LEWIS HAMILTON continued to resurrect his title defence after blasting to pole position in Montreal.

The Mercedes ace followed up his victory in Monaco by snatching front spot for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.

The Brit is desperate to eat into rival team-mate Nico Rosberg’s 24 point lead in the championship.

And he wasted no time here by drawing first blood with a superb first flying lap that simply could not be beaten.

It is Hamilton’s fifth pole position here in Canada and he has won this race four times in the previous eight times it has been held.

Rosberg had no answer to Hamilton’s pace and starts second while Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was third fastest ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo.

Jenson Button was again out-qualified by his McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso after he made a mistake late on in the second session.

Button, 36, locked up and paid the price by being booted out of Q2 and qualified down in 12th place while Alonso qualified in 10th.

Button said: “Up until the last sector, it was looking good for P10 but then I never got the tow behind Fernando.”

Fellow Brit Jolyon Palmer also suffered more bad luck as he was eliminated from qualifying at the first stage after his flying lap was stopped when Manor’s Rio Haryanto crashed out.

Palmer, who starts in 17th, was looking to take full advantage as his Renault team-mate Kevin Magnussen was ruled out of qualifying due to his heavy crash in final practice.

Palmer said: “It is pretty annoying. I was happy with the lap but I missed out by a hundredth, and that’s like a sneeze in the car.”

Lewis Hamilton admitted there was still more to come from his Mercedes, despite snatching the 53rd pole of his career.

He said: “It doesn’t matter how far you are ahead, so long as you are ahead. I did not have the pace I had the previous day but it was enough.

“I think there is more pace in the car, but it was great it was close. It is going to be a good race and first is the best place to start.

“Ferrari have picked up the pace and the upgrades they have on their car seems to be working. This is a great track to test the ultimate speed, so I am excited to test myself against them.”

Nico Rosberg admitted he could not match Hamilton’s speed. He said: “My first lap was good but not enough to beat Lewis. I tried to pull it out the bag again but it was not enough.

“In the race, a win is still possible. It is all over the place weather-wise, so there is a chance. I will give it everything but pole would have been better.”

LEWIS HAMILTON delivered a knock-out punch that would have pleased boxing legend Muhammad Ali – leaving Nico Rosberg sparked out.

The Brit went toe-to-toe with his bitter rival into the first turn, exchanging blows that left Rosberg worse off.

It was a short bout between two heavyweights but was instrumental in helping Hamilton defend his world title, as the gap between the two was sliced to nine points.

And after this, the 45th victory of his career, Hamilton dedicated the win to the boxer, who sadly died last week.

Hamilton climbed from his car and did the Ali Shuffle as a mark of respect and then said: “I don’t normally dedicate wins but I want to dedicate this to someone who has inspired me — Muhammad Ali.

Hamilton repeats his success of 2015 in Montreal

“He was someone who inspired me and for the last 15 laps, all I could think about was him and the Rumble In The Jungle.

“I was thinking that maybe he was up there and watching the race, so for me – rest in peace.

“He was just such an iconic individual who everyone aspired to be like him. I wish I could be like him and carry confidence into a fight and outsmart at opponent.

“I am coming from a family who grew up with similar adversity, so he was someone I could look up to.”

Mercedes drivers Rosberg and Hamilton got off to a poor start

Unlike in Barcelona, on this occasion they were both able to continue racing, albeit with Rosberg dropping to 10th place after the first lap as he was forced to take evasive action to avoid further contact with Hamilton.

Hamilton and Rosberg’s bang came as a result of Vettel’s sensational start from the line as he blasted past Hamilton from third to first.

And the German set about building a lead out in front and at the halfway stage, Vettel had a 10.7 second lead over the Brit.

    6

Hamilton won in Canada last year

But that was wiped out when Vettel pitted for tyres catapulting Hamilton into the lead on lap 44 — his lucky number — it was also the 2,500th lap he has lead during his F1 career.

Hamilton seized his advantage and carved out a modest lead in front of Vettel, while the four-time world champion’s hopes of mounting a late fight were wrecked with two mistakes at the final turn.

His countryman Rosberg was also having more bad luck when his Merc picked up a puncture.

Yet credit to the championship leader, who was clearly riled by Hamilton’s first-lap challenge, as he had a great fight with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

And he pressed to the limit, going too far on the final lap, spinning off after getting passed Verstappen.

Yet he recovered and had to settle for fifth place behind the Dutch teen, who came home fourth while Williams’ Valtteri Bottas was third.

Meanwhile, it was a miserable afternoon for British duo Jenson Button and Jolyon Palmer, who were both forced to retire.

Button was first to pull over on lap 11 with his Honda-powered McLaren billowing out smoke.

It was hugely frustrating for the 36 year-old, who was confident of a substantial points haul from this race.

    6

Hamilton celebrates with the trophy after overcoming Vettel in Montreal

He said: “The engine went pop. I lost power and then it was pretty obvious why when I looked in the mirror and I could see lots of smoke and some sparks.

“It is a shame. It is an engine we have used for a few weeks, so I think we pushed it a little bit too far.”

And Palmer’s wretched run in 2016 continued and he is still without a point in his debut season when he retired after lap 18.

He said: “We had a water leak so I had to stop the car. The engine was working well, the car felt good.

“We were looking alright until then.

“A little bit of a lucky break wouldn’t go amiss right now. That would be nice.”

It was Hamilton’s fifth win here in nine attempts and breezes new life into this championship and he says his bang with Rosberg was not on purpose.

He said: “What an amazing day. The first turn was horrible. I had another really bad start.

“Seb and Nico got a good start and with the tyres cold, and with big understeer, I was grateful Nico and I did not damage our cars.

Hamilton and Vettel celebrate on the Montreal podium

“I had no grip and I just understeered and the guys behind me were tiptoeing through there. It was not intentional.

“This was one of my best races for a while and we are going to take it one race at a time.

“There is still work to do. We are going to keep on improving this car, going to stay on the road. Ferrari are getting faster, so we have to keep our heads down and keep on pushing.”

Meanwhile, Rosberg, who suffered a spin on the final lap, said he was left “angry” by Hamilton’s first-lap block.

He added: “Sebastian had a great start, I had a decent one, Lewis had slow one. In Spain I went for the outside and made it work.

“Here, I went for the outside again and he did a real hard racing manoeuvre and I was off. I was [angry] at the time but that’s racing.”

Driver of the Day: Nico Rosberg was in the thick of it all afternoon and drove his wheels off.

Move of the Race: Rosberg left it late to leapfrog Kimi Raikkonen at the final turn on lap 58.

Mistake of the Race: Rosberg spun off having overtaken Verstappen on the final lap.

Milkfloat: Rio Haryanto’s Manor was slow and he came home in last place.

Hamilton, 31, is looking to take his momentum into this weekend’s race in Baku, as the Azerbaijani capital hosts its maiden Grand Prix.

He said: “Last weekend was a really positive one for me.

“I felt strong on Friday, got the pole on Saturday — and then just felt phenomenal in the car during the race.

“After the first five races I could never have predicted I would be back at the sharp end of the title fight so soon.

“But we’re starting to have cleaner weekends as a team and are showing real strength as a unit — coming through with results even when things aren’t perfect.

“I can’t wait to get to Baku, experience another new country and see what we can do on the track.

“There’s never been a doubt in my mind over what I can do in this car.”

Astonishingly, the world champion drove just EIGHT practice laps in his Mercedes team’s simulator to learn the quickest way around the 3.7mile circuit.

Cocky Hamilton is on the crest of a wave after wins in Monaco and Montreal and he showed his swagger here at the brand new circuit in Azerbaijan.

And despite not even seeing the track first, he comfortably topped both practice sessions here on Friday.

He said: “On the simulator it was very easy, but the simulator is not very good, it’s a very bad computer game basically so it doesn’t say much.

“It took me five or six [laps] to learn it and then I already did the best time and I couldn’t beat it after that.

“I don’t drive the simulator a lot because it’s not at its best at the moment. We’re working on trying to get it better.

“I quite like the idea of going out and not knowing, seeing it for the first time. I was kind of excited about that.

“I’ve walked around circuits from Formula Renault to probably my third or fourth year in Formula One.

“It made zero difference to my weekend performance. So I’ve not walked a track since 2010, it makes zero difference.”

F1 drivers Jenson Button and Hamilton’s team-mate Nico Rosberg were both hugely critical of the lack of run-off areas around this brand new track.

But Hamilton says there is TOO MUCH space for error, despite almost all of the other 21 drivers making cock-ups during practice.

He added: “I’ve seen huge one here at Turn 16, massive. I think it’s too big a run-off area.

“There’s a white line and then there’s ten metres probably to the wall on your left, which we’ll never drive there.

“I like Monaco and that doesn’t have hardly any run-off areas, only in the areas we really, really need.

“That’s why I love Monaco and also Montreal, because there’s not really much room for that.”

Hamilton’s excellent day was made even better as his nearest championship rivals Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel both suffered mechanical problems.

And Rosberg admits his spectacular drop in form has been “a blow” after shipping 34 points in just two races to Hamilton.

He said: “I’m well happy. One thing for sure, these drivers, they moan so much — so much about so many things.I guarantee you.

“It is bumpy down the main straight and you cannot really see turn one that well when the car’s vibrating, so it’s really hard.

“But that’s a part of racing.

“These guys want it to be smooth, like smoother than ever and have no vibrations and no bumps and they want to take all the character and life out of these tracks.

“I’m glad that it has bumps but there are going to be some people that say those things, and I’ll just sit there and smile.

The world champion uploaded clips to his Snapchat account at around 3.30am yesterday morning, including one of him smoking a shisha pipe.

British Formula One star Hamilton, 31, was partying with pals after finishing third in Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix.
It is the latest in a series of gaffes involving the three-time world champ.
Last month, police in New Zealand launched an investigation after he appeared to film himself riding a motorbike on a motorway.
That incident came just hours after his remarks about “a lot of Chinese people” on a flight had also raised eyebrows.

Hamilton has also been warned about filming within the F1 paddock, which breaks strict broadcasting rules.

“It doesn’t mean a thing that he’s won the last five races.”

Hamilton had a healthy lead but a safety car was called after Nicholas Latifi crashed with five laps to go.

Controversially, race director Michael Masi allowed the likes of Max Verstappen to overtake lapped cars separating him from Hamilton.

With Verstappen on soft tyres, he was able to easily overtake Hamilton on the final lap of the race.

Speaking to GQ, he said that it was the day in his life that “hurt him the most” and that the only consolation was that he had his father there for support.

The Brit ace said: “Was I robbed? Obviously.

“I mean, you know the story. But I think what was really beautiful in that moment, which I take away from it, was my dad was with me.

“And we’d gone through this huge roller coaster of life together, ups and downs.

“And the day that it hurt the most, he was there, and the way he raised me was to always stand up, keep your head high.

“And I obviously went to congratulate Max, and not realizing the impact that that would have, but also I was really conscious of, like, there’s a mini-me watching.

“This is the defining moment of my life. And I think it really was. I felt it.

The Red Bull Team Principal and CEO is going about his business as usual as Geri continues to stand by her man as the “sexting” scandal continues to loom large over the couple.

Pictures show a smiley Geri and her hubby clapping along with hundreds of others at the event as they watch the enthralling races unfold.

Horner has swapped the high octane world of F1 for the racing fields at Kimblewick Races.

He watched the horse races with a beaming smile as he continues to try and put the turbulent months of allegations and grillings behind him.

More photos show Horner with his children, pals and even dog for Easter Saturday’s event.

Geri was in a particularly jolly mood – despite reports of her recently being “in turmoil” – as she took pictures with some of the winning horses – including her own.

Lift Me Up – named after one of her solo songs – strode to victory and even earned himself a flashy trophy.

The Red Bull Racing chief isn’t expected to be seen again until the start of the F1 race week in Japan.

The race, which takes place at the Suzuka Circuit on Sunday, 7, will be the fourth of the thrilling season that has already seen Red Bull win two out of the three races.

Despite Horner seeing success on the track there are still looming questions over his position at Red Bull.

F1’s Christian Horner says ‘time to draw a line’ on claims of inappropriate behaviour
Horner was cleared by Red Bull over the accusations but many pivotal figures at the constructor have voiced concerns over the way the matter was handled.

As what started as Horner’s personal controversy has morphed into an power struggle within Red Bull in recent weeks.

Last Sunday, sources alleged that Horner agreed to a “public ceasefire” with senior management after emergency crunch talks.

With the internal battles at the sports top constructor set to end after Horner, Jos Verstappen and Helmut Marko seemingly agreeing to stop their disputes, The Mirror reported.

Verstappen Sr, 52, had been publicly backing the suspended female employee and called for Horner to be axed, accusing him of ripping the team apart.

When asked if it was time to “draw a line” under the situation, as Horner insisted people do, Jos said: “I think it’s a bit too late for that now.

“If that’s what he wants, fine, but I don’t think it will be possible.”

It comes as the woman who accused Horner of inappropriate behaviour has now lodged a complaint against him with the sport’s ruling body the FIA.

The unnamed woman, who has been suspended from her job at the team’s base in Milton Keynes, has three complaints over Horner’s conduct since the start of February, it is claimed.

On March 7, the woman was suspended on full pay from Red Bull HQ amid claims her “honesty was called into question.”

The reasons allegedly given to her were that she appeared dishonest owing to inconsistencies in the evidence she had provided.

Ex-driver Horner has said he wants to move on from the scandal, with ex-Spice Girl wife Geri Halliwell. 51, standing by him.

The F1 chief and Geri have always put on a united – if awkward – front at the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia Grand Prix but Geri was no where to be seen in Australia.

Despite Geri’s very visual display of standing by her man, sources claim that the singer is “in turmoil”.

It was also confirmed by Drive to Survive chief James Gay-Rees that Netflix was planning on referencing the allegations in next years season.

It will potentially reopen wounds for Horner and his wife Spice Girls star Geri Halliwell as they attempt to move on from the drama.

Horner has previously raged against the scrutiny over the scandal – but now it will be the focus of the Netflix show watched by millions.
