Despite its previous dominance at the box office, the Fast & Furious franchise has faced uncertainty in recent years as financial returns began to decline.
While the mid-pandemic release of F9: The Fast Saga may have impacted its box office performance, Fast X also struggled, despite boasting a production budget over $100 million larger than its predecessor.
This suggests a broader decline in audience interest, reminiscent of the superhero fatigue observed in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the remaining DC Extended Universe releases.
Vin Diesel’s recent statement confirms the conclusion of the mainline franchise, but this doesn’t mean the end for Fast & Furious as a whole.
In mid-2023, it was announced that development was underway for a new standalone sequel titled Hobbs & Reyes, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role following his surprise return in Fast X, and Jason Momoa returning as the antagonist.
Additionally, Johnson confirmed that Hobbs & Shaw 2 remains in development, although plans have been delayed to prioritize the film bridging the gap between the tenth and eleventh installments of the franchise.
Despite meeting his demise back in 2017, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is joining the MCU in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, and one theory could explain how this is possible.
Hugh Jackman has portrayed James “Logan” Howlett, a.k.a. the mutant Wolverine, since 2000’s X-Men, and is returning as Wolverine in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine making him one of the longest-running superhero actors of all time. While Wolverine’s return in the MCU’s Phase 5 is highly-anticipated, there has been confusion about where Deadpool & Wolverine will fit into 20th Century Fox’s X-Men timeline, as audiences have already witnessed Wolverine’s emotional death.
Before his return in Deadpool & Wolverine was announced in September 2022, Hugh Jackman had retired from playing Wolverine, with 2017’s Logan acting as his last hurrah. Logan marked the introduction of Dafne Keen’s Laura, a.k.a. X-23, Wolverine’s biological daughter who urged him to take her to safety at the Canadian border while being chased by Wolverine’s clone, X-24. X-24 got the upper hand on Jackman’s original hero,
killing him after an epic battle, and Reynolds and Jackman have promised not to mess with this powerful ending, so questions have arisen about how Wolverine can return in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Black Adam (Teth/Theo-Adam) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics.
Created by Otto Binder and C. C. Beck, the character is one of the archenemies of the superhero Captain Marvel and the nemesis of the Marvel Family.
Black Adam first appeared as a one-time villain for the first issue of Fawcett Comics’ The Marvel Family comic book (December 1945).
However, Black Adam was revived as a recurring character after DC Comics first licensed and then acquired the Fawcett characters and began publishing Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel) Family stories under the title Shazam! in the 1970s.
As originally depicted, Black Adam was a corrupted, ancient Egyptian predecessor of Captain Marvel, who fought his way to modern times to challenge the hero and his Marvel Family associates.
Since the turn of the 21st century, however, Black Adam has been re-defined by DC Comics writers Jerry Ordway, Geoff Johns, and David S.
Goyer as a corrupted antihero attempting to clear his name and reputation. Featured roles in such comic book series as Justice Society of America (JSA), Villains United, Infinite Crisis, and 52 have elevated the character’s prominence in the DC Universe. In 2009, Black Adam was ranked as IGN’s 16th-greatest comic book villain of all time.
The character will make his cinematic debut in 2022’s Black Adam portrayed by Dwayne Johnson set in the DC Extended Universe.
Man of Steel 2: Everything We Know About Henry Cavill’s Canceled Sequel
Henry Cavill was initially slated to return to his iconic role as Superman in Man of Steel 2, but the sequel was eventually canceled by DC Studios.
Henry Cavill’s Superman sequel, Man of Steel 2, was tragically canceled in the months surrounding the reveal of James Gunn’s DCU. Cavill’s depiction of Superman has been largely lauded ever since he debuted in 2013’s Man of Steel, after which he reprised his role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and most recently, Black Adam. For his part, Cavill was also a fan of the role, with his departure being one of the more controversial consequences of the DCU’s existence.
It wasn’t, of course, always supposed to be this way. Man of Steel remains one of the DCEU’s most successful movies, which practically necessitated a solo sequel for the titular hero. Instead, the ill-fated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice saw him share the screen with the Caped Crusader, with middling to poor reviews spelling the beginning of the end of the DCEU as it became an early example of the DCEU’s mismanagement of these beloved IPs. Still, Man of Steel 2 was planned right up until the DCEU’s death knell.
Man Of Steel 2’s History Explained
Man of Steel 2 entered the planning stage around 2016, where it remained for several years following the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in which Superman notably “died.” Justice League, which resurrected Superman, was then released in 2017, facilitating Cavill’s return in a second solo movie. He would not reprise his role in person, however, until 2022’s Black Adam (not counting Zack Snyder’s Justice League). It was after this that Cavill confirmed that he would be returning to the DCEU via social media, which was accompanied by an image of him in his iconic suit.
It was around that time that Man of Steel 2 began development in earnest, with Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight, reportedly in charge of the story. Had it gone ahead, the movie would have been released over a decade after Superman’s first solo outing in 2013, sparking speculation over how the franchise would handle such a gap. This led some to believe it would comprise a soft reboot in a similar vein to Gunn’s acclaimed The Suicide Squad, which would entail recasting certain actors like Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
What Was Revealed About Man of Steel 2’s Plot
Insiders revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Man of Steel 2 would bring the iconic Superman villain, Brainiac, into the fold in his live-action cinematic debut. While Brainiac has made appearances in the live-action Superman showsSmallville and Krypton, he would have been the perfect villain for DC to work into the cinematic franchise, had the movie gone ahead. The classic DC villain is off-the-wall enough to comprise part of a particularly compelling story, and certainly one that would at least fit into the brand-new DCU narrative.
Further details are scarce. Brainiac is known for attempting to collect all the knowledge in the known universe, flying a skull-shaped spaceship, and shrinking cities to sizes that he can fit into bottles. It is the latter tidbit that puts him in direct opposition with Superman, as he shrunk Krypton’s capital city, Kandor, before attempting to do the same to Earth’s cities. Evidently, this would have helped to flesh out Cavill’s Superman as more of his Kryptonian heritage is dragged up and his protectiveness of Earth develops. Unfortunately, however, Knight’s pitch was reportedly rejected.
Why Man of Steel 2 Was Canceled
It didn’t take long before Cavill’s confirmation of a grand return was contradicted by James Gunn in late 2022, as the newly-instated co-CEO of DC Studios revealed that Superman would be rebooted. Cavill would later regrettably confirm this, with the amicable clarification that James Gunn and Peter Safran “have a universe to build” in which a younger Superman would appear in the early stages of his superhero career. Almost as soon as Gunn assumed the role in November 2022, Man of Steel 2 was scrapped.
Given the decade-spanning gulf between Cavill’s solo outings, this wasn’t too surprising. Upon Gunn’s assumption of the co-CEO role and his announcement of the DCU, speculation had already begun swirling around Cavill’s continued involvement before confirmation that a new actor would take on the role in a straight reboot of the franchise instead of Man of Steel 2. Based on Gunn’s purported inspirations for the new movie, Superman: Legacy, it seems the DCU will instead explore a brighter take on the Man of Steel in a departure from Cavill’s darker rendition. Hopefully, it will leave Cavill’s legacy intact.

The Yankees lost their best starting pitcher — perhaps the best in the sport — and have been perfectly fine through the first few weeks of the season.
Without ace Gerrit Cole, the Yankees’ rotation has posted a 2.86 ERA through 1 games, the third-best in the sport as MLB action began Thursday.
By FanGraphs’ measure of Wins Above Replacement, the Yankees’ rotation was the seventh-most valuable in the majors.
Carlos Rodon (1.72 ERA) has pitched like a No. 1, even if he is pitching differently — with a wider repertoire — than in his best seasons.
Carlos Rodon has resembled a No. 1 option to start the 2024 season for the Yankees.
Luis Gil has allowed three runs across nine innings as the Yankees’ No. 5 starter.Luis Gil (three runs in nine innings) has shown excellent stuff in stepping up to the No. 5 role.
“We feel like all the guys we’re running out there in our rotation right now are very capable,” manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday, before the Yankees begin a series in Cleveland on Friday. “Even the ones coming off of tough seasons or injury or whatever are not far removed from being at the top of their game, with a track record.”
At least in the early going, Rodon has bounced back from a brutal 202, and Nestor Cortes — with a pair of subpar starts before an eight-inning, zero-run gem Monday in a win over the Marlins — has shown signs that he can recover from an injury-filled ’2.
Clarke Schmidt, who might have entered camp as the most reliable starter outside of Cole, has been the surprising weak spot through two starts with a 4.66 ERA.
Schmidt will get the start Friday to open the series with the Guardians.
“With the talent those guys possess, I’m not surprised when they do go out and have success,” Boone said of his Cole-less rotation. “It’s not a given by any means, but I don’t think it’s a reach with any of those guys, either.”
The Yankees’ rotation has, so far, survived without Gerrit Cole. The Yankees have walked at least five times in each of their past five games.
Their 66 walks are the most in the club’s first 1 games of a season in the past 14 years (since 2011).
Aaron Judge (14 walks) and Juan Soto (11) predictably have led the way.
Anthony Volpe and Gleyber Torres (seven apiece) have been the next best.
“[Volpe] hasn’t given away at-bat yet,” hitting coach James Rowson said. “Not that I can think of off the top of my head. He’s battled every at-bat.”
Ex-Mets, Yankees great Doc Gooden has a theory about MLB’s surge in blown-out elbows | Klapisch

If anyone understands the beauty (and the risk) of a triple-digit fastball, it’s Doc Gooden, who blistered his way into the history books in 1985. Seems like a lifetime ago, but velocity still rules baseball, even if the casualty rate is higher than ever.
Gooden has been paying attention to the growing number of pitchers who throw just as hard as he did – and paying for it with torn ligaments and strained flexor tendons.

The Yankees’ 10-3 start is impressive, and even better, they did it without Gerrit Cole, baseball’s best pitcher.
Sure, it’s not even tax day. But the Yankees’ terrific winter work is already showing. Here are seven reasons the Yankees quickly rose from a 2023 “disaster” to American League favorite.
1. Juan Soto
Trying to regain their status as the Bronx Bombers after a moribund season at bat, the Yankees targeted Soto once the previously big-spending Padres went into sell mode. The Padres named about 17 different young Yankees of interest — including speedy slugger Spencer Jones (also held out during Corbin Burnes and Dylan Cease talks), top shortstops Roderick Arias and first-round draftee George Lombard Jr.
And the month-long negotiation that began with Yankees exec Omar Minaya talking to Padres GM A.J. Preller at the GM meetings culminated with the winter meetings deal — with pitchers Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez and catcher Kyle Higashioka going for Soto and Trent Grisham.
One key was the Yankees relenting on the coveted Thorpe after originally discussing higher-ranked, harder-throwing Chase Hampton. Thorpe, who features a big-time changeup, eventually went from San Diego to Chicago for Cease.

Meantime, Soto has been brilliant (1.008 OPS), and his patient approach seems to have affected the rest of the lineup (.345 OBP, up from .304 last year). And beyond his all-world offense, his offseason work with Jackie Bradley Jr. turned him into a solid outfielder.
2. Marcus Stroman
The Yankees turned to Stroman after a gap couldn’t be closed with first choice Blake Snell. The Long Islander, who always wanted to be a Yankee, took $37M over two years after weighing two- and three-year offers from the Giants, and a longer one for a lower salary from the Padres. The Yankees were a surprise since word got out they apparently didn’t see him as a playoff starter back when they were outbid by the Mets in trade talks with Toronto.
3. Anthony Volpe
The talk all spring was how he “flattened” his swing and was ready for a rise, and it’s been nothing short of amazing. Volpe, who hit .209 last year, is at .372. Volpe gets the bulk of the credit, since he’s ultra-focused, but personal hitting coach Jason Lefkowitz and new Yankees hitting coach James Rowson helped him ditch the uppercut.
4. Giancarlo Stanton
If anyone thought it was impossible for Stanton (1.450 OPS over his past five games) to get in any better shape, he somehow did it. He’s now thin and cut. Stanton dumbed it down for me and told me the key is just eating less, but in greater detail he laid out a diet program to someone else that couldn’t be copied by many, including no eating food after 3 p.m.
5. Carlos Rodon
Rodon (1.72 ERA) rededicated himself after his abysmal initial year in The Bronx, arriving weeks early in Tampa to prove 2023 was a fluke. He took off many pounds, improved his body composition and added three pitches, with the cutter and changeup aiding the slider-fastball combo.

6. Alex Verdugo
The Yankees tried for a while to obtain him, almost as hard as the Red Sox were trying to unload the main piece in the most-criticized Red Sox trade since Babe Ruth. Captain Aaron Judge’s seal of approval helped clinch the deal.
7. Bullpen
Brian Cashman and Co. have been very good at finding bullpen pieces, and the trade for lefty Caleb Ferguson — one of three deals with the Dodgers — looks like a winner.
