‘Divorce was not my idea’: Reba McEntire says she didn’t want to split from husband of 26 years ‘in any shape, form or fashion’

Country music fans were shocked last August when Reba McEntire and her husband and manager Narvel Blackstock announced they were divorcing after 26 years of marriage.

The singer, who revealed on Facebook last October that the divorce had been finalized, now says said the split was never something she had wanted.

‘The divorce was not my idea,’ the 60-year-old said in an interview with iHeartRadio station CMT Radio Live. ‘I didn’t want it in any shape, form or fashion. So it was really hard to make the adjustment.’

She went on: ‘I just want everybody to be happy in their lives because our lives are too short to be miserable, so I just thought it was the best thing to take my marbles, go play somewhere else.’

The country music star credited her faith in God for getting her through the tough times.

‘I’ve prayed every day to help me have the strength to move one foot in front of the other, to continue on with what I’m supposed to be doing and why he put me on this earth in the first place,’ McEntire told the radio show.

McEntire also said she had a good team around her who are also making the transition and adjustments as easy as possible.

The former couple share a 26-year-old son, Shelby Blackstock, who is a race car driver.

Narvel Blackstock, 59, also has three children from a previous relationship including Brandon Blackstock who is married to singer Kelly Clarkson.

Reba McEntire brings George W. Bush to tears as she sings at friend George H.W. Bush’s funeral – after his other country star buddies The Oak Ridge Boys sing ‘Amazing Grace’

Reba McEntire brought George W. Bush to tears when she sang at his father’s Houston funeral on Thursday just moments after fellow country music stars The Oak Ridge Boys also performed for their friend.

McEntire sang ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ during the service at the St. Martin’s Episcopal Church where the late George H.W. Bush and his family worshiped for decades.

The younger Bush could be seen wiping away tears during her performance.

Moments earlier, The Oak Ridge Boys performed an acappella version of ‘Amazing Grace’.

They recalled meeting Bush at the White House when he was vice president in the 80s.

‘Would you sing me a few songs, I’m a big fan,’ they said of their interaction.

‘For decades we sang for him’ before adding that they would sing again for him at the service.

The band also joked that their friend, the 41st president, had fancied himself to be a good bass singer – but clarified that ‘he was not’.

The response drew laughter from mourners, including his son’s George W. and Jeb Bush who were seated in the front row.

Bush was a noted fan of country music and had developed a close friendship with both McEntire and The Oak Ridge Boys over the years.

Following his death last Friday, McEntire shared a number of photos of them together throughout the years with the hashtags #greatpresident #greatfriend.

Meanwhile, Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys said Bush had personally requested that the group sing ‘Amazing Grace’ at his funeral.

Allen told The Tennessean newspaper the band did an impromptu performance for Bush at the White House when he was vice president.

It sparked a decades-long friendship between them.

Allen said the band was honored to keep its promise to Bush to perform at his funeral.

About 1,200 mourners were expected to attend the Houston funeral service on Thursday morning.

Among the high profiles names to arrive at the church include Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger and singer Crystal Gayle.

Former basketball star Yao Ming and Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt were among a handful of sports figures to attend.

Baseball Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan and Jeff Bagwell were also seen arriving.

Bush was a fan of his hometown teams. He joined his son, former President George W. Bush, on the field before Game 5 of the 2017 World Series in Houston.

Reba McEntire Proves She’s a Worthy Replacement to Blake Shelton With One Hilarious Gesture

Blake Shelton may have left The Voice, but he left the show in good hands. So far, Reba McEntire has proven a worthy replacement on the show, and one gesture proves it.

In a behind-the-scenes video for the show, McEntire shows off her dance moves, especially one dance in particular. McEntire struck an awkward groove that host Carson Daly instantly recognized. According to Daly, it bore a very close resemblance to how Shelton dances.

He told her, “That’s exactly how Blake [Shelton] dances.” McEntire disagreed with the similarities. “It’s an Okie dance!” McEntire said explaining the origin of the dance. “That’s the Blake Shelton dance,” Daly remained firm. So, McEntire and Shelton at least have that in common.

    Reba McEntire Talks ‘The Voice’

McEntire has been quite vocal about her time on the show. So far, McEntire has really enjoyed working with contestants and encouraging them to grow on the show

“Working with the contestants, hanging out with the coaches. I’ve had so much fun. And the crew is wonderful. I’ve gotten to meet so many people that I’ll never forget,” she said.

It may be surprising then that McEntire had to be convinced to join the show. It turns out that Shelton himself played a deciding factor in McEntire ultimately joining the show as a coach.

“There were lots of little times where I thought this would be a lot of fun to get to do,” McEntire told NBC. “I’d gotten to do it before with Blake [as a Mega Mentor and Battle Advisor]. When we were filming with Blake’s team [in Season 23], he said, ‘You really ought to come on and do this. You’d have fun.’ He was really encouraging me to do it.”

“It’s a well-oiled machine, so getting in at this time is marvelous,” she told Newsweek in a recent interview.  “Everybody knows the game plan, from the crew, the producers. Everybody on the show is so nice, so sweet, and have been so helpful. I’m loving it.”

In fact, she keeps in contact with Shelton, saying the two have texted.”[We’ve done] just a little bit of texting,” she told NBC Insider. “No advice yet. I’ma pick his brain about it later. Once I’ve kinda gotten my feet wet.”

As for Shelton, while John Legend doesn’t think he will return, the country singer agreed he would return to the fold for a very specific reason. He would come back to be a mentor for Gwen Stefani.

THE Voice’s Reba McEntire and Dan + Shay have supposedly ruined the show after fans noticed an annoying habit.

A promotional video was uploaded on Monday to The Voice’s official account on X, formerly Twitter.

The video showed new hosts Dan + Shay blocking Reba from taking an artist.

“The taste a sweet revenge,” they explained.

    “We had our first block.”

The shot cut to show Reba explaining that she can steal the artist back from the pop music duo.

John Legend added fuel to the fire by saying the three judges were fighting over a contestant and that there was a sour atmosphere on the panel.

Dan + Shay explained that they gave each other a look before deciding to block Reba.

“I knew exactly what to do,” Shay said.

“It felt awesome. Blocking the queen of country music, put that one on the resume,” Dan replied.

Fans seemed to be annoyed at the interaction and said the judges rip into each other too much.

“The Voice has put the focus on bantering among judges as opposed to the talent. That has gotten old,” wrote a viewer on social media.

‘Dan and Shay show secret strain on The Voice, with showboating coach using body language to establish dominance’
“Once was funny with Blake and Adam… no longer is. Less bantering and sad stories and let talent compete.”

“Dan and Shay have ruined The Voice for me! I can not stand listening to them, never mind watching them,” said another enraged fan.

“Not enjoying Dan +Shay on The Voice,” noted a third.

“The only The Voice winner I know is Blake Shelton,” stated a fourth.

    BLAKE’S DEPARTURE

Blake Shelton left The Voice last year after Season 23.

“I’ve been wrestling with this for a while and I’ve decided that it’s time for me to step away from The Voice after season 23,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

“This show has changed my life in every way for the better and it will always feel like home to me.”

“It’s been a hell of a ride over these 12 years of chair turns and I want to thank everyone at The Voice from NBC, every producer, the writers, musicians, crew and catering people, you are the best.”

Since his departure, many avid fans have been left unhappy and feel as if the show may have run its course.

    TIME TO FINISH?

This season, Dan + Shay have made their coaching debut, replacing singer Niall Horan while he’s on tour, as John and Reba remain on the panel, joined by alum Chance the Rapper.

Some fans aren’t all that happy with the show this season, and they are not keeping quiet on the matter.

“I’m thinking that #TheVoice has run its course,” one person tweeted.

“Are there any fun people that audition? Everything is a sob story, and there is far more church talk than anything…. Just boring. Same s**t different half year.

“I do like me some country music; but I love me some rock & roll & even some pop,” another viewer commented.

“#TheVoice is too country this season!”

‘The Voice’ Adds Another Country Music Superstar for Season 25

Sometimes The Voice tips off its panel for next season during high-profile, current season episodes.

The Voice 25 episode 7 recap: The Battles Premiere - GoldDerby

It’s why fans suspected Reba McEntire would replace Blake Shelton ahead of Season 24 when she appeared as a mega mentor during Season 23. Hardly anyone figured NBC had done it again during last December’s finale.

McEntire and Dan + Shay are currently coaches on Season 25 of The Voice.

This week, the reality show will feature the third and fourth battle episodes.

Live episodes will begin next month

Keith Urban to Join 'The Voice' as Mega Mentor for Season 25 Before New Album

In December, Keith Urban was one of several artists to sing during the finale. He must have done well, because the show just announced he’s returning as a mega mentor this spring.

The “Messed Up as Me” singer has a most unusual path to this role — as far as we can tell, he’s the only person to score a major role on two different versions of the show.

When The Voice began in Australia in 2011, Urban was one of four coaches. He only stuck around for a single season, but returned for Season 10 and Season 11.

Talking to Taste of Country Nights earlier this year, Urban said he’d love to return to television, but offered no hints that a return was imminent, unless you really read into the brevity of his comment.

A path from mega mentor to coach is far from certain. While McEntire was the first mega mentor (before her, each coach had their own), the next year the show repeated the formula and brought in Wynonna Judd to join Chance the Rapper.

Chance the Rapper is a current coach, but Judd is not. No announcement has been made about the coaches for Season 26.

“Wow, That was an incredible performance by maddi jane and nadege, They sounded amazing together, And it was one of the best performances of the night this week,” another shared.

Chance picked Maddi Jane as the winner, causing John Legend and Dan + Shay to slam their Steal buttons for Nadège – only for Chance to interrupt Legend’s pitch as he used his Playoff Pass to keep both Nadège and Maddi Jane on his team.

What does the winner of The Voice get?

LUCKY winners of The Voice have enjoyed successful musical careers since coming on top of the popular singing competition.

The Season 24 finale of The Voice saw Huntley win the competition and now fans want to know what he gets for winning.

(L-R) Gwen Stefani, Reba McEntire, Niall Horan, and John Legend were the judges of The Voice during season 24

What does the winner of The Voice get?

Each winner of The Voice reportedly gets $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Music Group.

By comparison, the winner of American Idol reportedly earns $250,000, plus a $1,000 weekly stipend while recording their album.

However, The Voice winner’s celebrity coach sometimes offers other perks to the champion.

Former Voice judge Blake Shelton has taken winners from his team on tour with him and has tried to push Universal Music Group to promote their records properly.

In addition, the cash prize reportedly has strings attached to it.

In 2014, the New York Daily News reported that if a contestant violates the contract they signed with the network, they will not walk away with the prize.

Any contestant who reveals the details of the show’s contract can be sued for between $100,000 to $1 million.

Apart from winning the cash prize, contestants are given a small stipend to cover necessities while they’re on the show.

What have past The Voice winners said about the record label deal?

Previous winners of The Voice have gone on the record and complained that though they won a record deal, they did not win the support of the label.

Alisan Porter from season 10 told the New York Post: “I knew I wasn’t gonna be the next Ariana Grande, but when you’re with a label who has Ariana Grande or people like that, that’s sort of their motivation.”

Eighth-season winner Sawyer Fredericks also told the Post: “I feel like they’re trying to cookie-cutter every person that comes out of The Voice ’cause they think they’re all the same.

“I don’t think they put the time into figuring out what kind of artist I was.”

Even The Voice coaches have criticized how the label deals with champions of the show.

Former coach Adam Levine told Howard Stern: “We do so much great s**t for these singers, and then they go to a record label … that f***k it up.”

How can I watch The Voice?

Fans of The Voice saw Michael Huntley crowned as the winner on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

Huntley performed Creed’s song Higher during part one of the season finale and it was enough to help secure him the victory.

This marks coach Niall Horan’s second straight win after he joined the show last year coaching Gina Miles to a victory.

While fans wait for season 25 to premiere on February 26, 2024, they can rewatch the finale on Peacock, along with earlier episodes.

GWEN Stefani and Reba McEntire have appeared in a skit together during the finale of The Voice, and fans ripped Reba for a silly mistake.

The Voice coaches filmed a scene for the finale based on Reba’s tater tots, which she gave to her team members as a gift during auditions.

The duo set up a food truck with the 68-year-old’s tots and Gwen’s tomato sauce.

At the beginning, Gwen, 54, said: “Your tots, my sauce? Match made in heaven.”

They hopped in the truck, ready to sell some tasty tots, but the vehicle broke down.

Thankfully, Reba saved the day by popping the hood of the truck, tinkering with some tools, and eventually giving it a good old-fashioned whack before it started up again.

Soon after, they made it to the set of the television show to hand out some of their snacks.

While practicing for real customers, Reba uses some “classic cook lingo” like “cup of mud” for coffee, and the No Doubt singer had a hard time understanding.

Then, the coaches opened up their food truck to real customers and fed the masses on the show’s lot.

Once everyone was fed and the truck was closed up, the country singer broke the news that the truck was broken again.

Gwen offered to go fix it, and while she was messing under the hood Reba attempted to call a tow truck.

Unfortunately, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Reba took out her phone and held it upside down to make the call.

    EVERYONE LOVES REBA

Many fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, quickly noticed the blunder and called Reba out.

One said: “Reba with the upside down phone. Not too much y’all I love this woman.”

“LMFAOOO the phone was upside down,” wrote another.

A third added: “Did anyone else notice Reba’s phone upside down at the end of that.”

Another fan said: “No one seen Reba’s phone was upside down.”

    BAD LOOK

Earlier in the season, Gwen was slammed for apparently influencing Reba’s new look.

The country star declared that she was “twinning” with Gwen when she proudly showed off her new black and white fake nails.

In the backstage clips from the show, the duo posed side-by-side, showing off their outfits and their long nails.

Reba had a black and white checkerboard pattern on the tips of her nails while Gwen was sporting a beige chrome color on hers.

Gwen posed in a wildly patterned outfit, that included a puff sleeve detail and a ruched mini skirt.

Meanwhile, Reba was sporting a black blazer with bejeweled details and a matching pair of pants.

On social media, fans worried that Reba was following in Gwen’s footsteps.

One wrote: “Reba please don’t change. Get rid of the claws so unattractive.”

Another added, “NO REBA. Don’t let that rub off on you,” and a third agreed: “No no no they look terrible.”

The Voice is adding another star to season 25!

On Monday, NBC announced Keith Urban will join the hit reality singing competition series starting April 8 as a mega mentor for the performers who’ve made it through the battle rounds as they prepare for knockouts.

The Grammy-winning Australian country star, 56, will appear on The Voice alongside its current panel of coaches: Chance the Rapper, Dan + Shay, John Legend and Reba McEntire.

Urban has previously appeared on The Voice as former coach Blake Shelton’s advisor during season 15. He was also a coach on the series’ Australian version for seasons 1, 10 and 11.

Aside from his duties on the show, Urban is gearing up to release a new album featuring his recent singles, “Straight Line” and “Messed Up as Me.” The forthcoming project will serve as a follow-up to 2020’s The Speed of Now Part 1.

Previous mega mentors on The Voice have included Wynonna Judd, Ed Sheeran, Snoop Dogg, Usher, James Taylor, Taylor Swift and others.

Last year, Urban returned to American Idol as a mentor for the show’s season 21 finale after serving as a judge from seasons 12 to 15. At the time, he spoke to PEOPLE about his excitement toward working with the talented contestants.

“To be able to come in as a mentor, and play as well, is incredible,” he said. “That was home for me for several seasons, and the mentoring part is probably one of the things I always enjoyed the most, getting to work with the artist one-on-one.”

Before season 25 of The Voice officially kicked off in February, Dan + Shay spoke to PEOPLE about the country-heavy lineup of coaches this time around.

“This year it’s crazy because we have the queen of country music. I mean Reba is on there, and it’s a very intimidating thing because she’s… Reba,” Shay Mooney, 32, said. “I mean, when you have one name, that’s how you know you really made it!”

“[But] we got a double chair,” quipped Dan Smyers, 36. “That’s twice as cool as having one chair.”

They spoke further about playfully feuding with McEntire, 68, on the series. “We get heated out there on the floor. We’re both country artists. We’re competing for the country acts that come through The Voice,” said Smyers. “Everybody always wants the country acts. I feel like that’s some of the best talent that’s out there.”

Luckily, they’re all friends behind the scenes. “Hanging out with Reba is amazing. She is honestly one of the sweetest people we’ve ever met in our entire lives. I just can’t say enough good things about her. She’s always been so kind to us,” added Smyers.

The photographer Alice Hawkins (right) examines ideas around beauty, femininity and the male gaze in photographs of herself and her subjects dressed as Dolly Parton.

    CNN  —

Alice Hawkins has never photographed her idol, Dolly Parton, but she has photographed many Dollys.

One Dolly is on horseback, red heels in stirrups and blonde curls piled high on her head. In another image, two Dollys link their arms around each other’s waists, fingers fanning out with long acrylic nails. Elsewhere, another Dolly — Hawkins herself — dons a crisp white skirt suit to pose outside of the small chapel in Dollywood, the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee-amusement park owned by the Queen of Nashville herself.

Hawkins is a British photographer, born more than 4,300 miles from Memphis, where Parton broke into the music industry. But she’s spent the past decade-plus dressing up as the singer, making multiple series about her own sense of self — and that of other Dolly superfans — through the glittering facet of Parton’s image.

Emulating Parton’s flamboyant style has given Hawkins “a lot of self-belief,” she said in a phone call with CNN, teaching her to “embrace” her femininity and sexuality in a way she hadn’t always felt comfortable with.

Hawkins has long loved the extravagance of Parton’s Americana, and was already a fan of her music when she first saw the country star perform in 2002 at a small venue in London. But there, she found herself “spellbound,” she explained. “I left knowing that I’d found my idol.”

Hawkins says she’s had to deal with assumptions about her intelligence and her ability since she was a teenager, in part because of her blonde hair.

“I’m a country girl myself, from Suffolk,” Hawkins said of the kinship she feels with Parton, despite their geographical and generational distance. “I grew up in a village, didn’t have much money. And I moved to London, my own ‘cup of ambition,’” she explained, quoting the lyric from Parton’s classic 1980 song “9 to 5.” Today, she lives just outside of the city, raising her children while working as a photographer.

Earlier this year, she released “Dear Dolly,” a book that presents several Parton-inspired photo projects, from sumptuous, staged portraits of Dolly impersonators to stripped-down nude self-portraits of Hawkins’ own pregnancy, in which she channels the singer through voluminous hair.

    Defiant glamour

Through Hawkins’ lens, being unapologetically feminine can be an act of defiance against gendered stereotypes.

In the intro of “Dear Dolly,” Hawkins writes on some of the moments that have undercut her self-worth: a relative describing her “like a tart in season,” when she dressed for a night out as a teenager; a headmaster questioning her intelligence before an important exam. “(There’s) lots of negative judgments and assumptions, on your intelligence on your ability,” she told CNN. Women like Pamela Anderson and Anna Nicole Smith, whom she also idolized in her younger years, “stuck two fingers up” with their platinum hair and comfort with their sexuality, she wrote.

In the blush-hued, bedazzled world of “Dear Dolly,” Hawkins and the other Dollys — Kelly O’Brien, Trixie Malicious and Claire Moore — radiate a sense of joy, freedom and self-assuredness. It’s both a love letter to the country superstar and the sisterhoods formed in her name. For Hawkins, the work has also been an outlet she could turn to in difficult times.

“I’ve made the work when I felt quite desperate or full of grief, or terrified about my future and my identity,” she said.

Hawkins first visited Dollywood in 2010 at the suggestion of her husband while traveling to the US, following the unexpected death and funeral of her closest friend. She was deeply depressed, she said, but found solace in her experience at the park, located near the small cabin where Parton was raised in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. “It was healing,” Hawkins recalled.

The following year, after one of her editors at the early 2010s British fashion magazine Ponystep unsuccessfully pitched a shoot with Parton, Hawkins instead suggested an editorial where she could “walk in her footsteps” in Dollywood, prompting the first project where she began to dress like the country star.

But Hawkins doesn’t consider herself an impersonator, and she doesn’t “go fully Dolly” on a day-to-day basis, she said. “It’s not really me, it’s my work. Sometimes I have acrylic nails, but I’m not that hyper-glamorous. That’s just my fantasy.”

Hawkins doesn't dress as Parton day to day, but says it's more of a “fantasy” she's adopted for the project.

One of her collaborators, O’Brien, meanwhile, is a Parton impersonator — and a convincing one, at that.

“I’ll never forget that we were in her pub in her little village in the English countryside. She was Dolly down to a tee, sitting at the bar, having a drink while I was shooting,” Hawkins recalled. “And this customer came in, and he was completely convinced she was Dolly Parton. We just could not burst his bubble.”

“She stayed in character, and she was like, ‘Well, thank you, honey,’” she continued. “I hope nobody told him otherwise.”

Photographing “Dear Dolly” has changed Hawkins life in many ways, she said. She “found a sense of belonging” through the friendships she’s made through a shared love for Parton. She has memories of things she never would have thought she’d do, like stepping on stage in Nashville to karaoke “In My Coat of Many Colors,” which “was terrifying,” she said with a laugh. “I can’t actually sing but I went for it and (the audience) were very kind to me.”

Hawkins has met Parton, too, several times at her shows, and she hopes she’s seen the book.

“She has taught me that I can be blonde, sexy, and almighty at the same time — and respected,” Hawkins said.

She knows she can always turn to Parton when needed, and step into a pair of rhinestone high heels. “I’m lucky that I’ve got that — her music will be forever.”
