The opening sprint race of the season proved to be a rather welcome reminder of the good old days for Lewis Hamilton in Shanghai.

Days where he fought tooth and nail for race wins, rather than against his own car as he has been in recent seasons with this misfiring Mercedes of his.

The chance to claim the chequered flag for the first time in 868 days was eventually snatched away from him in emphatic fashion by Max Verstappen after the Red Bull driver stormed to victory, adding another eight valuable championship points to his tally.

But for Hamilton a second-place finish and the sorely missed high that comes from challenging at the front of the grid was a timely aide-memoire of why he has dedicated 17 years of his life to the sport.

The smile on his face – one which has made understandably sporadic appearances in recent times – as he acknowledged the crowd was a sight to lift the spirits.

‘Anytime you have a good result it’s always a confidence boost. That’s the way of life and you have a good day and it lifts your spirits for sure,’ said Hamilton.

‘I think the circumstances are special with the rain yesterday but you still have to put that lap in. At the end of the day, being on the front row, I don’t remember having that view for a long time. It feels like a really long time. I don’t know if we’ve had it in the last couple of years.

‘To be able to fight into turn one for the lead reminds me of why I love what I do and what we do.’

It was vintage Hamilton when the lights went out as the Brit, starting second behind Lando Norris, was sharper off the line than his compatriot and retained the inside line heading into the tight and narrowing bends of turns one and two.

Norris ran wide and ultimately lost not only grip but six places too, all but ending his chances of causing an upset.

Initially Verstappen, who started fourth after struggling to keep his car on the straight and narrow in a wet sprint qualifying session on Friday, struggled to make in-roads from the second row. The Dutchman was heard on the radio asking his team ‘why is my battery flat?’.

But once that issue was resolved he managed to reel in first Fernando Alonso and then Hamilton. And after establishing a lead of more than two seconds ahead of Hamilton within a lap of his overtake, Verstappen never looked back and stormed to a remarkable eighth sprint race win of his career.

‘The first two laps I had to really defend but at the same time also my battery ran ran out. It was not charging basically. So I had to do some changes on the steering wheel,’ said the 26-year-old.

‘Once I had that all under control and then also the peak of the new tyres were gone, I could just rely on on the pace of the car.’

Verstappen’s performance suggests it will take something extraordinary to topple him later today in qualifying for tomorrow’s race, the first held in China since 2019.

Hamilton is under no illusions if how significant a part the rain in qualifying played. With the weather set fair for the rest of the weekend.

Hamilton added: ‘If I’m really honest, we’ve not made a huge step from the last race, the car is exactly the same and we’re battling the same issues that we had in the last race.

‘I think pace-wise we are probably in a similar position. I think today is going to be interesting to see if we can wing it a little bit and try to get as close to top five but we’re currently not top five qualifiers. Just getting to Q3 will be important today.’

The fashion designer and the retired footballer, 48, then took a chaffeur-driven car to £200-a-head restaurant in Saint-Paul de Vence on the French Riviera, believed to be the famous La Colombe d’Or.

The couple were said to be joined by their four children along with Victoria’s parents Jackie and Tony and were later flown back to Luton Airport.

A source told The Sun: ‘David chose somewhere incredibly remote.

‘The restaurant regularly hosts A-list celebrities during the Cannes Film Festival so none of the Riviera locals bat an eyelid when they see a celebrity.

Oswald’s is certainly credited for its discretion, with no social media presence, and even its website offers little insight into what guests can expect when they step through the unassuming front door.

The club’s interior is no doubt inspired by The Gilded Age, with chandeliers, columns and red upholstered chairs, while a mantlepiece is adorned with roses and greenery, changed twice a week, according to Tatler.

Actress Eva Longoria is also expected to fly in from America and ‘one or two’ of the Spice Girls might make an appearance. But, say sources, it won’t be a ‘circus’.

‘The champagne will be flowing, as will the tequila but it won’t be a big bash.

‘Despite what people think, Victoria isn’t a showy, flashy person and she doesn’t have crowds of mates, just special ones who she wants to spend her big day with,’ the source added.

The insider added that ‘one or two’ of the Spice Girls are expected to joined Victoria for her birthday celebration, but it’s unlikely to be ‘a circus.’

For Victoria, though, there is one guest who it really will warm her heart to see – daughter-in-law Nicola Peltz.

Two years ago, the women were not on speaking terms after Brooklyn and Nicola’s wedding in April 2022, and Victoria and David both feared that they could lose Brooklyn over the feud.

‘Repairing that fallout is something that Victoria is immensely proud of, and it brings her so much joy that she will be part of these celebrations. To have her there is a wonderful gift.’

As recently as last month, Brooklyn Beckham celebrated his 25th birthday with dinner at the establishment, joined by wife Nicola Peltz and her parents.

It’s significant that Birley himself chooses to spend his evenings at Oswald’s, welcoming guests personally in the company of pet dog Peg , or holding court with friends.

Opened in 2018, the private members club is named after Robin Birley’s grandfather, Sir Oswald, a royal portraitist. His late grandfather’s photo hangs proudly behind the reception desk, according to Tatler.

There aren’t many venues that could mention Boris and Carrie Johnson, several other major Conservative Party figures, the Queen and Tom Cruise in the same breath, but they are among those to have dined in style at the hushed-up restaurant.

Cruise joined Beyonce and Jay-Z, as well as actor Henry Cavill, for dinner here last month – with Cruise’s patient dealings with fans irritating taxi drivers.

Elton John and his husband David Furnish enjoyed a festive dinner at Oswald’s earlier this month, while Liz Hurley has been snapped here on a night out, as have Dame Joan Collins, Michael Caine and Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka.

Oswald’s attracts royalty of all kinds, too: from Queen Camilla, who joined a family party last month, to the Queen of Pop, Madonna, pictured at the venue last year.

Birley already runs Number 5 Hertford Street. But according to The Mail on Sunday’s Editor-at-large, Charlotte Griffiths, he decided to set up Oswalds in the hope of drawing a distinctively aristocratic crowd.

Posting a photo of herself in a bra and suit from her fashion line, the star shared a lengthy message, thanking David and her four ‘beautiful’ children for their ‘unconditional love and support’ as she reflected on her life.

The Spice Girl declared: ‘As I get ready to step into 50 (in heels, of course!), I feel so incredibly blessed to have reached this milestone.’

At 45 years old, Victoria Beckham feels like the best version of herself.

The entrepreneur and designer, who launched her namesake cosmetics brand, Victoria Beckham Beauty, this month, revealed that starting a makeup company in her mid-40s gave her more confidence than ever before. “There’s something really liberating about embracing who I am at 45 years old and owning it, feeling confident, feeling content. Doing beauty has really helped with that – it’s been very liberating,” Beckham said in an interview with Glamour UK.

She continued: “I want to spread the word that everybody should feel like the best version of themselves. To look after what you have.”

The British star, who launched her own eponymous fashion label in 2008, is no stranger to dealing with public scrutiny, especially in the age of the internet. But Beckham has become a pro at not letting any haters get under her skin.

“I feel very confident the [Victoria Beckham Beauty] product will speak for itself, as the clothes have,” she said. “I know everything I do will be scrutinized and that’s OK, but I don’t let it get in my way. I’m a very positive person. If you put out positive energy, that’s what you’ll get back.”

Victoria Beckham Beauty’s products were designed to be luxurious, clean, and marketed towards consumers through honest, minimally-retouched photos (Beckham insisted on keeping her wrinkles in the imagery, Glamour UK reports).

“What’s real and what’s not has become so blurred with Photoshop,” Beckham said. “I believe people want to see pictures that are real.”

She continued: “I want to tell people to own who you are. Yes, we – and I – have wrinkles, and that’s OK!”

At launch, the line includes creamy and pigmented eye shadow “bricks,” kajal liners and shimmering lid lustres. Beckham plans to introduce other categories, including lip and skin, to the brand soon.

These are the beauty products the designer swears by

As someone who notoriously eats the exact same thing every day to get her dewy complexion (it’s salmon) and rigorously works out for two hours a day (it’s true!), Victoria Beckham is clearly a creature of habit – and even more clearly, it works for her. So when she shared her daily beauty routine with Into the Gloss, we knew that it would be both rigorously tested and darn near miracle-working.

The clothing designer (who at the time was promoting her own Estée Lauder cosmetics line) walked through her entire product arsenal with Into the Gloss, from skincare to makeup and hair products. She says that as she’s aged, her beauty regimen has gotten less complicated, thanks to more settled skin and fewer wacky looks from her Spice Girls days.

“I used to have quite bad skin when I was younger and I was constantly covering up spots and things like that. Luckily, I don’t have to worry too much about that anymore. Over time, you learn what works for you,” she explains. “And, you know, I tried some interesting looks in the Spice Girls. At this point, I’ve done so many photoshoots and red carpets that I’ve learned so much about my beauty style by looking back at pictures of myself.”

Skincare

If you’ve noticed that Beckham looks just as radiant in her airport paparazzi photos post-flight as she does on the red carpet, that’s because she gives herself a mini-facial in flight. She cleanses her skin and puts on Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis Stem Cell Collagen Activator ($265) which makes her skin feel “so nice” in the “horrific” airplane air. Then she uses her very own Estée Lauder Morning Aura primer ($95, now out of stock) which she developed specifically to look refreshed when facing the paparazzi after a long flight. (Just one of the perks of having your own beauty line!)

As for her everyday routine, she starts with Bioderma makeup wipes ($9.90) which she wears actually work to take off long-lasting makeup. Then she follows it up with a rotating variety of cleansers, including Sarah Chapman’s Ultimate Cleanse ($75) and Lancer Skincare’s Method Polish ($75), the latter of which she tells the website is “grainy and abrasive” and is the best scrub she’s tried because “it really stimulates the skin.”

She follows that up with the Sarah Chapman 3D Moisture Infusion Mask ($84), a jade roller ($90) and La Mer’s Moisturizing Soft Lotion ($260) which she loves because it’s light enough to soak in before her foundation.

Makeup

Her number one go-to makeup product is her Estée Lauder Aura Gloss ($45, now sold out). She describes it like a lip balm but she uses it everywhere. “I’ll put it on top of my cheeks, on my eyelids, down the center of my nose, and always on this bow of my lip because it makes the lips look fuller,” she explains. “Also a little bit on my chin. Sometimes if I’m wearing something strapless, I’ll take a little bit, mix it with my moisturizer, and put it on my collarbone. You can do everything with it—it has this nice gold feeling that makes it a good highlighter.” (She also put it on models in her latest runway show.)

For days she’s just padding around the house, she puts on a tinted moisturizer from Sarah Chapman, Skin Insurance SPF 30 ($67). And for days she needs more coverage, it’s between Burberry Fresh Glow Foundation ($52), Cashmere Concealer ($40) and La Mer foundation ($110).

To finish off her signature look (contoured cheekbones with a smokey eye) she uses Estée Lauder Victoria Beckham Skin Perfecting Powder ($85), Estée Lauder Victoria Beckham Eye Kajal ($38) and Estée Lauder Victoria Beckham Cheek Crème ($60, all now sold out).

When it comes to fragrance, she says she doesn’t have a signature scent, and uses anything by Byredo ($150), but as for moisturizing cream, she loves Weleda Skin Food ($19). “The formula is so thick and buttery,” she says. “When I have a tan, I’ll mix it with coconut oil—the same you use to cook with—and cover my entire body with it. I suppose some people may not like the greasiness, but it helps me hold on to the color. And by the time I leave the house, I feel as if it’s really sunk in.”

She also posted two body-care products to her Instagram in December – the OSEA Undaria Algae Oil ($48), which she said she applies right out of the shower, and Kanebo Sensai bronzing gel ($34) to amp up one’s glow in the pasty winter months.

Hair

She admitted that she can’t do her own hair as well as her own makeup, and says she only lets her L.A. colorist touch her strands. And no one is allowed to touch her brows besides Anastasia Soare, founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills. So the products she uses daily on her own include a simple shampoo ($44) and conditioner ($46) by Oribe which she says smells “incredible.”

Even when she’s on the go, she makes sure that she packs with her Skinade’s ($150) travel-size flavored anti-aging collagen drink that can improve the appearance and feeling of your skin in as little as 30 days. A holy grail product in her beauty routine, she makes sure she doesn’t go a day without taking it. “My Skinade, which I make sure I take everyday. It comes in bottles that you can keep in the fridge, and it also comes in handy little travel packets.”

Victoria Beckham is sharing some beauty wisdom just in time for the holidays.

The Spice Girls alum, 48, explained she’s “always had a nose like this” as she denied plastic surgery rumors and discussed contouring with beauty mogul pal Charlotte Tilbury in a video for the celebrity makeup artist’s YouTube channel.

“People have also said that I’ve had a nose job,” Beckham said. “Never had a nose job. Always had a nose like this. It is the nose trick.”

She and Tilbury, 49, demonstrated the trick (also known as the “exclamation trick”) earlier in the video, using highlighter to draw an exclamation point down Beckham’s nose. “It just gives you a button nose, which you’ve got a gorgeous little button nose,” Tilbury told Beckham.

Beckham then gifted Tilbury the Matte Bronzing Brick (retailing for $58) from Victoria Beckham Beauty, which she swears by for contouring her nose.

The designer formerly known as Posh Spice credited her girl group era with sparking her passion for style and beauty as she spoke with Molly Sims for her Lipstick on the Rim podcast in October.

“I learned so much about those Spice Girl days … being on the stage and wearing a lot of makeup,” she explained in a PEOPLE exclusive clip. “And let me tell you, the more tired that the Spice Girls got, the more makeup we put on our faces.”

“It was always a dream for me to create a modern luxury fashion and beauty house, and so I knew I had to do that myself,” Beckham added.

Beckham has also been candid about her feelings on plastic surgery since having her breast implants removed in 2014.

Victoria Beckham is celebrating her daughter-in-law Nicola Peltz Beckham.

The fashion designer and Spice Girl, 49, shared a sweet birthday message to Nicola on Tuesday to mark her 29th birthday.

“Happy birthday @nicolaannepeltzbeckham!!! We love you!! Kisses xx,” Victoria wrote on her Instagram post. She also shared a funny throwback video of herself and Nicola dancing on the beach during their Bahamas vacation in December which was accompanied by the tune “Trouble” by Lindsey Buckingham.

The sweet moment featured actress Nicola — who was dressed in a black shirt, white shorts and sky-high wedges — dancing with her mother-in-law on the sand as the pair laughed together in time to the music.

Brooklyn and Nicola tied the knot in April 2022 after they first began dating in October 2019.

Victoria’s birthday tribute comes after she revealed her extensive morning care routine on Saturday. Wearing a white robe and towel on her head, the mother-of-four went makeup-free as she used several products, including the  Cell Rejuvenating Power Serum, from her Victoria Beckham Beauty brand for the Instagram video.

Back in December, Victoria caught up with Allure about all things beauty for a new cover story, in which she described a few of her favorite beauty products.

“I test everything,” she explained. “If you were to say, ‘What are the two items you don’t leave the house without?’ BabyBlade Brow. I’m obsessed with brows — my husband has never seen me without my eyebrows. And Instant Brightening Waterline Pencil to make my eyes look more awake.”

The fashion designer also added that makeup has always been her “thing” and art was “probably the only thing I was any good at in school.”

Victoria Beckham’s fashion show is always one of the most coveted tickets at New York Fashion Week. From the clothes to the front row cameos, the event is an all-around must-see. And one thing we look forward to (aside from David Beckham and the brood in the audience) is VB’s outfit.

This year the designer pulled a 180 and hit the runway in classic jeans and a white T-shirt. So when we caught up with her at her Estée Lauder fall collection launch, we had to ask, “Where does Posh buy her jeans?”

“I got those from a vintage shop. They’re just vintage Levi’s,” she told PEOPLE of the cropped blue denim she wore with a basic white tee for her finale bow. “On the lead up to fashion week you don’t really have the time to think about what you’re wearing because we’ve been so busy this week with the collection and the casting and everything else that goes with putting a big show together. It was just jeans and T-shirts for me this week.”

She finished the look with a pair of lavender pumps from her new collection, and maintains that while she has embraced flats, she’ll never give up her high heels.

“The shoes are great. They are so comfortable as well. You really can wear them all day because they’re not too high,” she shares. “What’s so funny is that people said that [I stopped wearing heels] because I think like most people I’ll have a day where I want to put a heel on and then I’ll wear trainers if I’m running around after the kids. I go between the two. Sometimes a flat sandal if there is nice weather.”

Aside from the chic heels and new clothes, Beckham’s models also hit the catwalk in her latest collection from Estée Lauder.

“I’ve learned so much over the years,” she shares. “I have a point of view and I wanted to create the key must-have items that every woman should have in her makeup bag, and I really think that I’ve done that. This is really only the beginning — there is so much more that I have to say. I’m very passionate about this. Everything has a point of view and it’s very different to anything else that is out there.”

Next, Beckham’s team used the Skin Perfecting Powder to “even out skin tones and closes the pores.” Beckham adds: “I’ve never found a powder quite like this. You can use it throughout the day without it getting too cloggy. It’s not too thick which is really nice.”

For the bright eye moment, the new dual-sided Eye Kajal was used with the lighter shade on the waterline. “It really opens out the eye and gives it a really youthful, fresh look.”

Lashes on Lashes on Lashes

“The mascara is like no mascara I’ve never used before,” Beckham shares. “It’s packed with fibers. You can use it on eyelash extensions as well, which is something that I’ve always struggled with. You can wash it off with warm water. It’s got a very nice wand. It’s very slim and easy to use. The amount of product you get on the wand is incredible. You can really get right into the root of the lash because of the shape of the wand. I hold it vertically to really paint the individual lashes and the bottom part of the eye.”
