PIT STROPS Inside Red Bull’s Christian Horner & F1 rival Toto Wolff’s toxic feud… & how wives Geri & Susie battle to keep the peace

IT’S a rivalry as fierce as that between the drivers on the track – and as the new Formula One season approaches it’s set to crank up a gear yet again.

But Red Bull boss Christian Horner and Mercedes chief Toto Wolff’s feud dates back to long before Max Verstappen clinched that controversial world title back in 2021.

Christian and Geri Horner have been rocked by allegations about his behaviour
This week Wolff couldn’t resist a dig at his rival – who is under investigation over allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” by a female colleague, which he denies.

The Austrian, 52, called for “transparency” amid the probe, adding that it has repercussions for F1 as a whole.

He said: “I think for Red Bull it started as an independent investigation, if this is done in the right way with transparency and with the rigour, I think that’s something that we need to look at whatever the outcomes are.”

Wolff and Horner are renowned for trading insults – often shown on the Netflix hit Drive to Survive, the new series of which drops today – and at times their wives Susie Wolff and Geri Horner have stepped in to help simmer tensions.

As both men try to focus on pre-season testing in Bahrain, we reveal how their feud has played out over the years – and looks to continue firing on all cylinders.

Red Bull’s beef with Mercedes can be traced back to 2014, when rule changes saw them emerge as the most dominant team on the grid.

Wolff was at the helm when the team – having made a triumphant return to F1 in 2010 – clinched its first world title with Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes won the Constructors’ title with a 296 point lead over Red Bull Racing.

At the time Horner was pushing for changes to the rules which would allow teams to keep developing their cars throughout the season, with no limits.

Rules stated teams could only change 92 per cent of their designs.

Horner’s pleas angered Wolff, who raged: “Nobody can really be in favour of an all-out engine war from 2016.

“No serious company would allow that to happen and none of the current engine suppliers could allow that to happen because costs would escalate totally out of control.”

A year later Horner was still banging the drum, claiming people would lose interest in F1 if the FIA made no changes to halt Mercedes, to which Wolff hit back: “Just get your f*****g head down, work hard and try to sort it out.”

Things came to a head in 2016 when Wolff phoned Vertstappen’s dad Joss to discuss Max’s aggressive driving following his crash with Nico Rosberg.

Horner was furious, stating: “It’s totally wrong. They’ve got their own business. To be meddling in other teams’… maybe he does that with Ferrari, but he shouldn’t do it.

“He’s got no right to tell Max how he should drive and conduct himself.”

Things really boiled over in 2021, with Wolff branding Horner a “windbag who just wants to be on camera” during a row over Red Bull’s so-called ‘bendy wing’.

He added: “It’s about being punchy – it’s easy to be punchy when you’re on top of the timesheet, but he should be a little bit more modest I think.”

    Christian Horner On Toto Wolff

It came after Horner warned Wolff to “keep his mouth shut” and “be careful what you wish for” after hinting Red Bull could decide to protest Mercedes’ flexi front wings, alleging they looked “a bit worse than ours”.

During the close-run season, Wolff seemed rattled, at one point telling Hamilton over the team radio following a sprint race: “F**k them all.”

Horner added fuel to the fire, adding: “We worked hard to get into this position. It’s the first time they [Mercedes] have been challenged. It’s interesting to see how people react when they are under pressure, when they are challenged.”

When Hamilton and Verstappen collided at the British Grand Prix, both bosses rigorously defended their drivers.

It led to a “heated exchange” between the two principals, according to Horner.

Tensions then reached fever pitch when Verstappen snatched the world title from Hamilton on the final lap in Abu Dhabi thanks to a controversial safety car decision.

Horner told Tom Clarkson on the F1: Beyond the Grid podcast: “It really permeated at Silverstone where suddenly there was an awful lot of dialogue from Toto to [then race director] Michael [Masi].

“Then he’s (Wolff) sending him an email, and then he’s coming up. And I thought: ‘Right, okay, I’m not having that, I’m going up.’

“I felt it was incredibly one sided that a team principal should not be able to lobby and influence the race director and with hindsight, Toto and I had a fairly heated exchange in Race Control.

“At that event, where Toto was obviously arguing his corner that his driver shouldn’t be penalised, and I’ve got a driver in hospital and the car taken out of the race and was obviously feeling pretty aggrieved by it.”

Horner claimed he was surprised by his main rival’s behaviour during the season, telling The Telegraph: “You could see that it boiled over in the garage next door on a few occasions.”

He admitted he enjoys winding up Wolff, telling the Guardian in October 2021: “The more Toto gets wound up, the more fun it becomes.”

Former Benetton driver Johnny Herbert called out the two bosses for their squabbling a month later, telling the Sunday Mirror: “I think many want to tell him ‘grow up’.

“They look like two eight-year-olds arguing in the schoolyard. One points to the other and says, ‘Look what he’s doing’.”

    Cheating claims

The following year Red Bull was accused of cheating after it was found guilty of breaching the budget cap in 2021.

Wolff made it clear he didn’t feel the team’s £5.5m fine and 10 per cent reduction on aerodynamic development time was a harsh enough punishment.

He quipped: “I think they [Red Bull] have done a very good job last year in having a car out there that was half a second or more quicker than anyone else.”

Meanwhile Horner was seen on camera telling his drivers: “[It’s]fun and games with Mercedes over all this cost cap s***. I mean it’s unbelievable how much s*** Toto says.”

At times the team principals’ respective wives, Susie Wolf and Geri Halliwell, have stepped in, in an effort to keep the peace.

The Mercedes principal admitted he “really regrets” how things got so heated between him and his rival, and recalled being accosted by Susie for his “regretful” behaviour during the 2021 season.

He told Formula 1 magazine: “Susie pointed that out to me very clearly.

“She said, ‘Why are you having these kinds of discussions? You’re trying to win, respect that. Even if someone goes in that direction, you don’t have to’.

“That’s called female social intelligence. We sometimes have too much hormones.”

In March 2022 it seemed like the pair had put their differences aside when Horner praised Wolff for opening up about his mental health battle.

He told Sky Sports: “All credit to Toto for having the confidence to talk out about his own personal issues.”

In November last year, a picture emerged of former Spice Girl Geri offering Wolff a comforting hug as her husband watched on.

Everyone appeared to be grinning in the snap, suggesting the women had potentially managed to broker a peace deal.

Damon Hill, a Sky F1 consultant, said on social media: “Its heartening to see a bit of a moment of mirth as Geri Horner gives Toto a consolation cuddle.

“Easy to laugh when you’ve just wiped the floor with the opposition. Harder to do when you’ve been royally thrashed.”

It was later revealed the jovial mood came about because Geri had actually slapped Wolff’s bottom.

Horner later told Sky Sports: “It was an amusing moment because I think my wife had just smacked his bum so hard, I think it took him a bit by surprise.

“You probably can’t even see my clenched fist, it’s out of shot there.

“It’s been a long season and there has to be competition on track but there still has to be respect.”

With Red Bull shrouded in scandal and Mercedes losing its number one driver to Ferrari next season, it will be fascinating to see how 2024 plays out.

Lando Norris’ long wait for an F1 race win came to an end earlier this month in Miami. He made the majority of the F1 community happy, and his family proud but this victory was dedicated to one woman in particular – his grandmother.

Norris’ grandmother is from Belgium, and on The Fast and the Curious podcast, he reveals that she isn’t too well. When he visited his sick grandmother two weeks before the Miami GP, he promised her that he would win a race.

“I promised her, that I would win a race. Not really knowing when, or if she would be able to see one. But still, I promised I would win a race, I said within a year.”, Norris added.

It did not take Norris long to fulfill this particular promise. The British driver admits that he didn’t know he would be able to, do so quickly but is thankful.

Norris’ grandparents are his biggest supporters, as he stated multiple times in the past. Last year, they admitted that they were fearful of not being able to see Norris stand on the top step of the podium. Less than a year later, their grandson has achieved his biggest milestone in F1 to date.

But Norris’ journey is far from over. While celebrating his victory with his McLaren team, Norris insisted that his next aim is to challenge for the World Championship.

Lando Norris labels bigger ambitions after maiden Grand Prix win

At the McLaren Technology Center, Lando Norris arrived to a raucous reception from the employees. They gave him a guard of honor, a hero’s welcome, and the Bristol-born driver responded by making exciting claims for the future.

Norris has now tasted victory and he plans to add more wins to his column before the season ends. Additionally, he issued a challenge to reigning three-time World Champion Max Verstappen, whom he defeated in Miami.

Norris also knows that McLaren is still not at the same level as Red Bull (Verstappen’s team), but is adamant that they will be able to challenge for the crown in 2025.

As of this season, the team is working hard to make sure that their good form continues into the first double header of the year- Imola and Monaco.

Lando Norris’ victory over Max Verstappen in Miami was aided by a strategic masterclass put forward by McLaren. Verstappen was unfortunate with the timing of the safety car and the damage to his car, but the pit stop that he went ahead with, was not in the plans.

The entirety of McLaren’s workforce is basking in glory. Celebrations are in full swing in Woking, and taking digs at Red Bull is an opportunity the team members don’t want to pass out on.

During a celebratory speech, one of McLaren’s team members said,

“We’ve got Red Bull to pit but they shouldn’t have done which is good”

These comments suggest that the strategists of the British outfit baited Red Bull and Verstappen into pitting early. Momentarily, it put Norris at a disadvantage, but when the Safety car came out later, Norris got a free stop.

The McLaren driver put on the hard compound tires and managed to be consistently faster than Verstappen. Towards the end, the 24-year-old’s win did not look to be under any threat whatsoever.

Norris coasted home to take the chequered flag in P1, finishing over seven seconds ahead of Verstappen.

The digs McLaren is taking at Red Bull are fine for team morale, as the squad looks to make winning a more regular habit. However, it could end up biting them back with Red Bull set to bring upgrades to the very next race in Imola.

Red Bull has answers to McLaren’s glory

McLaren triumphed in Miami, and it brought Lando Norris’ five-year wait for a race win to an end. The team brought upgrades to Miami which worked wonders, helping the Bristol-born driver achieve this feat but in the very next race, Red Bull will do the same.

Helmut Marko acknowledged that Norris is a threat for the future. However, come the end of the campaign, he expects Verstappen to remain World Champion. In a conversation with OE24, he revealed that his team will bring an upgrade to Imola for the Emilia-Romagna GP.

These upgrades will bolster Verstappen’s performance and the 26-year-0ld remains the favorite to resume his winning run next weekend. Additionally, McLaren will also be wary of Ferrari, who look to impress their home crowd as they too, will bring in upgrades.

Adrian Newey announced that he would leave Red Bull earlier this month, leaving the Milton-Keynes-based outfit with a huge hole to fill as F1 heads towards the regulation changes of 2026. Helmut Marko thought that Newey would head to Silverstone and help Aston Martin become a Championship contending team, but in a recent interview, the Austrian revealed that he changed his mind.

There are two teams Newey has been heavily linked to. One of them is Aston Martin, whose owner Lawrence Stroll hasn’t hidden his lofty ambitions. The other is Ferrari, arguably the sport’s most iconic team.

In a conversation with OE24, Marko stated that he misunderstood Newey’s intention. When asked if he sees Newey with a “green team”, the 81-year-old replied,

“I was apparently misunderstood. I would rather tap on red.”

By going with red, Marko all but confirms Newey’s desire to move to the Maranello-based outfit. There, he joins seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton who will also be a new addition to their 2025 roster.

Newey previously expressed his regret over not having worked with Ferrari and Hamilton. Next year, the Briton will get the opportunity to do both.

At the same time, reports of Red Bull’s dominance dwindling have also emerged. Marko, however, remains unfazed and trusts in the capabilities their existing members have.

Helmut Marko doesn’t foresee “technical slump” at Red Bull

Marko understands the role Newey played in making Red Bull successful and also admitted that the team will miss his inputs as the regulation changes loom. But, he trusts Red Bull’s technical team.

With figures like Pierre Wache still with the Austrian stable, Marko doesn’t see them struggling in the new era of Formula 1. Newey and Hamilton creating a formidable duo remains a possibility that many would savor and Red Bull could dread.

    Marko, however, said,

“The myth goes with Newey, but I don’t think we’ll have a technical slump because of it.”

The Red Bull advisor is a big fan of Newey, and hailed him as the best F1 car designer of all time. Nonetheless, moving forward, he wants his team to be focused on winning the World Championship, and looks forward to the internal peace within.

The longevity of drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso has become a celebrated factor of F1. Both drivers have been at it for decades and show no signs of stopping anytime soon. However, Max Verstappen doesn’t want to follow in their footsteps, as he clarified while appearing on The Fast and The Curious podcast. Per the Dutchman, he wants to do other things and enjoy life while still in his prime and not when he is 50.

Speaking ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Verstappen detailed how he had been racing internationally since he was 12. The 26-year-old always knew what his entire year looked like, with each week planned out to the T. Hence, the three-time world champion isn’t in favor of prolonging his career like Hamilton did.

“I do love racing a lot. I do love Formula 1 but I do think that at one point, for me, it’s enough.”, he said.

Furthermore, chasing a record eight world championships isn’t on Verstappen‘s bucket list. Having already won three world championships, the Dutch driver is happy with his achievements.

Verstappen never thought it was possible to be so successful in the sport. So, he has already exceeded his expectations. And now, all he is looking for is a bit more peace to spend more time with his friends and family.

Sim Racing would continue playing a crucial part in the life of Max Verstappen

Aside from F1, Max Verstappen spends a lot of his time doing sim racing. Not only does the Red Bull driver race himself, but he is also honing other drivers to be better in the realm. Hence, the venture is more than just a hobby for the #1 driver on the grid.

Owner of Team Redline, Verstappen often logs in for sim racing even a couple of hours before he has to race in real life. Hence, the Dutch driver believes it is more of a full-time thing and wants to dedicate more of his time to honing the sim racing world’s significance.

A man of simple taste otherwise, Verstappen doesn’t indulge in most other things. Leisure activities are also a rarity for the 26-year-old, who doesn’t watch much TV.

The most common thing for him to do on TV is watch other sports and nothing else. Rather than investing his time in regular television, the defending world champion prefers watching movies or series.

Everyone took part in Lando Norris’ maiden Grand Prix win celebration. Frederic Vasseur sprayed some champagne on him. Almost the entire grid also congratulated him either in person or via social media. However, only a handful made it to the post-race party in a Miami club including Max Verstappen. During this party, the Dutchman reportedly consumed 18 Gin and Tonics, according to a veteran F1 photographer.

Kym Illman often reveals an unseen side of the grid on his YouTube channel from watches to bags and everything else. So, with his ear to the ground, he reported the reigning champion’s drinks order during Lando Norris’ celebrations.

On his latest YouTube live, he revealed, “I can tell you that Max Verstappen, I’m told, had 18 G&Ts last night. Gin and Tonics! Eighteen! He was on fire. Good luck to him. He deserves to let his hair down.”

Max Verstappen relaxing so much during the celebrations is a once-in-a-blue-moon occurrence. Illman highlighted that by saying he deserved some downtime away from the track. Being part of the hectic and stressful F1 environment, the drivers tend to take a break. The 2024 calendar having 24 races is also contributing to increasing stress.

The drivers also need to adhere to a strict diet throughout the season and even before to maintain their physical health. The physically demanding nature of F1 leaves little to no room for slip-ups. So, the drinking spree is perhaps the Red Bull man just pouncing on an opportunity to enjoy.

The bender Lando Norris and Max Verstappen went on in Miami

Norris appeared to be intoxicated even before he could change out of his Papaya overalls as seen in Daniel Ricciardo’s Instagram post. The Australian made it evident with his caption, a part of which read, “And not sure if he is alive today but very happy for @landonorris on his first win”

However, this was just the start as soon after the race the pair of Norris and Verstappen were spotted at a club in Miami. The Dutchman was spotted throwing his hands in the air.

In fact, the win warranted such a celebration that his boss Zak Brown changed plans for Norris. The McLaren CEO informed the race winner they would stay back on Sunday night so he could celebrate instead of flying out to Georgia. This meant the Golf enthusiast would miss out on playing in a tournament he was supposed to take part in.

Max Verstappen ‘is not ready to commit to Mercedes because of one major concern’ – with his Red Bull future uncertain amid Christian Horner saga

The Formula One season has just begun and although there are still 17 races left till next year there have already been some major changes to the paddock for the 2025 season.

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz will make way for seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton at the Prancing Horse, while Red Bull’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey announced he would be departing the team in 2025.

It came in the wake of the Christian Horner saga, and while the Red Bull team principal was cleared by an internal investigation over allegations of inappropriate behaviour, Newey still decided to walk away from the Red Bull set-up.

The shift and movement along the grid seems to be far from over as Mercedes are still trying to lure champion Max Verstappen to join them, however the Dutch driver is reluctant to make the jump as he has concerns over Mercedes’ car.

Max Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2026 and although he is still dominating the field with Red Bull, the three-time champion is doubting his future with Red Bull amidst the fallout from the Horner allegations.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has made it clear he is interested in recruiting the talented driver to take him away from the turmoil he has experienced at Red Bull this year.

However, although Wolff’s offer may be tempting from a financial and PR aspect, the Austrian may struggle to convince the competitive Dutchman that he can produce a car that will allow him to clinch his fourth drivers championship in.

According to Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes can’t produce a car that the 26-year-old ‘would want to sit in’, which is a major factor for a driver who is eager to win more driver’s championships.

Although Mercedes dominated between 2014 and 2020, the Silver Arrows have struggled to produce a car to rival Red Bull since 2021.

Wolff’s men have been way off the pace set by Red Bull in recent years and currently sit fourth in the constructors’ championship, behind Ferrari and McLaren.

Following the shock announcement that long time Mercedes posterboy Lewis Hamilton would be leaving the team to join Ferrari in 2025, the Brackley based team only have one driver contracted for next season.

Wolff will be hoping he can find a replacement for Hamilton to team up alongside George Russell.

However the Austrian will be hesitant to make an hasty decisions if it is a possibility that Verstappen could be poached from Red Bull.

Speaking to the media after the Miami Grand Prix about the possibility of signing Verstappen next year Wolff said ‘There’s always plenty of meetings. I can’t really say about the second driver. I think we’ve talked about the possibilities. I want to be fair to these guys and not make it look like we are playing chess with humans, because we are not doing that.

Lewis Hamilton ‘has never really been happy’ with key Toto Wolff decision – with Mercedes star switching to Ferrari at the end of the season

Lewis Hamilton remains ‘unhappy’ with a key decision made by Mercedes principal Toto Wolff amid another difficult season for the British star, according to reports.

Any hopes of a fairytale final season between Hamilton and the Mercedes F1 team, before the seven-time world champion departs for rivals Ferrari next year, already look over as the team’s car continues to struggle.

The Silver Arrows are yet to win a Grand Prix this season, with Hamilton frustrated by his car’s lack of competitive pace, and remains frustrated with the team’s decision to replace his former team-mate Valtteri Bottas, as per GB News.

Hamilton was supported by Bottas during his career best stint of world title runs between 2017 and 2021 before Wolff decided to promote a young George Russell into his seat at the championship-winning Formula One garage.

Russell has been more of a threat to Hamilton’s position as the team’s star driver than his predecessor, Bottas, who is now driving for Stake F1 team.

Russell has finished above his team-mate in all but one of the six GP’s so far with Hamilton looking set to bow out his Mercedes career with no chance of sealing a record-breaking eight world championship crown.

‘To me, it’s still an unanswered question why he signed George to replace Valtteri because Valtteri was a very good team-mate to Lewis,’ said Formula One insider Peter Windsor on his YouTube channel.

Hamilton is set to join Mercedes’ rivals Ferrari at the end of the season in a shock move

‘Lewis has never really been happy with George as we’ve said from day one, because basically George is quicker,’ he added.

Hamilton will wave goodbye to Mercedes following 11-years at the German team bossed by Wolff following the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi after deciding to join Ferrari on a two-year contract.

His decision to make the shock move to the Italian side will see him partnered with French driver Charles Leclerc who similarly to Russell also has his own ambitions of becoming a world champion.

Hamilton expects the move to give him a better chance of winning another world title than what Mercedes can that would see him overtake Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher to become the sport’s record-holder for the most championship crowns.

In her interview with The Sunday Times, Victoria reflected on getting older. “The thing with aging is that it is what it is. I always remember Marc Jacobs saying to me when he turned 60 that it was better than the alternative of not turning 60,” she told the outlet.

“But generally I feel good about things,” she added. “I have better opportunities now than I did when I was younger.”
