Meghan Markle skipping UK visit with Prince Harry ‘prompts huge sigh of relief from Kensington Palace’ as King Charles is set to ‘reach out’ to Prince Archie on his birthday, royal expert claims

Meghan Markle skipping out on an upcoming visit to the UK with Prince Harry has ‘prompted a huge sigh of relief from Kensington Palace’ – as King Charles is set to ‘reach out’ to Prince Archie on his birthday, a royal expert has claimed.

The Duke of Sussex, whose son Archie is celebrating his fifth birthday today, will attend a service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

Royal expert Tom Quinn has claimed that royal aides were quietly relieved that the Duchess of Sussex won’t be joining her husband for the UK leg of his trip – instead meeting Harry in Nigeria afterwards.

Speaking to The Mirror, the expert claimed: ‘At Kensington Palace there was a huge sigh of relief when it was confirmed that Meghan would not be accompanying her husband to the UK.’

What’s more, the expert also claimed King Charles is ‘desperate’ to have a relationship with Archie and Lilibet, who are being raised in California.

He also told The Mirror that the monarch ‘dislikes new technology’ and is ‘uncomfortable’ with the idea of making a video call.

The expert continued: ‘If he makes an ordinary telephone call to Harry it means he can have a quick word with Archie without the need to talk to Meghan.’

In April 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Archie video-called the late Queen to wish her a happy 94th birthday – with the couple reportedly instructing their spokesman to email a selection of hand-picked publications to share the news shortly afterwards.

Ahead of his visit this week, it was reported Prince Harry was ‘very keen’ to see his father during his trip to the UK.

The Duke is said to have ‘kept in regular contact’ with King Charles following his shock cancer diagnosis in February.

After recently announcing he was resuming his public duties, the King is set to attend Buckingham Palace’s first garden party of the year from 4pm on Wednesday.

The garden party and the Invictus Games ceremony are both expected to finish at around 6pm, allowing the two to meet in person for the first time since February, the Sun reports.

‘It’s clear he is keen to see his father as he continues his recovery and most people expect another reunion of some kind next week,’ the source said.

The expert also claimed King Charles (pictured) is 'desperate' to have a relationship with Archie and Lilibet, who are being raised in California

Prince Archie is celebrating his fifth birthday. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex pictured their South Africa tour in September 2019

However, any such meeting will probably not include the attendance of Prince William.

On Thursday, William is likely to be away from London and he has engagements in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on Friday.

Nigerians are ‘excited’ to welcome their ‘daughter’ Meghan Markle for a royal visit with her husband next month after Prince Harry attends an event in London.

Social media users with links to the country said they were ‘overwhelmed with joy’ and promised a ‘celebration’ to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

It comes after Meghan revealed in 2022 that she found out she was ’43 per cent Nigerian’ following genealogy research carried out ‘a couple of years’ prior.

The couple will head to Nigeria after being invited by the African country’s chief of defence staff, who met Harry last September at the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf.

Daniel Egwu, who lives in Enugu in Nigeria, tweeted: ‘I’m excited about this news! Our beloved sister, Meghan and our brother-in-law, Harry are welcome to Nigeria!’

Another X user wrote: ‘Harry and Meghan are coming to Nigeria in May! We cannot wait to welcome them! And our good sis is coming home for the first time. We have been waiting since she discovered she’s a daughter of the soil.’

Meghan’s Nigerian heritage was referenced by Harry at the opening ceremony of the Dusseldorf Invictus Games last September, after Nigeria joined Colombia and Israel in sending their first-ever delegation to the event.

‘We’re really excited to have new nations join us. Let’s hear it for Colombia, Israel and Nigeria,’ Harry told the crowd at the Merkur Spiel-Arena.

‘Now, I’m not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered she is of Nigerian descent, it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year!’

King Charles ‘must sit down’ with Meghan and Harry and say ‘I’m sorry’ in difficult conversation says Piers

TV presenter Piers Morgan has claimed King Charles should sit down with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to discuss the pair’s use of their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shouldn’t be using their Royal titles, Piers Morgan has claimed. The TV presenter slammed the couple, who stepped down from Royal duties in 2020.

Harry, 39, and Meghan, 42, were stripped of their HRH titles after leaving the Royal Family, but the pair occasionally still use their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles. When King Charles, 75, became King, Harry and Meghan’s two children became Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.

Piers, 59, has discussed the pair’s use of titles, claiming King Charles should sit down with them for a chat. He said the monarch should tell Harry and Meghan they cannot use the titles.

“They shouldn’t be using the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex bestowed on them by the monarchy,” he claimed on The Megyn Kelly Show.

Piers added: “I hope that King Charles – who is massively distracted by his illness – will at some stage have that conversation and say, ‘You can’t keep the titles. I’m sorry.’”

He went on to say that the pair should not be able to “trade on their titles” and drop the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The outspoken TV presenter has not shied away from sharing his opinion on the Sussexes over the years, having criticised them on several occasions.

Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the Royals has remained strained since they stepped down from Royal duties in March 2020. The couple relocated to California and have only returned to the UK on a handful of occasions, such as Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022.

Harry will soon travel to London however, in order to attend a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games at St Paul’s Cathedral on 8 May. The King is also expected to be in London at this time, meaning it is likely the father and son could reunite.

Harry and Charles last reunited earlier this year when the monarch publicly announced his cancer diagnosis. Harry jetted to the UK to see his dad in person following the news.

Harry’s upcoming stay in London will be brief, with sources close to the Royal Family saying that the meeting between Harry and the King, if it happens, will be short due to the King’s packed schedule. The monarch is scheduled to appear at a weekly audience with the Prime Minister and also attend the first Buckingham Palace Garden Party.

Meanwhile, Meghan has launched her latest business venture, American Riviera Orchard, which is a lifestyle brand. She has also been working on a new podcast with Lemonada. She is also an executive producer on Harry’s new Netflix polo show, with details soon to be released about the upcoming project.

Meghan Markle ‘won’t set foot in the UK ever again’ despite Prince Harry’s hopes for May

Meghan Markle has been a huge supporter of The Invictus Games since she started dating Prince Harry and attended her first Games in in Toronto in 2017 but her appearance at a London ceremony hangs in the balance

Meghan Markle is thought to have already given her verdict on a trip to the UK in May – and it’s not looking good, according to a royal expert.

The Duke of Sussex will return to his homeland at the beginning of May as he attends a celebration of ten years of the Invictus Games. His visit is set to include a special service at St. Paul’s Cathedral on May 8 but Meghan’s attendance at the event is still ‘to be confirmed’.

Meghan is always at Harry’s side for Invictus events, holding his hand, waving to crowds and hugging participants as she brings her brand of friendly American charm to proceedings. But Harry might be forced to ride solo to the next batch of events for the international multi-sport event first held in 2014, for wounded, injured and sick service personnel.

“I’m of the opinion that Megan won’t set foot in the UK ever again,” Charles Rae, former royal correspondent for The Sun said. “I just don’t think she wants her to have anything to do at all with this country.”

Rae said he initially saw Meghan enjoying being a part of the royal family but claims she changed her mind. “I don’t believe that she she understood the pecking order of the royal family. You’ve got the monarch, you’ve got the the the Prince of Wales And then you’ve got everyone else under that she wanted to be the star and that I think it was that simple that she thought she just picked up her toys and decided to go off to America.”

Royal Expert Claims Prince Harry and Meghan Markle "Still Hope" They Can Return to Part-Time Royal Duties

Meanwhile, Prince Harry is thought to be having “sleepless nights” over his upcoming visit to the UK next month. “Harry and Megan are having sleepless nights about what they should do when Harry visits the UK later this year – he will have to do something to acknowledge the huge difficulties his family is going through, but he won’t want to do or say anything that seems to imply anything less than wholehearted support for his permanently aggrieved wife,” royal expert and author Tom Quinn told us.

The last time Harry visited the UK it was to meet with his father King Charles after his cancer diagnosis but Meghan stayed in Montecito, California, with their two children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. It’s thought she will swerve a visit to the UK once again next month.

Prince Harry says Meghan is ‘so similar to’ Princess Diana: ‘She has the same confidence’

The Duke of Sussex said his wife and late mom have the same “compassion” and “empathy”

Prince Harry sees a lot of similarities between Meghan Markle and Princess Diana. The Duke of Sussex spoke on Netflix’s new documentary series Harry & Meghan about his wife having the same confidence and empathy as his late mother.

“So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mom,” Harry said. “She has the same compassion. She has the same empathy. She has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.”

The Duke added, “I accept that there will be people around the world who fundamentally disagree with what I’ve done and how I’ve done it, but I knew that I had to do everything I could to protect my family. Especially after what happened to my mom. You know, I didn’t want history to repeat itself.”

In one scene in the series, Meghan is seen holding, presumably, son Archie Harrison up to look at a photo of Princess Diana, saying, “That’s your Grandma Diana.”

Harry’s mother passed away in 1997, twenty years before Harry and Meghan got engaged in 2017. During their engagement interview—which Meghan referred to as an “orchestrated reality show” on the Netflix series—the Duke revealed that he designed Meghan’s engagement ring with little diamonds from his mother’s jewelry collection “to make sure that she’s with us on this, on this crazy journey together.”

Discussing having Diana’s stones in the interview, the Duchess said, “I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness is, and the inclusion of that and obviously not being able to meet his mom, it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us.”

Harry admitted at the time that he believed his mother and Meghan would have been “thick as thieves.” He said, “I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know, so excited for me,” adding that Diana probably would have been “best friends with Meghan.”

She also had one-on-one interaction with the children, whom she hugged, gave autographs, talked and took photos, during the visit.

The Suits alum also posed with photos with the hospital staff, and is also said to have made a generous donation to the cause.

Several media outlets claimed the visit was too akin to royal engagements conducted by the late Princess Diana and Kate Middleton on different occasions.

Internet agreed with the sentiments, as one user wondering, “Meghan Markle doing the rounds. Is she filling in while the royals are ill? A camera & reading to kids, fancy that!”

Her hair was parted in the middle as she let it loose, swept to one of her shoulders as she covered her mouth with a black mask.

Internet was divided over the duchess’ latest engagement; while some heralded Meghan for her kind interactions with kids, others slammed her for bringing in a camera crew to show off her goodness.

The Duchess of Sussex, 41, joined her husband Prince Harry and in-laws Prince William and Kate Middleton for a surprise walkabout at Windsor Castle on Saturday, two days after the death of Queen Elizabeth. Touring the deluge of tributes and greeting well-wishers gathered at the gates for about 40 minutes, Meghan warmly hugged a teen girl, who opened up to CNN about what the gesture meant.

“We were just waiting for her to come, and she just came near me and asked my name, and how my day was, how long I as waiting,” the 14-year-old girl said of the moment. “I asked if she could have a hug, and she hugged me back. It was just quite an amazing moment. I’m still shaking now.”

Asked by correspondent Scott McLean on why she reached out, the teen said she felt compelled “because I look up to her in some ways, and it just felt like it was the right thing to do.”

McLean asked, “Why do you feel a bit of sympathy for her? Just because of the Queen’s passing or because of her relationship with the royal family?”

“I guess both. It was quite nice to see William and Kate and Meghan and Harry together,” she said. “I just wanted to show her that she’s welcome here and wanted to hug her after everything that’s happened.”

Another source adds that security was not expecting both couples at the walkabout.

Prince William thought the walkabout to greet the crowds “was an important show of unity at an incredibly difficult time for the family,” a royal source tells PEOPLE.

A palace insider tells PEOPLE: “It’s such an extraordinary historical moment and also a deeply personal one for the family that you’d hope and think that all members of the family would unite and support [the King] especially. And perhaps some of those wounds can be healed in the process.”

The reunion among William, Kate, Harry and Meghan is poignant, as relations have been strained between the California couple and members of the royal family in recent years.

In a historic first speech after becoming monarch, King Charles III on Friday expressed his “profound sorrow” and gave an emotional tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth.

“This is a time of change for my family,” the new sovereign explained in his inaugural address. With Charles’ rise in rank, Harry and Meghan’s children — Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 1 — are now sixth and seventh in line to the throne, respectively, following their father.

In a sweet message for his younger son and daughter-in-law, King Charles added, “I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”

Meghan Markle may have just announced a brand-new lifestyle brand, but that doesn’t mean she’s turned her back on a potential dip into politics.

The Duchess of Sussex, 42, has long been rumored to have been eyeing a career in politics, with unconfirmed reports suggesting she’s been forging connections with top Democrats since quitting royal life in 2020.

In fact, President Biden’s sister, Valerie Biden Owens, previously reportedly “endorsed” Markle as a woman she would back for the White House.

“I’ve always said Meghan has her eye on a bigger gain; this isn’t the bigger gain. I’ve always said she has had her eye on politics,” the late Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell said of the Duchess.

“She is trying everything she can to make as much money as she can to support their lifestyle.”

He continued, “Again, they are going against the royal family’s wishes. Queen Elizabeth specifically said ‘do not use your royal titles for commercial gain’ and that is exactly what they are doing.”

“They are making up their own rules as they go along. As long as they can make money they will try everything,” Burrell added.

If the “Suits” alum was to try her hand at getting her foot in the door at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., it wouldn’t be the first time a Hollywood star set their sights on politics.

Actors including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronald Reagan established themselves in the political sphere after successful stints on the silver screen.

The bodybuilder, 76, served as the 38th governor of California from 2003 to 2011, and Reagan starred in several Tinseltown features in the 1930s before becoming the 40th US president.

Elsewhere, Burrell touched on the possibility of a royal reconciliation being in the cards between Harry and his estranged brother, Prince William, and their father, King Charles.

“I think [Harry] might be holding out hope for when William becomes King,” Burrell said on behalf of Slingo. “Harry believed there would be a new chapter and a new leaf with a place for him but he would be so estranged by then that he would be barely recognizable to the public and I’m not sure they want him back on a full-time role.”

Calling the runaway royal a “destructive” person to have close to the Firm, Burrell said “you never know what he is going to do next.”

“Now he is a resident of America he always has that possibility of going back to the States to spill the beans and that is not what William wants: he wants privacy, and stability and he can’t have that with Harry standing beside him,” Burrell added.

Indeed, an olive branch has not been extended to the father of two ahead of his UK trip next week.

Not only is Harry set to stay at a hotel after not being offered a royal residence, his estranged family members have no plans to see him during his brief visit to London.

What’s more, Charles is reportedly “too busy” to meet up with his youngest son.

Prince Harry has been given a stark warning by veterans over his decision to involve Meghan Markle in the Invictus Games.

The Duke of Sussex founded the sporting event in 2014 to help support wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans. In recent years, Meghan has become involved in the Invictus Games and even made a passionate speech at last year’s event.

While many people have welcomed Meghan’s involvement, some veterans are worried the games have become “too royal”. They’ve claimed the Invictus Games have “lost their meaning” with Meghan’s involvement and are asking Harry to step down.

GB News host Mark Dolan claims: “About 2,000 ex-military have left the games, as they say it’s lost its original meaning. There are some former veterans who would like Harry to step down.”

However, fans have hit back at the claims and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts. “Prince Harry rocks at the Invictus Games! These games aren’t just about sports—they’re a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of wounded warriors. Let’s cheer them on!” one fan wrote.

Another said: “From that first opening speech in 2014, now we’re here! Congratulations Prince Harry and the Invictus Games on your 10th Anniversary,” while a third person added: “THE founder of the Invictus Games took the stage on the 1st edition of IG and at that young age delivered a formidable speech. There were NO RF coalition, it’s Harry’s love & dedication to his fellow soldiers. H&M thrive!”

Harry will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games next week with a trip to London. The Duke of Sussex will visit St Paul’s Cathedral on May 8 to give a reading at a special service.

A statement published on the Invictus Games’ social media accounts read: “The Invictus Games Foundation will celebrate 10 years of changing lives and saving lives with a ‘Service of Thanksgiving’ at St Paul’s Cathedral on May 8th. We will be joined by our Patron, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, actor Damian Lewis and members of the worldwide Invictus Community to mark the occasion.”

Harry will not be joined by Meghan for the event. However, the Duchess of Sussex will join her husband for a trip to Nigeria where they will take part in talks on the Invictus Games.

Prince Harry and King Charles to meet for a second time ‘next week’: Duke of Sussex is ‘very keen’ to see his father on Invictus Games trip to London and has ‘kept regular contact’ with him after his cancer diagnosis – but he won’t be seeing his brother

Prince Harry is set to meet with his father King Charles for the second times since his shock cancer diagnosis next week.
The Duke of Sussex will be at a ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral marking the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games just two miles from where his father will be attending another event in London at the same time on Wednesday.
Days after the King’s diagnosis in February, the two talked for around half an hour.
Harry, 39, is reportedly ‘very keen’ to see father on his London trip and is said to have ‘kept regular contact’ with Charles, 75, since he announced he had cancer.

A source told the paper that while Harry is normally ‘5,0000 miles away’ from his father in California, it will be a ‘happy coincidence’ that they will be just two miles from each other on Wednesday.

‘It’s clear he is keen to see his father as he continues his recovery and most people expect another reunion of some kind next week,’ the source added.

However, any such meeting will probably not include the attendance of Prince William.

On Thursday, William is likely to be away from London and he has engagements in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on Friday.

It is not expected that Meghan will be with Harry at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Another source told the Mirror that the Duke of Sussex has ‘kept in regular contact with his father’ and has ‘made no secret of his desire to see him when he can’.

The source added that Harry was ‘especially concerned’ about his father and hopes that he will be well enough on Wednesday so they can see each other.

Inside Harry and Meghan’s Nigerian tour: Meghan will be treated as a ‘warrior princess’, they will have their own ‘royal’ entourage – and there may be a ceremonial tug of war, reveals SARAH RAINEY

Cheering crowds, colourful bouquets and a plush red carpet: when Prince Charles and Princess Diana touched down in Nigeria on March 15, 1990, legions of fans lined the runway to welcome them.

Every step of their five-day tour was recorded in fulsome detail by the world’s press, who joined them for lavish state banquets, community walkabouts and meetings with dignitaries.

The nature of the welcome of their son, Harry, and his wife Meghan will receive in the African nation, however, is yet to be seen.

The Sussexes’ tour, announced by the Nigerian Defence Headquarters last Sunday, will take place later this month, following Harry’s return to the UK to mark the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games at St Paul’s Cathedral on May 8.

The visit certainly has personal resonance for both. For Prince Harry, it’s in aid of the Invictus Games, his sporting tournament for sick and wounded servicemen, women and veterans, in which Nigeria participated for the first time last September. It came about after the Duke apparently struck up conversation during the games in Dusseldorf, Germany, with defence chief General Christopher Gwabin Musa.

For Meghan, it’s also about heritage. She announced in 2022 that a genealogy test had shown she was ’43 per cent Nigerian’.

But while the tour sounds very royal, the couple stepped back as working members of the Royal Family in 2020, meaning they have access to none of the funding, security nor — crucially — meticulous planning a trip of this sort usually entails.

According to retired chief superintendent Dai Davies, a former head of royalty protection, that means it will be a challenge. ‘This appears to be a quasi-royal tour but without any of the official back-up for it. It seems terribly badly thought-out to me.’

So what are the practicalities of carrying out a tour when you’re royal but no longer on the royal payroll?

    Security fears

Nigeria was recently ranked the ninth most dangerous country in Africa by the World Population Review, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) currently advises British nationals against travel to ‘all parts of Nigeria’.

The same is true in Harry’s new homeland, where the U.S. State Department urges citizens to ‘reconsider travel to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and armed gangs’. Harry and Meghan are certainly potential targets: reports place their worth at £48 million.

Harry is no longer entitled to protection abroad from the Metropolitan Police, nor help from the FCDO.

He and Meghan pay a fortune — reportedly £1.58 million a year — for their own private security team, headed by David Langdown, one of Harry’s former Metropolitan Police protection officers.

It’s not known if the couple will be contributing to the cost of security in Nigeria, though some reports have claimed it will be paid for by the Nigerian government.

Sources suggest their protocols while in Nigeria — where an estimated 87 million people live below the poverty line — will mimic the royal set-up, meaning they’ll travel with a small team of close-protection officers.

All will have done extensive reconnaissance beforehand, working closely with the security team of Nigerian president Bola Tinubu. Nigerian army spokesman Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau confirmed to the Mail that they will fly into the capital city, Abuja. They’re also believed to be visiting Lagos and Kaduna.

    £650-a-night suite

Harry’s used to ‘slumming it’ in hotels these days. He’s booked himself into one for his upcoming London trip and did the same last year after finding his request to stay at Windsor Castle unceremoniously denied through ‘lack of notice’.

Ben Shemang, a former director of news at radio station Voice of Nigeria, with years of experience as a defence correspondent, says state visitors are typically hosted at the presidential headquarters, Aso Villa in Abuja, where recent guests included Bill Gates.

Indeed, when Charles and Diana visited Nigeria in 1990, they were invited to stay at the State House in Lagos, then the capital, but instead preferred to sleep aboard the Royal Yacht.

However, as this is not an official state visit, Mr Shemang predicts Harry and Meghan will be offered accommodation in another official building, such as an ambassadorial residence, or put up in a five-star hotel like the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

The towering hotel, set in picturesque landscaped grounds, features an on-site casino, spa, tennis courts and swimming pool. The Royal Suite costs £390 a night for bed-and-breakfast, while the top-of-the-range Executive Presidential Suite, with Art Deco interiors and panoramic tenth floor views, is £650.

    High-fliers

Despite their supposed eco credentials, Harry and Meghan may well fly privately to Nigeria, given their form using private jets, even on Invictus-related business.

If they do travel commercially, British Airway flies to Abuja daily from Heathrow — meaning Harry could fly from the UK in just over six hours.

Meghan, however, would have a much longer journey to join him, from Los Angeles via Istanbul or Frankfurt, with connecting flights adding up to 22 hours.

It is believed that some of the logistics of their trip will be organised by Clara Loughran and Beth Herlihy, who worked in Harry’s private office when he was a member of the Royal Family. Popular

Clara organised Harry and Meghan’s wedding, while former actress Beth became acting assistant private secretary for the Duchess after many of her staff quit.

The women lost their jobs when the couple left the UK and went on to form Herlihy Loughran, an advisory partnership linking ‘influential people and organisations to good causes’.
They were later re-employed by the Sussexes on a freelance basis to organise their charity work and travel in the UK and Europe, and have been heavily involved in Invictus from its inception.
In contrast to his parents’ royal visit in 1990, Harry is expected to make his own arrangements for secure cars and drivers.
One of the country’s leading private transport companies, CEFO Premium Logistics, which specialises in bulletproof vehicles and armed escorts, is run by ex-British Army professionals.
Its founder and CEO, Harrow-educated Folarin Kuku, trained at Sandhurst with Prince William and was the first black officer in the Grenadier Guards in 2012.
He also happens to be one of Nigeria’s leading polo players, so is likely to be on Harry’s radar.

    Splitting the bill
So who’s footing the bill for this expensive expedition?
A spokesman for Nigeria’s Ministry of Information and National Orientation told the Mail this week that visitors like Harry and Meghan usually pay for their own travel. Accommodation, he suggested, will most likely be provided as a courtesy by the host nation — but he wouldn’t confirm whether Nigeria is funding security, transport and other elements of the trip, as has been widely reported.
It is also possible that the Invictus Games Foundation may finance some of their stay.
According to the Charity Commission, the primary purpose of the foundation — which had an income of more than £2 million in 2022 — ‘is to facilitate and support the recurrence of the Invictus Games’, reportedly one of the main aims of this tour.
    Travelling team
Representatives from Archewell Inc, the umbrella company for Harry and Meghan’s businesses and charitable foundations, are expected to accompany the couple. Their operation is modelled on that of a royal household, meaning essential personnel from their private office will have been intricately involved in planning the trip.
Miranda Barbot, the PR guru who worked on Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, has recently been promoted to vice-president of programmes and media operations at Archewell. She’s thought to be the brains behind the tour and is likely to travel with them.
So, too, is Kyle Boulia, their newly-hired deputy press secretary, and the rest of their PR team.
Expect to see Netflix in attendance: the couple recently landed two lucrative deals with the streaming giant (one for a series focusing on ‘cooking, gardening, entertaining and friendship’, the other about ‘the world of professional polo’) and may well use the trip for filming opportunities.
A source close to the organising team in Nigeria confirmed that the Sussexes have their own media plan in place.
    Military muscle
Ben Shemang, former director of news at Voice of Nigeria, says Camp Wu Bassey, an Army barracks in Abuja named after Brigadier Wellington Duke Bassey, Nigeria’s first indigenous Army officer, will no doubt be on the couple’s itinerary.
There, they would be treated to a banquet with military officials inside the Scorpion Officers’ Mess, a regimental dining hall used for celebrations and ceremonies.
Terver Dominic, a resident of Abuja who grew up in the barracks, predicts Meghan and Harry’s hosts will put on a vibrant military cultural event known as WASA, or West African Social Activities, to entertain them during their visit.
It is an entire day centred around a ceremonial tug of war, which symbolises strength, discipline and teamwork. There is, Mr Dominic adds, plenty of ‘festive atmosphere and competitive spirit’ — and the couple might even be invited to take part.
    Polo and posh frocks
According to the Nigerian Bulletin, there will also be visits to sports facilities, meetings with athletes and activities ‘aimed at promoting mental health awareness, physical rehabilitation and the importance of sports in the recovery of service members.’
Ben Shermang says the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja is a likely venue for much of this. ‘They have a very big polo ground,’ he explains.
There’s also Lagos Polo Club, an hour’s flight away, an esteemed venue for tournaments with its own riding club, which would prove a useful base if there’s filming for Harry’s Netflix documentary.
Ben hints at a visit to Abuja’s Arts and Crafts Village, and also a meeting with the Actors Guild of Nigeria, the heart of the country’s burgeoning film industry, known as ‘Nollywood’.
‘They may also meet with Nigerian fashion designers,’ he adds — something that would appeal to label-loving Meghan, whose wardrobe choices will be closely-monitored. While her late mother-in-law, Diana, was in Nigeria, she made a point of wearing green and white — the colours of the country’s flag.
    Personal pilgrimage
Speaking to Nigerian-American comedian Ziwe Fumudoh on her now-defunct podcast Archetypes, in October 2022, Meghan gushed about her Nigerian heritage, which she’d uncovered by doing a genealogy test a few years previously.
‘I’m going to start to dig deeper into all this because anybody I’ve told, especially Nigerian women, are like ‘What!’ she said.
Harry referred to his wife’s lineage in his opening speech at the Invictus Games last year, and the pair spent time with Team Nigeria, with one competitor, Glory Essien, calling her ‘my Nigerian sister’.
Glory confirmed this week that she will be joining them during their visit to her country.
The team also gave Meghan a nickname: Amira Ngozi Lolo — ‘Amira’ means ‘warrior princess’, ‘Ngozi’ means ‘blessed’ and ‘Lolo’ translates as ‘royal wife’.
Derrick Cobbinah, an ex-British soldier, businessman and fundraiser who helped coordinate Nigeria’s Invictus debut, said she had been ‘deeply touched’ by the gesture.
‘She said she couldn’t wait to visit Nigeria for her mum and the kids,’ he added.
