Ferrari, until the Japanese GP, has arguably stationed itself as the second-fastest team. McLaren is close behind, striving to take over with the help of development plans. The ambition is not a far-fetched one for the Woking-based outfit, according to Sam Bird. The Formula E driver went on to predict that McLaren’s upgrades will be more efficient than Ferrari’s. Speaking on the latest episode of BBC’s F1: Chequered Flag podcast, Bird said,

“When we talk about the McLaren v Ferrari with regards to the upgrades, I quite fancy McLaren doing maybe a better job. The reason why is that, I feel like if you take last year, for example, McLaren had a clear view of where they needed to take their car. And they had a very methodical approach. When they brought upgrades, they worked. When Ferrari tend to bring upgrades, I feel like it’s a bit more scattered and they don’t always necessarily improve the car or make the improvements that they want.”

McLaren indeed turned its fortunes around through the course of the 2023 season. The Woking-based squad failed to meet deadlines on the car and had to field an undercooked car at the start of the campaign.

However, with each upgrade package, the MCL60 became quicker and more stable in the corners. By the end of the season, McLaren emerged as the fastest behind Red Bull, with Lando Norris being a podium regular.

2024 presents a different picture, though. Ferrari is not just arguably the second-fastest team but has also managed to significantly close the gap to Red Bull. On certain tracks, their drivers have given a tough fight to Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez as well.

McLaren will aim to replace Ferrari as the second-fastest team in Miami, though. That is because the American race will mark the first major upgrade package they will introduce. Until now, the Papaya team has only brought in minor changes.

    McLaren successfully tackles its weakness

McLaren, until the Chinese GP, faced two major issues with its car. One of those is the speed in longer and slower corners. The other is a lack of straight-line speed in race settings.

Given the way they have performed until now during the Chinese GP weekend, the issue of speed in longer and slower corners seems to have been fixed. That is what the qualifying and sprint qualifying results suggest.

However, we are yet to see if they have managed to tackle the race pace issue. With the main race just a few hours away, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will hope that the team have found solutions to tackle their race pace issues. If they don’t, then the engineers in Woking will have another task at hand while planning the Miami upgrade package.

    View post on X

Norris in particular will hope to deliver a better performance during the Grand Prix, having suffered a heartbreak when he threw away a potential win during the sprint race from pole position. The biggest challenge for him will remain constant, though. That is Red Bull and Max Verstappen.

Canelo Alvarez aimed a ruthless dig at Mike Tyson.

Canelo Alvarez absolutely rips into Mike Tyson for accusing him of disrespecting Mexican boxing

Canelo Alvarez did not hold back when he was asked about Mike Tyson following his damning comments over a proposed fight against David Benavidez.

Canelo, who is undisputed champion at super-middleweight, was briefly linked with a fight against Benavidez before opting to face Jaime Munguia.

The boxing superstar came face-to-face with the unbeaten 27-year-old in last night’s kick-off press conference in Los Angeles, California.

After the presser, the 33-year-old spoke to reporters on the red carpet and was asked about Tyson’s claim.

Tyson, who is set to face Jake Paul on July 20, accused Canelo of disrespecting the legacy of Mexican boxing by not agreeing to fight Benavidez.

“I can’t believe what I just heard,” the 57-year-old said.

“What’s wrong with Canelo? Is he afraid of losing? Doesn’t he want to give the fans the fight they want to see? Don’t you want to give the fans the fight they want to see?

“Do you not respect the legacy of the great Mexican champions who faced the best regardless of the money?” He asked. “This is a shame for boxing and for Mexico. If I were him, I would accept the fight with Benavidez and show the world that he is the best.

“But it seems he doesn’t have the courage to do it; It is a shame because he has a lot of talent, but he lacks heart.”

Well, Canelo has now responded, and he’s pulled no punches as he aimed a ruthless dig at the former world heavyweight champion.

Asked if he respects Tyson’s opinion after he called for him to fight Benavidez, the Mexican sensation ruthlessly replied: “I’d respect his opinion if he was sober.”

While Canelo holds the WBA (super), IBF, WBO, WBC and The Ring Magazine super-middleweight world titles, Benavidez is in possession of the interim WBC super-middleweight belt.

The American star boasts an undefeated professional record (28-0), having beaten the likes of David Lemieux, Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade.

But he’ll have to wait before landing a showdown with Canelo, who will return to action on May 4 against Munguia.

Sergio Perez in 2024 has hardly given a reason for anyone to complain. Except for the Australian Grand Prix, the Mexican race driver has always been on the podium, and even for Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix, he will start from the first row. Despite his strong performances so far this season, there have been rumors of him getting axed for 2025. And due to the same, Christian Horner is unable to understand why Perez is constantly written off.

“You guys have a tendency to write him off, but he’s doing a great job and I think that he’s coming this season with a new frame of mind and he’s relaxed, he’s driving the car really well and he’s not focusing on his teammate,” said Horner to Sky Sports, as per GPBlog.

In 2023, it was rumored that Red Bull may axe Perez, owing to his poor form. That school of thought has even continued in 2024, even though Perez’s performances are satisfactory so far. With Carlos Sainz available, the rumors of the Spaniard replacing Perez have also popped.

Moreover, there has been no update on Perez’s contract extension, as the current deal will run out at the end of this year. Thus, there is more than one reason for the F1 media to contemplate who will partner with Max Verstappen in 2025.

But with Perez hardly keeping a foot wrong, Red Bull would have no reason to sack him. Horner also explained how Perez’s decent performances so far have boosted his confidence. On the other hand, Red Bull surely doesn’t have any incentive to sign Sainz.

How Sergio Perez is perfect for Max Verstappen?

Over the last three seasons, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have formed a great camaraderie. Although there have been minor tensions in between, nothing surprising in the F1 realm. Till 2023, Perez used to think he could vie for the championship against Max Verstappen in the Red Bull cars that are very much oriented to the Dutchman.

But after repeatedly losing to Verstappen, as per Helmut Marko, Perez has accepted his deputy role at Red Bull. Therefore, the Mexican race driver has started performing well. Thus, such team stability can’t be achieved with two equally ambitious drivers.

With Sainz, there is likely to be a series of tensions that could compromise Red Bull’s ‘perfect results’, as the Spaniard would enter to vie for the championship. It’s reported that Sainz has been offered a three-year deal from Audi.

But regardless of Red Bull’s suitability, Sainz is currently the most sought driver on the grid. And it would be interesting to see where he would head after his last dance with Ferrari this year.

Tyson Fury has his say on Mike Tyson fighting Jake Paul.

Tyson Fury holds nothing back when making shock Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight prediction

Tyson Fury held nothing back as he gave a shock prediction for Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul.

Tyson is set to face Paul at AT&T Stadium on July 20 in a bout that will be aired on Netflix.

It will be the boxing legend’s first appearance since his exhibition against Roy Jones Jr back in November 2020.

As for Paul, he makes a swift return to the ring, having recorded a big win over Ryan Bourland earlier this month.

The match-up pitting Tyson against Paul has been widely condemned by fans and critics alike in the combat sports world.

UFC boss Dana White pulled no punches as he shared his honest thoughts on ‘Iron’ Mike coming back.

Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland destroyed Paul for facing Tyson in an astonishing rant.

Joe Rogan, however, has backed Tyson to beat Paul.

And Fury has echoed the same sentiment, giving a shock prediction.

The self-proclaimed ‘Gypsy King’ has supported Tyson returning to the sport and calls his against Paul an ‘even match’.

Speaking to The Stomping Ground, he said: “I think it’s fantastic for boxing.

“You’ve got a legend in Mike Tyson. You’ve got a YouTube boxer [Jake Paul]. He has come into the game and blew it up and he’s got millions of followers and millions of views and millions of eyes. Good, bad or indifferent. Some people love him, some people hate him.

“So, I think it’s a really good spectacle for boxing. Brings a lot of people to the game.”

Fury added: “Listen, who am I to say, ‘Oh, Mike Tyson shouldn’t be boxing or Jake Paul shouldn’t be boxing’, good luck to ’em. They’re both gonna make what I call a sh*t ton of money out of it. So, isn’t that what it’s about?

“[They’re fighting at] a great stadium,” Fury referenced AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

“It’d be fantastic for the guys both getting paid, both gonna put on a show. I just don’t know what’s not to like. Oh, okay, [Tyson’s] 57 years old, but he’s a former undisputed world heavyweight king, and [Paul] plays computers for a living and he’s come to boxing about a year ago. So, pretty even match.

“From being a kid on the Disney Channel to fighting Mike Tyson. Who wouldn’t want to do that?… People say, ‘Oh, it’s sh*t’, this, that and the other.

“But, I bet they still watch it. Who’s not intrigued?”

Eddie Hearn has responded to Francis Ngannou claiming he was ‘tricked’ ahead of his fight against Anthony Joshua.

Ngannou suffered a brutal second-round defeat to Joshua in their Saudi Arabia showdown earlier this month.

Joshua floored Ngannou twice before landing a devastating blow to secure a big win.

After the fight, the former UFC heavyweight champion made a revelation as he explained the reason behind his crushing defeat.

On Monday, he then claimed he was ‘tricked’ ahead of entering the ring against ‘AJ’.

“They come to the locker around 1 and Joshua [was just arriving around 1],” he told Ariel Helwani. “I’m like, ‘OK, we are fighting at the same time, how come I have a pickup time?’

“We received a schedule, an email, and then for some reason I was there at least one hour before. But for the fight, at least two hours beforehand. They do this kind of trick to get you tired. I was like cool, I was like, ‘Bro, it’s OK’.”

Hearn, who promotes Joshua, has hit back at Ngannou’s statement as he left a comment on Pro Boxing Fans’ post on Instagram.

“I’m not sure he has come round yet,” he wrote.

The Matchroom chief is clearly unhappy at the way Ngannou is conducting himself following his second defeat in the world of boxing.

Speaking after Joshua’s demolition job, the English promoter exclaimed: “You are looking at the baddest man on the planet. The No 1 heavyweight in the world.

“There’s a brilliant fighter down there in Tyson Fury. Please beat Oleksandr Usyk, because you will get the biggest fight of all time.”

Despite suffering back-to-back defeats following his UFC departure, ‘The Predator’ is still looking to pursue a career in boxing, admitting the sport ‘owes him something’.

As for Joshua, he could be in line to face the winner of the undisputed showdown between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk.

Boxing legend questions whether Mike Tyson and Jake Paul 'may have agreed' how their huge fight ends

Boxing legend Teddy Atlas has questioned whether Mike Tyson and Jake Paul have already ‘agreed’ on how their fight will end.

Paul, 27, is set to take on former world champion Tyson, 57, on July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The details of the fight, such as the rounds and weight, are yet to be determined – but the two have so far been vocal in their public exchanges ahead of the bout.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming showdown against Tyson – also known as ‘Iron Mike’ – Paul said: “I idolized Mike Tyson until the first time I met him 4 years ago…he called me Logan. Going to make sure he knows who I am real close and personal.”

Tyson has also had his say after taking to his personal social media to post a video of himself training, where he said: “You still wanna f*** with me?”

While anticipation is building amongst the two fighters and fans across the world, boxing trainer and commentator Atlas is hesitant to join the hype.

“Unless this is a WWE agreement, which I don’t know that it is – I never said this before because I think all these fights are legitimate, and they are and have been – but this one makes me wonder,” he said said on his YouTube channel (as quoted by Daily Mirror).

“I’m not questioning the integrity of Paul. In fact, I like his integrity. I like what I’ve seen in the guy.

    Mike Tyson and Jake Paul
    Mike Tyson and Jake Paul

“I’m just saying, if there was a time I would question it, this would be the time.

“I can’t see, unless Paul is that confident, that Tyson is too old now and he’s that good, because Paul has been getting more confident, and he does have a good right hand and does punch well with it and Tyson leads with left hooks.

“Maybe Paul thinks he can hit him with a right hand, I don’t know.

“All I know is that this is the first time I’ve said, ‘I wonder if there’s an agreement, because if there’s no agreement, Paul might be making a mistake. … I’m surprised Paul is taking this risk.

“Power doesn’t disappear even when you’re old. He’s still got speed in the combinations. He’s still got that style.”

There is no evidence or suggestion out there to support Atlas’ claims, however, and Paul and his management have already rubbished several conspiracy theory claims surrounding the fight – with this looking to be just one of many that we’ve seen as the fight edges closer.

Tyson was last in action back in November 2020, where he had an exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr. Paul was also in action on the same card, as he knocked out former NBA player Nate Robinson.

Francis Ngannou's new WBC ranking revealed after stunning Anthony Joshua knockout

Francis Ngannou’s new WBC ranking has been revealed after he was knocked out by Anthony Joshua – and it’s bad news for the former UFC star.

Ngannou was taking part in his second competitive professional boxing bout against Joshua on March 8, after a narrow split decision defeat to Tyson Fury in October.

As a result of that Fury bout, some pundits gave the French-Cameroonian fighter a chance of upsetting the odds against Joshua in Riyadh.

But the Brit showed his class with a dominant display, and knocked Ngannou down with a fearsome right hand in round one.

Joshua then floored Ngannou twice in the second round to win via knockout in incredible fashion, with his opponent briefly requiring oxygen after the fight before thankfully getting back to his feet.

Speaking on his Instagram account last week, Ngannou revealed he was ‘falling asleep and sweating’ in the locker room before the fight.

He also confirmed that he will return to boxing when the time is right.

But he will have to do so from a much lower starting point in terms of the rankings, with his new ranking now revealed after the Joshua defeat.

Ngannou is now ranked 24th in the WBC heavyweight rankings, dropping behind the likes of Joe Joyce, Dereck Chisora and Otto Wallin.

He was previously ranked as world number 10.

Despite his convincing victory in Saudi Arabia, Joshua had some classy words for Ngannou and his coach immediately after the knockout.

In a short conversation that was picked up by DAZN cameras, Joshua said: “You’re an inspiration. You’d beat a lot of people. Don’t leave boxing – don’t leave.

“Dewey [Cooper, Ngannou’s head coach] – don’t leave boxing, you know. This guy is the truth.

“If you [Ngannou] need anything, let me know. We’ll speak another time. I’d love to support your foundation – we’ll speak another time.”

Mike Tyson announces shock career decision ahead of Jake Paul fight that nobody saw coming

Mike Tyson has announced a major career change ahead of his upcoming fight with Jake Paul.

Tyson will return to the ring to face Paul on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in what will be the main event of a card that will air on Netflix.

The 57-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champion has not fought since drawing with Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition match in 2020, while his last professional bout came back in 2005 against Kevin McBride, when he was beaten inside six rounds.

It is yet to be confirmed if his fight with Paul, 27, will be fully professional, a non-judged fight with pro rules or merely an exhibition bout.

Tyson’s decision to return to boxing has divided opinion, with some boxing fans concerned for the former heavyweight champion’s wellbeing.

Undeterred, Tyson has posted several videos of his training regime ahead of the fight, in which he looks in peak physical condition for a man of his age.

He is seemingly giving the fight his full focus, announcing on Wednesday that his podcast – Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson – had come to an end. Check out the video below.

“Ladies and gentlemen, these are my final recordings of HotBoxin’,” said Tyson.

“I really enjoyed being a part of this journey and all the people that I met, the remarkable people that I met in interviews.

“And by now, for me, this is my next chapter in life. Please enjoy the following socials at Mike Tyson and MikeTyson.com for my next venture, please. I love you all.”

Tyson spoke to numerous high-profile guests on his podcast including Kevin Hart, Joe Rogan, Dana White, Tony Hawk, The Undertaker and Eminem.

His full focus will now on his upcoming bout with Paul.

Numerous high-profile names have already given their views on the controversial fight, including WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
