Vasyl Lomachenko knocks out George Kambosos with brutal body shot in dominant comeback display

Vasyl Lomachenko knocked out George Kambosos to become the new IBF lightweight world champion on Saturday night in Australia.

Lomachenko has often been criticised for starting slow but against Kambosos he got off to a quick start before his 11th-round finish.

Lomachenko was too much for Kambosos

The Ukrainian let his hands go early with several fast flurries that snapped back Kambosos’ head as he advanced.

Meanwhile, the Aussie looked to push the pace and invest to the body.

At the end of the third, a furious exchange had the crowd on their feet as they closed out a close round in style.

But by the fourth, Lomachenko looked to have gotten into his rhythm as he darted in and out of range, landing well-timed counters.
Boxing promoter Frank Warren predicts Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk will be similar to Fury’s second fight against Deontay Wilder

Kambosos’ work rate slowed down significantly in the fifth round as Lomachenko began to make good use of his feints.

At the halfway stage, Kambosos had only landed 10 per cent of his shots while Lomachenko was closing in on a 40 per cent success rate.

Through seven rounds it was hard to make a case for Kambosos winning more than one frame.

Besides the odd clubbing right hand and that exciting exchange in the third, Kambosos was struggling to land anything of note.

Despite the former unified lightweight champion’s corner urging him to do something different, nothing changed.

Lomachenko continued to make Kambosos miss and then make him pay, effortlessly changing angles and punishing his opponent as he lunged in.

As they entered the championship rounds, Kambosos’ face was a bloody mess.

But to his credit, he remained on his feet.

That did last for long though.

In round eleven, a brutal body shot decked Kambosos.

He made his way to his feet but was instantly sent tumbling back down to the canvas by a left uppercut to the gut as the towel came flying into the ring.

Lomachenko is now a four-time world champion across three weight divisions and, at age 36, showed he’s still got it on Saturday night.

Speaking in the immediate aftermath, he said: “Today I am again world champion and this world title for my father.

“I want to say a big thank you and show my appreciation to him.

“He trained me, he built me and he deserves it. This belt is for my father.”

The 36-year-old let his hands go early with several fast flurries that snapped back Kambosos’ head as he advanced.

The Australian home favourite gave a valiant effort, but was ultimately overmatched.

In round eleven, a brutal body shot floored him and Lomachenko quickly secured the finish by downing Kambosos once again.

Loma is now the IBF lightweight world champion – and a four-time champ across three weight divisions.

Davis holds the WBA crown and is seemingly looking to unify in the coming months.

A boxing fan posted on social media during the fight: “Gervonta Davis would never fight Vasyl Lomachenko.”

To which Davis replied publicly: “He’s after Frank. Let me get Frank first.”

The ‘Frank’ he is referring to is of course Frank Martin – his opponent on June 15.

This vow from Davis has excited many boxing fans, but infuriated Shakur Stevenson, who has himself been calling for a fight with Tank but been denied by the fact they are represented by different promoters/advisers.

As Lomachenko has also spent his career with the same promoter as him, Stevenson replied to Davis by saying: “He’s on the other side tho.”

Davis responded by suggesting Loma is actually now a free agent.

In the end though, Stevenson tweeted: “They [are] trying to freeze me out. F*** all them, Floyd [Mayweather] told me bout all these n***as.”

‘He needs to make it messy’ – Tyson Fury advised to risk referee’s punishment with tactics in Oleksandr Usyk undisputed fight

Tyson Fury has been urged to use a ‘messy’ tactical plan to beat Oleksandr Usyk.

The ‘Gypsy King’ is set to face the sternest examination of his career to date when he takes on undefeated Usyk for the undisputed world titles on May 18 in Saudi Arabia.

Fury holds a significant size advantage over his rival, standing at 6ft 9ins in comparison to his rival’s 6ft 3ins frame, and will be expected to use it as a key for victory on the night.

And British star Denzel Bentley, who was speaking to raise awareness for Steel Warriors’ anti-knife crime campaign, insisted Fury could toe the line of being deducted points if he exploits his advantages.

He told talkSPORT.com: “Fury cuts quite easily so I don’t think anything will happen because of the cut in sparring. If he is going to get cut, he will get cut anyway.

“It’s a good fight between the two, Fury has more of an advantage but Usyk is an excellent boxer.

“He has great movement and he’s fought some heavy guys and he’s managed to outbox them.

“His strengths in this fight are the fact he is a heavyweight that is happy to box and move around.

“Fury’s going to find trouble getting in but when he does he is going to lean, hold and make it messy.

“And if he can do that, I’m going to go with Fury if he can make it messy if the referee allows him to and doesn’t punish him.

A win for the Brit will see him make history and become the first undisputed king of the division in the four-belt era.

The WBC champion is looking to make improvements after his tough win against Francis Ngannou in October 2023.

He has already made a remarkable transformation and looks in frightening shape going into the fight.

His promoter Frank Warren has even claimed it is the best he has been in during his 15-year professional career.

He said during an interview on talkSPORT Fight Night: “He’s in tremendous shape not just physically but mentally.

“I’m confident we are going to get a vintage performance, I spoke to him during the week.

“Physically I have never seen him look so well. The worry was going straight into a training camp was that he’d peak too soon.

“He has worked really hard so that he is in his best nick on May 18.”

Fury vs Usyk: What has been said?

Frank Warren expects Fury to put on a clinic against Usyk.

“It’s the best shape I’ve seen him in” Warren told talkSPORT Breakfast on Friday.

“I know mentally, which is the most important thing, he’s really up for this fight.

“Usyk, he’s beaten every Brit he’s been in with. He beat Tony Bellew, he stopped him, knocked him over. He beat AJ twice. So, he’s used to getting in there with big guys.

“AJ was a much bigger guy, but I just think Tyson is a totally different type of boxer. He can adapt and he is a really, extremely good ring craftsman. I see him stopping Usyk, that’s how I see it working out.

“One thing about Usyk is he doesn’t like shots to the body. That’s a fact.

“And he’s had a little bit of a moan about that to the referee and he’s always complaining to the referee.

“I think it will be like the second fight he had with Deontay Wilder where Tyson got Deontay Wilder’s number and just absolutely took him apart.

“I can see him doing the same thing here.”

But Tony Bellew believes the old version of Fury would fare far better against Usyk than the current iteration.

Speaking to Simon Jordan and Jim White on Thursday, Bellew said: “I think Tyson Fury stood the best chance of beating him when he was with his uncle Peter Fury because that’s when he was an unorthodox, big, awkward fighter who used his size and his attributes to his advantage.

“Now, he’s this fighter that loves to press fighters and look for a knockout under the brilliant SugarHill Steward at the Kronk.

“He’s a different fighter now, he’s someone that looks for the knockout and that’s music to Oleksandr Usyk’s ears.

“I know because I’ve been in there with him, the boy is exceptional at what he does.

“Don’t get me wrong there is another side to that coin.

“Tyson Fury could get on top and he might be too heavy but in my opinion and from my experience, Oleksandr Usyk is going to win wide on points.

“We have to put this into context, if Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury were the same size, this fight wouldn’t even be up for debate.”

Sydney Sweeney to play trailblazing boxer nicknamed ‘female Rocky’ who even outshone Mike Tyson

The next big knockout boxing film has been announced.

Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney will feature in an as yet untitled sports biopic about the life of boxing champion Christy Martin – dubbed ‘the female Rocky’ by the film’s producers.

Christy Salters Martin was a trailblazing boxer who paved the way for female fighters, becoming the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Christy was a superstar in the 1990s and held the WBC Super Welterweight Championship in 2009.

Martin also stole the spotlight away from a prime Mike Tyson on his undercard in 1996 against Deidre Gogarty, gripping fans in a fight which Sports Illustrated said had ‘more action and better boxing’ than Tyson’s fight with Frank Bruno.

She was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and inspired Laila Ali to follow her father, Muhammad, into the squared circle.

However, Martin’s personal life was fraught with tragedy and trauma and her life transformed in 1989 when she met her manager, and later husband, Jim Martin.

Their toxic relationship was highly publicised and deteriorated as Jim Martin became more vindictive – recording Christy in compromising positions and situations, reading her emails and texts and belittling her intellect and appearance.

Christy was stabbed multiple times and shot by her ex-husband whilst sitting on their bed at their Florida home in Apopka on a Tuesday evening in 2010.

He was subsequently found guilty of attempted second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

    Martin later remarried.

In the years after the sickening attack, she suffered with PTSD and did not enjoy going into the shower for fear of being watched and even jumped in fear when her wife, Lisa Holewyne, pulled out a knife to chop food.

The duo married in 2017, but actually fought in 2001 on the undercard of Lennox Lewis’ rematch with Hasim Rahman at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Martin now promotes fighters after trying, yet just failing, to reach 50 career wins before retiring in 2012.
Denzel Bentley warns Mike Tyson that his lifestyle could catch up with him in his upcoming fight as Jake Paul is in his ‘physical prime’
Sweeney will have big shoes to fill when she steps into the role but her experience in boxing and MMA means she’s well prepared.

The actress told Deadline: “I grappled and did kickboxing from 12-19 years old. I’ve been itching to get back into the ring, train, and transform my body.

“Christy’s story isn’t a light one, it’s physically and emotionally demanding, there’s a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.”

She continued: “Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes, and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse.

“I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her.

    “It’s powerful, and emotional.”

Scott, a former professional fighter who now trains former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder as well as his other half, said Abdo is not far from a debut in the ring, but it could be at the back end of 2024 and is unlikely to see her give up her presenter gig.

He told Casino Online In: “Kate has been offered some Misfits action, the dates have to line up. We all know who will train her for it.

“It’s something we’re going to take on when the time’s right, most likely it won’t be as early as this summer, but look out for it.

“She can really fight. She’s technically very good and has a great work ethic.

“Technically her base is very good and she throws strong combinations.

“She’s knowledgeable about boxing because of her job.

“She’s very interested in putting the skills she’s learnt from her partner into practice and I’m backing her.

Thierry Henry and CBS panel left in shock after discovering what Kate Abdo was doing back in 2007
She has also worked with boxing promotion Premier Boxing Champions, in addition to hosting squared circle shows for streaming service DAZN.

Now she has gained even more notoriety for her role as chief presenter on CBS Sports’ coverage of the Champions League.

KSI’s Misfits Boxing label has offered opportunities to a whole host of celebrities who are able to showcase their talents, at a lower level to the professional ranks of the sport.

Abdo has spoken herself about the opportunity to fight, and she even opened the door to a match-up with reality TV star Katie Price.

She said: “Why not? Listen, I’d fight anybody. I’d fight anybody they put in front of me.

“I just haven’t watched a bunch of Misfits so I just don’t know honestly what’s a fight that makes sense.

“But yeah, if I got to do a couple of months in camp in LA before I had to fight, yeah I’d be down.”

And if she can keep Micah Richards and Jamie Carragher in check then surely she can handle anyone who is put in front of her.

They had initially been scheduled to duke it out on February 17 but their fight was pushed back by a month after Fury suffered a cut in sparring.

When the news broke, unsubstantiated rumours began to swirl around boxing’s rumour mill that Fury had been having issues in camp prior to the delay.

However, Fury silenced his critics by uploading a picture of himself looking in tremendous shape.

And it appears he is still in cracking condition judging from his latest physique update.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, nine days out from fight night, Fury uploaded a shirtless snap that wowed his followers.

Reacting to the post, one fan wrote: “Fury got abs and everythin,g will be an interesting fight.”

Another commented: “Shape of his life.”

A third added: “Fit as f*** ya big dosser.”

Someone else remarked: “Best shape I’ve seen you in mate.”

Fury put on a dismal display in his last outing against Francis Ngannou in October, narrowly edging a decision against the boxing novice.

The overriding narrative in the immediate aftermath of the crossover clash was that Fury had underestimated Ngannou and hadn’t trained properly.

But it appears he has learned from his mistakes heading into the Usyk showdown with all of the word coming out of his camp suggesting that he has left no stone unturned in training.

Later on Thursday, Usyk took to Instagram to respond.

He posted a picture of his own impressive physique after wrapping up his training camp.

Usyk captioned it: “The hard work is done.”

Former super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has suggested Fury could struggle against Usyk despite his remarkable ripped shape.

‘I’m not sure if (Fury coming in light) is a good thing to be honest,” Froch told Fastest Online Casino.

“That weight allowed him to bully Deontay Wilder, lean on him, tie him up and just have his own way.

“When it gets on top for Fury, when he’s under pressure, he’s able to sit back, get hold of the back of his opponent’s neck, lean on him and use his body weight to get himself out of trouble.

“If he’s losing weight and he’s slimmer, he could struggle. I’d like to see him perform at a slimmer weight.”

‘He’s a different fighter’ – Tony Bellew claims Tyson Fury stood a better chance of beating Oleksandr Usyk before making two major changes

Tony Bellew believes the old version of Tyson Fury would fare far better against Oleksandr Usyk than the current iteration.

WBC champion Fury has undergone a massive stylistic overhaul over the last couple of years.

Fury has changed his style and his trainer since beating Klitschko
    2

‘The Gypsy King’ broke onto the world stage by comprehensively dismantling Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 to claim the WBA, IBF and WBO titles.

Under the watchful eye of his uncle Peter Fury, the slick Brit outboxed and outsmarted Klitschko with his awkward and elusive point-fighting style.

Yet in recent years, the way Fury goes about his work has changed drastically.

Since linking up with SugarHill Steward in 2021, he has become more of a front-foot fighter.

Instead of jabbing and moving, the Mancunian now prefers to set his feet and enforce his will.

This worked brilliantly in his second and third fights with Deontay Wilder where he was able to nullify ‘The Bronze Bomber’s’ earth-shattering power by putting him on his heels.

However, Bellew believes Fury’s new style will play right into Usyk’s hands when they duke it out for undisputed supremacy on May 18.

Speaking to Simon Jordan and Jim White on Thursday afternoon, Bellew said: “I think Tyson Fury stood the best chance of beating him when he was with his uncle Peter Fury because that’s when he was an unorthodox, big, awkward fighter who used his size and his attributes to his advantage.

“We have to put this into context, if Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury were the same size, this fight wouldn’t even be up for debate.”

Bellew knows all too well just how good Usyk is.

The Liverpudlian fought him back in 2018 during the Ukrainian’s cruiserweight days.

Despite a promising start, Bellew eventually came unstuck and was caught with a vicious one-two that left the Brit slumped unconscious against the bottom rope.

Now Usyk is vying to become a two-weight champion following in the footsteps of Evander Holyfield, who lost to the last undisputed heavyweight king, Lennox Lewis.

Lewis will be waiting with open arms to welcome the latest addition to the club.

And the former division leader has insisted he believes Fury will be the next to complete the feat by winning on points.

“I believe that Tyson Fury has great attributes, he’s tall, he can box out of both stances, he can go forward,” he told talkSPORT’s Spencer Oliver.

“Right now to me it’s difficult to beat a bigger guy so I’ll always say the bigger guy has the advantage.

“I think Tyson Fury on points, but I’m not counting out Usyk.”

‘He’s not gonna get the fat Tyson Fury’ – Lennox Lewis warns Oleksandr Usyk he will face Gypsy King on top form after ‘wake-up call’

Lennox Lewis has told talkSPORT that Tyson Fury will be at his best against Oleksandr Usyk next week.

The Gyspy King was called into question by many fans and pundits, including Lewis, following his lacklustre last performance against Francis Ngannou in October.

However, boxing’s last undisputed heavyweight world champion believes that Fury will become the next undisputed king on May 18.

“Tyson Fury’s not no easy fight for anybody,” Lewis told talkSPORT’s Boxing YouTube channel.

“He’s elusive, he moves well, he boxes from both sides. For any boxer it’s gonna take a while to figure out.

“Also, the height difference is a problem, 6ft 9ins, it’s not an easy fight for anybody.

“That was just basically a wake-up call for him.

“A wake-up call to say, ‘Hey, get in shape, this guy hasn’t had any fights and you let him real close to you.’
Boxing legend and former lineal champion Prince Naseem Hamed gives his prediction for Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk
“So I think mentally that kind of bothered him for a bit, because if you look at him now, he’s in great shape.

“Weeks before the fight, he’s in great shape.

“That’s telling me that he’s taking the fight serious and we’re gonna have a great fight…

“It was a wake-up call for him, he wasn’t as serious as he should’ve been for that fight.

“He actually needed that to wake him up.

“I gave him heck, a lot of people gave him heck, and now he’s focused.”

Ringside footage shows Vasyl Lomachenko’s sickening body shot knockout and George Kambosos’ face says it all

Vasyl Lomachenko recorded his first stoppage in three years on Saturday night and it did not disappoint.

The last time Lomachenko closed the show inside the distance was all the way back in June 2021 when he knocked out Masayoshi Nakatani with a flurry of shots in the ninth round.

But this weekend against George Kambosos he returned to his spiteful best as he stopped the Aussie to the body in the 11th round to claim the IBF lightweight title.

Lomachenko had been in complete control throughout the contest and began to turn the screw in the championship rounds.

Most of his early work had been to the head but in the later frames, he started to invest to the body which paid off late in the 11th stanza as Kambosos was sent crashing to the canvas after eating a left uppercut to the gut.

To his credit, Kambosos made his way back to his feet.
Tony Bellew believes Tyson Fury stood a better chance of beating Oleksandr Usyk before making two major changes
But he was instantly sat back down by another sickening shot as the towel came flying in.

Ringside side footage shows just how clean the shot was while you can clearly see Kambosos let out a cry of distress as it lands.

Lomachenko is now a four-time world champion across three weight divisions and, at age 36, showed he can still mix it with the very best.

Taking to the mic in the immediate aftermath, an emotional Lomachenko said: “Today I am again world champion and this world title for my father.

“I want to say a big thank you and show my appreciation to him.

“He trained me, he built me and he deserves it. This belt is for my father.”

He continued: “My plan was to adjust to my opponent. This is what I did in the fight.

“Toward the end of the rounds I needed to finish strong. In the last three rounds, I was trying to find his body.

“We trained hard for this moment. I want to thank my opponent. He is a strong man and a true warrior.”

Kambosos then gave his reaction to the first stoppage loss of his career.

“I’m a tough Aussie b******. I’m the mould of Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward,” he said.

“We don’t want to take easy fights we step in with the best, look at my track record.
