Burrell claimed that Diana was also disgusted by the thought, and felt he had been seriously “setting the stage for that encounter”. The idea that he believed he would actually sleep with the royal troubled her throughout her relationship with Dodi.

Diana was bombarded with gifts, with the tycoon muscling in as a father figure later in their relationship. He would arrange for Harrods vans to be sent to Kensington Palace crammed full of gadgets. Diana would return them but runners would return with more parcels on foot.

Mohamed Al Fayed was accused of rape and sexual assault by 19 different women when he was alive, Scotland Yard revealed last week.

The victims came forward to the force between 2005 and 2023 but Al Fayed was never charged before he died aged 94 last year. The offences were alleged to have taken place between 1979 and 2013.

Three were allegations of rape, 15 were sexual assault and one related to trafficking. The Met Police said in a statement on Thursday: “At this time we have identified 19 allegations which resulted in crimes being recorded involving Al Fayed relating to 19 separate women that were reported to the Met between 2005 and 2023.

“Between 2005 and 2023 we approached the Crown Prosecution Service on five occasions – two of these, in 2009 and 2015, were to pass full files of evidence. The remaining three approaches were for early investigative advice. In all 19 allegations that were reported to police there was no further action taken against Mohamed Al Fayed.”

The late Harrods tycoon has been accused accused of rape and sexual assault by 19 different women, Scotland Yard revealed last week. A new BBC documentary also claims that Al Fayed deployed an army of aides to silence his alleged victims and used his power and wealth to evade justice.

And as the sickening allegations emerge, concerning details regarding Al Fayed’s relationship with Princess Diana have also surfaced. After Diana separated from King Charles in 1992, she began to form a new life for herself away from the Royal Family. She used her new-found freedom and the huge interest surrounding her as a platform for vital charity work, raising awareness of topics her in-laws shied away from.

And speaking in 2023, Mark Hollingsworth, Al Fayed’s biographer, told The Independent that the tycoon had “long courted” the princess and after her divorce considered himself her “confidante and protector”. He said Al Fayed told him: “She had selfish parents. Her mother and her father were absent, left her with nannies… She was looking for the right man who could compensate for what she missed during her childhood.”

In a searing swipe at Diana’s broken marriage, Al Fayed is said to have branded the late royal “an incubator”. He told Hollingsworth: “Unfortunately, her husband [Prince Charles] was married to her because she was beautiful, provided an heir and then he left, had fun and continued with his old life. She was there as an incubator.”

In the summer of 1997, the year after Charles and Diana were finally able to officially divorce following their five year separation, Al Fayed invited Diana and her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, to join his family on his yacht in the south of France. The 208ft superyacht was the perfect setting for family time, with photos from the time showing the loving mum playing with her sons on the deck.

The boat, which has now changed hands, has nine staterooms and can hold 18 people as well as a crew of 26. Dripping in luxury, it boasted a jacuzzi, office, formal dining room and a swim platform. Al Fayed died at the age of 94 in August last year.

Prince Harry has begged “people at the top” to “start listening” as he kicked off his solo trip to Africa without Meghan Markle.

After several days in New York last week and a fleeting visit to the UK earlier this week, the Duke of Sussex has now headed to Lesotho for his first trip to Southern Africa in five years. While there, he reunited with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, with whom he co-founded his charity Sentebale.

Set up in 2006, the organisation supports children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana living with, or who are at risk from, HIV. Last night, Harry caught up with Prince Seeiso around a bonfire at a children’s centre in the small country.

And there he talked about the impact of his Sentebale charity and made an impassioned plea. During a speech, Harry said: “We’re hitting the targets, not just Sentebale but all of the departments are, and it’s making a massive difference, and it is this surge of energy and optimism and the voice of young people ranging from six to 25 – and the biggest difference of which really needs more work, is when people from the top start listening.”

At the bonfire welcome event, Harry was also greeted by those who support Sentebale and enjoyed a performance from dancers and a choir. Earlier in the day, it emerged he had enjoyed lunch with Princess Senate Seeiso in Lesotho, which is often called the ‘Mountain Kingdom’.
