‘Downton Abbey’ co-star Hugh Bonneville says Oscar-winning Harry Potter actor was a ‘true legend’

Dame Maggie Smith’s Downton Abbey co-star Hugh Bonneville and Sister Act co-star Whoopi Goldberg have led tributes to the iconic actor after she died at the age of 89.

Bonneville, who starred alongside Dame Maggie in the ITV drama, remembered her as a “true legend of her generation” who had “sharp wit and formidable talent”.

Meanwhile, Goldberg called her a “one-of-a-kind” actor.

Dame Maggie played a number of iconic roles over the years, including Professor McGonagall in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise and the fanatical teacher Jean Brodie in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie.

Her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens announced on Friday the Oscar-winning actress had died in Chelsea and Westminster hospital.

A statement from her children said: “She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.

“She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.

“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Scraggly Maggie! Downton Abbey’s Dame Smith is taken away by ambulance while shooting scenes as a sick street beggar for Lady In The Van

It was an unpleasant sight to see a sickly Dame Maggie Smith being shuffled into the back of an ambulance on Tuesday.

Thankfully, she was busy shooting a dramatic scene on the set of her new BBC film, Lady in the Van, based on Alan Bennett’s autobiographical West End play that goes by the same name.

The 79-year-old actress has swapped her Downton Abbey finery for a less glamorous look as she embodies the character of eccentric homeless pensioner Miss Shepherd in the movie.

Based on true events, for 15 years Miss Shepherd lived in a battered old yellow van parked on Bennett’s driveway in Camden, North London.

The playwright, who wrote about his experience and relationship with Miss Shepard in his diaries before sharing the story on stage, is played by Alex Jennings.

The flick, written by Bennett and directed by Nicholas Hytner, is their second collaboration since 2006’s The History Boys.  

A few weeks back, the iconic film’s breakout star James Corden was also spotted on the set filming a cameo role as a market stall vendor.

The almost unrecognisable Dame truly looked like a tramp in worn-out, frumpy layers of clothing.

Her greasy grey hair was ratty and unkempt and the luxury of make-up was forbidden.

A bright red blanket covered her lap as she was manoeuvred into the back of an ambulance in a wheel chair. 

Her appearance was enough to send a shiver down Violet Crawley’s spine. 

But it was all in the name of art and there are already high expectations for the film when it is released next year. 

Bennett described Miss Shepherd in his diaries as: ‘Nearly six foot, she was a commanding figure and would have been more so had she not been kitted out in greasy raincoat, orange skirt, Ben Hogan golfing cap and carpet slippers.’

After watching her suffer at the hands of children and drunken revellers, the playwright took pity on her and agreed to let her park her vehicle on his driveway – but he wasn’t happy about it.

Detailing his experience, he admitted: ‘It made me furious that I had been driven to such a pass. But I wanted a quiet life as much as, and possibly more than, she did. In the garden she was at least out of harm’s way.’

However, when she passed away in 1989, Bennett discovered that there was more to Miss Shepherd than he realised.

His ‘tenant’ had actually been a talented pianist who suffered a series of mental breakdowns.

The expert also added that Meghan’s exclusion was not intentional, even though some people might have seen it that way.

With 50 holidays on cruise ships under his belt by the time he turned 30, Bradley loves nothing more than heading on to the open seas for a bit of rest and recreation.

Starting off on family cruises when he was a child, he started cruising as an adult once he turned 18 and hasn’t looked back since, celebrating his 30th birthday on board Princess Cruises’ €950 million (£812 million) Sun Princess.

Bradley, from Wales, has achieved ‘elite’ status due to his expeditions, with it giving him a number of hidden perks he can take advantage of every time he heads back on board a cruise.

And after experiencing so many cruises, he also knows a thing or two are the secret costs that’ll leave you significantly out of pocket.

When it comes to packing for a cruise ship, Bradley told LADbible about his ‘biggest tip’ regarding gadgets you should be bringing with you.

And it’s nothing fancy, luxurious or stand out.

No, it’s a pretty standard device. A plug. But not just any plug.

“My biggest tip for cruisers is when it comes to cruising as a couple of family is always take a universal plug adapter,” Bradley told LADbible.

“In a cabin you’ve quite limited some times, especially on an inside cabin. And you’ve got to charge the phones, the kid’s iPads, my hair dryer, straighteners.”

Bradley revealed that many people get caught out, not realising that the cruise ship you’re catching does not have the same plugs as the location that boarding takes place.

He explained: “Some of these companies, such as Princess or Cunard, some of them are American.

“When people catch these ships in Southampton they automatically think they’re British so they take British plugs.

“Last time we cruised there was a British couple who said ‘I didn’t even think, I thought there would be normal British plugs’. That little thing is huge, people need that.”

Two people have been arrested in connection with the mother’s death

A British mum-of-five who died following a ‘liquid Brazilian bum lift (BBL)’ procedure posted about her family in a final Facebook post before her death.

Alice Delsie Preete Webb, 33, has been named as the first person in the UK to die following a liquid BBL procedure.

It’s understood the beautician attended a studio in Gloucester on Monday evening (September 23) where she underwent the ‘minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment’.

She died at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday (September 24), officials confirmed.

Gloucestershire Police’s Major Crime team is currently investigating Webb’s death. The two people who have been arrested have now been released on bail.

The night before undergoing the ‘cosmetic procedure’ (September 22), the mother took to Facebook to post a picture of a pre-surgery ‘present’ given to her by one of her daughters.

The gift was a small pumpkin, which was shared with the caption: “How cute”.

In the comments section, she uploaded another snap of the now-carved pumpkin with a tealight inside.

Alongside the image, she wrote: “My little lamp,” as per The Sun.

Following Webb’s death, her partner Dane Knight has released a statement.

“Want to say a heart felt thank you to all family and friends that were here for us at our time of need, including all of the kind messages sent to my children and myself,” he wrote.

“There was some very beautiful messages sent by some of your children that formed a start of a smile from the corner of my kids mouth.

“I feel this is important saying this as I will not accept speculations from adults being accidentally being eavesdropped by children and unnecessary questions raised to the five girls, so be extremely careful on what you say and who’s around! My children are extremely vulnerable!”

He added that those speaking about his partner’s death should have her five daughters’ ‘feelings at heart’.

Dr Paul Banwell, a founding member of the Safer Cosmetic Surgery Group has explained how a liquid BBL is considered a ‘controversial procedure within the industry’.

Unlike traditional BBL surgery, the liquid version uses dermal filler injections to ‘enhance the shape and size’ of a person’s buttocks.

“At present, Brazilian butt lifts, including liquid BBLs (and all other injectables) are legal in the UK but sadly remain woefully unregulated,” the plastic surgeon told LADbible.

“This heartbreaking news should prompt action at their highest levels. I hope this loss will encourage much-needed urgent conversations about improving safety standards in the UK aesthetics industry and make this a doctor-only procedure.”

He added that anyone who is thinking about going under the knife should always make sure their chosen practitioner is ‘fully medically qualified’ and that they specialise in the procedure you’re considering.

TV star known as ‘The Lip King’ arrested over mum’s death after BBL procedure in UK

A beautician who is known as the ‘Lip King’ has allegedly been arrested following the death of a woman who underwent a butt lift procedure.

Jordan Parke, who has appeared on ITV’s This Morning and Channel 4’s Bodyshockers in the past, was arrested by Gloucestershire Police in connection with the death of Alice Webb.

Alice, a 33-year-old mum-of-five, reportedly underwent a procedure known as a liquid BBL or Brazilian Butt Lift.

Parke allegedly co-runs Studio 23 clinic, based in Gloucester, where Alice underwent the cosmetic procedure.

Parke, who calls himself ‘The Plastic Surgery Advocate’ on social media, has been active on Instagram despite the legal proceedings.

He was photographed leaving his home in Dudley, West Midlands, on 26 September and said: “I can’t talk to anybody. I was arrested,” according to the Mirror.

Parke has also appeared on US reality series Botched. He has had at least four nose jobs and 50 other procedures.

The procedure Alice underwent sees patients have hyaluronic acid and dermal fillers injected into their backside. These treatments are offered online for around £2,500 per session and can be completed in just 60 minutes. Experts have repeatedly shared warnings against the procedures.

Alice’s heartbroken partner Dane Knight shared a post to Facebook regarding her tragic passing. Alice was mum to five girls: Delsie, 15, Preete, 13, Gracie 12, Nylie, 10 and Clarie, seven.

Dane wrote on Facebook: “Want to say a heartfelt thank you to all family and friends that were here for us at our time of need, including all of the kind messages sent to my children and myself.

“There was some very beautiful messages sent by some of your children that formed a start of a smile from the corner of my kids mouth. Be extremely careful on what you say – my children are extremely vulnerable!”

Alice died at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning after falling unwell. It is reported that she is the first Brit to pass away from a liquid BBL procedure.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Alice’s friend Abigail Irwin, which has since been taken down.

A message on the site read: “Alice passed away Monday evening after having the BBL treatment. I am hoping to raise as many funds as we can to support Dane, the partner of Alice and their five beautiful children at this very difficult sad time.”

Meghan Markle is experiencing a significant Hollywood snub as former *Suits* co-stars Patrick Adams and Sarah Rafferty launched their new podcast, *Sidebar*. The inaugural episode recently dropped, and to everyone’s surprise, Meghan’s name barely surfaced in the conversation. While Adams and Rafferty reminisced about their time on set, Meghan’s contributions were reduced to a mere mention, highlighting her diminishing role in their narrative.

Once considered a staunch defender of Meghan, Adams simply listed his favorite co-stars, leaving her out. Just a couple of years ago, he was championing Meghan against bullying accusations, calling her an “enthusiastic, kind, collaborative, generous, and joyful person.” However, fast forward to today, and his recent comments paint a different picture. It seems that communication has dwindled, revealing that Meghan’s previous reputation did not hold up against the realities of their former working relationship.

 

The snub isn’t limited to the podcast; a behind-the-scenes cameraman recently spilled the tea to the *Daily Mail*, describing Meghan as “difficult, demanding, capricious, and rude.” It appears that her diva antics were well-known on set long before she entered the royal spotlight. The crew affectionately dubbed her “the princess,” a fitting title given her inflated sense of self-importance. 

Despite being sixth on the call sheet, Meghan had the audacity to refer to *Suits* as “my show” more times than one could count. She seems to forget that the show isn’t exactly in the same league as *Friends* or *The Office*. For someone who left such an indelible mark, you’d think she would at least acknowledge her role as more of a supporting character than the main event. Yet here we are, with Meghan still clinging to the notion that *Suits* would have crumbled without her dazzling presence.

Her insistence on being at the forefront of conversations regarding the show is almost laughable. This podcast snub, coupled with whispers from former crew members about her alleged diva behavior, paints a portrait of someone who may not be the beloved star she envisions herself to be. A pattern seems to emerge when multiple accounts surface regarding her treatment of those beneath her, reinforcing the narrative of Meghan as a bully or insufferable colleague.

Although he may be the son-in-law of a Hollywood producer—something that surely appealed to Meghan during her rise to stardom—it raises the question of whether he has finally realized that playing the supportive sidekick to Meghan’s antics isn’t winning him any points in the long run.
