Boxing legends have been voicing their opinions on Tyson Fury’s fight with Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday night – and the views are split.

Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight world champion of the four-belt era thanks to his split decision win over Fury, scoring 115-112, 113-114, 114-113.

Billed as the Ring of Fire, this gutsy showdown in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was arguably the biggest of the 21st century.

Fury lost his spotless record of 35 wins without defeat and though he claimed he wanted to activate the rematch clause, the reaction to his prospects has been mixed.

Lennox Lewis, the former undisputed champion until he retired in 2004, wrote on X: ‘Fury will learn from this and he’ll be back! Losing is also part of the game, it’s how you respond to a loss that makes all the difference.’

Gervonta Davies said: ‘One good round doesn’t win a fight,’ likely referencing round nine, where Usyk had Fury wobbling and almost counted out after a devastating flurry of blows.

However, Johnny Nelson thinks this could be the end for Usyk. He told Sky Sports: ‘Tyson’s team will have serious conversations about motivating him after this and get his mind back.

‘Don’t be surprised if Tyson walks away from this.

‘What more can he do? How can he improve from that? This defeat would have done his head in and his heart in.’

Fury might have some choice words about that take and will know exactly how he can improve – beating Usyk in October.

After the fight, he expressed his desire to have a rematch and told Prince Turki to ‘show me the money, baby’.

Manny Pacquiao would like to see a second showdown. ‘Congratulations Usyk on becoming the first Undisputed Heavyweight Champion in 25 years! Amazing fight from both Fury and Usyk. Fights like these are worthy of a rematch,’ he wrote.

Terence Crawford said: ‘Man y’all better put some respect on Usyk man. He definitely a candidate for #1 P4P fighter in the world. I’m no hater. He beat the man that beat the man in a bigger division, giving what he’s already done. Salute brother!’

Barry McGuigan thinks Fury has declined. He told Sky Sports: ‘Tyson is starting to drop. His ability to take a shot isn’t as good as it used to be, his powers of recovery aren’t as good as they used to be and he’s getting older.’

Meanwhile, Conor McGregor advised Fury to steer clear of a rematch.

‘A mad hiding! What next, who knows. Usyk is incredible. He has beat both soundly [Fury and Anthony Joshua],’ he wrote on Instagram.’

‘Whatever moves towards Tyson AJ I am for. If Fury wishes to go a second try at the wheel, AJ had two attempts so why not. Tall ask. Not impossible also. If not, AJ Usyk  last hoorah, and then win lose or draw go Tyson AJ.’

It was a tale of two halves at the Kingdom Arena, after Fury dominated the opening rounds before Usyk came back to control the fight with a flurry of punches in the ninth round leaving the Gypsy King floundering

After the final round, there was mutual respect between the two fighters who exchanged kisses and hugs as they awaited the result.

Usyk extended his record to 22 wins in 22 fights, with 14 knockouts, and he could have had another had the bell not saved Fury in the ninth round.

However, Fury’s mood soured when Usyk was named the victor with the British fighter telling an interviewer that ‘people are siding with Usyk because of the Ukraine war’.

Opetaia, 28, reclaimed his cruiserweight title in Riyadh on the judges scorecard but was forced to hang on in the latter rounds with his veteran rival coming on strong in search of a decisive knockout.

The Australian, who defeated Briedis on the Gold Coast to first win the title in 2022, was hospitalised with a broken jaw after that bout and once again visited hospital after his second bout against the Latvian.

And in the early hours of Sunday morning, Opetaia and Briedis both received medical attention, and they each saw the funny side of being back in hospital together.

Fans claim John Fury is ‘nowhere to be seen’ following Tyson Fury’s loss to Oleksandr Usyk… after his chaotic role in the build-up to the heavyweight world title fight in Saudi Arabia

Fans have claimed John Fury is ‘nowhere to be seen’ after Oleksandr Usyk beat his son Tyson to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world in Saudi Arabia.

Usyk was announced as the winner on a split decision verdict on Saturday night following the 12-round contest in Riyadh.

The judges scored the bout 115-112 Usyk, 114-113 Fury and 114-113 Usyk, as the 37-year-old secured all four heavyweight belts.

Boxing fans have been quick to highlight John Fury’s role in the Gypsy King’s camp following the first defeat of his professional career.

Fans suggested that his presence distracted from tactical advice being offered by his coach Andy Lee and trainer SugarHill Steward, costing his son the fight.

One fan wrote: ‘Fury’s corner consisted of 2 incredibly intelligent boxing people in Sugar Hill and Andy Lee trying to impart some astute tactical game plan, only to be repeatedly drowned out by John Fury shouting “Use the jab, we’re fighting men”…’

‘John Fury shouldn’t be anywhere near this, constantly over talking 2 guys who actually know what they are talking about,’ another added.

‘One thing is certain though, Tyson Fury needs to keep John Fury out of the training camp, the build up and especially out of his corner for the next fight!

‘The man is a huge hindrance and distraction to the team as a whole,’ claimed a third.

A clip had showed Steward offering Fury advice ahead of the final two rounds of the fight, saying ‘Don’t cross your god damn legs, be ready to punch, before adding ‘Don’t be afraid to slide in, quit pulling back or you’ll get caught’.

John Fury could also be heard offering advice to his son, repeatedly saying ‘light punches, light punches.

He was also heard talking over Steward telling Fury to ‘box and move’, while Fury was told by his corner that he was winning the fight.

A fan claimed John Fury’s comments contradicted Steward’s tactical advice, potentially adding confusion for Tyson Fury ahead of the final rounds.

‘John Fury was basically contradicting what Sugar Hull was saying in the corner telling Fury to box and move and throw light punches after Hill told him to take the fight to Usyk and throw power shots,’ on fan wrote.

‘Embarrassing corner sideshow. That’s not how you win big fights.

Another commented ‘Steward needed t kick John Fury out of the corner, too many cooks and all that… John Fury isn’t even a decent cook. Embarrassing.’

As well as being a vocal presence in Tyson’s corner during the fight, John Fury also caused controversy in the build-up to the undisputed world heavyweight title showdown.

The 59-year-old headbutted a young member of Usyk’s camp in the Riyadh Hilton Hotel lobby on Tuesday, coming away with a bloodied face.

Boxing fans had called for Fury Snr to be disciplined severely for the headbutt on a member of the Ukrainian’s entourage.

The 35-year-old claimed he would have changed his approach had he been advised by his trainer SugarHill Steward or his father John that he was trailing Usyk in the latter stages in Riyadh.

‘I’m not a judge and I can’t judge a fight while I’m boxing it,’ Fury said.

‘If they’d said to me before the last round that I was down I would have gone and tried to finish it but everyone in the corner believed we were up.

‘All I had to do was just keep boxing and keep doing what I was doing and I was getting it.

‘I’m not going to cry about it, I’ve had plenty of victories.

‘I was having a lot of fun, I was playing around, I had my hands around my back, I was enjoying it.’

Fans have also claimed multiple voices in Fury’s corner during the fight may have contributed to his defeat, with Steward and John Fury offering different advice.

A clip had showed Steward offering Fury advice ahead of the final two rounds of the fight.

Fury’s trainer could be heard saying ‘Don’t cross your god damn legs, be ready to punch, before adding ‘Don’t be afraid to slide in, quit pulling back or you’ll get caught’.

While Steward was urging Fury to go on the offensive, John Fury could also be heard offering advice to his son, repeatedly saying ‘light punches, light punches.

He was also heard talking over Steward telling Fury to ‘box and move’.

Fury was told by his team with two rounds remaining of the contest that he was winning the fight.

Despite being told he was winning the fight heading into the final two rounds, Fury ultimately ended up on the wrong side of the judges’ verdict.

Usyk was awarded the 11th round by the two judges who ultimately awarded him the contest, but Fury was awarded the final round on each of their scorecards.

The judges on the night scored the bout 115-112 Usyk, 114-113 Fury and 114-113 Usyk to see the Ukrainian win via split-decision.

Fury dominated the opening rounds before Usyk came back to control the fight with a flurry of punches in the ninth round leaving the Gypsy King floundering.

After the final round, there was mutual respect between the two fighters who exchanged kisses and hugs as they awaited the result.

But Fury’s mood soured when Usyk was named the victor with the UK fighter telling an interviewer that ‘people are siding with Usyk because of the Ukraine war’.

Fury suggested he will take time to decide whether he will activate the rematch clause

Fury initially insisted he will activate the clause to ensure a rematch takes place in October, but later suggested he would take time to decide.

‘We’ve punched f**k out of each other for 12 rounds there, so we’re going to go home, eat some food, drink a few beers, spend some family time, walk my dog, go to the tip and me and Frank are going to talk about what’s going to happen in the future,’ Fury said at a press conference.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I think I’d just do a little bit more of the same, keep my defence a little bit tighter, a bit more focused, and not so much messing around because I was having fun in there.

‘I was playing around, I was hitting him to the body, uppercuts to the head and I thought I was bossing the fight.’

Boxing fans begin extraordinary conspiracy theory as they accuse Oleksandr Usyk of ‘using an inhaler’ between rounds during his victory over Tyson Fury(VIDEO)

Boxing fans have raised suspicions of Oleksandr Usyk allegedly breaking rules during his victory over Tyson Fury.

The Ukrainian became the first undisputed heavyweight world champion in a quarter of a century, with a split-decision victory over the Gypsy King.

However, some viewers began a conspiracy theory on social media that Usyk was ‘using an inhaler’ between rounds.

Footage appeared to show Usyk putting something to his mouth while sat in his corner.

However, other fans have argued that there was no wrongdoing by Usyk, with there being no suggestion that Usyk did use an inhaler other than from a number of boxing supporters on social media.

One fan argued that ‘Tyson Fury got cheated’ while another said ‘anyone notice they gave what looked like an inhaler to Usyk in round 6/7?’

Another boxing supporter also questioned: ‘Did Usyk just take an inhaler in the corner?’

The latter comment got a response though which suggested that another angle showed Usyk was just kissing a religious cross.

A fifth person pointed out: ‘Looking very closely I see a cross. I haven’t used an inhaler before but wouldn’t it look more obvious?

‘Won’t we see Usyk taking a breath in and such? I didn’t see those signs.’

One fan made light of a video showing the moment, writing: ‘WOW. Usyk was captured by a fan using what looks like an inhaler in the undisputed heavyweight fight with Fury…. never mind it’s a cross.’

While in their corners, fighters are only allowed to use water and Vaseline – not even energy gels.

Some fans also raised the question of whether the footage was just Usyk having a sip of water.

The moment which proved decisive was in the ninth round when an official knockdown was scored as Usyk pummeled the British heavyweight.

Fury fell back against the ropes and the bell saved him at the end of the right.

After the fight, Fury’s promoter said: ‘I believe the referee saved Tyson from a knock-out and stole the ninth-round knock-out, which should have happened.’

Revealed: Why Oleksandr Usyk will be STRIPPED of undisputed world heavyweight title despite beating Tyson Fury(Video)

Oleksandr Usyk is set to lose his title as undisputed heavyweight champion of the world despite beating Tyson Fury.

The Ukrainian defeated the Gypsy King in a blockbuster clash on Saturday night in Saudi Arabia, winning via split decision after the judges scored the fight 115-112, 113-114, 114-113.

It meant that Usyk unified the heavyweight division after taking the WBC title off Fury, which was added to his WBA (Super), WBO, IBF and IBO titles.

However, the Ukrainian is set to be stripped of the IBF title in the coming weeks, with the 37-year-old instead focusing on a contracted rematch with Fury, which is expected to take place around October.

This is because Filip Hrgovic, Usyk’s mandatory challenge for the IBF title, won’t wait for that rematch to take place, meaning the IBF belt will be vacated by Usyk and then up for grabs when the Hrgovic takes on Daniel Dubois in June of this year.

Whoever wins in that June bout is then expected to face Anthony Joshua at Wembley in September.

This means that by the time of Usyk and Fury’s rematch, the victor of that bout will not be the unified world champion as they will be missing the IBF crown.

It would then be up to the winner whether they would try to reclaim that to unify the division again.

However, speaking after the fight, the issue of losing the IBF title didn’t seem to be something that Usyk was particularly bothered about.

The Ukrainian was tired after he endured an extra long build-up to the fight with Fury when the original date of the contest of February 17 was postponed due to the Gypsy King suffering a nasty cut above his eye in training.

‘I don’t think about boxing now, please,’ Uysk said when asked about running it again with Fury.

‘My camp started in September 2023, I worked for nine months. I missed Happy New Year, I missed my son’s birthday, I missed my other son’s birthday, I missed my daughter’s birthday and then the birth of my daughter.

‘I also missed family holidays. I was only focused on this fight, now I’m happy and I want to go back home.’

JOHNNY NELSON: Thuggish and rude, Tyson Fury and his camp left me cold with their conduct in Saudi… mental health issues don’t excuse his behaviour and it’s time to say ‘we’ve had enough’

Let me address the elephant in the room, sympathy for Tyson Fury this morning is thin on the ground.

I always love the Brit to win but there is a growing amount of people who follow our sport that are happy he didn’t. And you have to ask, why is that?

There is a responsibility that comes with being a world champion and how Tyson and his entourage conduct themselves in the build-up to a fight leaves me cold. It’s thuggish, it’s rude and it can’t be excused as big fight showmanship any more.

Like it or not, British sports fans are still viewed around many parts of the world as hooligans and the antics shown by people close to Tyson do nothing to dispel that.

They are representing our sport, our country, they are part of him, a world champion. Yet it comes to a point where I find myself saying ‘You’re a great fighter but you know what? This is not on, we’ve had enough.’

All his showboating did was give Usyk a chance to step back and consider a different approach

Tyson’s story as an underdog, who has battled his mental demons to get back on the road to recovery and rise to being a champion is a bestseller. It has warmed the hearts of people who don’t necessarily follow boxing.

He has made enough money now for his family and all his descendants to live comfortably for life but what’s it worth when you tarnish a legacy in this way?

People are scared to criticise for fear of being insensitive because of Tyson’s mental issues. That shouldn’t excuse his behaviour.

Like many fighters, he can spiral into depression. You can often feel alone.

Muhammad Ali, Anthony Joshua so many more have had to conquer it. But that doesn’t mean you let standards drop. Tyson is a clever man; he can surely see it. Nobody is telling him to put this behaviour in check.

My trainer Brendan Ingle used to say to me, boxing at its worst can be ‘a dirty, rotten prostituting game’ and at its best can be the greatest sport in the world.

He has lost to the man he once described as a ‘gap-toothed, blown up middleweight’ and he shouldn’t have done because he had gained control.

Whether it was down to complacency or fitness, Tyson shouldn’t have allowed Oleksandr Usyk back in after round seven.

He was having great success on the front foot, jabbing, finding the uppercut, leaning in but he overcooked the boxing against ‘the boxer’ then showboated when he was nowhere near the finish line.

You showboat to say, ‘I’m better than you, I’m in control’, all it did was give Usyk a chance to step back and consider a different approach.

Tyson’s head will be fried this morning just watching how he got clipped and hurt so badly in round nine.

It was worse than his knockdown against Deontay Wilder because he had gone. The referee did him a favour because his body was limp, it was like trying to hold water in your hand.

I deciphered that as him winning the fight, but I may have to fine tune how I read my dreams from now on.

However, you saw the fight though, it was a heart on the line achievement for Usyk and the best man won.

Putting politics aside, the money of Saudi Arabia is the reason such big fights are happening and it is the reason we will see more opportunities for Tyson, Usyk and Anthony Joshua.

I know Tyson says he will take the contracted rematch, but I do question whether they are only words. He will be devastated by this loss.

Once he has digested it and the fall-out, I wonder if he’ll have the motivation.

Maybe my words will motivate him but if he comes again, I just hope he does things the correct way for a champion.
