    An Early Start

Born in 1955, Reba learned at an early age that she just might have what it takes to make money singing. When she was 4 years old, she earned a nickel singing “Jesus Loves Me” while standing in a hotel lobby in Cheyenne, Wy., where her father was competing in a rodeo. According to a 2018 Wall Street Journal article, she got the idea from watching her older brother Pake earn a quarter for singing “Hound Dog” for some delighted cowboys.

    Behind the Wheel

By 5, Reba was taking driving lessons out on the family ranch in Oklahoma, helping drive her father’s truck while he pushed hay off the back to feed the cattle. And when she turned 16, she won the title of Miss Ford Country thanks to her winning essay. Her prize? The use of a new ford truck for six months. And in that time, she put 18,000 miles on the car.

    The Family Business

Reba was born with the rodeo in her blood. Her grandfather, John Wesley McEntire, won the Steer Roping World Champion title in 1934. And her father, Clark McEntire, claimed the title in 1957, ’58, and ’61. “Daddy was world-champion steer roper three years. Grandpap was a world-champion steer roper,” she told CMT in 2011. “So we had champions in our family, and I consider my mama a champion for just putting up with all four of us kids.”

    Over a Barrel

Reba’s first love was barrel-racing, which involves riding a horse while attempting to complete a cloverleaf pattern around barrels in the fastest time, and competed at rodeos during her childhood. But her champion daddy got real with his daughter about her future prospects in the sport and encouraged her to pursue singing instead.

As she told CMT in 2011, it hurt her feelings, but she quickly realized she had a talent that would change her life. “When I got good attention from the singing,” she said, “I knew that was probably where I needed to land.”

    Broadway Debut

In early 2001, Reba starred in the Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun, with a performance The New York Times called, “Without qualification the best performance by an actress in a musical comedy this season.” The run marked her second time playing sharpshooter Annie Oakley, following the 1995 TV movie Buffalo Girls, which co-starred Anjelica Huston as Calamity Jane.

    Big Break

In 1974, Reba was hired to perform the national anthem at the National Rodeo in Oklahoma City. During the performance, she caught the ear of country star Red Steagall, who helped her record a demo and land a deal with Mercury Records. In 2007, the pair recorded the song “Here We Go Again” together.

    Backup Plan

While waiting to catch her big break, Reba enrolled at Southeastern Oklahoma State University with the intention of becoming an elementary school teacher, following in the footsteps of her mother. Of course, it was her minor in music that wound up coming in handy.

    First Love

In 1976, Reba married steer wrestling champion and rancher Charlie Battles, who was a decade older than her and who had two sons from a previous marriage. Until their divorce in 1987, the couple shared a ranch in Oklahoma. Upon splitting, Reba left her home state and made her way to Nashville to further her career.

    A Rocky Opry

When Reba made her debut performance at Nashville’s iconic The Grand Ole Opry at the start of her career in 1977, she almost wasn’t let in the door. Her booking agent had to make some calls after her name was erroneously left off security’s list of performers. And then, despite the fact that her parents and older sister drove 1,400 miles to see her, the performance was cut to a mere three minutes.

Why? A surprise appearance from Dolly Parton. Despite the rocky start, her relationship with the Opry remains an important one. She was inducted into the Opry in 1986. “The Grand Ole Opry is a home,” she said at the time. “It’s a family. It’s like a family reunion, when you come back and get to see everybody.”

    A Fancy Story

Reba’s 1990 hit “Fancy” may be one of the most beloved tracks in her discography, but did you know it’s actually a cover? The song, about a poor woman who turned to prostitution to build a better life, was actually first written and recorded in 1969 by Bobbie Gentry, one of the first female artists to compose and produce her own material.

“‘Fancy’ is my strongest statement for women’s lib, if you really listen to it,” Bobbie said about the track in 1974. “I agree wholeheartedly with that movement and all the serious issues that they stand for—equality, equal pay, day care centers, and abortion rights.”

    Tragic Loss

While on tour for her 1990 album, she suffered a great loss when one of her band’s two charter jet planes crashed near San Diego, Calif. on March 16, 1991. Eight members of her band died in the accident, along with the pilot and co-pilot.

“She was very close to all of them,” a spokeswoman said at the time. “Some of them had been with her for years. Reba is totally devastated by this. It’s like losing part of your family.”

Despite the tragedy, she took the stage at the 63rd Academy Awards just days later, on March 25, to perform her Best Original Song nominee. Her sixteenth album, For My Broken Heart, was released in October and dedicated to those who perished in the accident.

    No Faith

Back at the beginning of Faith Hill‘s career, she auditioned to be one of Reba’s backup singers and didn’t get the gig. The woman who did, Paula Kaye Evans, was one of the eight people to lose their lives in a tragic plane crash in 1991.

“Well, I didn’t get it because I wasn’t good enough. I don’t think it was because—I don’t think fate had anything to do with that for me. I wasn’t a great background singer and I didn’t get the part,” Faith told Larry King in 2006. “But the first thing I thought when that happened obviously is I thought about the families of those that were lost and I thought about Reba and Narvel.”

A year after that interview, Faith and Reba released a duet, entitled “Sleeping With the Telephone.”

    Acting Debut

Bit by the acting bug thanks to her music videos, Reba made her film debut in the 1990 cult classic horror comedy Tremors, alongside Kevin Bacon. She played Heather Gummer in the film, which told the story of a group of people living in Nevada fighting for their lives against subterranean worm-like creatures, and developed such a strong interest in acting as a result that she made it her second career.

    Reba by Any Other Name…

When Reba’s eponymous sitcom debuted on The WB in 2001, it almost did so by a different name. When the show was developed and pitched to the singer, it had been originally written with her character named “Sally.” She then convinced producers that fans would respond better if the show used her real name, and Reba Nell Hart was born. (Nell is also Reba’s actual middle name.) The show ran until 2007, so looks like she was right.

    Missed the Boat

Reba’s acting career almost took off in a huge way in the mid-’90s when director James Cameron cast her as the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown in his epic blockbuster Titanic. However, when it became clear that production on the film would extend well beyond initial plans, she was forced to turn the role down as she had previously scheduled concert engagements that conflicted. The role, of course, went to Kathy Bates. A decade later, Reba and Kathy teamed up for the 2006 adaptation of Charlotte’s Web, lending their voices to Betsy and Bitsy.

My Son, the Race Car Driver

Reba’s son with ex-husband Narvel, 33-year-old Shelby Blackstock, began began a career as a race car driver in 2011. A decision that made his mama want to pass out.

“When I first went to the Daytona Speedway and he was racing at Daytona, you know, they drop that green flag and here they come, racing around,” she said during a 2018 interview on The Rachel Ray Show. “And I was sitting there filming him, and all could see was his car, and then underneath the helmet was this little bitty baby face! It just broke my heart! I was like, ‘Ahh!’”

    What a Hoax

In 2012, Reba found herself the subject of a bizarre story circulating on the internet that claimed the icon had plunged to her death while filming a movie in a mountainous region of Austria. “There is a rumor going around that I died after falling off a mountain in Austria yesterday while shooting a movie,” she wrote on Twitter. “While I would love to be shooting a movie in Austria, I definitely did not fall off a mountain! Nor am I dead! I am alive and kicking!!!”

“Oh well,” she added. “Have a great day.”

    When Friends Become Family

When Kelly Clarkson married now ex-husbad Brandon Blackstock in 2013, the OG American Idol became family with Reba, as the country icon had been married to Narvel Blackstock, Brandon’s father, since 1989. “Thrilled to death, to have my buddy as my daughter-in-law,” Reba told E! News at the time. “I mean, who could ask for more?”

She and Narvel have since split.

It’s part of my story, and I’m so excited to now be part of theirs,” she said in a press release. “I’ve held a lot of roles in my life—sort of like the Colonel himself—but this is certainly the most unique one yet.”

Here’s your one chance, Reba McEntire — don’t let Blake Shelton down!

In a new interview with Extra, Shelton voiced his feelings about the country legend joining The Voice for season 24 alongside returning coaches John Legend, Niall Horan and Gwen Stefani following the “God’s Country” singer’s exit from the competition series.

“Well there’s a couple of things about Reba that makes her so special,” Shelton, 46, told the outlet. “First of all, she’s just so authentic. I don’t know anybody country, or on the planet, [who is more authentic than] Reba, and that’s just the truth, but the other thing is her talent.”

He added that McEntire, 68, “was born with this raw, natural talent that’s just unbelievable.”

“People will finally maybe start to realize what an incredible vocalist she is,” predicted Shelton. “I shouldn’t say that; millions of us already know that. But so many more people are going to realize what an incredible vocalist she is because she’s going to, as a coach on this show, perform at times, you know, and it’s just, it’s shocking what an incredible singer she is.”

McEntire is no stranger to The Voice — she’s previously appeared on the show as an advisor to the coaches and is currently acting as this season’s mega mentor.

Speaking to PEOPLE on set of the show earlier this week, she opened up about preparing to become a coach.

“The country lane — I’m taking over for Blake so I’m gonna represent country music. [He’s got] big boots. I don’t know what size those boots are, but they’re big, so I’m gonna really work hard to make him proud,” said McEntire of Shelton, who is wrapping up his time as a coach on the show after 23 seasons.

The “Fancy” performer’s also got fierce competition in Shelton’s wife Stefani, who’s returning as a coach for the seventh time. “I do understand that I need to go razzle-dazzle with Gwen being on there,” says McEntire. “Gwen’s always got the nicest outfits, so I really need to step up my game on that.”

Elsewhere in the interview, she spoke about the other coaches that’ll sit beside her on the panel. “John and Niall [are] all really funny and clever, and always have so many smart things to say, so I’ve got my work cut out for me,” says McEntire.

She continued, “I’m most excited about basically getting started, and I’m sure that I’ll have lots of help, lots of advice, lots of people coming around saying, ‘You can do this. You can do that.’ And I’m not afraid at all. I think it’ll be a very fun adventure.”

In a new interview with Today with Hoda & Jenna, the Queen of Country opened up about how she nearly quit music after her mom Jacqueline’s death from cancer in March 2020.

McEntire, 68, recalled looking through her parents’ belongings with her sister Susie after Jacqueline died and thinking about her future as a singer. “I was going through pictures. I said, ‘I just don’t think I’m gonna do this anymore.’ She said, ‘What?’ I said, ‘Sing,’” she explained. “I said, ‘I always did it for Mama.’ She said, ‘Oh, you’ll get it back.’ I did.”

Before the “Fancy” performer’s career took off in the ’70s, she and siblings Susie, Alice and Pake learned how to sing from Jacqueline, sparking Reba’s love for the art form. “She was really encouraging for all of us kids, whatever we wanted to do,” she said. “She taught us harmony.”

Throughout the children’s years in high school, they were known as “the singing McEntires,” thanks to Jacqueline — who wan’t afraid to let them know if they missed a note.

“Anytime anybody needed an opinion of who’s off — Susie’s on my part, I’m on Susie’s part — Mama would come in with her spatula after she was frying potatoes,” said McEntire, mimicking a pointing motion her mom would make with the utensil. “She would say, ‘OK, Reba, you’re on Susie’s part. Sing it again.’ We’d sing it, and she’d say, ‘Oh, that’s perfect,’ and she’d go back in and keep frying potatoes.”

This week, the Reba star released a new lifestyle book called Not That Fancy filled with recipes and stories about her life and career. The title arrived alongside a new album of the same name, which features acoustic versions of her hits as well as a brand-new song, “Seven Minutes in Heaven.”

“When you find a song that really touches your heart and chokes you up, I gotta sing it. I gotta record it, and that’s what you’re always looking for, is a song that touches your heart,” said the Grammy winner. “That way, when I sing it, hopefully it’ll touch your heart too.”

How the Beatles’ legendary career started

Manager Brian Epstein struggled to get the band signed, until they were invited to record their first single, “Love Me Do,” which was released 60 years ago.

On October 5, 1962, the Beatles’ official debut single was released. The song, “Love Me Do,” was backed on the B-side by the track “P.S. I Love You.” It landed in the charts and marked the beginning of a band that would forever mark music history.

But there’s a long backstory to the Beatles’ success.

    Becoming the Beatles

It began in 1958, when John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the music to “Love Me Do.” They were still teens, had known each other for a year and were regularly jamming rock’n’roll in McCartney’s living room.

They formed a band with George Harrison called The Quarrymen, which they renamed Johnny and the Moondogs for a music competition. They didn’t win it, but it nevertheless allowed them to find their bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe. They later completed their lineup with Pete Best on the drums.

After trying out different names, the band became the Beatles in August 1960.

    Coming of age in Hamburg

Following gigs in their home town of Liverpool, they landed a residency in the red-light district of St. Pauli in the north German city of Hamburg.

Rock’n’roll was all the rage in St. Pauli’s clubs, and the wild boys from Liverpool quickly became an insider tip.

After two months of all-night performances, they were thrown out of Germany. They didn’t even have a work permit: Stuart and Paul are said to have set fire to their accommodation, while George, who was only 17, was underaged and shouldn’t even have been allowed to play in clubs in the first place.

Meanwhile, Stuart got engaged to his German girlfriend, whom he had met in Hamburg, and he stayed on in Germany. Shortly afterwards, he left the Beatles altogether. In April 1962 he died unexpectedly from a cerebral hemorrhage.

After returning to Liverpool, the four other Beatles remained active and their popularity grew.

Their stint in Hamburg had allowed them to develop their repertoire and stamina that saw them performing for hours on end, putting on wild shows.

They became a regular band at The Cavern Club, a hip cellar bar in Liverpool.

They also kept returning to Hamburg, finding their way through St. Pauli’s wild nightlife among drug dealers, pimps, drunken sailors and brash bouncers.

It’s also in Germany that they recorded their first singles as a backing band, accompanying singer Tony Sheridan, to produce among others “My Bonnie.”

    ‘You’ve never heard of them’

In the autumn of 1961, a young man walked into a Liverpool record store run by a certain Brian Epstein and asked about an album that had been produced in Germany, titled “My Bonnie.” The 27-year-old record seller shook his head: “Who’s this by?” he asked. “You’ve probably never heard of them. They call themselves the Beatles,” the customer replied.

After this first request, more and more people came into the store asking for the same record. Epstein ordered 25; the copies sold out in no time.

That made him curious, and he went to a Beatles concert at The Cavern Club. At first he found it dreadful there: “…black as a deep grave, dank and damp and smelly,” he later decsribed it in his autobiography, “A Cellarful of Noise.”

He wanted to leave immediately, but he found the Beatles so exciting that he stayed to offer to become their manager. “He looked capable and rich,” John Lennon later recalled. They started working together right away.

‘Guitar groups are on their way out’

Epstein bombarded major record companies with letters and recordings of the band, and in January 1962 actually managed to get an audition with Decca. But the label’s executive, Dick Rowe, didn’t see the Beatles’ potential: “Guitar groups are on their way out,” he is quoted as having said in Epstein’s biography.

Disappointed, the Beatles returned to Hamburg’s nightlife again. They played their first gigs at the Star Club.

But then, they received a telegram from Brian Epstein, who hadn’t given up on them yet: “Congratulations guys. Expecting recording date. Please rehearse new material.”

EMI Records wanted to see the band in London. The Beatles immediately traveled back to the UK and auditioned for EMI’s George Martin, who reacted politely but didn’t say anything at first.

Once again, the four boys and Epstein had to be patient. Their gigs continued to grow in size and popularity. They were named best Liverpool band by alternative music magazine Mersey Beat. They had their hair cut and started wearing suits.

Finally, at the end of July 1962, the long-awaited record deal came with the EMI subsidiary, Parlophone. Shortly before, John, Paul and George replaced drummer Pete Best with Ringo Starr.

On September 11 that same year, they hit the studio to record “Love Me Do.”

The moment is described in the documentary “The Beatles”: “They held onto their guitars as George Martin led them into the studio. ‘Tell me if there’s anything you don’t like,’ Martin said. George Harrison replied : ‘Well, for a start, I don’t like your tie’.”

Unfazed by Harrison’s cheekiness, Martin immediately told them what needed to be done: He said Ringo Starr wasn’t good enough for the band. He put studio musician Andy White on the drums and let Ringo play the maracas and a tambourine instead.

They needed several takes for “Love Me Do” and went on to record other songs, including what would become the B-side track, “P.S. I Love You.”

Martin knew that “Love Me Do,” with its iconic harmonica theme recorded by John Lennon, should be the first single.

The song was initially only moderately successful, peaking at number 17 in the British charts.

But Martin had the right instincts and Epstein’s persistence paid off. The follow-up single, “Please Please Me,” reached number 1 in the UK charts in February, 1963. And when “Love Me Do” was released in the United States in 1964, it also became a number 1 hit.

And the rest is pop music history.

John Lennon: Son Julian discusses Yoko Ono in 1999

John Lennon had two children, but with different women and in very different ways. He made some somewhat clumsy comments about his eldest child, Julian, while waxing lyrical about his youngest, Sean. This could cause some deep-seated sibling rivalry – so do the pair get on?

Do Julian and Sean Lennon get on?

Brothers Julian and Sean Lennon are said to be pretty close.

When he was still alive, John opened up about his relationship with his sons but revealed it was very different.

Speaking about Julian, John told Playboy in 1980: “90 percent of the people on this planet, especially in the West, were born out of a bottle of whiskey on a Saturday night, and there was no intent to have children.”

“So 90 percent of us… that includes everybody… were accidents. Julian is in the majority, along with me and everybody else.

“Sean is a planned child, and therein lies the difference. I don’t love Julian any less as a child.”

John was hugely fond of his son with Yoko Ono, and even wrote songs about him as well as dedicating himself as a stay-at-home dad.

John left all his estate to Yoko and Sean, cutting his eldest son out of his will entirely, which forced Julian into a court battle with Yoko to gain some of his father’s assets, ending with him being granted an unspecified sum.

However, despite all these rivalries, Julian and Sean seem close having posted images of each other online and spoken highly of each other.

Julian told SiriusXM in April 2019: “Sean’s an amazing guitarist. He’s coming along fantastically as a singer and songwriter, too. That excites me.

“We’ve talked about working together; I’m sure we will… I think we have the same sensibilities in many respects.”

He also spoke out about this in an interview with Express.co.uk, also mentioning his relationship with Yoko.

Julian said: “I think the key point to all this for me at least has been Sean. If I hurt Sean’s mother then I hurt Sean.

“It’s a roundabout way of thinking about things but because I love Sean so much I just don’t want to hurt him. I can get over it. I have got over it.”

However, it seems Julian and Yoko have buried the hatchet, with her declaring at Sean’s photography exhibition: “Julian is the biggest thing in our family.”

Sean added: “Julian is the reason I started playing music. Because when I was a kid, when his first record, Vallotte hit the charts, it was the biggest thing…”

They’re four of the most famous musicians in history, regarded as one of the most influential bands of all time.

But outside of their careers as rockstars, all four of The Beatles were fathers – with the fab four sharing 11 children between them.

From household name Stella McCartney – who has designed royal wedding dresses and Olympic outfits  – to the lesser known Jason Starkey who has followed in his father Ringo’s drummer footsteps, all the the band’s offspring have paved their way in creative fields.

Here, FEMAIL reveals how the Beatles’ kids have become potters, activists and composers…

JOHN LENNON: Two sons Julian Lennon and Sean Lennon, both musicians, who became ‘the most important people in the world to one another’ after strained childhood apart

John Lennon had two sons, Julian, now 58, with his first wife Cynthia and Sean, 46, with his second wife Yoko Ono.

The half-brothers have followed in their father’s footsteps, both working as musicians. Sean was only five when John was killed in 1980, with Julian having to break the news to him.

Despite a strained relationship growing up, last year they shared a selfie on a road trip in California.

Julian, who also works as a photographer, has made peace with the partial estrangement from his father before his death. And it seems his friendship with Sean is going some way to provide the paternal relationship that both men have missed so deeply.

He now says, Sean is ‘the one person I care about more than anything in the world’ and that he’s ‘here to love and support him, ’til the end of time and then some.’

It wasn’t always the case. John’s bitter divorce from Julian’s mum Cynthia, and marriage to Sean’s mother Yoko, led to strained relationships. Then, after John’s murder in 1980, there were decades of mistrust — plus a dispute over John’s £250 million legacy.

A mutual friend told told Daily Mail last year: ‘They have been friends for about 20 years, but are growing closer as time passes. People talk about them as if they were enemies, and there was a lot of pain, and a lot of that was very public, but not any more.

‘Yoko said to me about ten years ago: ‘You know that we are a family with Julian, and sometimes families have disagreements. Julian and Sean have always had a bond outside of all of that. They love each other.’

The public chapter of this brotherly reunion started at the LA launch of the three-part documentary, The Beatles: Get Back, which launched on Disney+ last year.

They sat next to each other at the screening and, afterwards, mingled at a party thrown by Sir Paul McCartney’s daughter Stella.

Julian, who has never married, lives in Monaco, while Sean is based in New York with his model girlfriend Kemp Muhl, 34.

Julian made his musical debut at age 11 on his father’s album Walls & Bridges and was the inspiration behind ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ (about a drawing) and ‘Hey Jude’ which Paul McCartney wrote to cheer him up when his parents were divorcing.

A renaissance man – he released his first album Valotte in 1984 and is best known for its lead single Too Late for Goodbyes.

Since he has released six more albums, and held exhibitions of his fine-art photography and has had several children’s books published

Julian, who also works as a photographer, has made peace with the partial estrangement from his father before his death. And it seems his friendship with Sean is going some way to provide the paternal relationship that both men have missed so deeply. He now says, Sean is 'the one person I care about more than anything in the world' and that he's 'here to love and support him, 'til the end of time and then some.' Sean and Julian’s last public meeting came when the two men recorded a conversation together in October 2020 for the BBC, to mark what would have been John Lennon’s 80th birthday. They reminisced, though some memories were maybe too raw to share.

They said how Julian taught Sean to play guitar to George Michael’s Faith, and was so much Sean’s ‘hero’ that Yoko flew 17-year-old Julian out to New York in 1980 to break the news of John’s death to the then five-year-old Sean.

Julian also revealed how his existence had been hidden at the behest of Beatles manager Brian Epstein – who was also his godfather.

Art student Cynthia and baby Julian, born at the start of Beatlemania in 1963, lived in obscurity as John toured the world.

His secret family first came to light in 1966 when Cynthia was photographed pushing a pram. Months later, the marriage was doomed when John met Yoko Ono at an art show.

He moved to New York with Yoko when Julian was just five years old and made a cruelly distant parent. Birthday and Christmas presents were dispatched, unseen by him, from The Beatles’ London office.

Julian was taunted at school for having ‘walls papered with £5 notes’ but, in fact, he and Cynthia had no material wealth, and he had next to no contact with John.

When he was 11, Julian was sent to New York for a few, awkward meetings — Julian estimates he saw his father ten times in all.

‘I lived from birthdays to Christmas, just to be with him,’ he said.

The visits themselves were filled with erratic incidents. Once, John scolded Julian, telling him not to laugh so loudly as he might wake baby Sean. Another time, he offered him a joint.

Painfully, John was besotted with Sean  – who also has half-sister Kyoko from Yoko’s first marriage –  and had given up working, in order to be a father.

Julian previously  said: ‘When I saw the fact that, you know, he’d basically given up music for a couple of years to look after Sean, you know, that was — it was hurtful. I thought, ‘Well, why didn’t he do that for me?’ I was a bit jealous, but I never said anything.’

In another interview, he said he was angry about the neglect. ‘I felt he was a hypocrite. Dad could talk about peace and love to the world, but that peace and love never came home to me.’

In 1980, John was gunned down by Mark Chapman.  Julian was put on Concorde to New York. There, he found Yoko’s grief hard to handle. She had wanted to wait until Julian arrived to tell Sean about John’s death, and she wanted Julian’s advice on breaking the news.

Over and over, they rehearsed what Yoko would say. ‘I remember seeing the glint in Sean’s eye, when he actually understood what had happened. And then the tears started rolling,’ he said.

Deep in grief, Yoko asked Julian to stay with them in New York, but he felt that he belonged in Wales with his mother, so left. For the next five years or so, Julian had limited contact with Yoko and Sean.

Julian told an interviewer in 1985 Sean adored him for his physical resemblance to John, but sensed Yoko wanted him at arms length.

His first album Valotte was a hit, and the single Too Late For Goodbyes — in which he sounded hauntingly like his father — an international hit.

Julian dated Brooke Shields and Kylie Minogue and started partying. Meanwhile, Sean was at boarding school in Switzerland.

Yoko had been sending Julian dribs and drabs of money, but Julian wanted a settlement. It was some time coming and there was a big legal fight.

A deal settled in 1996 gave him a percentage of John’s royalties and a lump sum said to be £20 million.

As Julian reflected in 2010: ‘It’s just not worth the stress. I think the key point to all this, for me at least, has been Sean. If I hurt Sean’s mother, then I hurt Sean.

‘It’s a roundabout way of thinking about things. But because I love Sean so much, I just don’t want to hurt him. I can get over it. Have gotten over it.’

With homes in Monaco, France, LA and London, Julian drifted from place to place, holidaying with wealthy and well-connected friends.

He resurfaced in 1998 with an album called Photograph Smile. It was a modest success — but it was outshone by Sean’s first album, Into The Sun, which came out in the same month. Julian was sure it wasn’t a coincidence, and thought Yoko was behind the clash.

He also complained that three or four years could go by without contact from his brother. ‘If I move, I always give Sean my new number. I call him from time to time, but I never get a return call,’ he said.

It was 2006 when, after some prodding from Cynthia, the two men spent a few hours together in Los Angeles.

They found that they had much in common and, in 2007, went to Boujis nightclub in London’s Kensington.

Then, when Sean was playing in Prague later that year, Julian joined the tour unannounced and stayed on the musicians’ bus as it moved through Croatia and Slovenia.

Sean said: ‘How sweet is that? I am totally thrilled and deeply touched by this. It’s really fun having him on the bus. It’s nice to have some quality time with him. None of my friends are willing to rough it on the tour bus, so I am very impressed.’

That contact continued after the tour and, by 2010, Sean attended the opening of an exhibition of photographs by Julian with Yoko. Cynthia said that night: ‘I’ve never seen my son so happy as he is now.’ Julian chimed in: ‘There’s a lot of forgiveness now.’

Sean has continued to make music and tour, and Julian has moved into photographic and philanthropic work. He runs The White Feather Foundation, which works on environmental and humanitarian issues, and is behind a scholarship dedicated to women’s education founded in his mother’s memory. Cynthia died in 2015. He’s also written children’s books.

Both men go out of their way to support one another, and thoroughly enjoy each other’s company.

After their years of estrangement, each other’s company must be a greater treasure than they ever imagined.

In 2020, Julian revealed he was left ‘shaking inside’ following an emergency operation to remove a cancerous growth from his head. He visited his dermatologist just days ago, who noticed a lump on his head which he had had all his life ‘looked and felt a little different’ and she urged him to have a biopsy.

The results showed that the mole was cancerous and Julian immediately went under the knife in Los Angeles to get it removed.

Sean and Julian are also friends with the other children of the Beatles, having posted pictures with James and Stella McCartney in the past.

Following in the footsteps his famous dad, Sean has lent his talents as a musician and producer to a number of high profile groups, as well as boasting his own solo music material.

He has been a member of many bands including – Cibo Matto, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, The Claypool Lennon Delirium and his parents’ group Plastic Ono Band, and also has  two solo albums under his belt – Into the Sun and Friendly Fire.

PAUL MCCARTNEY: Four daughters Heather, Mary, Beatrice, Stella, and son James who all have their father’s creativity working in design, photography and music

With the most children of all the Beatles – Paul McCartney accounts for almost half of the second-generation of rockers, with four daughters and son.

He welcomed daughters Mary and Stella and son James with his first life Linda, who passed away in 1998 from breast cancer. He also adopted Heather from Linda’s previous relationship.

In 2002, he married Heather Mills and the pair welcomed a daughter, Beatrice in 2003.

Heather found fame at a young age and featured in the Beatles film Let It Be and documentary series Get Back.

Like many of the Beatles off-spring, she’s found a creative career and is best known for her work in pottery.

A jetsetter, she showed an interest in art at a young age – taking up printing at the Photographers’ Workshop in Covent Garden at the height of her father’s fame.

She’s also travelled to Mexico, where she lived among natives of the Huichol and Tarahumara tribes and spent time in Arizona to live with her biological father.

Following in her mothers footsteps, she’s also a vegetarian and animal rights activist, but shuns the public eye.

Mary McCartney: Photographer and vegetarian campaigner

Just like her mum, Mary is a photographer and long-term animal rights activist and campaigner. Now 52, Mary is married to her second husband, director Sam Aboud and has four kids with her first husband Alistair Donald. She's a Global Ambassador for Meat Free Monday and Green Monday.

Very close to her sisters, she regularly shares photos with them to social media saying how much she ‘loves them’.

Speaking to Weekend magazine last year, she revealed how her children are the biggest critics of her.

‘They’ll say, ‘How many bites do I have to have?’, but the key is getting them to help with mixing things and chopping stuff,’ she says. ‘If they’re involved they’re much more likely to be satisfying to cook for.’

She also shared how she locked down with her father.  ‘Dad recorded an album during the last lockdown. He would spend the day working on a song, then come back and I’d cook dinner and we would eat together. It was brilliant.

‘He’d play the song that he’d been working on, and he also asked me to take pictures for the album. It’s great.

‘He appreciates people cooking for him. Not everyone does, but when it happens it’s wonderful. It makes me want to cook more.’

Of course, the McCartneys have form as foodies. The four older children were famously raised as vegetarians, and Linda was a pioneering meat-free campaigner long before veggie diets went mainstream.

Mary not only followed her mother into a photography career, but she also inherited her foodie zeal and has two cookery books under her belt already.

She also has a TV show  Mary McCartney Serves It Up which features her cooking vegetarian meals for famous friends including Liv Tyler, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz and Nicole Richie as well as musicians such as Mark Ronson and Dave Grohl.

Her mother Linda died from cancer in 1998, aged just 56, which was devastating for her family. Replicating her meals was a way not just of getting them through difficult times, but of honouring her.

Food is the ‘key’ to human connection, says Mary.

‘A lot of my great memories are formed around food in the kitchen, sitting down with friends and family. It just makes everyone happy, the conversation flows.

‘I’m a bit like my mum in that I like the kitchen to be the heart of the home, with everyone wandering through, keeping me company and helping.’

No strangers to mingling with royals and A-listers, earlier this year she headed to COP26 with Prince Charles and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Stella is also a keen environmentalist and vegetarian – and has previously said she doesn’t wash her designer clothes because the chemicals are damaging to the environment.   She often encourages people to eat less meat runs her celeb-loved brand with a cruelty-free ethos and has never included leather or fur in her collections.

Outside of campaigning, she married British publisher Alasdhair Willis in 2003 and they share four children.

In December, it was revealed her salary rose to £2.7m last year, despite the firm claiming more than £850,000 in support from the government’s furlough scheme. The designer pocketed more than £220,000 more for herself in the year to December 31, 2020 compared to the previous 12 months, even though the business suffered a 26 per cent fall in sales over the same period.

On Boxing Day last year, she expressed her sadness that hunting trials still exists in the UK.  Elsewhere, she also partnered with Adidas and Team GB for the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

    James McCartney, Musician

James McCartney is the only son of Sir Paul, and his late wife Linda.

He has played on some of his father’s albums as well as releasing music of his own. After largely shunning the limelight, even working as a waiter in Brighton, Jams later followed in his father’s musical footsteps.

His early life was spent on the road with his parents as they toured with their group Wings. He later played guitar on Sir Paul’s records Flaming Pie and Driving Rain as well as The Light Comes From Within – a track he recorded with his mother before her death from breast cancer in 1998.

He released his debut single Available Light in 2010 before releasing his first album Me in 2013 and his second, The Blackberry Train, in 2016 – both co-produced by his father.

He previously said he had aimed to be ‘better than the Beatles’.

‘When I got to a certain age, I realised that I was somewhat better than other kids at school at guitar and took pride and enjoyment in that,’ he told the BBC in 2012.

‘I then dreamt of being better than The Beatles. I’m not sure if I can do that. If anything, I would love to be equal to The Beatles – but even that’s quite tough.’

He also revealed he was considering forming a group featuring the offspring of the Fab Four, including Ringo Starr’s son Jason, 54, Lennon’s youngest son Sean, 46, and George Harrison’s only son, Dhani, 43.

Previously asked if a new Beatles could happen, he said: ‘Yeah, hopefully, naturally. I don’t know, you’d have to wait and see. The will of God, nature’s support, I guess. So yeah, maybe.’

He said he was ‘up for it’ and added that Sean and Dhani had previously also shown support for the idea.

James, whose mother Linda died in 1998, was known to have fallen out with his father during Sir Paul’s second marriage to Heather Mills.

Previously asked about his relationship with his father, James admitted it had been ‘difficult’ on occasion.

But he added: ‘It’s amazing. Sometimes in the past, a few years ago, it can be [sic] difficult, it can be tense, like families can get. But beyond that it’s beautiful.

‘He’s a genius, he’s beyond genius, and he’s a big inspiration. Very intellectual and amazing at what he does, so it’s great fun.’

Four years after his wife Linda’s death, Paul wed Heather Mills. The duo expanded Paul’s family by welcoming their daughter, Beatrice, in 2003 but later split after six years of marriage in 2008.

Little is known about teenage Beatrice, who is still at school.

On being a father again, he told The Telegraph in January 2009: ‘I love being a dad. My typical morning these days would be to get up at 6:30 a.m., make breakfast, get Beatrice up, get her dressed and watch some TV.

‘I love every second of it and I’m not exhausted at all. It’s a thrill bringing up a young kid. It’s such an education. I’m a different dad now, but it’s good.’

Beatrice Milly, now 18, who was delivered at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in north London, close to Abbey Road, was named after Heather’s mother Beatrice and Paul’s aunt Milly.

A statement issued by the couple shortly after Beatrice’s birth said: ‘Heather and Paul McCartney are delighted to announce the birth of their baby daughter Beatrice Milly McCartney, who was born in London on 28 October at 8.45pm by Caesarean section.

‘The baby, who arrived three weeks early, weighed in at a healthy 7lbs, and both she and mum are doing well. Paul and Heather are ecstatic with the news. They said ‘She is a little beauty and we couldn’t be prouder’, reported the Irish Examiner.

It is thought Beatrice, who stays out of the spotlight, can play the saxophone and when she was younger wanted to become a marine biologist – rather than follow in her father’s musical career.

Despite their wealth, his mother gave him as normal a childhood as possible out of the public eye. Her determination was matched only by that of Dhani, who, like many of the Beatles children, felt the weight of public expectation and kicked against it.

He was educated at nearby public school Shiplake College and later at Brown University in the US, where he studied physics and design.

His first job was as an aerodynamicist for British sports-car company McLaren. He left when his father died of lung cancer in 2001.

He was also close to Paul McCartney’s children as a kid, explaining: ‘Of all of them (the Beatles children) I think I’m most similar to Stella and Mary. I really relate to the way they’ve dealt with their circumstances – they’re like big sisters to me.’

For a time, he even contemplated trying out for the Olympic rowing squad after falling in love with the sport as a boy growing up by the Thames.

In short, he had seemingly done everything he could to ‘not be a musician’ – but finally he succumbed, launching a musical career in 2006, playing lead guitar and vocals with rock band, thenewno2, saying in a previous interview, ‘It’s in the DNA, I guess.’

On his similar looks to his father, he told the MailOnline in 2012: ‘My dad used to say to me, ‘You look more like me than I do.’ You know, it’s exactly the best and worst thing about every day – comforting and sad all at the same time.’

And while he’s never cared for the limelight – as a kid he would tell people his father ‘pushes buttons’ – he admitted his father ‘taught me how to make records from an early age. I grew up in a recording studio.’

He was also close to Paul McCartney’s children as a kid, explaining: ‘Of all of them (the Beatles children) I think I’m most similar to Stella and Mary. I really relate to the way they’ve dealt with their circumstances – they’re like big sisters to me.’

He added: ‘I did rebel. I was the rebel in my family, because my dad wanted me to go and just travel with him. My dad would be like, ‘Sod your exams – let’s go to the South Pacific.’

‘You don’t have to burn books, you don’t have to rebel against teachers to rebel; to rebel is to truly own your own self. Rebelling in my family was going and getting on the river [he was a member of the famous Henley-based Leander rowing club] and doing courses and getting your grades.

‘I always knew that if I was going to do anything and be taken seriously in my life, I had to work and work very, very hard. Because you can get a foot in the door by being George Harrison’s son, but you can’t stay there.

‘It’s why I think I’m most like Stella and Mary McCartney. They’re the same. If you want anyone to take you seriously, first of all you have to have good grades or a really hard work ethic.

‘Everyone’s looking at me thinking, ‘He’s got it handed to him on a plate; he got that because of his dad.’

‘So if you do well they curse you, and if you do badly they curse you.’

Academically, he described himself as an overachiever, yet bizarrely he only ever aimed for second place.

‘Who wants to be number one? You don’t want to be the world’s best vet, because then you don’t care about the dogs any more because you’re the best. The second guy always seems to do better.’

He said his music was ‘a way of staying close to him’ – and that it was his father’s death that ultimately decided his choice of career.

Dhani married model turned psychologist Solveig ‘Sola’ Karadottir in 2012 before the couple split in 2016.The couple had no children.

Zak Starkey’s mother is Ringo’s first wife, former Liverpool hairdresser Maureen Cox.

He grew up in Sunningdale, Berkshire, at his father’s mansion, Tittenhurst Park, but played truant from the local school and was educated at home by private tutors, according to the Daily Mail in 2012.

Following his parents’ divorce in 1975, ten-year-old Zak was given his first professional drum kit by his godfather, Keith Moon of The Who, and took over the late Moon’s role in the band in the mid-Nineties.

He has also played with his father’s group, Ringo’s All-Starr band and in April 2006, he joined Oasis as their drummer.

When his mother Maureen was diagnosed with leukaemia, Zak donated bone marrow and blood platelets, but she died of the disease in December 1994.

At the age of 19, he married Sarah Menedikes, his sweetheart of three years, and they have a 26-year-old daughter, musician Tatia. The couple separated in 2006.

But in 2001, the tumour returned and she was again treated in American hospitals.

She became a recognisable face in 1989 when she appeared in an Oldsmobile advert with her father. The 51-year-old later co-founded a Los Angeles boutique called Planet Alice for 60s-inspired fashion.

But following the closure of the business, and having ditched her plans for a career in music, she went on to become a make-up artist and has been known to dabble with fashion design.

She lives in London with her boyfriend, the Kasabian guitarist Jay Mehler, who she started dating in 2006.

In 2009, she gave birth to triplets, Smokey, Jakamo and Ruby Tiger.

Along with brother, Zak, and sister, Lee, the Starkeys (Ringo’s original surname) were raised in a large home together.

But all of them went through a rebellious stage as teenagers, with Jason fined £125 in1986, at the age of 19, for stealing a car stereo and, in 1989, appearing in court twice on drugs charges.

Previously a drummer like his dad, albeit less successful than his older brother, he has worked with various indie bands, including his own group Musty Jack Sponge And The Exploding Nudists.

He once said: ‘Being Ringo Starr’s son is the biggest drag of my life. It’s a total pain.’

Jason and his wife, fashion designer Flora Evans, live in London and have three sons, Louie, 22, Sonny, 20, 13-year-old Rock, and Budy, 11.

We wish him the best of luck…there’s no hard feelings.”

“I know that I can’t take no more / It ain’t no lie / I want to see you out that door,” Chris Kirkpatrick sang as a member of ’N Sync in 2000 ― and he apparently felt that exact way about a certain Backstreet Boy.

Few fans of pop culture can forget the boy-band bonanza of the late ’90s and early aughts. With an abundance of groups like ’N Sync, Backstreet Boys, O-Town, Boyz II Men, New Kids on the Block and 98 Degrees, it’s hardly surprising there would be some rivalry both on and off the stage.

In an interview with Variety, Chris opened up about how his friendships with other boy-band singers have evolved over the years ― in particular, his friendship with the Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean.

“There was a time when I couldn’t be in the same room with this guy,” Chris told Variety. “But there’s always been a mutual respect, and now that we’re all parents, we’ve grown up. Reflecting on things, it’s cool to see what each of the bands did and how it all worked together. It really was this symbiotic relationship with Backstreet, 98 Degrees, us and even O-Town and other bands that came in.”

Fans of both bands will remember Chris and AJ as the notably “alt” members of their respective groups. AJ was almost always seen with a goatee and sunglasses and/or a hat, while Chris rocked everything from braids to spiky hair alongside earrings and a goatee of his own. Perhaps this prompted their beef?

The world may never know. At any rate, their rivalry has since been quashed, and Chris says he now counts AJ as one of his closest friends. AJ even referred to himself, Chris and 98 Degrees singer Jeff Timmons as “the Three Stooges.”

The trio have all taken part in a side band called ATCK (All the Cool Kids), which was formed by AJ and Brandon Mashburn (DJ Lux) and includes a rotating lineup of musicians, according to Variety.

AJ, Chris and Jeff even joked about doing a concert event that would make any J-14 subscriber freak out: a 98 Degrees, Backstreet Boys and ’N Sync World Stadium Tour.

While the mention of such a tour was merely a joke by Jeff, we can’t help but add that we think it’s an absolutely brilliant idea. Get to work, fellas.

    Backstreet Boys’s A.J. McLean Declares Himself a ‘F*g Hag’

    A.J. McLean isn’t gay, but he’s definitely gay-friendly.

The Backstreet Boys singer opened up to Pride Source about all things LGBT, including his gay friends, fans, and hopes for marriage equality. The 35-year-old, who memorably dressed in drag for a photo shoot prior to his 2011 wedding to wife Rochelle, even declared himself the “f*g hag” in his group.

“I’ve been in this business since I was 3 and I grew up in musical theater, so I was raised and surrounded by gay men and gay women,” McLean told the website. “I was hardly around anyone straight.”

As for what it feels like for gay fans of the Backstreet Boys wishing one of the members turned out to be gay, McLean said, “I think it’s awesome. It’s great. I’ve worn a dress at my wedding. I’ve worn 6-inch Louboutins. I’ve got no fear and no shame.”

Though he says most fans think it’s another member of the group, not him.

“There’s one [fan] named Matt and he’s a big, big Nick Carter fan,” he continued. “He’s this older gentleman from Tampa and he’s gay, and he’s been following us during this whole tour from China to Japan and now through the U.S. I think he really hopes that Nick might have a little bit of gay.”

McLean then added, “I don’t think he does. I’m gonna say no.”

While members of other boy bands, including New Kids on the Block and ‘N Sync, have come out in recent years, McLean says not to expect it from his own.

“Everyone always says, ‘When you look at a boy band, one of them has to be gay,’” he said. “No, they don’t. Instead of me being gay, I’m the f*g hag.”

The singer went on to say that he was the driving force behind the band’s new video for “In a World Like This,” which celebrates marriage equality.

“It stemmed from me personally,” he said. “I have a lot of gay friends and two of my best friends have been together for almost 10 years. And living in California, it’s been so friggin’ frustrating to me that they could not get it right; they couldn’t pass the bill. Then, literally, right after we dropped the video, they actually passed the bill [allowing LGBT people to legally married] in California, and I was just ecstatic.

“I just love the fact that people love each other, no matter if they’re the same sex or not. I think everybody’s equal, period.”
