‘The Voice’: Reba McEntire Fights Back Tears Over Powerful Toni Braxton Cover in First Knockouts Round

Asher HaVon’s emotionally charged cover of ‘Unbreak My Heart’ had Reba drying her eyes on Monday’s new episode.

Reba McEntire knows exactly how much emotion can be contained in a song and how much truth can be communicated through a raw performance.

    Reba McEntire on The Voice

Monday’s The Voice saw the series reach the first round of Knockouts, and Team Reba’s Asher HaVon and Tae Lewis were the first two artists to face off on the stage.

However, before their performance, the two musical hopefuls first met with this season’s mega-mentor, Keith Urban, who listened to both artists sing and provided feedback on their performances as they geared up for the big showdown.

Asher was the first to show off his skills, and the talented vocalist explained he’d be performing a rendition of Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart.”

“I just went through a breakup, and I love to get on stage and kind of be in character, but this time, there is no character. It’s just me,” Asher explained. “This is my first time facing those emotions.”

“Yeah, music is the best way to do it,” Reba replied. “It’ll heal your heart. It’ll help it.”

“I chose my dreams over my relationship,” Asher said in an interview. And while the decision was gut-wrenching for him, Asher feels he’s gained so much by following his dreams.

After his powerful first performance for Keith and Reba, the country queen simply asked, “That hurt, didn’t it?” And Asher agreed.

With some guidance from Keith — who praised Asher for his range and runs and suggested he try to hold back in the beginning of the song before really taking off the reins toward the end — Asher was ready to perform again, and this time, it brought Reba to tears.

“Oh, Asher, you got me,” Reba said, her voice shaking as she wiped tears from her eyes. “I felt your heart breaking. That’s what you want, and you got it. So, bravo.”

Tae, meanwhile, promised that his song choice was “not a crying song.” Instead, he showed off his undeniable talent with a performance of Cody Johnson’s “Nothin’ on You” that really suggested their showdown was going to be next-level.

Taking the stage for their Knockouts round, Asher brought the full-force of his incredible vocal range to his heart-wrenching cover of “Unbreak My Heart,” and simply blew all the judges away.

However, Tae left everything on the stage with his skillful delivery of “Nothin’ on You,” making sure to show just how talented of a country crooner he really is.

“You guys give me chills, make me cry. I felt like a proud mama sitting here. You both got so much soul,” Reba said after the show-stopping performances. “Asher, you open your mouth and this stuff comes out. Like, where did that come from? And I’m in awe. Wow. And then, Tae, you come up here, and you’re a ball of energy.”

When it was time to choose who took keep, however, Reba opted to go with her heart and pick Asher, explaining, “Something about him is different than anybody.”

That being said, this wasn’t the end of the road for Tae. After Asher was declared the winner, all the other judges — John Legend, Chance the Rapper and the judging duo Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney of Dan + Shay — all used their steals to try and win Tae onto their teams.

While John and Chance both gave him the hard sell, Tae couldn’t help but follow his country dreams and joined Team Dan + Shay.

Meanwhile, ET spoke with Keith ahead of his appearance on The Voice — which marked his first return to the show since he served as a mentor for Blake Shelton back in season 15.

“It’s actually fun, yeah. The teams are strong and I love this part of the journey,” he told ET of returning to the competition series. “I love being around artists. I just- I’m at home around artists.”

The Voice airs Mondays at 8 p.m. PT/ET on NBC.

One year after the devastating loss of her son, Jack, Chrissy Teigen is marking the painful anniversary on Instagram. In her post, she shares a previously unseen hospital photo from last year and heartbreaking words about her journey after pregnancy loss.

Teigen and her husband, John Legend, are parents to Luna, 5, and Miles, 3. She honored both kiddos in sweet posts this week for National Sons/Daughters Day—and she also honored their brother, Jack.

“And to the son we almost had,” she begins. “A year ago you gave me the greatest pain I could ever imagine to show me I could survive anything, even if I didn’t want to.”

After experiencing weeks of pregnancy complications, Teigen and Legend lost their son about halfway through her pregnancy. Afterward, she shared heartbreaking photos documenting her experience and later wrote an essay about her grief.

In her anniversary post, Teigen acknowledges that her grief lead her down a path of sobriety and taking better care of herself overall.

“I didn’t get to take care of you but you came and went to get me to love myself and take care of myself because our bodies are precious and life is a miracle,” she concludes in the caption. “They told me it would get easier but yeah, that hasn’t started yet. mom and dad love you forever.”

She’s previously talked about ways she’s honored her son’s memory—back in May, she mentioned that the new Teigen-Legend family home features an indoor tree dedicated to Jack.

“The whole reason why I wanted it was so Jack’s ashes could be in that soil and he could be with us all the time and grow through the beautiful leaves on this tree, and always be a part of us,” she said. “Because… he wasn’t just a moment in time. He was real and he was real to us and we loved him.”

Earlier this month, Teigen reflected on how her postpartum body serves as a constant reminder of her loss.

“It’s really weird when you lose a baby and your body gets paused in time,” she wrote. “When you lose a baby halfway through, your body just pauses. It has nothing to do. No one to feed. And you’re just…stuck. Stuck with saggy boobs that were prepping to be milk bags, a belly that was ready to bake.”

Sending love and healing thoughts to Chrissy Teigen today, and to every mother and family who has experienced the devastating grief of pregnancy loss.

The model shared the news in a heartbreaking Instagram post.

Alongside black and white shots of the couple in the hospital, Chrissy wrote: “We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before.

“We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”

The couple- who have two children, Luna, two, and Miles, two – had already named the son that they lost Jack.

“But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us.

John Legend is every dad on double kid duty in this sweet video

When it comes to co-parenting, singer John Legend gives a lot of credit to his amazing wife, Chrissy Teigen. (Come on, she’s such a great mom!) But, hey — nobody said dads like Legend aren’t out there on the parenting grind!

Teigen on Friday took to Instagram to give fans a look at what happens in the Teigen-Legend household when Mom gets a break. In a brief video, Legend is hard at work on double kid duty, simultaneously tending to their 1-month-old son, Miles, and 2-year-old daughter, Luna.

Legend is seen propped on a couch, burping newborn Miles — a task deemed difficult what with Luna climbing up his shoulders, trying to straddle him while using his head for support. “Bahahahahaha,” Teigen appropriately captioned the moment.

Teigen can also be heard laughing at the hilarious scene in the background of the video. Still, Legend succeeded: “Good burp, good burp,” he congratulated tiny Miles.

Later, the “Lip Sync Battle” host also uploaded a similar snapshot of her busy husband to her Instagram Story, jokingly writing: “the eyes say ‘help.’”

Teigen and Legend welcomed Miles in May, three weeks early, with little Luna becoming a big sister. Teigen relayed in April that she didn’t think Luna fully understood what was happening with their expanding family.

“She sees that something is going on,” she said. “But I don’t think she’s getting it.”

It looks like that’s starting to change! In another funny candid Teigen shared Saturday on Instagram, the mom-of-two is seen breastfeeding Miles … and also a baby doll of Luna’s. “Luna making me feed her babydoll so I guess I have twins now,” she captioned the snap.

So cute! We can’t wait to see more of Miles and Luna’s budding sibling relationship!

Blake Shelton shared a laugh with one of Gwen Stefani’s sons as they posed for a family picture at her Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony.

In a video from the special event captured by PEOPLE, the country crooner, stepfather to his singer wife’s three children — Apollo, 9, Zuma, 15, and Kingston, 17 — performed a subtle, playful prank.

Standing next to Zuma, he moves his hand from the teen’s shoulder to stick his finger by his ear, causing him to laugh and shrug the feeling away. Shelton, 47, laughed at the moment as they continued to be photographed.

Stefani shares her three boys with ex-husband Gavin Rossdale.

Speaking with PEOPLE last month, Stefani reflected on her rise to fame in the late ’90s and 2000s, sharing that her experience was bittersweet.

“I took Kingston on a world tour [when he was 9 months old]. We did 120 shows. I would have to nurse him and then get on stage, and then come off and he would twirl my ponytail,” she recalled.

“If I could say I regretted something, I would say that I wish that I could have divided it because that time is so precious. That’s when things got really hard for me emotionally because you just don’t want to miss anything,” continued the singer, “But at the same time, you also don’t want to let go of this momentum.”

Speaking with PEOPLE last December, Shelton opened up about prioritizing family over career in this chapter of his life.

“If I walked away from my career at this time, the only thing that I run the risk of is having regrets that I’m missing out on some more important things in life. For now, that’s our kids. This isn’t about me anymore and never will be again,” he shared.

“Even though I’m a stepparent, I take that job very seriously. The kids see me as a very important person in their life,” he continued. “[When they ask,] ‘Why isn’t Blake here?’ I take that stuff to heart. I’ve made plenty of money, but you can’t buy time back. I don’t want any regrets.”

Dan + Shay are undoubtedly pros when it comes to writing and performing heartwarming songs, many that are likely inspired by loved ones. The award-winning country duo have even become an unofficial go-to artist for first-dance songs at weddings, with sweet tracks like “You,” “From The Ground Up,” “Glad You Exist” and many others. Shay Mooney’s parents even shared a dance together while Dan + Shay took the stage before a performance in Dallas, Texas, during their sound check.

Dan + Shay shared the video on TikTok, sharing at that time that it “means the world to see people connecting with our music and sharing moments like this.” It “literally makes our day” to see videos of fans dancing to their songs, particularly at weddings (they’ve shared many videos as brides and grooms tag them, dancing to “You” and other sentimental songs).

Mooney, 30, absolutely shows his love for his wife and his kids. The singer-songwriter tied the knot with his wife, Hannah, in 2017. Since then, they’ve welcomed two sons together, and announced with a sweet video on Instagram that they’re expecting a third baby. Reba McEntire Calls ‘The Voice’ a ‘Well-Oiled Machine’

    Reba McEntire

Heavy/NBC Reba McEntire on The Voice.

With ‘The Voice’ being in the midst of its 23rd season and Blake Shelton, the only coach who has been a part of the series since the beginning, there has been much reflection on the show.

In a behind-the-scenes exclusive with People, McEntire and Shelton went back and watched old show clips, including Season 1 when the country icon was the first mentor on ‘The Voice’ for Shelton. The two spent plenty of time joking around and reflecting on how far the show had come.

Shelton announced ahead of Season 23 that this will be the final chapter for him with ‘The Voice.’ Over his illustrious run on the show, he has guided nine of his singers to victory, by far the most of any ‘Voice’ judge. As he continues through his final season, he’s looking to continue his winning ways after taking home the prize in Season 22.

Reba McEntire & Blake Shelton Reflect on the Show’s Growth

In their retrospective through the years, McEntire pointed out how ‘The Voice’ has become a staple among reality competition shows.

“Things have a changed a lot here on ‘The Voice’,” McEntire explained in the People clip while taking in an old clip from Season 1 with Shelton. “That was the first year here in the United States. It’s a well-oiled machine now.”

When McEntire made her first appearance this season as the Mega Mentor, a role she will continue serving in through the remaining Knockout Round, the Grammy-winning artist shared what it means to have another chance at offering her advice to all of these hopefuls.

“It’s always a lot of fun to give advice because I study people when they perform,” McEntire shared during the Knockouts premiere episode. “I want to be touched when they’re singing to me.”

When discussing the show’s value, McEntire noted that it’s the exposure that ‘The Voice’ offers to each aspiring performer but more importantly, the “chance of a lifetime” to get to work with successful artists like Kelly Clarkson, Chance the Rapper, Niall Horan, and Shelton. McEntire approaches her role as a Mega Mentor knowing the impact that everything she says can have on each individual.

Reba McEntire Could Have Been a Coach on ‘The Voice’

Ahead of her Mega Mentor appearance, McEntire sat down with the show’s host, Carson Daly, on The Today Show. Daly mentioned that during the planning phase of ‘The Voice,’ they had originally wanted to bring her on as a coach. She wound up being a mentor that season, instead. Just as she did in that People interview, she also referred to the franchise as a “well-oiled machine’ when talking to Daly.

Speaking like a coach, McEntire said her goal with this season is to teach the importance of stage presence and connecting with the audience. Her main point is “to sell the song to the audience” which is something viewers of this season have seen her preach to each individual, “It was a lot of fun. They’re like sponges.”

Weird Things About Reba McEntire And Rex Linn’s Relationship

Rex Linn, Reba McEntire inside stadium Kevin Mazur/Getty Images

After her marriage of 26 years to Narvel Blackstock ended, Reba McEntire eventually moved on and wrote a rather unconventional love story with “Better Call Saul” actor Rex Linn. One oddity about McEntire and Linn’s relationship is that they first met when McEntire was still married to Blackstock — but it would be a long time before there were any romantic sparks between the two.

Linn told The List that his first meeting with McEntire was brief and professional. He’d scored a small role in the 1991 Kenny Rogers movie “The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw,” in which McEntire plays a lead character. “We shook hands on ‘The Gambler.’ Then, they were telling me, “Hey, dude. Get over there by that horse, and get on him,’” he recalled. Despite having their introduction cut short, they remained friends — on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” McEntire explained that they had a mutual buddy in movie producer E.K. Gaylord II.

The pair reconnected when McEntire joined Linn as a member of the “Young Sheldon” cast in early 2020. Because the sitcom brought the couple together, lead actor Iain Armitage told First for Women, “I feel like I get to take partial credit for that.” He also said that he thinks Linn and McEntire make the perfect pair, even though he didn’t observe any sparks when he first saw them together. But there was a reason romance was not on Linn’s mind at the time.

Why they didn’t consider their first dinner a date

Rex Linn, Reba McEntire seated at tablePhillip Faraone/Getty Images

Rex Linn and Reba McEntire’s attempt to spend time together outside of work was not unlike a sitcom plot. McEntire admitted to Yahoo! Entertainment that she turned Linn’s first dinner invite down, explaining, “I’d had a long day, and I was exhausted.” When they later arranged to meet up in January 2020, it wasn’t for a one-on-one outing — they were joined by their “Young Sheldon” co-star Melissa Peterman and McEntire’s tour manager, Marne McLyman. According to Linn, he also expected another party to join them. “The last time I had seen Reba, the year before, she was dating someone. So I actually thought her then-boyfriend was going to be with her,” he told Southern Living.

While McEntire was single at the time, she revealed that she didn’t consider the outing a date, either — until her friends played their roles of rom-com besties perfectly by breaking down the situation for her. “Melissa and Marne said it was a date!” the “Does He Love You” singer recalled to Yahoo! Entertainment. “We just had a really nice evening.” Before they parted ways, McEntire let Linn know that she wanted to see him again. Unfortunately, they didn’t get to plan their first proper date until June 2020 due to the pandemic. While they waited for another opportunity to dine together in person again, Linn sent McEntire food in the mail. She told Southern Living that his gifts included steak and ice cream.

Their sweet and salty pet names

Reba McEntire, Rex Linn with tater tots Sara Jaye/Getty Images

On “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” Reba McEntire explained how she ended up getting a deep-fried nickname from Rex Linn. After she, Linn, and the rest of their little entourage finished dinner during their January 2020 outing, the group decided to head to a nearby wine bar that also served food. They let their server know that they’d already eaten, but the enterprising individual tried to tempt them with the appetizer menu. As soon as McEntire learned that tater tots were one of the offerings, she decided that she could use a little post-supper snack. Linn apparently found her enthusiasm for the fried cylinders of grated spuds greatly amusing. “Rex said, ‘That’s your nickname from here on out, Tater Tot,’” McEntire recalled.

Linn got his own pet name while everyone was practicing social distancing during the early weeks of the pandemic. According to McEntire, it was actually her sister, Susie McEntire-Eaton, who came up with it. The siblings were quarantining together, so McEntire-Eaton had a front-row seat to McEntire and Linn’s long-distance courtship. On TalkShopLive, McEntire recalled her sister’s reaction to learning her nickname. “Susie said, ‘Tater Tot? Well, why don’t you just call him Sugar Tot?’ And so it stuck. So, we’re the Tots.” McEntire also revealed that she loves taters tots so much that she and Linn went to Sonic for Valentine’s Day and dined on them. So, when’s the fast food chain going to add sugar tots to the menu?

Reba McEntire and Rex Linn love scaring each other

Rex Linn, Reba McEntire posing Emma Mcintyre/Getty Images

On “Today,” Reba McEntire told hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager that one of her and Rex Linn’s favorite pastimes is trying to scare the pants off each other. She also shared her favorite method for almost giving her poor partner a heart attack. “I’ll sit there for 10 minutes, waiting for him to come out of the bathroom,” she said. “Be down a dark hall and just be silhouetted. It scares him to death. I think that’s the funniest thing in the world.”

For Halloween in 2020, Linn enlisted some help to play a spooky prank on McEntire. “He ordered from Costco a seven-foot werewolf with a motion sensor in it, and he put it in my bathroom,” the “And Still” singer recalled during a 2021 virtual event, as recapped by Country Now. McEntire wasn’t thrilled about being greeted with a growl from the “Thriller”-esque creature. But after threatening to fire anyone who helped Linn plan the werewolf prank, she didn’t demand that he take it back to Costco. Once the initial shock wore off, she was able to laugh about it. “I was pretty flattered that he went to all that trouble to scare me,” she said. But it’s more fun to be on the other side of a hair-raising prank when you have a hairy monster at your disposal. “We took it to every place we could to scare everybody else,” McEntire continued. “We had a blast.”

Did Reba McEntire drop a marriage hint?

Rex Linn, Reba McEntire posing Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

On “Watch What Happens Live,” Reba McEntire mentioned a glaring difference between her relationship history and that of Rex Linn: She’s gone through two divorces, and Linn has never gotten hitched. McEntire told host Andy Cohen that she and Linn have discussed this discrepancy before, and it seemingly doesn’t mean Linn is completely opposed to marriage. In an interview with Extra, McEntire revealed they’ve already spoken about the logistics of planning a wedding. “We thought, ‘Man, if we ever had a ceremony, we would have to have a 2 o’clock, 4 o’clock, 6 o’clock, and an 8 o’clock,’ ’cause we have so many friends, acquaintances, and family,” she said. But McEntire told Cohen she isn’t pushing for a proposal, nor will she be getting down on one knee. Instead, she’s letting Linn alone decide if she’ll become a three-time bride.

McEntire also spoke to E! News in January 2023 about the possibility of marrying Linn. “We get along so well right now, so why rock the boat?” she said. However, that December, she sparked engagement rumors by sporting a sparkler on her wedding ring finger on “The Voice.” She later told ET it wasn’t an engagement ring and admitted wearing it because she wanted to “just let everybody talk about it.” Or maybe she was trying to give Linn a not-so-subtle hint by showing him how nice that particular finger looks when it’s all blinged out.

Reba McEntire is dishing the details of how her relationship with boyfriend Rex Linn turned from friendship to a whirlwind romance.

While appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show during the Friday, March 1 episode, McEntire recalled being “like a magnet” to Linn when they connected on the set of Young Sheldon, despite having already been friends for almost 30 years.

The “Fancy” songstress first met Linn in 1991 while filming The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw, although they were both in relationships with other people at the time.

It wasn’t until 2020 when they began looking at each other in a different light.

“We were all going to go out and have dinner. Melissa [Peterman] says that that was our first date, because, I mean, I was like a magnet to Rex,” McEntire, 68 told host Drew Barrymore. “I just couldn’t get close enough to him.”

“I don’t know why. We had talked and communicated throughout the years, had a mutual friend, Ed Gaylord, and we stayed in contact. But for some reason, that night was just so special,” she continued.

The Voice judge said she has since asked Linn, 67, why they didn’t get together earlier, and he thinks it is because McEntire “would have killed” him during their younger years.

    “He’s a wild man. He’s a 12-year-old,” the country legend joked.

But clearly, things were meant to be for McEntire and Linn, who ended up connecting over tater tots of all things while on their first “date.”

After having dinner, the pair went to a wine bar, where the server offered them some appetizers since they had already eaten a full dinner—and much to the Big Sky actress’ delight, tater tots were on the menu.

Once McEntire enthusiastically ordered her tots and proclaimed her love for the fried potato snack, Linn told her, “You know I’m famous for giving people their nicknames and that’s your nickname—’Tater Tot.’”

McEntire later came up with the name “Sugar Tot” to nickname Linn in return. “We’re the tots—sugar and tater.”

“So, we’ve been together ever since. He’s a sweetheart,” the smitten musician added.

    And the rest is history!
