Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) continued to pull away from the influence of his horrible mother Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) in Thursday (December 18)’s Emmerdale, when he defied her to help Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards).

Celia’s attempt to ruin Ray’s romantic relationship with Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy), and the way she totally belittled and humiliated Ray afterwards, has perhaps made him begin to realise that she doesn’t always have his best interests at heart.

When Bear gashed his hand while working and Celia brusquely told Ray just to fix him up enough for him to work, previously Ray would have done just that. But this time he secretly defied her, telling Bear he would drive him to hospital to get the wound cleaned and stitched up properly

Both Bear and Ray remembered that when Anya (Alia Al-Shabibi)’s wounds were left untended she eventually died from an infection. Ray has become quite fond of Bear – which Celia branded ‘pathetic’ – and didn’t want that happening to him.

At the hospital Ray reminded Bear – or Ted, as he calls him – that he couldn’t tell the hospital staff he was employed by Ray. They decided they would resend that Bear was his dad.

Then Bear spotted a sign on the wall, naming the hospital trust. ‘Are we in Leeds?’ he wondered. Bear has no idea where in the country he’s being kept, least of all that Celia’s farm is so close to his own family home that his granddaughter Eve once spotted him out in a field. Seeing that they were in Leeds must have made him realise that he wasn’t as far away as he thought.

A doctor came to look at Bear’s wound and noticed he had several other injuries, including a broken arm that had never mended properly. Bear only manages the pain from this injury because Ray constantly gives him painkillers, to which he’s now addicted.

Between them, Ray and Bear managed to give a convincing explanation of what had happened. Ray said his dad was often a bit clumsy in the garden.

Then he realised it was the first time in his life he’d called anyone ‘dad.’ Bear mentioned his own lad, without naming Paddy (Dominic Brunt), and Ray talked about his childhood and how he’d been a different person when his grandfather was alive, before he’d been ‘adopted’ by Celia.

In touching scenes, Bear gave Ray some fatherly advice, telling him he should still follow his dreams.

‘What if my dream included a lady?’ Ray said, thinking of Laurel. He talked about his vision of being a stepdad for Laurel’s children. Bear encouraged him not to give up.

Celia’s stranglehold on her empire seems to be crumbling by the day. In the same episode Moira (Natalie J Robb) had discovered that Celia had been defrauding her, and Moira and Cain (Jeff Hordley) are planning to confront her.

Ray has already defied her about Bear and he defied her again and went to see Laurel, asking her for another chance, which she agreed to. And when Laurel branded Celia as ‘toxic,’ Ray didn’t argue.

Celia is already making plans to leave the area and start again somewhere else – but can she count on Ray to be by her side?

And Bear now knows he’s in the same county as his son and the rest of his family, and his thoughts are turning back to Paddy more often. Could Bear possibly be home by Christmas?

Sir Keir Starmer’s party, meanwhile, slipped to third place in the Hetton ward by-election, with a share of just 22.7 per cent of the vote, falling behind an independent candidate who finished up on 25.6 per cent.

The results will come as a blow to Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, whose Houghton and Sunderland South constituency encompasses the Hetton ward.

Why the win is so significant

The seat is regarded as a ‘bellwether’ ahead of Sunderland City Council’s May elections.

Bellwether seats are constituencies where the local result tracks a wider voting trend.

Reacting to the by-election results, GB News’ deputy political editor, Tom Harwood, said: “I spoke to the candidate in this by-election on Wednesday.

“Sunderland goes to vote in May, and Reform were looking to the Hetton by-election for clues in terms of how that might go.

“Looks likely to be another Durham moment.”

Mr Farage said it was a “huge result” for his party.

“Labour pushed into third place. Bridget Phillipson would lose her seat if this was repeated at the next election,” the Clacton MP wrote to X.

As set out in our analysis above, Reform stormed to victory in the Education Secretary’s consistency, with candidate Ian McKinley elected.

Reacting to his win, Mr McKinley said: “From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the residents of Hetton ward for putting your faith in me to represent you on Sunderland City Council.

“I will absolutely not let you down!Thank you also to my Reform colleagues, I will never forget all you have done for me, and I look forward to working with you all in May.”

Good things come in twos

Reform marked a second by-election victory in the Hunstanton ward on King’s Lynn and West Norfolk council, filling a previously independent-held seat.

The election had been called following the resignation of long-time councillor Paul Beal due to ill health last month.

Reform candidate Fred Pidcock bagged 29.2 per cent of votes, followed by the Lib Dems with 25.6 per cent.

Labour, meanwhile, plummeted to last place, with 3.2 per cent.

It was a Lib Dem hold in the Barnoldswick ward on Pendle Council in east Lancashire.

Sir Ed Davey’s party stormed ahead, with candidate Bryony Hartley winning almost 60 per cent of the votes

Reform meanwhile fell behind with 26.2 per cent, while Labour again came in last place.

The by-election was triggered after the previous representative, Mick Strickland, decided to stand down from his role.

TV star Gil Gerard has passed away at the age of 82.

The Buck Rogers In The 25th Century legend’s wife, Janet, has announced he died at his Georgia home on Tuesday following a short battle with cancer. “Early this morning Gil – my soulmate – lost his fight with a rare and viciously aggressive form of cancer,” Janet shared in a Facebook post.

She continued, “From the moment when we knew something was wrong to his death this morning was only days. No matter how many years I got to spend with him it would have ever been enough. Hold the ones you have tightly and love them fiercely.” Janet also shared Gil’s heartbreaking final message, which he had left in a note for when he passed away.

Prior to his role on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Gil played Dr Alan Stewart on a total of 303 episodes of The Doctors from 1973 until 1976. The Arkansas-native star appeared in all 32 episodes of the series, which ran for two seasons from 1979–1981, and was broadcast on NBC.

Buck Rogers In The 25th Century was intended to capitalize on the popularity of Star Wars, incorporating more comedic elements. The show also starred the likes of Erin Gray, Felix Silla, Tim O’Connor, Eric Server, and legendary voiceover artist Mel Blanc

After Gil had recovered from his surgery, the show showed his “Buck Rogers” co-star Erin Gray, having a tearful reunion with him nearly a year after he went under the knife, by which time he had shed a whopping 140 pounds.

Looking back, Gerard asked, “If I hadn’t had this surgery, where would I be? If I was lucky,” he answered, “I’d be dead because I wouldn’t want to be living the life I would have been living a year later if I hadn’t had the surgery. I really did not want to die.”

After the news of the beloved star’s death broke on Tuesday evening, fans have since dashed to social media to pay their respects by praising his talents onscreen and his humility offscreen.

One fan shared, “RIP Gil Gerard – aka Buck Rogers, My older brother and I had a chance to meet him at a con once and he gave us his undivided attention. Pleasure to meet him.”

Former contestant on the British version of Dancing with the Stars, Thomas Skinner, seems to be the latest celebrity taking aim at the BBC after Donald Trump filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the network.

The British reality television personality, and pal of JD Vance, is reportedly taking legal action against the broadcaster, alleging that he believes the dance competition’s voting system was manipulated.

Reports suggest he thinks he possesses evidence that there was misconduct designed to boot him off of Strictly Come Dancing as quickly as possible. The Apprentice alumnus and his professional dance partner, Amy Dowden, received their walking papers early in the season.

The program combined judges’ scores from the opening two weeks alongside results from a viewer poll. Although the BBC never disclosed the exact number of public votes each celebrity received, Thomas allegedly believes he can demonstrate they intentionally minimized his tally.

A source suggests he’s now taking a page from the US president’s playbook by pursuing legal action against the network. An insider told The Sun, “Thomas is adamant he got a larger share of the public vote and believes he has the evidence to prove it. He is determined to see it through, but there’s no way the BBC will take this sensational claim lying down.”

The source continued, “They’ll robustly defend any kinds of claims that the voting was rigged or fixed.”

When approached for a response to these allegations, a BBC representative informed The Mirror, “Strictly Come Dancing’s public vote is robust and independently overseen and verified to ensure complete accuracy.”

Corporation insiders also confirmed to The Mirror that no legal complaint or documentation has been received regarding this issue. According to a source for The Sun, Thomas was allegedly invited back for the final this weekend, but there’s no chance he’ll accept.

The insider claimed that Thomas has been “embroiled in disputes with executives ever since he was sent home.” They added, “He’s convinced the BBC was determined to oust him as quickly as possible – regardless of how many fans rallied behind him.”

Despite these claims, it’s reported that Thomas’ absence this weekend is simply due to a previous engagement. Amy, however, will return to twirl with her fellow ballroom dancers.

Scott Mitchell says he is still haunted by the memories of witnessing the deterioration of his legendary actress wife Dame Barbara Windsor, who died five years ago tomorrow – but he’s determined to remember the good times.

 

The EastEnders icon, who played feisty Queen Vic landlady Peggy Mitchell for over a decade, died in December 2020 aged 83, six years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Her death was mourned by her millions of fans who fell in love with her glamour, comedy timing and ability to light up and command any stage or screen. Five years on, her widow Scott, 62, says Barbara’s infectious energy is “still very present”, but so too are the memories of what the disease robbed her of.

“I wish I never had to experience the terror in Barbara’s eyes, when she didn’t know where she was, who I was – who she was” he exclusively tells the Mirror.

“That haunts me. No human being should have to leave this world in the way those suffering with dementia do. Nobody. That’s why we have to keep talking about it.

He adds emotionally of the disease which now affects 1 in 2 people in Britain – either personally, or as a loved one caring for someone, “Having witnessed it first hand, developing dementia myself is actually my biggest fear – absolutely. I think it’s most people’s.”

Scott adds, “I’ve been thinking of how she was at the end – and it’s made me think about how vitally important it is that we all remember what Barbara stood for before this devastating illness took hold.

“And that was an incredibly vivacious, fun-loving, talented, positive lady who brought real joy to people’s lives. Still now, when people talk about her, they smile – they can’t help it.”

Together for 27 years, Scott, who found love again with former EastEnders actress Tanya Franks (Rainie Cross), says he still receives and takes comfort in “signs” from his late wife.

“I was asked to do a talk a couple of months ago at a literary festival in Gibraltar and I got lost in the hotel and found myself in the Windsor Room,” he says. “And the other weekend, I stayed on a housebarge not long ago by the river -the boat was called Little Babs. One of the other boats in the marina was called Peggy!”

He also visits her final resting place in Golders Green Crematorium, London, where there is a plaque in the West Courtyard which reads, “She was a good bird” – the obituary title she chose herself, on Piers Morgan ‘s Life Stories.

“We have a nice little chat, ” he explains. “Your loved ones are always with you, you know? I don’t believe people die and that’s the end of it. I believe our loved ones are around us.”

 

While she received her diagnosis of dementia in 2014, Barbara, who was appointed a Dame in 2016 for services to charity and entertainment, kept the news private for the next four years.

But the outpouring of love and support led to her to become an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society and a year before her death, she and Scott delivered a petition to Downing Street to highlight concerns over dementia care.

 

Scott tells us “charities have told me that she completely changed the narrative on dementia”. He now campaigns as the People’s Champion of the Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Goals Programme – put in place while Boris Johnson was still in office, and recommitted to by the current government.

“In the 10-year health plan just published, they mention this programme – and to me, that’s such an honour for Barbara.

“I’m passionate about social care, which we discussed at Downing Street five years ago. Five years on, and we know that people are still struggling desperately – it needs revisited. I know I can’t save the world, nor can Barbara’s name – but we can make a difference. And people desperately need to know help is on the way.”

Scott has also made an important decision – to no longer align himself to one charity, as he had done for the past five years with Alzheimer’s Research UK.

“I’m now open to supporting other dementia charities if I feel Barbara’s name is the right association for specific campaigns”, he says. “In the past I have said no, as I was more aligned with one charity. There are many areas of the Dementia world that I feel passionately about.”

And it’s not only Scott keeping Barbara’s memory alive. Famous faces such as David Walliams, Matt Lucas, Ross Kemp and other EastEnders stars – as well as Paul O’Grady before he died, not only continue to speak about her, but have been there for Scott since her passing.

“We have this niche of incredible people who’ve always been there. When somebody becomes ill like Barbara did, you really notice who drops away – who your real friends are. But they stood fast. Tanya and I go out with David and his mum a lot, we’re always reminiscing!”

Speaking of Tanya, Scott admits he has no qualms talking to her about his late wife. “She allows me to talk about Barbara any time I need to. In the same way she can with me. I’m never second-guessing if the moment’s right.”

Tanya will also regularly accompany Scott to his regular talks about the lived experience of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. He says, “The first thing I do is introduce Tanya and say, ‘Before we start I’d like to acknowledge my partner Tanya is here – and thank her for allowing me to share my story.”

“If I thought any of it hurt her, I wouldn’t do it. But she has her own invested passion when it comes to Alzheimer’s – her step-dad Derek died last year after an 11-year journey with it. We’re both passionate about campaigning.”

Scott met Tanya doing the London Marathon when various EastEnders cast members got together to run in Barbara’s name, when she was still alive. Tanya and Barbara’s time never crossed in Albert Square, but they met during training for the marathon.

“The team used to come to our house”, explains Scott, “and Tanya and Barbara got on really well. Barbara liked Tanya – she’d say, ‘She asks sensible questions about acting.’

“Tanya wanted to know all about theatre director Joan Littlewood, she knew her stuff and that meant a lot to Barbara. It was lovely that they did meet.”

But his new romance hasn’t been without judgemental comments. “There’s always that person that says, ‘That was quick!’ It’s easy to sit on the sidelines and cast judgement – especially with social media. These people forget that their words can really hurt.”

On the flipside, Scott gets many more people coming up to him, to this day, wanting to talk about Barbara. “The legacy she’s left is amazing. Every London cabbie asks me about her – they all say, she is ‘so missed’, popping up on TV – spreading that infectious laugh.

“Certain people truly earn the title of national treasure – Barbara was one of them. But for me, I’ll simply remember how she was, how loving she was with me. She made me laugh so much – she was true to herself, honest about her flaws and her past.

“She taught me a lot about getting rid of ego – I wasn’t as good at that in my younger days. People laughed when we first got together, but we lasted the course – it was unconditional love.”

He laughs, “It took us forever to go anywhere, she’d talk to everyone. It was like walking down the street with Tinkerbell. She loved other people and their stories – she would sprinkle her special fairy dust on everyone.”

This Christmas, Scott will be spending it with Tanya and their families. He says quietly, “You always look at empty chairs at Christmas. And we’ll be remembering our loved ones – as it should be.”
