Set to release July 11, 2025, the first official film of the new DCU helmed by stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan features an extensive roster of heroes and villains.

Now that filming is underway and James Gunn is back behind the camera, DC fans are getting their first looks at Faría’s antagonist both in action and in costume.

First Photos of 2025’s Superman Villain Revealed

On-set photos revealed María Gabriela de Faría in costume as the Superman villain, Angela Spica, also known as the Engineer.

James Gunn announced the 31-year-old Venezuelan actress had been cast in November 2023.

These new images taken on the Atlanta, Georgia set show Maria wearing a black, textured leather suit and a harness for stunt work.

In DC Comics, The Engineer is a member of a “cynical, brutally pragmatic” anti-hero team known as The Authority who also have an upcoming film within the DCU’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.

Her unique skillset stems from the fact her blood was replaced with nano-tech, allowing her to manipulate technology.

How Many Villains Are in Superman?

María Gabriela de Faría’s Angela Spica isn’t the only villain David Corenswet’s Superman will be forced to contend with in 2025.

In addition to The Engineer and potentially other members of The Authority, Gunn’s Superman will also be dealing with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor and possibly Maxwell Lord, played by Sean Gunn.

The big question is whether any of these antagonists will truly be full-fledged baddies.

While The Engineer is sure to be an obstacle, she’s also somewhat of an anti-hero, and fans don’t think Hoult’s Lex Luthor (and his comic book accurate look) is Superman’s archnemesis just yet.

Regardless, these first on-set photos of María Gabriela de Faría won’t be the last of the Superman cast or the actress, especially with a movie about The Authority in the works at DC Studios.

Not only was Amber Heard’s role as Mera reportedly reduced for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but she almost had a completely different costume.

For the Aquaman sequel and final film of the original DCU, Amber Heard reprised her role as Mera, Arthur Curry’s wife, Queen of Atlantis, and the mother of Arthur Curry, Jr.

Now that the December 2023 film has come and gone, fans are learning more about what could have been.

Amber Heard’s Other Aquaman 2 Costume

Concept illustrator Darrell Warner posted scrapped costume designs for Amber Heard’s Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

The first design Warner shared on Instagram shows the aquatic queen wearing a much brighter costume with added yellow coloration.

For comparison, the following is what Mera’s costume ultimately looked like in Aquaman 2.

The second design Warner posted is a sketch showing Mera with an upswept hairdo and a coral-inspired headpiece, along with wearing an elaborate fish scale detailed gown and a Medici collar.

The artist’s Instagram caption reads as follows:

Certain elements of this design did make it into Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

For instance, the image below taken from the film shows Amber Heard wearing a gown similar to Darrell Warner’s concept complete with that stand-up collar.

Where it differs is Heard’s gown in the film features a more simplified bodice and that coral headpiece has been swapped for her standard crown.

Amber Heard’s Aquaman Problems

The final year of the DCU was a rough one for the franchise’s stars.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom disappointed at the box office with the latter opening to a lackluster $27.7 million opening weekend.

The year was particularly rough for Amber Heard amidst the ongoing fallout from her and ex-husband Johnny Depp’s 2022 public defamation trial.

Whether the controversy surrounding the actress impacted any design decisions for Mera’s costumes is unknown but not impossible, especially if her role was further minimized due to legal controversy.

Regardless, it is always fascinating to see ideas dreamed up for the big screen and what could’ve been in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

As fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe continue to discuss the future of the franchise, one name that often comes up in those conversations is Henry Cavill.

Cavill is known for his role as Superman in the DC Extended Universe, but he’s also made his presence felt in other pop-culture phenomenons such as Netflix’s The Witcher, and he’ll be leading an Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of video game franchise Warhammer 40K. He is also one of the fan-favorite choices to play the next James Bond. And yet, fans are still longing for him to join the MCU.

It sounds like that could become a reality sooner rather than later, but it might not be in the capacity fans were expecting.

Henry Cavill could play a Wolverine variant in the MCU

According to Marvel scooper CanWeGetSomeToast, Henry Cavill will appear in the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine to play a variant of Wolverine. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), they said they can “confirm” that Cavill will play the role in the movie and added that fans will be “very pleased” with his appearance.

They aren’t alone in claiming that either, as Twitter user Cryptic4KQual (who has also been reliable with scoops and reveals in the past) also alluded to him playing that role.

While Marvel Studios has yet to confirm Cavill’s involvement in the MCU, this wouldn’t be the most outlandish idea. Hugh Jackman will be reprising his role as Wolverine from the Fox X-Men movie series for the first time since 2017’s Logan, alongside Ryan Reynolds who plays Deadpool. However, as we are in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, multiple versions of the same character appearing in the one project is actually quite possible (just look at Spider-Man: No Way Home and Loki!).

Right now, the running theory is that Cavill could be playing a version of Old Man Logan from the Marvel Comics. He is rumored to don a brown coat for the part, which is a staple of the character’s attire in the source material. To say that fans would be thrilled with that would be an understatement.

While Cavill’s name had been thrown around in the Wolverine conversations on occasion by fans, it seemed much more likely that he would play Captain Britain or Doctor Doom. He was heavily rumored to play the latter in recent months due to the Fantastic Four movie casting getting underway (and the rumors that the MCU was looking for a new big bad after potentially moving away from Kang the Conqueror). With Doctor Doom now becoming a realistic possibility within the MCU, there were a lot of fans hoping Cavill would play the part.

If Cavill does appear in Deadpool and Wolverine as a variant of Logan, it will undoubtedly be an epic moment, but it could also receive a divisive response from fans who were hoping to see the actor play a more long-term part in the MCU.

DC Comics fans have recently spoken out on the casting of David Corenswet as the new Superman and branded him a ‘copycat ‘of Henry.

The actor who has never taken on a leading role in a major studio production before, will portray Clark Kent in the rebooted film series alongside Rachel Brosnahan, 32, as Lois Lane, replacing Amy Adams, reports Deadline.

David has taken the role over from Henry, 40, who was axed in part of new studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran’s huge shake-up to the DC Franchise.

But after the casting was revealed, fans asked why the producers decided to axe Henry, only to replace him with a younger carbon copy.

Eagle-eyed fans picked up on the striking similarities between the two who have chiselled jawlines, a great head of dark hair and piercing eyes.

One wrote: ‘It’s crazy how similar David looks to Henry’.

Another added: ‘David Cornswet does look like the younger Henry Cavill.’

A third fan wrote: ‘I’m sure David Corenswet is a decent actor but he still looks like a cheap copy of Henry Cavill’.

‘People (me included) see him just like a carbon copy of Henry Cavil, so he needs to bring something new to the character’, said another.

‘I’ve seen is fans saying what was the point in hiring David, he looks like Henry Cavill so why didn’t you hire Henry Cavill? I think that’s more of a compliment to both actors. They both look like #Superman, so them looking similar means they got the casting right both times,’ wrote a different fan.

Others think David is the perfect casting to portray a younger Superman.

U-turn: The backtrack came just two months after Cavill took to Instagram on October 24 – the Monday after Black Adam opened in theaters

The tests took place over two days with three actors in ‘full Superman attire’ – following a months-long search for the new stars.

Sources told Deadline that each actor ‘had closed test deals that would expire after two business weeks’ and wanted it sorted before a potential SAG-AFTRA strike, which could start at midnight June 30.

The other actors battling it out for the Superman role were British stars Tom Brittney and Nicholas Hoult, while Phoebe Dynevor and Emma Mackey were pipped at the post to the role of Lois.

In January new DC Studios bosses Gunn and Safran defended their decision not to bring back Henry as Superman as they rebooted the DC Universe with a new over-arching storyline.
