After sharing arguably one of the fiercest rivalries in F1 history in the 2021 season, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton seem to have put their past behind them and now seem to have nothing but respect for one another. In a recent interview, the Dutchman labeled the seven-time champion as “one of the greatest drivers ever“. As quoted by Deni on X (formerly Twitter), Verstappen said,

He (Hamilton) is definitely up there as one of the greatest drivers ever. I have no need or desire to deny that. Consistency is his key, and staying on top of his game. The way he has managed his championships is very impressive. He has stood up when he needed to and made the difference“.

However, it is not just Verstappen who holds Hamilton in high regard. The Briton has also praised the Red Bull driver on numerous occasions previously.

After Max Verstappen redefined dominance in F1 by winning a record 19 races in a single season last year, Hamilton explained in an interview how the 26-year-old and his Red Bull team had been “faultless“. The Mercedes driver believes that Verstappen “raised the bar” and achieved an unprecedented level of dominance.

Although several moments of controversy took place over the course of the 2021 season, the Abu Dhabi GP arguably featured the worst of them. The primary concern was the source of the controversy.

It was triggered by a decision made by race control rather than by a move pulled off by Verstappen or Hamilton on the track. Secondly, this contentious moment took place at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. And perhaps most importantly, the controversy proved to be the title decider.

How did the controversy help Max Verstappen win his maiden championship?

While there is no doubt that both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were arguably deserving champions because of the kind of season both drivers had back in 2021, the unfortunate reality is that there could only be one winner. Ultimately, it was the Dutchman who emerged victorious and won his maiden championship.

However, he did have immense luck go his way. Until race control made some controversial decisions, Hamilton had a comfortable lead in the race. Moreover, even Red Bull team principal Christian Horner had claimed during the race that his side needed a “miracle” if Verstappen were to win the championship.

The miracle came in the form of race control committing a “human error“. Soon after race control admitted their mistake, Hamilton fans expressed their frustrations. However, nothing they could do would change the result of the race or the championship.

Verstappen won his maiden title that season, much to the delight of his fans. On the other hand, Hamilton suffered a heartbreaking defeat, one that he has admitted pains him until today.

However, with over two seasons having passed since the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi GP, both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton seem to have left their past behind. While the two continue to be fiercely competitive on the race track, they definitely do seem to have a more amicable and respectful relationship now.

  • Mike Tyson believed he would destroy Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in their prime but lost to Ali

Mike Tyson believed he would destroy Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in their prime but lost to Ali

MIKE TYSON believes he would “no doubt” have beaten Tyson Fury or Anthony Joshua in his prime before unifying all the belts.

The American fan-favourite retired in 2005 but still reigns as the youngest heavyweight champion of all time at 20 years old.

The 53-year-old was asked by fans online whether a prime Tyson would have reigned as the undisputed world champion today, owning all four belts.

Tyson, who would need to beat Fury and Joshua to do so, replied: “Yes.

“Listen, if you’re asking me if I was 20 years old, Yes, there’s no doubt.

“They’re really good fighters and I respect all these skills. It would have been very tough fighting them.”

Tyson unified the WBA, WBC and IBF belts during his career but after twice losing to Evander Holyfield, in 1996 and then a year later, he never reclaimed the title.

However, he was recently crowned the winner of the World Boxing Super Series virtual tournament, beating Muhammad Ali on points.

Despite the online success amid the coronavirus pandemic, Tyson admitted he could never have beaten the Greatest if they were to have fought.

He told Yahoo Sports: “I know it’s a fantasy game. Most likely I would win the fantasy, I wouldn’t win the real fight.

“Ali’s the greatest there’s ever been.”

And Ali’s eldest son Jr agrees – insisting “street fighter” Tyson could “never hold up” to his iconic dad in the ring.

He said: “My father would have kicked his butt. Everybody says Mike Tyson would have kicked my father’s butt. I said no.

“Tyson can’t go the distance. He couldn’t go fifteen rounds.

“He’s not a boxer. He’s a street fighter. He’s a knockout artist. He can never hold up to my father.”

  • Mike Tyson knocked out grown men in sparring fights aged 12 and weighed 13st 5lbs of pure muscle with 20 INCH neck

Mike Tyson knocked out grown men in sparring fights aged 12 and weighed 13st 5lbs of pure muscle with 20 INCH neck

MIKE TYSON incredibly knocked out grown men when he was just 12, his former trainer has revealed.

But it was hardly surprising given the future heavyweight champion of the world weighed 13st 5lbs at that age with a neck that was close to 20 inches.

Iron Mike, who even now at 53 still has amazing speed and power, was born to fight, according to respected Teddy Atlas.

In an interview with RingTV.com, Atlas recalled the first time Tyson – who went on to win 50 of his 56 fights with 44 coming by way of KO – came into the gym.

And he said nothing could have prepared him for such a ferocious mix of natural ability and power.

He said: “As far as most pure, God-given talent, raw, from the earliest stage that you saw, it would have to be a 12-year-old Tyson, who was 190lbs but no fat.”

Atlas was one of the legendary Cus D’Amato’s pupils and he said Tyson – who plans to set up a cannabis farm on a Caribbean island – had to impress them both when he took to the ring.

    He did.

Atlas – who was famously accused of holding a gun to the head of a teenage Tyson – said: “He had to impress me and Cus. He had to box his first day with a 27-year-old man who was a professional fighter, and he was able to do that.

“You can’t put him in with kids to spar because there are none.

“So you’re hiring sparring partners and they’re men and he’s hurting them and knocking them out.

“Anyone who could be knocking out men when he’s 12, 13 years old is a pretty damn good puncher.

“He learned the technique to make you miss and catch you clean but power’s power and punchers are born not made.”

But what ended the Baddest Man on the Planet’s career was his “will” cracking before his body.

Atlas added: “What wasn’t strong was his will. That’s what cracked.

“His will cracked before his chin. He absorbed those punches and he took big punches before he got knocked out.

“He showed a chin to handle those punches at a very high level.

“His will wasn’t nearly as strong as his chin.”

  • Mike Tyson’s dream fight is Floyd Mayweather but heavyweight legend insists he would only win with ‘dirty’ tactics

Mike Tyson’s dream fight is Floyd Mayweather but heavyweight legend insists he would only win with ‘dirty’ tactics

MIKE TYSON has named his dream fight – but it’s one that will likely never happen.

The former heavyweight champion of the world has sensationally announced he will return to boxing at the age of 53.

Tyson has shown off an incredible body transformation during lockdown and says he will return for exhibition fights.

The one name being matched with his is old foe Evander Holyfield, who has also announced he will lace up the gloves again.

Holyfield is 2-0 up against Tyson, one of which was that infamous DQ victory where Tyson bit a chunk out his opponent’s ear.

But Tyson has one other name on his hitlist – and it fellow boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, who often teases his own return to the sport.

Of course the near seven-stone weight difference meant they never clashed as professionals and probably won’t in exhibition bouts either.

But Tyson still harbours that dream and believes if he ‘played dirty’ he could hand his fellow American a first ever loss.

Iron Mike once told Shobox: “Well, I would love to have fought him [Mayweather], I wish he was my weight.

We can never fight, of course, because of the weight difference, but I wouldn’t fight him the way they fought him.

“I would be mean, I would be dirty. Because you’d have to do everything to fight him because he’s just so good.

“It’s almost impossible to fight him clean. It’s just so hard to beat him. It’s really hard to beat him.

“The style he deploys — it’s really difficult to beat him in that particular style.

“Love him or hate him, he’s a hard man to beat. I would fight a guy like Floyd differently if he was a heavyweight.”

It’s not the first time Tyson has spoken about going at it against Mayweather.

The 53-year-old took a cheeky dig at Money, 43, as he insisted it would not even be a contest if they ever came to blows.

When asked about a street fight with Mayweather during an interview with GQ, Iron Mike said: “[I would] kick Floyd’s a**, there wouldn’t even be no match.

“[If] I was his size in the ring, he would outpoint me.”

Tyson retired from boxing in 2005 with an incredible record of 50 wins, six defeats and two no contests.

Mayweather retired 50 and 0 undefeated, his last win being against UFC legend Conor McGregor back in 2017.

  • Why Mike Tyson Wasn’t Allowed to Box in the 1984 Olympics And How Tyson Exacts His Revenge

Why Mike Tyson Wasn’t Allowed to Box in the 1984 Olympics And How Tyson Exacts His Revenge

The 1984 Olympic Games that caused heartache and anger for Mike Tyson.

Before Mike Tyson went on to have an outstanding professional boxing career, he had a dream. He had hopes of making the U.S. Olympic team back in 1984. That dream, however, was shattered when the hard-punching Tyson dropped a pair of bouts that prevented him from making the boxing team.

    Mike Tyson’s legendary boxing career

Mike Tyson didn’t let his failed attempt at making the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team back in 1984 derail his quest for reaching the top of the professional boxing ranks. Tyson’s pre-pro boxing days were littered with speed bumps which included the death of his mother and sister at early ages and several arrests by the time he was 13.

Boxing was a way to help Tyson cope with his problems. He boxed often and he boxed well. He made his professional boxing debut in 1985 and quickly rose to stardom by winning his first 37 fights. Not only was he winning, he was striking fear int his opponents. Of his first 28 fights, he won 26 of them by knockout.’

Tyson went on to become the youngest boxer to ever win the heavyweight title when he was 20 years old. Tyson eventually became the lone heavyweight boxer to capture the WBA, WBC and IBF boxing titles and hold them at the same time. He finished his career with a 50-6 record, winning 44 by knockout.

Tyson’s failed bid to make the Olympics in 1984

As an amateur fighter, Mike Tyson secured gold medals in 1981 and 1982 in the Junior Olympics and had visions of earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team in 1984. There as some serious competition, however, with names such as Pernell Whittaker and Evander Holyfield also vying for spots.

The U.S, Olympic trials were held in Fort Worth, Texas in 1984, and Tyson was up against Henry Tillman, another kid who had a criminal history and who had learned to box while in prison. Tillman won a 5-0 decision. Tyson was then chosen as Tillman’s ‘most worthy’ opponent for the Olympic box-offs at Caesars Palace a month later. Tyson would have to defeat him twice to make the Olympic cut. If Tillman won the first bout, it was over for Tyson.

Tyson lost a 4-1 decision. He stormed out of the pavilion and began taking his frustrations out on a tree. While Tyson was crying, his trainer Cus D’Amato consoled him. Tillman advanced and went on to win the gold medal in the Olympics.

    Tyson exacts his revenge

Mike Tyson made his professional debut on March 6, 1985, as an 18-year-old and cruised to a first-round TKO against Hector Mercedes. Tyson went on to win his next 36 fights before losing in a stunner to James ‘Buster’ Douglas on Feb. 11, 1990.

In Tyson’s next bout after the loss, on June 16, 1990, Tyson went face-to-face with Tillman in their first meeting since the Olympic trials. Tyson didn’t hold back against the man who prevented him from reaching his Olympic dreams. He knocked Tillman out in the first round in 2:47. Tillman wound up being a decent pro, going 25-6 in his career.

Tillman reflected on his time as a boxer, saying it was tougher to be an amateur than a pro. “I think amateur boxing is harder than in the pros,” Tillman said. “Where you fight every two or three months as a pro, amateur boxers fight as much as five times in tournaments.” He then said Tyson was better suited to be a pro. “Mike was a beast, period,” Tillman said. “He could fight at an early age. Some guys are great amateurs but didn’t do well as pros. It all depends on their styles and Mike’s was more suited for the pros.”
