Reba McEntire Reveals New Details About Her Marriage Before Divorce

Reba McEntire sounds like a woman who’d be wary of marrying a man she worked with again.

Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock were married from 1989 to 2015, and they have one son together.
Blackstock was also the singer’s manager.
Since divorcing, she’s dated businessman Skeeter Lasuzzo and actor Rex Linn.

Drew Barrymore asked the hard questions on the Drew Barrymore Show recently.

“It was a situation that was always business,” McEntire tells the host. “Whether we were getting ready in the morning, pillow talk, whatever, but it was business.”

This extended deep into personal time like vacations, where McEntire says she and her ex would unplug for a few days before reengaging over something like a tour, album or new venture.

After the divorce, McEntire made it clear she was not the instigator in their separation, telling CMT, “I didn’t want it in any shape, form or fashion.”

There have been the usual rumors of cheating that come with the end of any celebrity marriage, but nothing substantiated. If Blackstock was a bad husband, he was certainly a good manager.

McEntire’s career took off beyond country music in the 1990s and 2000s, with movie and television projects, a long string of American Music Awards and more.

Reba McEntire Brought to Tears on The Voice After Contestant Dedicates Audition to Late Grandfather

“When I sing a song and I’m thinking about my momma… I start gasping and I can’t sing anymore,” McEntire told William Alexander

Reba McEntire got emotional on The Voice after a contestant dedicated their audition to a late loved one.

On Tuesday night’s episode of the singing competition series, William Alexander auditioned with a powerful performance of Lizzy McAlpine’s “Ceilings,” prompting a chair turn by Chance the Rapper and McEntire.

“Singing that song, I was actually singing it for my grandfather who passed away last year. He always said that he believed in me and it’s just crazy being here now,” Alexander said after his performance.

McEntire, 68, then asked him: “Were you thinking about your grandfather?”

    His answer was yes.

“When I sing a song and I’m thinking about my momma… I start gasping and I can’t sing anymore,” the “Does He Love You” singer told him. “How did you do that?”

Alexander explained that he simply “pictured him hearing this and seeing me do this. It just made me feel so proud to be here.”

“Wonderful. You’re gonna have somebody with you all the time and now I’m getting choked up and I’m going to have to start talking very high but I thought you did a great job. Your voice is beautiful gift and I’d love to have you on my team,” McEntire concluded as she wiped away tears.

When it came down to his decision for a coach — Alexander said his “gut” told him to pick McEntire.

“I’m always really excited about working with young people. William’s voice was very smooth but different from anything else I’ve got so that’s why I wanted him,” she said.

In a post-performance interview, Alexander opened up about his choice.

“It feels so crazy that Reba got emotional. That’s when I really felt connected to her and I just knew that I had to pick Reba,” he said.

*NSYNC Talks Iconic and Never-Before-Heard legendary moments in the band’s career in celebration of their U.S. debut anniversary that even longtime fans of the band may not even know

*NSYNC Talks Iconic and Never-Before-Heard Stories: Horse Rides, Music Royalty and Life on the Road

Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, JC Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick share the stories behind some legendary moments in the band’s career in celebration of their U.S. debut’s 25th anniversary

It’s been 25 years since Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass and Chris Kirkpatrick were catapulted into pop stardom with the release of *NSYNC, their self-titled U.S. debut album as the celebrated five-part harmonizers.

And while the guys reflected on the album itself — which arrived a year after their Germany debut of the same name — in the March 27 issue of PEOPLE, not all of their memories made the cut in print.

So to further toast their March 1998 debut, and overall legacy as pop juggernauts, PEOPLE has compiled a few standout moments from interviews with Bass, Kirkpatrick, Chasez and Fatone for some added… pop.

From opening for Janet Jackson during her legendary The Velvet Rope Tour, to performing for Ariana Grande during a 1999 pay-per-view concert special, to falling off horses during music video shoots, *NSYNC’s run has been full of memories just as worthwhile as the road to its debut. Here’s a few that still shine as brightly as their voices.

The 1998 Disney Channel In Concert Special

Perhaps the most important gig during *NSYNC’s seven-year run came in 1998, just months after the release of the group’s self-titled LP, when *NSYNC headlined the fifth Disney Channel In Concert special. While the network wasn’t necessarily the children’s programming giant it soon became, the show was still — for Kirkpatrick — something like a “Super Bowl.”

After the album failed to gain charting success before the July release of the special, things seemed to be moving slowly for *NSYNC. But when the Backstreet Boys dropped out of the coveted spot, and *NSYNC took their place, it was a wrap. On July 18, 1998, *NSYNC in Concert arrived.

“It wasn’t until after the show was in the can and the ads and the buildup to it started to come. And that’s when I say the rumble really started to happen,” Kirkpatrick, now 51, says. “And it was like it’s sunny out and there’s butterflies and everything’s great, but you’re looking off and you just see the darkest black storm coming. And not to say that this was a bad thing, but it was just that massive energy that you could see slowly. You could see it in the distance making its way to you, and you knew it wasn’t going to miss you. You knew it was coming for you. So you’re like, ‘All right, we got to be ready.’ We did all this work in Europe and getting developed as a band, as individuals for this moment.”

Chasez, now 46, shares: “The immediate feeling after the Disney special was honestly one of relief. We put that show together very quickly and we were more focused on making sure our performances were up to our quality standards. Following that performance, there seemed to be this slow buzz that kept building more and more momentum, which was very exciting. That Disney special felt like a spark we needed to finally open the doors for us stateside.”

    Joey’s Video Vault

By the time the guys earned some much-deserved fanfare from the Disney Channel special, Fatone, now 46, had already taken on a new role in the group: documentarian.

During his interview with PEOPLE to celebrate the anniversary of *NSYNC, Fatone gave an impromptu tour of his video recordings — from behind-the-scenes clips of the guys goofing off to a never-before-seen look at the making of the “It’s Gonna Be Me” music video, shot by both Joey and his brother.

Fatone even carried a camera around in Germany, well before the U.S. debut. “Joey brought a video camera — this was the age before camera phones. Having a video camera, you had tapes and you had all this. So it was actually kind of work. And it wasn’t just something like, ‘Oh, that looks cool. Let me pull out my phone and record that,’” Kirkpatrick recalls. “This was making a conscious effort of, ‘OK, we’re doing this, let me film this’ type of thing. And we’d go over there and he’d tape a lot of stuff. And I was always like, ‘Dude, let me see some of that tape so I can show some people here what it’s like.’ So he’d give us VCR tapes or something. Friends would be around and you’d pop in this tape and it’s like you’re up there looking at their faces and suddenly they see this idiot who’s been their friend forever, no big deal, walk out in front of tens of thousands of kids just losing their minds and doing all… Throwing stuffed animals and shirts. And hairdos that were all like ours.”

“It is pretty crazy some of the stuff that I have,” Fatone adds. “But again, we were looking through stuff because I’m trying to put some stuff together. So finding that has been interesting. But also, it’s weird because I even have stuff of my kids. It’s just random s– everywhere, because it was all just on video disc, a lot of stuff. I haven’t gone through all of it yet, but I’ve gone through some of it. It’s pretty interesting.”

As for the material that Fatone has in his possession, there’s way more than just what he provided for the classic Reel N-Sync home video.

“I have stuff from when we were doing the actual photos of our Celebrity album. I have video footage of all of us doing the stuff in the grocery store on the cover, and then all the inserts where we were making the breakfast and all the other stuff — all that stuff is in there. So I have that, I have rehearsals with… Who do I have rehearsals with? With David Foster, we were doing a charity event,” he says. “There’s stuff where we’re doing breakdowns of one of the songs, singing a cappella. I have one where Bill Clinton is playing the saxophone and BB King is playing guitar, which I don’t even know what that was, when we were doing that — it was insane.”

    Ariana Grande’s Appearance in *NSYNC’s 1999 Pay-Per-View Special

In mid-1999, the guys filmed their Ft. Lauderdale, Florida tour performance as part of a pay-per-view special, but little did they know at the time that a certain fan in the audience would go on to become one of the biggest pop stars on the planet.

During the show’s performance of “Thinking of You (Drive Myself Crazy),” the camera cuts to a young Ariana Grande in the arms of her mother Joan for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment for the music history books. In the 24 years since that show, Grande has become a Grammy-winning titan and even brought four of the guys back together for a partial reunion at Coachella 2019, when she headlined the festival.

“It’s the circle of life,” Fatone says of Grande seeing them live. “It is, because now whoever’s watching Ari is going to be like, ‘I want to be that woman. I want to be up there.’ And whoever’s in that audience, that person is there at some point in time to get the chance — it’s there. It’s just a matter of finding the talent and getting the right connections, it is what it is. And it is weird to see… Actually a few people, or like I said, to see even celebrities come up and say, ‘Listen, I used to listen to your music when I was 8, 9 years old.’ You’re like, ‘Oh crap, I’m old.’ But it’s also amazing… I actually did what I said I was going to do. That’s the most amazing and rewarding thing for me in my life. I really think it is because it’s one of those things where a lot of people don’t get a chance to live out their dreams.”

Kirkpatrick adds: “We were not only enjoying it and hoping that our fans would enjoy it and doing it for them, but then now our fans are becoming these people as well. They’re giving back and they’re in the midst of… Ariana is in the midst of being Ariana. Some day she’s going to get to a point where she can stop and go, ‘Wow, look at not only what I’ve done, but who I’ve inspired.’”

    Justin Horsin’ Around on Set

How could anyone forget the “For the Girl Who Has Everything” music video? And how could anyone forget the sight of *NSYNC riding five horses on the beach?

While the video turned out to be something of a cult classic in the *NSYNC fandom, Joey tells PEOPLE about a specific moment on set where Justin’s horse had a bit of an attitude.

“None of us ever rode bareback before,” Fatone recalls. “I haven’t even been on a horse for that matter. I’m like, ‘I haven’t been on a damn horse.’ There’s no saddles, there’s nothing. You’re holding onto the horse’s mane and you’re gripping with your thighs for dear life. There’s one part where Justin actually falls off a horse — we have video of him falling off because it just started taking off. And he was like, “F— that.” He fell off the horse on the sand.”

*NSYNC was also one of the few acts — a young, My Way-era Usher included — to open for Janet Jackson on her The Velvet Rope Tour in 1998, in promotion of their debut. As Bass, now 43, tells PEOPLE, it was a moment to remember as a teen.

“I think the thing I loved most about Janet’s tour was being able to watch the show over and over,” he says. “We got to learn how a tour really works. Janet was a huge inspiration for our future stage shows. She is the ultimate entertainer.”

A Backstage Run-in with Paul Simon

Jackson wasn’t the only icon to give the guys a co-sign before their hiatus began in 2002. As Fatone explains, Paul Simon even offered some props to *NSYNC when he felt they deserved them.

Before the 2001 Grammys performance of “This I Promise You,” Simon gave Fatone quite a surprise. “We were doing a breakdown a cappella of the Grammys — we were at the Grammys, literally in our dressing room in a bathroom singing it because of the acoustics. So we’re singing, we’re doing this breakdown thing that’s live, there’s no background sweeteners or anything. And we’re rehearsing, rehearsing, rehearsing. And as all of a sudden, the door opens up and it’s Paul Simon. So we stopped, and I was like, ‘S—, it’s f—ing Paul Simon.’”

“He’s like, ‘No, no, no.’ He goes, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing.’ And he goes, ‘I came in here to listen to what you guys were doing. Really good stuff, intricate.’”

    ‘People Are Still Wanting It’

While there’s been no sign of a full reunion since the guys came together for their 2018 Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony (or since they last performed together for Timberlake’s mega MTV Video Music Awards performance in 2013), Fatone has an idea of what things would look like if *NSYNC got back on stage as a five-piece.

“I think it’s more of a celebration if we ever did something like that,” he says. “It’s more of a coming-together. I know people want to be like, ‘Just do a reunion, do a reunion.’ But I think we would want to do new songs. Why would we want to just promote… I get it, everybody loves it, but newer generations don’t know who we are.”

“It’s amazing, the whole *NSYNC phenomenon when you think about it — after 25 years, people are still wanting it and listening to it when we haven’t done anything as a group,” Fatone adds. “We did little spurts here and there stuff, but we’ve never sat down and went, ‘What do we want to do? Are we going to do it? How are we going to do it?’ Because everybody, honestly is doing their own thing and figuring their own things out.”

“So it’s one of those things where you try to really figure out what you want in life. I mean, I’m 46 years old. You got to look at New Kids — half of them are in their 50s, and they’re still doing it. Which means there is hope for us old people — there’s hope for old people that can do things like this — we can only pray,” Fatone jokes. “Doing this and listening to *NSYNC for 25 years is crazy.”

  • Paul McCartney Is Embarrassed By This Beatles Classic

Paul McCartney Is Embarrassed By This Beatles Classic

Despite Its Insane $30 Million Value, Paul McCartney Is Embarrassed By This Beatles Classic

Paul McCartney has his doubts about performing one of The Beatles’ most profitable songs ever.

    Highlights

Paul McCartney was embarrassed by The Beatles’ hit song “Yesterday” and almost didn’t record it, but it went on to become one of their most covered songs.
John Lennon felt that “Yesterday” was missing something, but still considered it a good song.
McCartney believes that “I Saw Her Standing There” is one of the best songs he’s ever written.

Paul McCartney is one of the most talented British musicians of all time. He’s also considered one of the most successful composers and performers of all time. After all, he’s written or co-written 32 songs that have topped the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold millions of albums across the world. Even today, at age 81, McCartney is still making new music and touring the world, with no plans to retire any time soon.

McCartney first rose to fame as one of the founding members and lead songwriters of the legendary band The Beatles. Despite their success, McCartney has admitted that he’s always been embarrassed by one of The Beatles’ biggest hits.

Paul McCartney Was “Embarrassed” By The Beatles’ Song ‘Yesterday’

Yesterday is not only one of The Beatles’ songs but also one of the highest-grossing songs of all time. Back in 2012, the BBC reported that this track was the fourth-most-successful song ever, having made a total of $30 million million in royalty payments.

Believe it or not, Paul McCartney came up with this song in a dream. “I was living in a little flat at the top of a house and I had a piano by my bed,” he said in an interview for The Beatles Anthology. “I woke up one morning with a tune in my head and I thought, ‘Hey, I don’t know this tune – or do I?’ It was like a jazz melody. My dad used to know a lot of old jazz tunes; I thought maybe I’d just remembered it from the past. I went to the piano and found the chords to it, made sure I remembered it and then hawked it round to all my friends, asking what it was: ‘Do you know this? It’s a good little tune, but I couldn’t have written it because I dreamt it.’”

As time went on, McCartney started to come up with lyrics for this song, choosing to picture a romantic relationship in its bitter end stages.

Related: Paul McCartney Scored His Biggest Overseas Hit With This Billboard Flop

However, once he had the final piece, McCartney found out that it was like nothing The Beatles had done before. He also didn’t want to play the song on his own “It was a little bit embarrassing,” he said during a 2021 appearance on The Howard Stern Show.

“I didn’t want to be the guy out on the stage on his own. When I brought it in, it was just me and a solo guitar. That was it. We elected not to release it as a single in England. Like, ‘Nah, we’re a rock group’. We liked it, but it wasn’t a big feature on our stage act”.

McCartney was so embarrassed by the song that he almost didn’t record the final track. But he was convinced to do it by producer George Martin, who also suggested a string quartet accompany him.

“I said ‘Are you kidding?’. I hated the idea. [Martin] said, ‘Well, let’s just try it, and if you hate it, we can just wipe it and go back to you and the guitar’. So I sat at the piano and worked out the arrangements with him, and we did it, and of course, we liked it,” he told Rolling Stone. This proved to be the right choice because ‘Yesterday’ went on to become one of The Beatles’ most covered songs of all time.

John Lennon Thought That ‘Yesterday’ Was Lacking Something

John Lennon on 'The Tomorrow Show'

When Paul McCartney first played ‘Yesterday’ in front of his bandmates, John Lennon couldn’t help but feel that the song was missing something. Despite this, he admitted that he always considered it a good song. In fact, Lennon even referenced ‘Yesterday’ in his song ‘How Do You Sleep?’, which was featured on his 1971 solo album Imagine.

“Paul wrote the lyrics to ‘Yesterday’,” Lennon said in a 1980 interview found in the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. “Although the lyrics don’t resolve into any sense, they’re good lines. They certainly work, you know what I mean? They’re good, but if you read the whole song, it doesn’t say anything; you don’t know what happened. She left and he wishes it were yesterday – that much you get – but it doesn’t really resolve.

Although he didn’t contribute to writing the song, Lennon still received the songwriter’s credit as part of his partnership with McCartney. Despite this, Lennon always recognized that this song was all McCartney’s work. “I have had so much accolade for ‘Yesterday.’ That’s Paul’s song and Paul’s baby. Well done. Beautiful—and I never wished I’d written it,” he said.

Paul McCartney Thinks I Saw Her Standing There Is The Best Beatles Track

    Paul McCartney performing

During his time with The Beatles, Paul McCartney wrote over 71 songs for the band. Some were big hits while others didn’t even make it to the charts, like the song ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer.’

However, McCartney believes that one of the best songs he’s ever written is none other than ‘I Saw Her Standing There,’ which was the first song on The Beatles’ first album.

Originally, McCartney had the lyrics “Just seventeen/Never been a beauty queen” in mind, but John Lennon didn’t like the second part. So, they ended up changing it to “you know what I mean.” “I was like ‘Oops, this is not good,’” he told Howard Stern.

“Years later, I was getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Neil Young was there … and I told him that story,” McCartney added. “He was playing that night … and he did the song and he used that line, of course. He was the only one to ever use that line, I think.”

Brian McFadden quit Westlife over moment of ‘shame’ – but lived to regret it

Brian McFadden’s flash point came when a record company request for Westlife made him ‘lose all interest’, and his four ex-bandmates have since vowed to remain a four-piece

Westlife were at the top of their game back in 2004 and just three weeks away from hitting the road for their fourth world tour when bandmate Brian McFadden dropped a bombshell.

He was done and wanted out with immediate effect.

Announcing his departure in an emotional press conference, Brian – who turns 41 today – explained he wanted to spend more time with his Atomic Kitten star wife Kerry Katona and their two young daughters Molly and Lily.

“It’s very, very hard to juggle two lives when you’ve got a family and being in a band like Westlife, it is a huge commitment,” he explained.

“To be honest for the last year, especially since Lily was born, I haven’t really been able to commit 100 per cent to Westlife and I haven’t been able to commit 100 per cent to my family, so I kind of felt it was unfair to both. I felt it was the right time to stand back.”

His bandmate Kian Egan choked back tears as he read out a letter written to Brian by Westlife, admitting his departure had knocked them for six.

“The last five days have been a huge strain on all of us and only us five in the room will ever understand that,” he said.

“We have enjoyed so many times with you on the road, we’ve shared laughter, tears, success, weddings, babies and most of all we’ve shared our dreams.

“Although we wish very much so that things could be different, we understand and respect your decision.”

They fivesome insisted there was no bad blood, and poured cold water on claims it echoed Robbie Williams’ departure from Take That which was sparked by a series of rows.

However, the four remaining members feared that like Take That – who split less than a year after Robbie left – the end was nigh.

And Nicky Byrne previously told The Mirror it took a lot of healing for the band to move on and confirmed that there could never be any going back.

“I don’t think that Brian would ever ask to come back to the band. But the honest answer would be that we wouldn’t have him back in the group anyway,” he explained.

“We all get on great with Brian but we couldn’t go back to having five in the group because it was such an upheaval when he left.

“We had to re-build and start from scratch and we’re a different group now. We’ve moved on and Brian knows that as much as we do.

“If you are asking me if we would let him re-join the group then the answer is no.”

He conceded: “At the time I suppose we did all feel a bit hurt and abandoned by the whole Brian thing because we were emotional about what was happening.

“We were taking a huge step into the unknown when Brian left. I think we all felt a bit vulnerable and scared. That was probably the toughest thing we ever went through as a band but it brought us closer together.

“I think a lot of people wrote us off and thought we would be finished – like when Robbie Williams left Take That.”

Meanwhile, Brian split with Kerry, embarked on a relationship with Australian singer Delta Goodrem and relocated Down Under.

And he also lifted the lid on his real reason for walking away from the band, admitting the flash point came when they were told to cover Barry Manilow’s hit Mandy.

Brian told the Irish Independent: “That was definitely a turning point. I’ve always been very proud of Westlife, and I still think that we never got the respect we deserved, but I was f**king ashamed of that song.

“From the second we went into the studio to record it, I lost all interest.”

Over the years, Brian has made several murmurings about wanting back in.

In 2015 he admitted he was kicking himself about the cash he’d missed out on, telling The Irish News: “Sometimes I think if I’d stayed another 10 years, I would have made a lot of money, but that would be the only reason for any regret.”

Westlife continued as a four-piece and have vowed to remain that way
And in 2018, Brian claimed they’d been offered a mega-bucks deal to reunite as a five-piece, but said the other four had snubbed him.

“I was offered a big multi-million pound deal. It was the other boys in Westlife who said ‘no’. They didn’t want me back,” he told the Irish Sun.

“How does that make me feel? It makes me pretty upset because I didn’t realise they still had those feelings towards me.”

That same year, Kian made it clear that there was ‘no feud’ but explained that as far as they were concerned, Brian had been part of a band that no longer exists.

He told the Daily Mail: “It’s a very simple case of Brian was a part of the band for the first five years and the band existed for eight years without him and when we got back together Westlife was a four…

“He’s part of a band that doesn’t exist. There’s no negativity, no bad blood. There’s only positivity and it’s a case that the Westlife we’re members of, is a four. That’s it.

Mark Feehily added: “We wonder when we’ll stop being asked about it because it was 15 years ago. There was never a question of Brian being involved.”
