Reba McEntire sent some birthday wishes to a very special somebody — her son.

On Friday, the “Fancy” musician, 68, shared an Instagram tribute to her son Shelby Blackstock in honor of his 34th birthday.

Alongside a photo of the pair, in which McEntire looks pensive in a blue button-down shirt and Shelby is looking off into the distance clad in a cream polo shirt, she offered her son some sweet birthday wishes.

“I sure feel a lot better today than I did 34 years ago! 🙂 From the first second I found out I was pregnant, up to today, this child is one of the biggest blessings of my life. Thank you, God for letting me experience being a mama. I love you, Shelby, with all my heart mind and soul. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️” the country icon wrote on the social media platform.

McEntire shares Shelby with her ex-husband Narvel Blackstock, with whom she had their son one year after they tied the knot in 1989. The two were married for 26 years before divorcing in 2015.

In October 2022, McEntire opened up to PEOPLE about her adult son, saying, “I’m very proud of him. … He’s always trying to improve and do better. His daddy did a great job too.”

She continued, “Shelby is a gift from God to me. We’re very close. I was a very self-centered person to a degree before Shelby. But then there’s a little character who you are given the job to protect and nurture and love and teach, so all the attention’s not on you anymore.”

McEntire also said that she had “a lot of help” raising Shelby during her busy career.

“I had the best nannies, and I took him on the road with me,” The Voice coach said. “When I couldn’t, I would fly home after a concert, get him up in the morning, take him to school and pick him up. We’d play until I had to fly out again for a concert that night. I wanted to be with Shelby. Still do.”

In a December 2023 interview with PEOPLE, McEntire said that her joy comes in part from her son and his well-being. “I’m at a really good place in my life,” she said. “I’m happy, I’m in love. My kids are all healthy. My family’s healthy. So I’m happy.”

Reba McEntire welcomed a “powerhouse” singer to her team on The Voice after spinning her iconic red chair at the last minute. Ashley Bryant was wrapping up her cover of Carrie Underwood’s 2007 anthem, “Last Name,” during the blind auditions when McEntire turned around.

Bryant, 26, introduced herself while catching her breath. McEntire told the new addition to Team Reba that she “did a great job on Carrie’s song. She would be very proud.” The beloved country music legend

“I’ve been singing my whole life. Professionally, just about four years,” said Bryant, who said she’s from Louisville, Kentucky. “I got into a car wreck a couple years back so I’m 30% hearing in my right ear, and here I am.”

John Legend applauded Bryant’s “energy and (her) enthusiasm,” and brought up Maelyn Jarmon, who won The Voice when she competed on Legend’s team in season 16. Legend noted that the Texas-born artist also endured “significant hearing loss,” and assured Bryant that “the sky’s the limit for what you can do on this show.”

Dan + Shay — first-time coaches on The Voice and the first-ever coaching duo this season — said they knew that Bryant would be a “perfect match” with “Queen Reba,” though McEntire was “sneaky…and waited ’til the last minute!” Chance the Rapper said Bryant “should be really, really happy and excited.”

McEntire also coached Bryant’s new fiancé, Tom Nitti, on the last season of The Voice. Nitti, a former New York State Trooper and a father of two, left The Voice early to be with his family. It’s because of the show, however, that he met his fiancée. Bryant posted a photo on Instagram last week of the moment she and Nitti got engaged outside the historic Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. She shared at the time, “my heart is so full.” Nitti wrote in an Instagram caption of his own that he’s “happier than ever.”

EXCLUSIVE: Research throws doubt on the m:u:r:d:e:r of John Lennon in New York

Could the man jailed for John Lennon’s murder be INNOCENT? New documentary says a SECOND gunman could have fired fatal shots and questions whether killer Mark Chapman was brainwashed by CIA

A three-year investigation into the murder of John Lennon has unearthed a series of extraordinary inconsistencies – including the suggestion that detectives may have fundamentally misunderstood how the shooting happened.

British author and TV producer David Whelan has exhaustively examined Lennon’s fatal shooting on December 8, 1980, as he and his wife Yoko Ono returned to their home in the Dakota Building overlooking New York’s Central Park.

Whelan has unearthed a trove of documents relating to the killing, including gunman Mark Chapman’s ‘hit list’ – published for the first time here – which as well as the former Beatle also featured Marlon Brando and former First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

And intriguingly Whelan’s research for a forthcoming book into the former Beatle’s death has raised a series of troubling questions about exactly how the killing was carried out – and why.

Mr Whelan, 56, has spoken to key figures involved in the aftermath of the shooting. These include: the surgeon who treated Lennon and two nurses who assisted – as well as uncovering other witness testimonies which don’t appear to correspond with the official narrative.

John Lennon was murdered in New York at his home in the Dakota Building overlooking New York's Central Park on December 8, 1980

NYPD lead detective Ron Hoffman Hoffman's  original notebook into the shooting of John Lennon

Having obtained Detective Hoffman's original notebook and other documents associated with the case, Mr Whelan pointed out that no single eyewitness, including Yoko Ono, saw Lennon being shot by Chapman. Notes made by Detective Hoffman who investigated the shooting of John Lennon

Mark Chapman's 'hit list' included John Lennon and CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite

The prosecution’s version of events, accepted by the courts, was that disturbed loner Chapman lay in wait for Lennon and shot five times, four of the bullets hitting his victim in the back. But this now appears to be riddled with contradictions.

Instead Whelan’s witnesses suggest that the way the shooting was officially recorded may have been completely wrong – with the fatal shots fired into Lennon’s chest rather than back.

The surgeon who treated Lennon and the two nurses who assisted are all adamant that Lennon was shot in the front, with the four bullets grouped closely together, suggesting a high degree of marksmanship, and three passing straight through his body and out of his rear shoulder.

Other evidence gleaned by Whelan about those who may have influenced Chapman has led him to question whether the young man might even have been ‘groomed’ for the assassination through manipulation or even hypnosis by powerful backers with links to right-wing Southern Christians, the US military or the CIA.

Whelan points to first-hand witness statements by that surgeon, Dr David Halleran, and the two nurses, Barbara Kammerer and Dea Sato, all of whom state unequivocally that Lennon was shot four times in his upper chest area from the front, with three of the bullets exiting from his left back. One round remained in his left chest or lower shoulder area.

Whelan said: ‘Between the two of them, nurses Kammerer and Sato saw Lennon’s wounds up close, three times. Twice when he was washed and shrouded.

‘Nobody was better placed to say where and how John Lennon was shot.’

Yet retired NYPD lead detective Ron Hoffman, in a recorded interview with Whelan, claimed Lennon must have been shot in the back and not in the front, stating: ‘It’s impossible because he (Lennon) was walking up the stairs in front of Yoko’.

But that in itself raises another question, says Whelan.

Eyewitnesses do agree on where Chapman was standing: just at the entrance to the Dakota’s portico, several yards from those steps and if Lennon was climbing the steps he would have been out of Chapman’s view.

Said Mr Whelan: ‘As in the case of John F Kennedy, you simply cannot get shot in the front from the back.’

He continued: ‘The hollow-point bullets Chapman supposedly used do not usually pass through a victim, as they are designed to spread out on impact, causing maximum damage to the body.’

Yet three bullets did pass through Lennon, leaving holes in the glass panels of a vestibule door attached to the security entrance of the building. Whelan claimed that the slugs’ marks in the door were too low to have come from shots to Lennon’s shoulder.

Whelan also questioned Chapman’s own recollection of the night’s events.

‘He could not coherently understand why he felt compelled to shoot John Lennon – Chapman did not remember pulling the hammer or aiming,’ said Whelan.

‘All he could remember was a voice in his head saying, “do it do it”. NYPD Lieutenant Arthur O’Connor, stated that Chapman appeared “programmed” on the night he shot Lennon.’

Chapman, even now, is adamant that he shot John Lennon four times in his back from five attempts. But Mr Whelan said: ‘It’s something I suggest, from first-hand medical testimony, he could not have credibly done.

‘Therefore, we can assume that Chapman was possibly having some kind of psychotic episode, which enabled him to think he was doing something he couldn’t have done.’

Although a post-mortem examination was carried out on Lennon’s body, the autopsy was performed by the controversial New York City Chief Medical Officer, Elliot Gross, and his report has never been released to the public.

Gross had a reputation for running a chaotic office and was later investigated over allegations of misconduct, misleading causes of deaths, and covering up evidence of police brutality. He was dismissed in 1987, though later cleared of 11 charges of negligence, misconduct, and incompetence.

Mr Whelan alleges that key information surrounding the murder was ‘hushed up’ by the NYPD and the District Attorney’s office, including 122 unidentified pills found in Chapman’s hotel room, which were supposedly sent off to a lab for drugs analysis. The results have never been revealed.

The various items found by the police which were made public are listed on a typed docket, including an expired passport, a pocket bible and a Wizard of Oz placemat. Whether Chapman’s death list was found in the hotel room isn’t clear, but it is not listed on the docket.

Having obtained Detective Hoffman’s original notebook and other documents associated with the case, Mr Whelan pointed out that no single eyewitness, including Yoko Ono, saw Lennon being shot by Chapman.

Ono’s exact location when John was shot, has changed several times, via various witness statements she gave around the time of her husband’s murder, understandably, no doubt, given her emotional turmoil.

Much more information surrounding Chapman and the murder would no doubt have emerged – and the evidence tested – in court, but no trial ever took place – and that in itself is suspicious, according to Mr Whelan.

‘Chapman’s lawyers were aiming for a trial and an insanity plea, but out of the blue, Chapman decided he wanted to forgo a trial and plead guilty, claiming that “a little voice inside his head’ told him to do this,” said Whelan.

Crucially, says Whelan, that volte-face only came after Chapman was visited in his cell by various psychiatrists employed by his defence lawyers.

Three of those doctors had been involved in hypnosis, and one of them, Dr Milton Kline, worked with the CIA on its notorious ‘MK Ultra’ mind control programme, which the Hollywood movie the Manchurian Candidate was loosely based on.

In 1979, Kline boasted in a TV documentary that a man could be programmed to murder via hypnosis, via the MK Ultra programme.

Why Kline, along with two other experts in hypnosis, was asked by the lawyers to meet Chapman, is not clear, though it is not impossible that the defence was already considering putting forward the notion that their client was hypnotised into carrying out his crime.

Items found in Chapman's room by the police which were made public are listed on a typed docket (pictured), including an expired passport, a pocket bible and a Wizard of Oz placemat

A crowd gathers look outside the Dakota Building on December 9, 1980 following the shooting of former Beatle John Lennon the night before

The steps leading to the Dakota Building overlooking New York's Central Park, where Lennon lived with his wife Yoko Ono

Another defence psychiatrist (and law professor) Bernard Diamond, who also examined Chapman, gave expert testimony along similar lines in the case of Sirhan Sirhan, who gunned down Senator Robert Kennedy in 1969.

But if Chapman were, as Whelan suggests, a patsy – or not even the shooter at all – who else would wish Lennon dead?

That, according to Whelan, can be traced right back to Lennon’s infamous 1966 quote in an interview that the Beatles were ‘more popular than Jesus’. The reaction in the Southern Bible Belt was literally incendiary, with records publicly burned and radio stations banning The Beatles songs during their US tour, despite apologies from Lennon.

Neither he nor The Beatles ever toured again.

US Intelligence agencies secretly monitored John Lennon for many years and are still concealing hundreds of pages of secret documents on him, says Whelan.

In November 1980, the newly-elected US President Ronald Reagan’s foreign policy facilitators would have known that John Lennon was a potential strong and influential future voice against any future militaristic foreign ambitions.

Added: Whelan: ‘John Lennon’s murder meant that no celebrity voices with any weight, would be heard against Reagan’s ambitions and used as a potential opposition rallying cry.

‘Could Lennon’s famous criticism of Christianity and Richard Nixon have possibly played a part in his murder, and could Christian groups associated with Chapman have deliberately, or perhaps inadvertently, programmed and groomed him to be an assassin?’

Chapman, now aged 67, first became eligible for parole in 2000 after serving twenty years in prison, much of it in solitary confinement, for his own protection, though his wife Gloria, who lives in Hawaii, is allowed regular conjugal visits to his New York prison.

Since 2000, the Parole board has denied Chapman parole every two years, a total of twelve times. Before his first parole hearing, Yoko Ono wrote to the board requesting that Chapman should remain behind bars for the rest of his life.

Green Haven Correctional Facility - where Mark David Chapman is incarcerated for killing John Lennon

Whelan concluded: ‘I think Mark Chapman was potentially shooting a gun or thinking he was shooting a gun possibly blanks.

‘He thinks he’s done something he couldn’t have possibly done — therefore, the only conclusion I can come to is there might have been a second shooter or it was highly likely there was a second shooter in the vestibule area on the stairs, shooting John in a close group pattern in his upper left chest area.

‘When I spoke to the doctors and nurses at the time who treated John – and they saw his wounds many times – they all agree that whoever shot John was very close to him and standing in front one or two feet away.

‘And they managed to achieve a very professional grouping around John’s left chest area above his heart.

‘It’s almost impossible for Mark Chapman to do that from where he was and it was dark. He was 20 to 25 feet away from John.

‘It’s a disturbing, troubling assessment, I’m well aware of that, but I can see no other explanation for John’s wounds.’

A friend of Liam’s has now told the publication: ‘It doesn’t come as a huge surprise — his life-style has been on a bit of a downward spiral for a while.’

‘His partying since the band’s break could well be a reaction to this.’

It comes after Liam’s distraught mother fought back tears today as she revealed how the superstar’s family are all ‘worried sick’ over her son’s emergency dash to hospital.

Speaking from her three-storey, £360,000 detached home near Wolverhampton, Karen Payne, said: ‘We are all worried sick about it but we just have to get on. It’s horrible – him being all the way over there.

‘He’s in Milan and it sounds like he’ll be there for a week. I feel helpless’

The 62-year-old added: ‘All we can really do is sit it out here and hope for the best. There is nothing we can do. We feel helpless.

‘It’s such a horrible situation and we just hope he’s in the best place possible.’

The singer was rushed to hospital during a romantic holiday with his girlfriend after suffering with agonising kidney pain.

Liam, 30, fell ill on a trip to Lake Como in Italy with girlfriend Kate Cassidy , The Sun reports.

He announced last month that he was cancelling a tour in South America due to a ‘serious kidney infection’ which previously left him in hospital.

Insiders report that the star was celebrating his one-year anniversary with Kate when he fell ill at their holiday property and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance.

He is said to be currently in hospital and will stay for several days.

A source said: ‘Liam is in a bad way but he’s in the best place he can be and finally doctors will be able to get to the bottom of what is going on.

‘Naturally he is gutted that his and Kate’s trip to Lake Como has been ruined but at least she was there to help him when he fell ill.

‘Doctors have warned him not to expect to be signed off to go home for at least another six days.

‘They want to do every test possible to understand the issue fully but they now suspect that there has been an underlying issue for a while that has been getting worse.’

Representatives for Liam have been contacted by MailOnline for comment.

Last month Liam shared the heartbreaking news he was cancelling his upcoming tour after being ordered to ‘rest and recover’ by doctors.

Liam added a caption on the post reading: ‘It’s with a heavy heart I have to tell you that we have no other choice but to postpone my upcoming tour of South America.

‘Over the past week I’ve been in hospital with a serious kidney infection, it’s something I wouldn’t wish on anyone, and doctors orders are that I now need to rest and recover.

‘I was beyond excited to come play for you guys. To all of you who have bought tickets: I’m so sorry.

‘We’re working to re-schedule the tour as soon as we possibly can, but for now we will be refunding the tickets – so please look out for updates from your point of purchase.

‘Thanks as always for the love and support, and look forward to seeing you soon.’

Sharing a video to announce the news, Liam added: ‘This really is the last news I want to be telling you but basically I’ve been a little bit unwell recently.

‘I ended up in hospital with a bad kidney infection. We started rehearsals and I’ve been advised that now is really not the right time to be travelling on the road while I recover from this.

‘I’ve got the best people around me at home trying to help me recover as we speak, but yeah we’re gonna have to reschedule the tour.’

In July the former One Direction star opened up about his mental health and revealed doctors diagnosed him with ‘a couple of conditions’ after he spent some time in a wellness clinic in the US last year after hitting ‘rock bottom’.

The singer shared candid Instagram Stories post where he said he was having a tough day and family and friends could see he was still struggling.

Liam described ‘manic’ instances in his life and his difficulty in maintaining sober during ‘super low’ moments.

Before adding: ‘Luckily I have some amazing people around me that kind of look after me but I am sure they can see it in me too that I’m ‘not really here”’

He said: ‘John had these horn-rimmed glasses at the time and if ever there would be a girl coming round John would whip his glasses off and put them in his pocket and squint as she went by.

‘And I would say, you look pretty good, the glasses are good, no, but when Buddy came along the glasses stayed on…

‘It was like Harry Potter with all the kids.’

Reflecting on Buddy in the show, Paul added: ‘Buddy Holly to us was amazing for a number of reasons.

‘On a musical level he sang and played guitar, Elvis just sang and Scotty Moore played guitar.

‘He not only played guitar, he played the solos. Normally if you played guitar there was another guy in the group who was the lead guitar who played the solos, but Buddy sang, played guitar and played the solos.

‘He also wrote the stuff. So this was like all-inclusive one-man band and we really thought that was great. We thought this is what we have to do.’

Holly’s work had a strong influence on The Beatles, with their name intended to be a homage to Holly’s backing band The Crickets.

Paul said: 'John had these horn-rimmed glasses at the time and if ever there would be a girl coming round John would whip his glasses off and put them in his pocket' (top L-R Paul and Ringo Starr, bottom L-R George Harrison and John)

Sir Paul, whose music publishing company owns the rights to Holly’s work, previously organised an annual festival in the singer’s honour, dubbed Buddy Holly Week, which ran from 1976 to 1999.

The programme will also feature a specially remastered version of a Holly’s song It’s So Easy recorded by Denny Laine, which Sir Paul provided to the show.

In the programme Harris introduces the record, saying: ‘Paul has also reminded us about a special album from 1977 from his great friend and musical collaborator Denny Laine, who sadly passed away in December, Holly Days.

‘He (Paul) has given us a special remastered version of It’s So Easy. Recorded in Rude Studios, Scotland, with Paul laying down the basic tracks, including some overdubs, on his four-track recorder.

‘Denny and Linda McCartney added some instrumental parts and all three joined in on the vocals. Denny sang lead and the McCartneys harmonised.’

The show, titled Listen To Me, presented by Bob Harris, is on BBC Radio 2 from 1am on Saturday February 3 and will be available on BBC Sounds.

Jimmy Carr exposes plastic surgery his doctor refuses to do – and Liam Payne had it done

Beloved comedian Jimmy Carr has lifted the lid on the cosmetic procedure his surgeon refuses to give him after his “mid-life crisis” during the global pandemic in 2020

Jimmy Carr has lifted the lid on the cosmetic procedures his plastic surgeon refuses to give him – but one lucky singer has taken the risk.

Over the past few years, the 51-year-old comic has opened up about the various tweakments he has had done to preserve his signature good looks. During the pandemic, the dad-of-one made several sweeping changes to his appearance.

Speaking at the time, he admitted to getting Botox, fillers, and upgrading his smile to help retain his youthful looks. He confessed: “I’ve gone a bit crazy with it, I’ve got the new teeth and the new hair – I’ve had a proper mid-life crisis.

“Like, right, let’s get everything done.” Now the comedian has revealed one procedure that his surgeon refuses to perform on him, even though One Direction star Liam Payne has had it done.

During an appearance on the podcast Happy Hallow Jeans alongside hosts Tom Segura and Christina P back in November 2023, Jimmy revealed his next tweakment he hopes to one day get done.

He told them: “My plastic surgeon is pretty great. When I go to see my plastic surgeon he goes, ‘Nope’. Anything I ask him about he goes, ‘No, we’re not doing that’. I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’”

When he was asked what sort of tweakments he’d like to get done, he confessed: “I’d asked him about buccal fat reduction, one of the guys from One Direction had it done, I think its Liam [Payne].

“I’m sure you can get a picture up, but they take out the fat there [points to the sides of his mouth]. So, you go from having, I mean I’ve always had chubby little cheeks.

“It doesn’t matter how much weight I lose. I could be 50kg and I’d still have chubby cheeks. But they take out the fat from here [points to the sides of his mouth] so that you look chiselled and model-y.”

After describing the procedure, the editor showcased a before and after picture of the musician following his procedure. Jimmy gushed: “I mean look at this guy, he looks fantastic.

“But the issue is down the line everyone aged 50 goes, ‘I need you to get the fat back in there’ and it doesn’t look as good when you put it back in because that’s what ages you.”

It was at this point that the presenters reassured the star that he didn’t need to get anymore cosmetic work done. They insisted: “You don’t need anything done, Jimmy. You’re perfect.”

The comic couldn’t help but joke back: “You’re perfect the way [you are] after doing loads of stuff.” Speaking to Gabby Logan on her podcast The Mid-point, Jimmy shared what made him want to alter his appearance.

Jimmy insists his cosmetic surgery is simply maintaining what he already has

He explained: “I’ve had a little bit of Botox, some filler – everything I can get done. My face is now like Trigger’s broom from Only Fools and Horses, very little of the original is still there.” The comic insists it’s not about changing his actual face, but maintaining what he already has.

He went on: “Maintaining is the thing, I don’t think there’s anything you can do plastic surgery wise, or augmentation wise, that makes you look better. You can just sort of stay the same, that’s what you can hope for.”

The Wanted’s Max George has opened up about his feud with One Direction – and how Niall Horan was the “chilled one” in the band.

The singer opened up about how One Direction were The Wanted biggest rivals who always pipped them to the post the charts.

A row broke out between George and Zayn Malik after Malik called George a “geek” after he posted a photo of himself at a party with Usher.

Opening up about the spat, George told Ladbrokes Live: “Our rivals were One Direction and certainly at the start because we came before them. “We were the ones up for all the awards and having number ones and then they came along and cleaned up. We had a spat with Zayn and Louis, starting off online.

“We were offering to fight each other at Madison Square Garden and I was all pumped up waiting for him at the bottom of the stage. For me this wasn’t just an online spat. Security kept them at a fair distance…there was about twenty security there.

The row began during the Twitter spat between George and Malik.

“Does that mean I’m ‘in’? George responded, to which Malik replied: “I’m not sure why your still talking to me mate conversation ended when I called you a geek.

“Your display [picture] just how’s how much of a wannabe you are.”

George’s bandmate Tom Parker got involved, tweeting “I think “1 stripes” got his knickers in a twist bro”

Malik responded: “Mate, if I had a face like yours my hair would be the last thing I’d worry about.

“Let’s not even start discussing vocal ability boys. Would love to chat gotta run though rehearsals.”

George responded: “Enjoy rehearsals. Stay off the bud… It clearly makes u cranky,” before Malik said: “Alright chlamydia boy ;).”

One Direction member Louis Tomlinson then told Parker to “pipe down bad boy”, Parker responded by calling the One Direction member a “sass master”.

George later tweeted: “Tell me you’re problems without the 8 security in NYC… The only problem I have with you is the s**t banter. Grow up son.”

“I’d f**king love to, see you in new York big man ha u clown,” Malik hit back.

But now George said he looks back on the row and “laughs about it”, saying Liam Payne was a huge support to him after Tom died in 2022.

“I look back at it now and we laugh about it. I have gotten to know Liam and we speak and send each other little videos and updates now and again.

“Liam has been so supportive since Tom died and he came to his funeral. I have seen all the boys since that night and we just laugh now and think, “F**king hell, what were we at.”

“We were the older lads and thought these lads were piping up a bit and thought ‘Hold on a minute, calm down boys’ and then it got out of hand.

“Niall, Harry, and Liam were the chilled ones, whereas Louis and Zayn were the feisty ones and myself and Tom had a couple of those clashes with them. The four of us were like ‘alright let’s have it’,” he added.

Westlife’s Mark Feehily says therapy made him realise he was homophobic before giving him courage to come out

Westlife’s Mark Feehily has revealed how therapy led him to realise he was homophobic – giving him the courage to come out in 2005.

The Sligo singer said he hid his sexuality for so long and never dated men for fear of being found out at the height of the band’s fame.

Mark, 41, added: “I did some therapy sessions with an older lady, she was like my granny’s age group.

“Through therapy she put it all out on the table, there was the eureka moment when she told me, ‘Do you realise you’re actually homophobic?’

“I was like, ‘How dare you, I’m gay’, but she unwrapped the whole idea, I was like, ‘This is a joke, I‘m homophobic’.

“It was a big turning point in my head, it was the beginning of everything unravelling quite quickly.

“Not too long after that she was giving me my homework, which was to go home and come out to my parents.”

Opening up on BBC Sounds’ When I Was 25 series, Mark told host Vinny Hurrell everything was on hold before revealing his sexuality.

He said: “My life was really on pause behind the scenes until that happened. I was there, I was present, let’s say we went out to a club after one of our gigs, I’d have fun, I’d be talking to people, I’d form friendships.

“Being gay doesn’t define you but it’s also a huge part of who you are so I had that switched off or muted. It was locked away, I was living half a life.

“It was made less enjoyable because on the other side you have this success, screaming fans and huge record sales.

“People would say, ‘How could you possibly complain?’ but I said, ‘You know what would make it a whole lot better, if I could be myself and not be worried and scared.”

Revealing why he never dated men during the Westlife era, Mark said: “I came out to my family and friends around 2003 and then the lads in early 2004.

“I know there are gay pop stars out there who might be straight to the public or might sneak out to the gay clubs, I couldn’t I was so scared.

“If I was in some Indie band, yeah, but I’m in Westlife, we’re such a mainstream act.

“I had this guilt, I’m not the type of person to live a lie, I suppose in the end the only person stopping myself from getting out of the situation was me.”

If you had seen the four lads sipping pints in a Kuala Lumpur hotel bar, you might have thought – if you couldn’t see their faces – they were just four Irish lads, abroad for work, catching up over a beer; chatting about going home, about the families, wives, partners and babies they had left behind, about the future.

What you couldn’t have known – even if you could see their faces – was that these four fresh-faced young men with pints in their hands had just agreed to break up the most successful boyband in decades.

In doing so, they were waving goodbye to millions of euro; closing the book on a 14-year collaboration that had brought them 14 No.1 singles, 44 million album sales, 10 sellout tours – and riches beyond the dreams of (as their manager once labelled them) ‘some cute culchies and a Dub’.

Down the hatch: From left, Kian Egan, Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, and Mark Feehily reached their decision to quit in Kuala Lumpur

They were also turning their back on a £5m deal from RCA, the giant record company that also boasts talent such as Alicia Keys and David Bowie. And, of course, they were breaking the hearts of millions of fans worldwide – and none more devoted than those at home in Ireland.

But the truth is that the break-up of Westlife, while a shock to their devotees, had been brewing for more than a year. The group had been torn apart by concerns about their direction; a wedge had been driven between them by Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco; and they were finding separation from their families increasingly unbearable. Despite all the money, the adulation and the achievement, Westlife, quite simply, had had enough.

While all bands experience various strains and stresses on the way – U2 recently admitted nearly breaking up during the recording of Achtung Baby in 1991 – Westlife had proved remarkably resilient. They had easily weathered the loss of Bryan McFadden… to the extent that it was he who was begging to rejoin them last week. The fact that three of the members – Shane Filan, Mark Feehily and Kian Egan – were all from Sligo had given them a strong bond, without ever suggesting that the fourth man, Nicky Byrne, was an outsider. They were still selling out Croke Park and their lustre appeared undimmed.

During 2010, however, they began to have serious problems with their longtime label, Syco – owned by Simon Cowell, the most powerful man in pop. Even the fact that they were managed by Louis Walsh, a close friend of Cowell with an unparrallelled track record, didn’t help.

Westlife felt Cowell and his label had lost interest in them and were unwilling to co-operate with the singers’ plans. The band felt the last two Westlife albums, Where We Are and Gravity, contained some of their best work, so good they felt that there were three singles on each – but the label seemed unwilling to back them up.

The first release, Safe, limped into the British charts at No.10, their weakest-ever position. Beautiful Tonight had been earmarked as the second single but Cowell pulled the plug on any further releases.

‘This was when the cracks started forming within the band,’ said a well placed source. All four felt Gravity was an ‘incredible’ album but Cowell wouldn’t release any more singles. Cowell knew Westlife fans would buy the albums anyway so why waste money on videos and promotions for singles? It was February and the British leg of the Gravity tour was under way but only one single had been released.

‘Mark was very upset by this, having written on four tracks,’ said a source. ‘He desperately wanted the group to take control back from the Syco and made it clear to the others that if they didn’t leave, the band was doomed. So they phoned Louis and told him the situation. The future of the group and their friendships were in jeopardy.’

Family affair: Singer Shane Filan with his wife Gillian

As the band began touring Britain earlier this year, the atmosphere had deteriorated to such an extent that the four members were not leaving their dressing rooms. Because of increasing frustrations, tempers were often lost backstage before gigs. Shane and Mark had chartered a private plane to fly them home to Sligo each night after shows – allowing them to make it home no matter what happened. Nicky was spending more and more time working with 2FM on the radio and was in constant demand. Kian’s girlband, Wonderland – whose members included his wife, Jodi Albert – was on tour with Westlife, and the dual responsibility demanded 20-hour days for the singer, further fuelling stress. Shane, on the other hand, was preoccupied with his family as his daughter began school in Sligo.

At times, phone calls between the members ended in shouting matches, with Mark threatening to walk out on a number of occasions. Then, on March 14, a deal was struck with the record label – and it seemed peace had returned. After 10 years with Simon Cowell, Westlife were released from their contract. They would finish the Gravity tour and afterwards become free agents.

The singers had gained control of their music and could plan their own future. ‘It was like a blood transfusion for the four of them,’ reveals the insider.

Within days, they had lined up another label, RCA – like Syco, still part of the Sony family. Louis used his connections to set up a meeting, and it looked like the group’s fortunes were changing. As the band’s future became more secure, relations continued to thaw between the singers.

On March 25 they played the LG Arena in Birmingham, a venue they had performed at many times before. That evening, they met RCA to negotiate the terms of the album that would be Westlife’s next step.

As Wonderland warmed up the crowd, a party of five executives listened attentively as Mark, Shane, Nicky and Kian discussed a greatest hits project. Louis waited nervously on the phone, eager to find out how the meeting had gone.

Each member of the band would pick three songs for the record, along with four new tracks. These tracks would be worked on with producer John Shanks in LA and released as three separate singles. The record executives doodled on the paper tablecloth in the canteen. By 7pm, a deal was agreed – one album, a greatest hits tour and then a two-year break.

A grinning Shane was unable to contain his excitement as he talked of the new contract, sinking back in his dressing room chair as a broad smile crept across his face.

‘It’s unreal and we are just over the moon right now to have done the deal,’ he said.’We are still in negotiations with RCA over the finer points but we have signed with them for the Greatest Hits. It’s a trial period because we aren’t going to sign our life away to someone we don’t know. We need to see that this is the right place and home for Westlife.’

It was a statement that would prove prophetic – and one that hinted Westlife were no longer content to sit back and let executives manage their lives. The Gravity tour ended with four sold-out shows in Dublin’s 02, after which the band flew business class to LA and recorded their new tracks: Lighthouse, Beautiful World, Wide Open and Last Mile Of The Way. Mark and Shane co-wrote two of the tracks. But Shane’s foreshadowing became piercingly relevant in July, when manager Louis Walsh received a call from RCA. The label wanted to extend its relationship with Westlife – offering a £5m deal for a series of albums.

Split: The line-up before they became a foursome

Split: The line-up before they became a foursome

Louis was ecstatic: but the band was not. Intent on following their hearts and their own paths, Westlife saw a downside to the deal.

‘Louis called the boys to give them the news expecting to hear excitement,’ a source said. ‘But the new contract would have them back recording in 2012 and touring again in 2013.

‘They were exhausted. They had their hearts set on taking a break. Life on the road had changed. And while the conditions had greatly improved – they enjoyed the best tour buses, five-star hotels and first-class flights – their personal situations had altered dramatically. They weren’t twenty-somethings any more – they had responsibilities.

‘They were about to embark on a six-week tour of the Far East and the thought of working solidly for the next two years was too much to bear. Kian was going to be a father, Shane and Nicky were desperately missing their families. Mark, whose writing had taken him in a different musical direction, was keen to do other projects.’

They decided to call Louis and reject the deal. Their longtime manager already had an inkling that they might do exactly that. And he also suspected what would happen next.

Four-piece: Westlife perform live on stage at the Odyssey in Belfast, in March 2004. It was the first time the boyband have performed without Bryan

After spending literally all of their adult lives together, the four band members were keen to focus on their own families and careers – hoping to enjoy personal time that was not always overshadowed by the professional. The boys began to ask each other whether they should carry on as a band at all.
Shane was already homesick when a cyber stalker threatened his family at home in Sligo. His decision was crystallised – he wanted to leave.

Simultaneously, Mark was dealing with his own cyber stalker. He was forced to call British police after threats were made against him and his partner, Kevin McDaid. He also wanted to quit.

Kian was now focused on becoming a father with his wife Jodi, and he had just landed a job as coach on the new RTÉ talent show, The Voice Of Ireland. He wanted to leave, too.

Nicky’s stint on 2FM as a guest DJ had tapped into something of a talent and he found himself inundated with job offers. He was also homesick, missing his wife Georgina and his twins, Jay and Rocco. He wanted to leave.

So on that fateful night in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month, the friends decided to invoke the pact they had made when Brian left in March 2004. They had decreed that if one member wanted to leave, they would disband. And now that all four were ready to leave Westlife, the decision was obvious – and easy.

‘It was their decision, all theirs,’ Louis told the MoS. ‘That was always the way with Westlife and I had to respect that. Could they have gone on for longer? Most definitely. I would have liked them to take a break and come back with a covers album and a tour.

But they all want to do other things. They have ended it on their terms and remain close friends. Had they gone on longer, who knows if that would happen?

‘When the statement went out this week, I know that all four of them were hurting at the upset they caused their fans. But at least they will be able to give them a proper goodbye. And who knows what will happen down the line?’

And even if they choose to do nothing but enjoy the comforts of family life, they will still be able to bask in their riches – and in the fact that five kids from unfashionable parts of a little country called Ireland became the biggest thing since the Beatles. Not bad for a few cute culchies and a Dub…
