Sainz could be the perfect person to lead the team’s project to the very sharp end of the field. However, after tasting success with Ferrari, Sainz might be apprehensive about slipping back into the midfield with them.

Tyson Fury may never ‘fight again’ after postponing Oleksandr Usyk fight, claims former champion

Tyson Fury may never 'fight again' after postponing Oleksandr Usyk fight, claims former champion

Former champion George Groves has claimed Tyson Fury may never fight again after pulling out of the Oleksandr Usyk fight.

Fans may never see boxing star Tyson Fury in the ring again according to this former champion.

Fury, also known as ‘The Gypsy King’, was forced to postpone his heavyweight clash against Oleksandr Usyk which was scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia on February 17.

The 35-year-old was well underway with his preparations for the fight, before suffering a cut above the eye in sparring which has since ruled him out of the clash.

The eagerly anticipated fight has now been pencilled in for May 18 as both fighters look to unify the belts across the heavyweight division.

Fury was last in action against former UFC champion Francis Ngannou back in October, which former WBA super-middleweight champion Groves believes could’ve been his last fight after pulling out of the Usyk bout. “There are all these stories Fury’s had a terrible camp, he’s been dropped in camp, he’s out of shape, he’s past it, the Ngannou fight reflects where he’s at now,” Groves told iFL TV. “Well, what if none of that’s true?

“What if he’s had a fantastic camp, he’s had fantastic sparring? [What if] he’s high-flying, and he’s [saying], ‘Right, I’m going to show the world what I’m capable of and beat this Ukrainian guy, and get the belts,’ then two weeks out he gets cut?”

He continued: “That’s going to be even harder to get over mentally and emotionally than having a stinker of a camp and trying to turn it around in one day, so we might never see Fury fight again, who knows?”

Usyk himself has since commented on Fury’s injury, where he claimed he actually loved his opponent even ‘more’ after the setback. “Of course, more. Why? Because it’s the man who has my fourth belt. It’s the man who helped me become famous a lot,” he said.

“Because we, all people, must love friends, [people who are] not friends, acquaintances, all people. It’s great when you are polite, not dirty.”

UFC legend Nate Diaz makes crazy 'real fight' claim about Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua

Nate Diaz called out Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

UFC legend Nate Diaz has made a crazy ‘real fight’ claim about boxing superstars Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Diaz walked away from the UFC following his submission victory over fellow MMA legend Tony Ferguson as he took on Jake Paul in a boxing bout.

But he dropped a decision to ‘The Problem Child’ in his debut inside a squared circle.

However, the Stockton slugger likes his chances against WBC world heavyweight champion Fury and former title holder Joshua, claiming he’ll ‘f**k up’ the pair of British fighters in a ‘real fight’.

He made his outrageous claim while smoking a spliff in typical style.

Speaking to social media influencer Sneako, who recently got beat up by former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland in a spar, Diaz exclaimed: “I’ll f**k up Tyson Fury. I’ll f**k up Anthony Joshua. All these motherf**kers in a real fight, like, they don’t stand a chance. And then it’s like, we’ve got, everybody’s going on boxing [Floyd] Mayweather.”

The 38-year-old added: “We’re playing a little game… I don’t like being like, labeled as an ‘MMA fighter’.

    “I’m a boxer. I’m a Jiu-Jitsu guy. I’m a kickboxer. I don’t like any of the one-dimensional things by itself anyway. I like it all.”

Nate Diaz says he would f*** up Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in a “real fight” 😬

Diaz hasn’t fought since his defeat to Paul last August.

Being a free agent, he’s able to fight in any discipline or promotion.

Despite leaving the UFC, he eyed a spot on UFC 300, calling for a showdown against former foe Conor McGregor.

However, he doesn’t think he’ll compete on the April 13 card.

Asked about a fight at UFC 300, he replied: “I wanted to, but I don’t think so. I think I wanna do boxing, fight another fighter.

“I could fight anybody in the world right now, but no one can fight me. Everybody’s locked down to organisations, locked down to the UFC, PFL.”

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk could have major protocol change after Francis Ngannou controversy

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk could have major protocol change after Francis Ngannou controversy

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk could feature a drastic protocol change, with WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman pushing the proposal.

The huge fight between Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk could feature a major change in protocol.

After a nasty cut suffered by Fury in sparring resulted in their proposed bout on February 17 being cancelled, the fight has been rearranged for May 18.

It will still take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a new undisputed world heavyweight champion being crowned for the first time since Lennox Lewis’ victory of Evander Holyfield in 1999.

But there could be a dramatic alteration to how the fight is judged, if WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman is able to get his proposal signed off.

Sulaiman is worried about the potential of the historic clash being ruined by bad judging and is advocating for extra judges at ringside.

He thinks that the additions will ensure “the possibility of a wrong score goes to a minimum” and reduces the chance of mass controversy.

“We had proposed to use five judges or six judges,” he told Sky Sports.

“However that was not considered. It did not happen. I would still recommend [it].

“We do have a remote scoring system which is used for training and evaluating ring officials from all over the world. They score live in the WBC system that we developed.

“We have found through fights done in this system that the more officials that score a fight, the less possibility of a wrong decision.

“Anybody can have a bad night. If you have one judge have a bad night and the two others get it correct, you still save the fight.

“You have two judges with a difficult fight and then one round can shift the whole result.”

    Image: Getty

In addition, Sulaiman is also taking steps to ensure instant video replay is deployed for the slugfest.

He is confident it will happen and cited Fury’s last fight with Francis Ngannou as an example whereby the referee thought his cut was from a punch, though a replay showed it was a clear headbutt.

He added: “The initial idea was to put together specific guidelines of the usage of instant replay and we’re in that process.

So we’re going to work with the producers of the feed to see what equipment and what communications are needed, what the review panel will be, just go into details.

“As an example, we did instant replay in the UK with Charlie Edwards and [Julio Cesar] Martinez and we just did instant replay in Fury-Ngannou when Fury was cut.

“The referee he didn’t see any action that cut, ruled it a punch and then the British Boxing Board of Control and myself looked at the screen, the big screen in the stadium and saw the head butt so we called it officially a headbutt.

“But the idea of having the possibility of reviewing a major controversial happening inside the ring, to make the right decision, the right call at the time is basically it.

“To have the absolute certainty that there will not be a controversy. That in a fight of this magnitude would be absolutely unacceptable.”

Usyk and Fury are set to fight on May 18th.

Oleksandr Usyk included a ‘secret clause’ in the Tyson Fury fight contract, which could shake up the heavyweight division.

The unbeaten world champions were set to meet in an undisputed title clash on February 17.

However, Fury pulled out of the fight earlier this month after suffering a horrific cut during sparring.

A new date of May 18 has since been confirmed. Per The Sun, both men have decided to forfeit a whopping £10 million if they withdraw.

Tyson Fury Talks Francis Ngannou, Anthony Joshua And Oleksandr Usyk
Fury doubled down on his offer to Ngannou and said Joshua is ‘dead’ in his eyes.

According to Usyk’s trainer, Sergey Lapin, the reigning WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion has protected himself even further.

Usyk will fight on May 18 even if Fury pulls out of their fight, with Filip Hrgovic waiting in case the Gypsy King pulls out again.

He explained to Fruity Slots: “I hope Usyk will get the chance to settle the score with Fury on May 18.

“But if he continues to run, then we have a clause in the agreement to replace Fury with Filip Hrgovic.

“Hrgovic is the backup opponent, so the show will go on regardless of whether he shows up, this was also confirmed by His Excellency Turki Al Sheikh.”

Croatian fighter Hrgovic is the number nine heavyweight in the world and is ready to make the step up.

An accidental elbow from Agron Smakici was enough to force Fury out of the biggest fight in modern boxing history.

Lapin believes Usyk will ‘expose’ Fury when they finally face off in Saudi Arabia.

The WBC heavyweight champion looked less than convincing in his last fight, a split decision win over former UFC star Francis Ngannou.

Lapin continued: “Let’s say he did get cut – through a head guard and with large training gloves – can you imagine what will happen to his head when he receives a bomb from the Usyk in a ten-ounce glove?

    Both men are undefeated. (Image

“If Fury finally dares to enter the ring on May 18, then it will be a terrible dream for him, he has never boxed with a boxer of this level in his life.

“[Francis] Ngannou exposed Fury for what he is, a fighter with too many miles on the clock, a fighter who has had too many wars.

“And, a fighter who is now in rapid decline to the point he’s been badly troubled by sparring partners.”

Vitali Klitschko has brutally told Tyson Fury what he needs to do to beat Oleksandr Usyk.

WBC title holder Fury meets WBO, WBA (super) and IBF champion Usyk on May 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Fury suffered a nasty cut in training which stopped them from fighting last month.

After the postponement, footage surfaced online of the incident that led to the devastating cut.

Both fighters have agreed to forfeit a whopping £10 million if they withdraw from their upcoming clash.

Ahead of Fury facing Usyk, Klitschko has given the British star advice on how to beat the Ukrainian fighter.

Speaking to filmmaker Andrew Drury, the 52-year-old joked Fury must stay off junk food, alcohol and drugs.

The former world heavyweight champion said: “Not so much junk food, no alcohol, no drugs and good prepare for this fight.”

Fury ballooned up in weight during his hiatus from boxing.

But he turned his life around and beat Deontay Wilder to become world champion.

The self-proclaimed ‘Gypsy King’ has the chance to secure undisputed status in the heavyweight division.

On Fury vs. Usyk, Klitschko, who held the WBC world heavyweight title during his legendary career, added: “Everybody expect very dramatic interesting fight, but nobody in the world can predict the decision of this fight. It’s heavyweight division, every punch make a decision.

“And that’s why it will be biggest mistake to say who will be the winner. Yes, of course I keep my fingers crossed for Usyk.

“I hope Usyk will be winner in this fight and bring WBC belt back to Ukraine. But let’s see.”

Fury heads into his clash with Usyk having eked out a controversial decision victory over former UFC heavyweight king Francis Ngannou last October.

As for Usyk, he hasn’t fought since last August when he stopped Daniel Dubois.

Tyron Woodley has had his say on Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul.

UFC legend Tyron Woodley has made a bold claim about Mike Tyson ahead of his fight against Jake Paul.

Tyson will return to boxing when he takes on Paul at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 20.

It will be his first appearance in a ring since his exhibition bout against fellow boxing icon Roy Jones Jr back in November 2020.

‘The Problem Child’ was slammed for his ‘shameless’ warning to ‘Iron’ Mike after the shock announcement.

UFC superstar Conor McGregor didn’t hold back as he shared his honest thoughts on Paul vs. Tyson.

Former UFC champion Woodley has also weighed in on the bout which will be aired on Netflix.

Woodley, who won the UFC welterweight title during his MMA career, believes Tyson will beat Paul and thinks the 30-year age difference means nothing.

He also reckons the 57-year-old could beat the current heavyweight champions, with Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk in possession of the world titles.

“I mean I’ve been in the ring twice with Jake, and I don’t want to get in the ring once with fucking Mike,” said Woodley.

“The age is not a factor. That’s a wash. Experience level is obviously going to go to Mike Tyson.

“If Jake Paul beats Mike, I don’t give a f**k if he’s 70, you’re gonna have to put at last an ounce of respect on his name.”

Woodley added: “Mike Tyson right now off muscle memory alone could step on the wrong eggshell and let off a combination that could kill most people.

“He has power and ability to shift organs in your body if he hits you with the right force. So I think he forgot more technique than Jake Paul has ever learned in his life.

“If he gets knocked out by Mike Tyson at 58, 59, 60, 71, he would join the other 99% of the regular motherf**kers on Earth, that’s what I say.”
