Decades-Long Regret: Mike Tyson’s Surprising Apology to Mitch Green

Mike Tyson, is known for being legendary for his boxing prowess. Apart from that he is also well known for his controversial past, and now he has made headlines for issuing an apology to Mitch Green, the gang leader he had a violent altercation with 35 years ago and nearly killed in the process.

35 Years Later Mike Tyson Apologises To Gang Leader Mitch Green For Punching Him to Near Death In a Street Fight

35 Years Later Mike Tyson Apologises To Gang Leader Mitch Green For Punching Him to Near Death In a Street Fight

What happened between Mike Tyson and Mitch Green and Why did he apologised?

As reported by Talksports, the two men had a long-standing feud. And this resulted in a brutal brawl in Harlem in 1988. Which left Tyson with a broken hand and Green with a swollen shut eye, facial bruising, and a nasty cut on the bridge of his nose. Notably, Tyson had beaten Green so hard that he feared he had killed Green in the process.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, with Green confronting Tyson outside a clothing shop in Harlem. Green was part of a notorious New York gang and believed Tyson stepping into his turf was a liberty he could not accept without losing face.

After he confronted him what followed was a violent beating. Known for his deadly strikes Tyson landed the first punch and several more following. Green’s version of events is that Tyson turned his rings around to avoid damaging them and then sucker-punched him. Tyson claims that he was drunk and did not realize that Green was high on angel dust, so he was throwing punches and crunching Green, who was weaving and wobbling from side to side but did not go down. Tyson then did a Bruce Lee-style roundhouse kick and Green went down.

However, Green backed up and kicked Tyson. So this time Tyson did what he is known for taking Green down again. After which when he tried to make his escape in his Rolls-Royce, his driver told him they could not move as Green was under the wheels. Green got up once again and tore off one of the car’s wing mirrors, further enraging Tyson. This time, Tyson got out of his limousine and landed his signature right uppercut, sending Green flying into the air and coming down like a ragdoll, right on his head.

Tyson was terrified in the aftermath that he had killed Green. However, by the time the police arrived, they found Green alive but heavily bruised and battered. Tyson did not escape the chaos without injury either, suffering a hairline fracture of his right hand that postponed his upcoming title defense against Frank Bruno.

    Mike Tyson Apologised

Now, after 35 years, Tyson has apologized for the incident in his HotBoxin Podcast. Having chat with Rapper Tony Yayo when he was pressed that during his hay days he knocked out many including Green. To which Tyson said, “I’m sorry for what I did.” It is somewhat unexpected statement from Iron Mike who has had a controversial career, both inside and outside the ring.

Tyson’s apology shows that even the toughest of fighters can have a change of heart and acknowledge their mistakes. It also highlights the importance of owning up to one’s past actions and making amends where possible. It is a valuable lesson for everyone, not just professional athletes.

The incident between Tyson and Green remains one of the most infamous street fights in boxing history, but hopefully, Tyson’s apology can help bring some closure to the matter and be a step towards healing the wounds caused by their rivalry.

Butterbean vs Mike Tyson – Boxing’s ultimate four-round slugfest

Mike Tyson facing Butterbean during the 1990s was the ultimate four-round slugfest. Unfortunately for boxing fans, we never got to see it.

What might have been if Tyson and Butterbean got pitched together in an explosive match-up?

Tyson facing Butterbean in a barnstorming match-up over four rounds is one of the sport’s biggest regrets.

The sensational line-up and truly fantastic knockout fest were discussed during the 1990s but didn’t happen.

    Mike Tyson vs Butterbean

Tyson lived up to his moniker of the ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ as Eric ‘Butterbean’ Esch smashed his opponents out in an opening couple of rounds.

Butterbean, known as ‘The King of the Four Rounders,’ would undoubtedly have been in with a puncher’s chance.

Iron Mike could be his own worst enemy. However, he was the best finisher in the sport when he was on it.

Tyson closed the show early like no other. In addition, Butterbean did his thing, usually with one punch.

In an interview discussing the possibility, Esch revealed an offer on the table back in the day. He also says a new request was made as Tyson returned in 2020.

“I’m totally retired,” Esch told Fred Talks Fighting.

“There’s a lot of talk about me being in that fight with Tyson was all actually offered to me (in) an exhibition.

“But I know when it’s time, I know I’m old, I’ve got grandkids, I’ve got nine grandkids. I’m just enjoying my life right now.”

Did Butterbean ever beat Mike Tyson? - Quora

    Butterbean fight offer

Speaking to the UK media, Esch added that he got offered the chance before Roy Jones Jr. fought Tyson in their exhibition.

“I was in that dark place. There was no way it was possible,” said Esch.

“I’m alive right now. I’m good to go. And Mike is in great shape. It would be a hell of a fight.

“We’d both come to fight. Mike isn’t going to run from me. That’s where his big mistake would be.”

Regarding explosiveness, Tyson vs Butterbean is in a world of its own when the pair were at the height of their powers.

Butterbean began knocking everyone out in 1994 when Tyson resumed his career following a prison sentence.

It was talked bout for years, but ultimately, Butterbean fought Larry Holmes, which was the wrong decision.

Furthermore, Larry had too much skill, even in 2002. Butterbean should have gone for Tyson and chased it harder for the fans.

  • Mike Tyson punching machine knocks out Carl Williams in just 93 seconds

Mike Tyson punching machine knocks out Carl Williams in just 93 seconds

OVER a quarter of a century ago today, on July 21, 1989, a near-peak and invincible-looking Mike Tyson defended his heavyweight titles against a talented boxer named Carl Williams – this fight marked either Tyson’s sixth defence as undisputed king  (since beating Tony Tucker in August of 1987 to capture all three alphabelt titles,) or it marked his second defence as the “real” undisputed ruler (since beating Michael Spinks in June of 1988 to win the lineal crown) – depending on your view.

In any case, a then 36-0 “Iron” Mike had no trouble whatsoever against the 22-2 Williams. Known as “The Truth,” 29-year-old Williams, tall at 6’4” and also athletic and in possession of a good left jab, had previously shown his qualities as a fighter by taking an ageing yet still capable Larry Holmes the full 15-rounds four years earlier. That close loss was Williams’ first crack at the heavyweight crown and now, against the feared Tyson, he was a huge underdog in getting his second shot.

The two had sparred a number of years before, with both men having differing takes on how the action, in Catskill, went. Tyson said that he was just a kid at the time and that Williams couldn’t do anything to him. While Williams stated to HBO that he had, after having endured a tough first day with Tyson, “busted him up” during the second day’s sparring. It was an interesting sideline to the fight at the Convention Centre in Atlantic City, but nothing more. To a fan, everyone felt Tyson would easily win.

Williams, though, was a good fighter. Fast, brave and having that nice jab in his arsenal, he had almost everything apart from a reliable chin. Williams had been down some seven times before his date with Tyson, and though he had a reputation for getting back up after being felled, his chin, the experts felt, would not allow him to survive too long against the 23-year-old champ known as “Kid Dynamite.” The experts were proven correct.

Williams, who certainly hadn’t frozen as had so many of Tyson’s opponents, took the fight to the champion and the action, as brief as it was, was interesting and exciting. Then, dipping inside, Tyson exploded a superb left hook flush on Williams’ suspect jaw. “Oh, what a left hook!” exclaimed Reg Gutteridge, doing commentary for ITV in the UK. Williams fell backwards to the canvas, struggled to pick himself up as he lay against the ropes, and was then deemed too badly dazed to continue. Williams had beaten the count, but referee and former fighter Randy Neumann chose to wave the fight off. Williams then went into a rage, claiming he had been clear-headed and fine to continue. Replays, though, showed how Williams, when asked if he was okay by Neumann, failed to either raise his hands or reply with anything other than, as Jim Watt said during his co-commentating duties, “a lifeless shrug.”

The time of the KO was just 93-seconds and once again, it seemed as though Tyson might never lose. Astonishingly, Tyson would lose in his very next fight, when massive outsider Buster Douglas shocked the entire world in Tokyo.

Williams never again enjoyed such a high profile fight, yet he did tangle with some notable names post-Tyson. Tommy Morrison stopped him, as did Frank Bruno. Williams retired in 1997 with a decent enough 30-10 (21) record. After boxing, Williams found employment as a security guard at Ground Zero, the scene of the terrible atrocities of September 2001.

Throughout his career, West has continually defied expectations and disrupted the status quo, cementing his reputation as a visionary artist unafraid to explore unconventional ideas. While details about Censori’s background and aspirations are limited, her rumored participation in West’s adult film project hints at a willingness to explore new artistic avenues and challenge societal taboos. The prospect of Kanye West collaborating with his wife, Bianca Censori, in an adult film project, blurs the lines between art, entertainment, and controversy.

In an era marked by heightened scrutiny and debates surrounding censorship and morality, such a collaboration would undoubtedly provoke a wide range of reactions, from curiosity to outrage. Yet, it also raises important questions about the nature of artistic expression and the boundaries of creative freedom. As fans and critics alike await further clarification from the parties involved, the speculation serves as a reminder of the power of imagination and the complexities of navigating fame and creativity in the digital age. Until concrete details emerge, the rumors will continue to fuel discussion and speculation, shaping perceptions of Kanye West and Bianca Censori’s evolving roles in the world of entertainment.

“That’s a Big Problem”: While Opening Up About Michael Jackson’s Kindness Towards Children ‘Dying of Unique Illness’, Late Icon’s Son and Mike Tyson Dive Deep Into the “Core Issue” of an Unhappy America

In a country dripping with wealth, why does happiness seem so elusive? The U.S. stands as the 15th happiest nation. An intriguing rank, given its affluence. The answer, perhaps, lies not in dollar signs but in deeper human connections. Enter Prince Jackson and Mike Tyson. A recent episode of Hotboxin’ touched on this enigma.

Prince’s reminiscences about his father, pop icon Michael Jackson, painted a distinct narrative. It wasn’t just about melodies; it was about the heartbeats of children fighting rare illnesses. Tyson, the former boxing titan, had a perspective that might surprise you. Dive deep with us into a discussion that extends beyond fame.

Mike Tyson and Prince Jackson discuss: The true fabric of society

That's a Big Problem”: While Opening Up About Michael Jackson's Kindness Towards Children 'Dying of Unique Illness', Late Icon's Son and Mike Tyson Dive Deep Into the “Core Issue” of an Unhappy

Delving into the heart of the conversation, the contrast between wealth and happiness became the backdrop for an illuminating discussion. America’s glittering skyscrapers and bustling cities might imply prosperity, but the underlying sentiment narrates a different tale. It was within this setting that Prince Jackson, shared personal memories and insights on the episode of Hotboxin’.

Transitioning from broad strokes to specific moments, Prince’s voice was earnest as he admitted, “I don’t think I know what even the core issue is. So it’s hard to generate a solution from it.” Mike Tyson, not one to shy away from directness, responded swiftly, stating, “The core issue is no one cares.

Prince, clearly resonating with Tyson’s sentiment, expanded on the thought, saying, “Yeah and that’s a big problem. So that’s why we like the idea of healing because to help someone heal is an active care, is an act of kindness and it’s not something that’s easy. My father used to go to Children’s Hospitals and he would spend time with terminally ill children or people who were dying of very unique illnesses.

He continued, “It’s not something that’s easy on the heart and it’s something that he was always very happy to do. After he died, I used to go to the Children’s Hospital in LA and I would volunteer with a program called literally healing and we would just go and spend time with the kids, read books to them and stuff like that.”

This poignant recollection not only underscored Michael Jackson’s character but also highlighted the deeper issue at hand. A society’s happiness isn’t just its GDP; it’s woven into the fabric of compassion, care, and active involvement.

  • Iron Mike Tyson’s Extraordinary Career

    Iron Mike Tyson’s Extraordinary Career

In early 1986 Mike Tyson won another 4 bouts inside the distance, improving his record to a perfect 19-0. In May ‘86 Tyson had his first fight that went the 10 distance, when he won a hard fought 10 round unanimous decision against James ‘Quick’ Tillis, which provided a valuable learning experience for the young pugilist. Tyson continued winning, and winning in style, notably beating heavyweights like Mitch Green, Reggie Gross, Marvis Frazier, Jose Ribalta, and Alfonso Ratliff. By September ‘86, just 18 months after he made his professional debut, young Iron Mike compiled an impressive record of 27-0 with 25 wins coming by way of knockout.

This paved the way for Tyson to challenge the WBC heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick, whom Tyson made quick work of stopping the champion in the 2nd round. With the victory, 20 year old Iron Mike Tyson had become the youngest boxer in history to capture a major heavyweight world title. The destructive fashion of the victory was vintage Tyson, and the young champion appeared to have a very promising future. In March 1987 Tyson won a 12 round unanimous decision in a unification bout against James ‘Bonecrusher’ Smith to win the WBA belt to go along with his WBC belt. After defending his unified championship when he scored a brutal knockout against former champion Pinklon Thomas, Tyson would then add the IBF belt when he won a 12 round unanimous decision against Tony Tucker in August 1987.

Young Iron Mike had earned all three major alphabet titles of his time. Tyson closed out 1987 when he defended his three belts by scoring a 7th round knockout against Tyrell Biggs. 1988 was a tremendous year for Iron Mike. In January he stopped former dominant long reigning heavyweight champion Larry Holmes in 4 rounds. Then in March Tyson scored a 2nd round stoppage against former champion Tony Tubbs. This paved the way for a big showdown in June, 1988 against the undefeated lineal world heavyweight champion Michael Spinks. Even though Spinks did not hold a major world title, he still technically held a valid claim to the heavyweight lineage as the man who beat the man, when Spinks had dethroned Holmes in 1985 about 6 months after Iron Mike had made his pro debut. Tyson destroyed Spinks in 91 seconds to earn the lineal world championship to go along with the WBC/WBA/IBF belts. This victory marked Iron Mike Tyson as the baddest man on the planet, where he had solidified his claim as undisputed world heavyweight champion by making quick work of Jinx Spinks. Mike Tyson defended the undisputed crown two times in 1989, scoring a 5th round stoppage against Frank Bruno in February, and scoring a 1st round stoppage against Carl Williams in July.

But in February 1990, Tyson lost his undisputed championship when he was stopped by Buster Douglas in round 10 in Tokyo, in what was undoubtedly the biggest upset during the long rich history of professional boxing. Tyson bounced back with 1st round wins against Henry Tillman and Alex Stewart to finish 1990. The following year, when Evander Holyfield was the undisputed world heavyweight champion (having beaten Buster the previous year), Tyson was the universally recognized #1 contender, with the WBC, WBA, and IBF all recognizing him as such. Meanwhile, Donovan Razor Ruddock was the consensus #2 contender, where all three alphabet organizations had him just behind Mike in their respective rankings. Tyson scored a 7th round stoppage against Ruddock in March 1991, but the stoppage itself was viewed as somewhat controversial, and there was great demand for a rematch. In June ‘91 they ran it back, and again Tyson was victorious, this time by 12 round unanimous decision. Any hopes of reclaiming the championship for Tyson were derailed when he served a prison sentence from April 1992 until March 1995. During his time away, a lot happened in the heavyweight championship landscape, with Holyfield, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, and Michael Moorer being some of the notable champions during his absence.

Even Big George Foreman had become champion, more than 20 years after he had lost the title against the great Muhammad Ali. After early comeback victories against Peter McNeeley and Buster Mathis Jr, Tyson got an opportunity to fight for the WBC title in March 1996, when he had a rematch against Frank Bruno 7 years after their first encounter. Tyson was once again victorious, this time winning in round 3. Tyson then beat WBA champion Bruce Seldon, where he ultimately vacated the WBC belt, which paved the way to a long awaited showdown with Evander Holyfield in November 1996. Holyfield scored an upset victory over Iron Mike, and when the two had a rematch the following year, Tyson was disqualified for repeatedly biting Holyfield’s ear. Tyson was suspended for one year after that. Later in his career, Tyson was a shell of his former self. Indeed, he had never been the same destructive force he was early in his career since parting ways with trainer Kevin Rooney following his demolition job on Michael Spinks.

And after his prison sentence, despite still showing great speed and tremendous punching power, Mike was never able to replicate the blend of skills and stamina he celebrated earlier in his career, and after the Holyfield fights this became more pronounced. Tyson did have some strong showings later in his career against Frans Botha, Lou Savarese, and most notably Andrew Golota. His final bid at a championship was a losing effort against the great Lennox Lewis in June 2002. After the Lewis fight, Tyson had only one win, against Clifford Etienne. Tyson was stopped in the final two bouts of his career, first against Danny Williams in July 2004, and then against Kevin McBride in June 2005. That was the last professional match during the long and illustrious career of the extraordinary Iron Mike Tyson. Iron Mike may not have been the greatest heavyweight of all time, and much of his unfulfilled potential is nobody’s fault but his own. But Mike Tyson made his mark in boxing history and will forever be remembered as one of the most exciting prizefighters to ever lace them up. This edition of Rummy’s Corner will provide a fight-by-fight recap of Mike Tyson’s entire professional boxing career, including highlights from each and every fight, knockouts, and more!

In Tyson’s Shadow: The Heartbreaking Story of a 90s Boxer Possessing Knockout Power Similar to Mike Tyson

A boxer in the 90s was thought to have a more powerful punch than the legendary Mike Tyson, but his story ended tragically.

Tommy ‘The Duke’ Morrison was one of the finest boxers of his generation and has a series of eye-catching victories on his CV.

Morrison also famously starred in Rocky V as Tommy Gunn, a young promising boxer that Rocky took under his wing before the pair went from friends to foes.

Throughout his career, ‘The Duke’ fought and won against the likes of Geroge Foreman and Donovan ‘Razor’ Ruddock.

Many boxing fans wanted to see Morrison go up against Tyson in the ring but unfortunately the fight everyone wanted never materialised.

Morrison was most well known for his thunderous left hook that would instantly floor his opponents.

Mike Tyson: Tragic story of 90s boxer who had more power than Iron Mike

However, things started to spiral drastically for Morrison after he announced that he tested positive for HIV in 1996.

As a result, he was banned indefinitely from his sport by the Nevada Athletic Commission, right before his fight against Arthur Weathers.

The ban was upheld across the whole sport which ultimately led to the abrupt end of Morrison’s career.

Morrison and his wife, Trisha tried to get justice by claiming that the result in 1996 was a false positive.

However, that didn’t work and Morrison’s boxing career was over.

In 1997, things got worse as Morrison was convicted of driving under the influence after an incident left three people injured. He was ordered to spend time in rehab.

Morrison was given a two-year suspended sentence in 1999 after being caught driving under influence again.

He was then arrested on charges of intoxication and possessing a weapon.

Morrison’s life got worst as the decade came towards a close. ESPN reported that the former boxer bought a cave and slept in it through the turn of the millennium after he was convinced that the world was going to end in the year 2000.

He was then sentenced to two years imprisonment for the drugs and weapons charges and was sentenced to an additional year after he violated parole.

By the time he was released, his health had started to deteriorate, Morrison did try to resurrect his boxing career but that was to no avail.

In 2013, he was unable to move unaided and died at the age of 44.

Why has the Japanese Grand Prix changed date?

It may take many Formula One fans by surprise to see the next race following Australia is in Japan as usually the Suzuka circuit features much later in the F1 calendar

This year’s race was  moved to early April as part of F1’s bid to become more sustainable and net zero carbon by 2030.

The Japanese Grand Prix was one of the few races that saw it’s traditional date change as it was moved up earlier in the F1 calendar so it takes place in between the Australian and Chinese Grand Prix.

Therefore the organisation is wasting less on carbon emissions by taking shorter flights.

  • Lewis Hamilton’s worst F1 season starts and what happened next: Where could 2024 potentially rank?

Lewis Hamilton’s worst F1 season starts and what happened next: Where could 2024 potentially rank?

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, 2024 Australian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton is enduring his worst-ever start to an F1 season.

Lewis Hamilton’s start to the 2024 season isn’t what might be expected of a seven-time F1 World Champion, but is it his worst-ever start to a championship?

Shaking off the disappointment of his engine failure in Melbourne, Australia capped off a trio of tough races to kick off the 2024 championship as he occupies 10th in the Drivers’ Championship. In his 18th season in F1, is 2024 the worst start to a season Hamilton has ever had?

    3. 2023 – P5, P5, and P2 (38 points) – Fourth in the championship

With Hamilton scoring a podium for second place in last year’s Australian Grand Prix, it ensured that the 2023 season couldn’t be considered to be a bad start to the season. Even if it was one of Hamilton’s less successful years, it’s testimony to his lofty standards and abilities that two fifth-place finishes and a second-place rank as one of his worst season starts.

Hamilton had scored 38 points to place fourth in the championship after three races in 2023 but, with Mercedes open about having pursued the wrong development direction with the W13 and W14, Hamilton still wasn’t enamoured with his car despite claiming second place in Melbourne.

“I still feel uncomfortable in the car, though,” he said after the race.

“The car… I still don’t feel connected to it. So I’m driving as best I can with that disconnect. And I’m working as hard as I can to try and create that connect. But I think it’s a long project.

“Let’s keep pushing. We can close that gap. It’s going to be tough, but not impossible.”

Following that result, the season continued in more or less the same vein – even as Mercedes started introducing upgrades aimed at moving their design concept in a more favourable direction. Hamilton finished in the fourth-seventh place range for most of the season, with occasional high points like podiums in Canada, Great Britan, and Singapore, as well as very competitive outings for second place in Spain and Mexico.

But victory eluded him, marking his second winless season in F1, although he came close in Austin as he plied pressure on Max Verstappen – only to be disqualified afterward for a plank infringement.

    2. 2010 – P3, P6, and P6 (31 points) – Sixth in the championship

Having been the highest points scored in the second half of the 2009 championship, from Hungary onward, Hamilton’s hopes to kickstart 2010 with a strong showing initially looked good as he finished in third place in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

With Ferrari and Red Bull ahead of McLaren on pace in the season-opener, Hamilton was fighting for a podium place in Australia but ended up in sixth after Mark Webber took him out under braking.

Having started on the hard tyre in Malaysia, Hamilton was able to get involved at the sharp end of the pack in the first half of the race, but would end up in sixth place by the chequered flag as he ended up getting stuck behind Adrian Sutil.

The 2010 McLaren, while not an outright pacesetter, eventually underlined its potential as Hamilton would go on to take three wins – in Turkey, Canada, and Belgium – as well as five second places.

While the first three races didn’t quite work out for Hamilton, resulting in it being one of his weaker championship campaign beginnings, it was more circumstantial than performance-based and the rest of the season underlined this.

There was nothing circumstantial about the start of the 2009 championship, with McLaren simply not being up to the task to kick off the new regulations.

With the cars looking very different as the aerodynamic rules were overhauled, as well as the sport re-introducing slick tyres, it was notable that the two teams who had fought to the bitter end of the 2008 championship – McLaren and Ferrari – each fell away from the front of the pack as Red Bull and Brawn GP (now Mercedes) had their first moments in the sun.

Hamilton’s season kicked off in acrimonious circumstances as he was disqualified from the first race as the stewards felt he and McLaren had attempted to mislead them over the circumstances of a pass made by Jarno Trulli under Safety Car conditions.

Hamilton salvaged seventh in Malaysia, having started the race from 13th on the grid, as the race was abandoned early due to monsoon conditions in Sepang, before racing from ninth to sixth place in China.

The Shanghai race was a scrappy affair for Hamilton with spins and more minor mistakes that resulted in teammate Heikki Kovalainen finishing ahead despite having started behind.

With three races over in Hamilton’s first title defence, he was languishing in seventh place with just four points scored (points were only scored by the top eight in 2009). Under the current points system, Hamilton would have scored 14 points.

By mid-season, McLaren and Ferrari started to get on top of the new regulations and the British driver won in Hungary to kick off a very strong second half of the season in which he and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen enjoyed being the two top scorers. However, it was too late to salvage a championship assault, and Hamilton finished the year fifth overall.

Where does the 2023 F1 season rank for Lewis Hamilton?

    2024 – P7, P9, and retired (8 points) – 10th in the championship

Unfortunately for Hamilton, the depths of 2009 have been eclipsed by the start of the 2024 season. While the Mercedes W15 is, by comparison to the 2009 McLaren, a more competitive beast, the much closer field of today means that there is plenty of competition for the points places.

With Mercedes introducing a new design concept for the W15, both Hamilton and George Russell have indicated greater satisfaction with the new car, but this is yet to translate into higher placements than its immediate two predecessors.

Worse for Hamilton is that Russell appears to be far more comfortable with the W15’s foibles, and has had to watch on as his teammate has been ahead on track more often than not.

Despite Russell crashing out in Australia, Hamilton has less than half the points tally of his younger teammate and, at present, his best-placed finish is seventh at the season opener in Bahrain.

2009’s tally, points-adjusted, is 14 and, with Hamilton currently on eight points, it means that 2024 has been the worst opening trio of races in Hamilton’s career so far. He would have needed to finish seventh or higher in Australia to have eclipsed his 2009 tally, a tough ask even without his engine failure.

What are the prospects of F1 2024 being statistically the worst for Lewis Hamilton?

Hamilton is well-known for easing himself into a season, usually becoming faster and more dangerous an opponent as the championship wears on. Where others fatigue, Hamilton presses on. It’s for this reason that it’s not all doom and gloom for the seven-time World Champion just yet.

While the results haven’t been strong so far, the W15’s potential does seem far greater than its predecessors, and Russell has shown that, even without that potential being fully unlocked, it can be a stronger machine than perhaps Hamilton has shown so far.

Japan is one of Hamilton’s favourite circuits on the calendar and, having had the measure of Russell at Suzuka six months ago, there are plenty of reasons to be confident that Hamilton can bounce back.

Podiums, certainly, aren’t out of the question although, with Red Bull and Ferrari seemingly a step ahead, they may not be as plentiful as Mercedes would like. Victories? As it stands, they look unlikely, unless the performance potential of the W15 is greater than expected.

2022 ended up being Hamilton’s least successful campaign in Formula 1, despite a reasonable start to the year, as he finished sixth overall. With the field ever-closer in performance, 2024 may yet end up proving to be Hamilton’s nadir at Mercedes if things don’t rapidly turn around.

The issue for Mercedes is that Hamilton’s motivation might not be quite what it was, given he’s out of there at the end of the season…
