Chris Rea’s Christmas tragedy: How singer’s family have been left heartbroken after he became the third of his siblings to die within just three months nh

Chris Rea‘s family have been left heartbroken after he became the third of his siblings to die within just three months, the Daily Mail has learned.

And in a further tragic twist the composer and singer of the ‘Driving Home for Christmas‘ anthem was said to have been overjoyed by the recent birth of a first grandchild shortly before his death on Monday aged 74.

Mr Rea’s older sister Camille Whitaker, 79, described his death as ‘tragic’ and said the sudden loss had left the family in shock coming so soon after two other deaths, of their brother and then sister.

Mrs Whitaker said the youngest of her six siblings, Nicholas, sadly passed away in a Yorkshire hospital in October from brain cancer, at the age of 66.

Then, just days after his funeral, Mrs Whitaker’s twin sister Geraldine Milward died suddenly.

Mrs Whitaker told the Daily Mail: ‘It is an awful pain. It is gut-wrenching what happened. The family has been quite shocked by it.

‘It is tragic. We can’t sort of get around it.’

Chris had been one of seven siblings, and his sister painted a picture of an idyllic childhood with her Italian father Camillo and English mother Winifred, in which Christmases were ‘wonderful’.

  • Cain Dingle’s FINAL Goodbye: Heartbreaking Death Caught on Camera! nh

Cain Dingle’s FINAL Goodbye: Heartbreaking Death Caught on Camera! nh

Cain Dingle’s FINAL Goodbye: Heartbreaking Death Caught on Camera!

The Yorkshire Dales trembles on the edge of a precipice as Cain Dingle sits at the center of a storm that won’t quit. For over twenty years, he’s been the raw, unspoken heartbeat of Home Farm and Wishing Well Cottage—a man of few words, fists that seal loyalty, and a Dingle name that feels almost sacred in its weight. Yet lately, something’s shifted in the air. Whispered rumors and glittering headlines swirl around him like frost on a window pane: is Cain really stepping off the stage for good? Or is it merely another Dingle Curveball designed to pull fans back to the screen, night after night?

The fan chatter isn’t random. It’s the chorus of a perfect storm brewing around his fate. On-screen, Cain has walked through fires that would melt a weaker man: the choking ache of grief, the brutal devastations that have carved lines into his weathered face. Off-screen, the industry’s shifting tides—budgets tightening, schedules shifting—add their own hurricane to the mix. The clash of personal tragedy with professional uncertainty fans the flames of dread: a beloved pillar teetering on the brink of departure, a weaponized question that makes every scene feel like a countdown.

First comes the Ice Stunt, a chilling image that seizes minds and won’t let go. A hand, trapped under the surface of a frozen lake, raised in a silent scream. But the photo isn’t empty symbolism. The wedding ring glints there, the bracelet Frankie Robinson made glints there too, a quiet thud of fate echoing through the fandom. The hand beneath the ice becomes a cruel harbinger, a visual riddle that fans read as either prophecy or peril. Is it Cain’s fate sealed beneath the ice, or is it a decoy laid by writers who love to toy with our hearts?

Then there’s a year that seems designed to grind a man down: the loss of his father, Zack Dingle, the terrifying brain tumor that jostles Moira, and the murder of his son, Nate Robinson. Grief piles upon grief, and Cain begins to dissolve into the background noise of the bottle, chasing shadows in a desperate, aimless chase to France. It’s the classic soap heartbeat—the fall of a man who’s learned to survive by being hard, by wearing his pain like armor, by keeping everyone at arm’s length except those who’ve earned a rare, battered trust.

Emmerdale fans 'figure out' who Cain is stood over in flashforward and it's not Nate - OK! Magazine

Add to this the real-world drumbeat: ITV’s budget talk, the tabloids’ feast, the surgical precision with which exit rumors are spun. It’s a perfect storm of speculation. Cain and Charity Dingle are often front and center in these discussions, as if their fates exist to draw us all deeper into the whirlpool of uncertainty. Yet even as the chatter swells, one voice remains grounded: Jeff Cordley, the actor who wears Cain’s skin. He admits the truth of the biz with a candor that’s part vulnerability, part veteran shield. He’s felt the tremors every year—the fear that a shelf life isn’t forever. But within those nerves lies a stubborn thread of possibility: a man who’s built a life on grit and loyalty might still refuse to vanish into the mist.

And so, the most persuasive truth begins to take shape: Cain Dingle isn’t going anywhere without a fight. Soap opera logic loves the exit tease—the mortal peril, the arrest, the courtroom drama that makes the audience lean forward in the dark. The Dales have thrived on this game of near-loss and near-reprieve, and the rumor mill knows its audience well enough to feed them a steady diet of suspense. The hand under the ice remains a looming, unsolved specter, a blade hanging over the future of a character who has become a mirror for resilience—someone who has done terrible things and shown tenderness in equal measure, whose journey has bent but not broken him.

Why does this rumor sting so deeply? Because Cain isn’t just a character in a script. He embodies something larger—a stubborn essence of the Dingle name, a veteran of chaos who somehow remained a steadfast guardian of his kin. If he were to exit, the village would feel a tremor in its bones, the Dingles would lose a shield, and the audience would lose a friend who has slept in their living rooms for a quarter of a century. It’s not merely about a character leaving; it’s about a shared memory, a rite of passage that fans have toasted, whispered about, and argued over in countless comment sections.

Yet the filmic logic of the show insists: danger builds, not silence. A man at mortal risk, a legal bind that tightens like a noose, a recent arrest that could pivot his fate in a heartbeat—these aren’t accidents of storytelling. They are strategic strokes designed to keep viewers tethered to the screen, to ensure that every episode arrives with a pulse in the throat. Even if the lips say “he’s not going anywhere,” the eyes reveal something louder: a possibility of goodbye that every proper goodbye seems to invite and invite again.

In the middle of this tempest, the truth flickers with a stubborn gleam. The rumors, as toxic as they are tempting, have a purpose. They spike the stakes, they give the audience a reason to lean closer, to replay scenes, to scavenge for clues in the edges of every frame. But just when the flame seems ready to leap, a stubborn assumption remains: the writers know how to wring emotion from the crowd, and Cain, a man forged by fire and loyalty, tends to resist the final, definitive exit until the story has dragged every last drop of meaning from his presence.

If Cain were to depart, what would the village become? The Dingle edge would dull to a dull thud, the timber of Home Farm would creak with less menace, and the drama would miss the dark romance of a man who could pivot from violence to protectiveness with the same breath. For twenty-five years, a room in every home has witnessed his life—his mistakes, his tenderness, his relentless drive to stand tall for the family that bears his name. To lose him would be to erase a piece of the audience’s own memory, to sever the thread that ties the everyday to the extraordinary.

And so fans wait, not for a confession of truth from the press or a scripted wink in an interview, but for the quiet, brutal truth that only the screen can reveal: will Cain Dingle walk away, or will he fight for a future that promises more than survival? The ice, the arrest, the heartbreak—these aren’t simply plot devices; they are the gauntlet thrown at the feet of a beloved figure, a dare to see whether the man who roars can also soften, can choose a life that defies the gravity of fate.

As the credits roll in our minds, the question lingers like a cold breath on a frosted pane: is this the end, or merely another breath before the storm breaks anew? The answer, when it comes, will land with the weight of a door closing, or with the light, almost reckless hinge of a door swinging wide to welcome a new dawn. Until then, the Yorkshire hills hold their breath, and Cain Dingle stands at the edge of a possible goodbye, eyes steady, heart stubborn, ready to write the next page of a legend that refuses to fade quietly into the mist.

Emmerdale’s Beth Cordingly says ‘that’s a wrap’ in ‘goodbye’ to the Dales

Emmerdale’s Beth Cordingly announced “that’s a wrap” as she bid farewell to the Dales ready for 2026 to arrive in just a few weeks time. As the festive season arrives in the Dales, it appears that Ruby Miligan is in for a much quieter Christmas this year as her former troubles fall behind her.

The actress made her Emmerdale debut last year as Ruby Miligan, wife to Caleb Miligan. Entering the Dales as a feisty character, it was earlier this year that viewers saw a different side to her.

When her estranged father Anthony Fox arrived in the village with her daughter Steph, it was later revealed that Anthony had sexually abused Ruby repeatedly when she was a teenager. His actions led to him fathering Steph which was confirmed by a DNA test that Caleb discovered.

Police make arrests at protest in city centre

Anthony ended up dead at the hands of Ruby following Aaron Dingle beating him up at the depot. John Sugden helped to clear the body in a location that was only recently shared following John’s own crimes being exposed.

Beth won the Best Newcomer award at the 2025 TV Choice Awards for her role, and has also received several other nominations for her work on the show, including awards for Best Actor, Best Leading Performer, and Best Actress at various ceremonies this year.

Taking to her Instagram, Beth looked back on her 2025 in Emmerdale as she bid farewell to the ITV soap for Christmas break. Sharing a video of her packing away Ruby’s wardrobe, the actress penned: “That’s a wrap”.

She added: “THAT’S A WRAP ON EMMERDALE 2025. IT’S CHRISTMAS !!! Thank you for all your support, we wouldn’t be here without you. Have a lovely Christmas and a Happy new Year and we’ll be back working hard with new stories next year”.

As the video transformed into the cast hanging out at the Christmas party for Emmerdale, Beth continued: “Don’t forget to watch us on Christmas Day”.

Fans of the ITV soap were quick to praise the actress, as @webkinny wrote: “Merry Christmas Beth! So excited to see what is for Caleb and Ruby next year! Keep being awesome!”

@looby666 echoed: “Love you as Ruby. Brilliant acting. What a year you’ve given us. Merry Christmas to you. And all good wished for 2026. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for Ruby.”

Another viewer, @penny_beardmore said: “Beth, you’ve been absolutely incredible this year – adore Ruby, what a character! Hope emmerdale are lucky enough to keep you for many years to come, you’re brilliant! Have a lovely Christmas, much love to you”.

Nickelodeon vet Tylor Chase checks into a hotel room with the help of a former costar… after being found on the STREETS

Former Nickelodeon child star Tylor Chase, who was revealed to be homeless in a recently-surfaced viral video, has checked into a hotel room thanks to the help of Daniel Curtis Lee, his one-time costar on Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide.

Chase, 36, portrayed Martin Qwerly on 33 episodes of the show from 2004–2007, while Lee, 34, played the role of Simon ‘Cookie’ Nelson-Cook on 54 episodes.

In a clip obtained by Daily Mail, the one-time child stars were seen sharing an emotional reunion with a hug, as Lee provided Chase with a warm, clean place to stay during Christmas week.

Lee in an Instagram reel Monday detailed the efforts he put into reconnecting with his one-time costar and providing him with a room.

Lee said that he got Chase on the phone with his father during the meeting, which buoyed Chase’s spirits.

‘Love is all we can we can really give people some time, and I’m happy that he was able to have that connection with his pops,’ Lee said.

Lee added that Chase ‘seemed super-receptive … to conversation’ about his future and ‘had a little little prayer going on at one point.’

Lee said that he spoke with Chase’s mother, who told him that giving him cash ‘might be dangerous’ and that he wanted to ‘respect her wishes’ as such.

Lee said that if anyone on social media was familiar with the process of establishing a trust ‘that’s contingent upon someone completing like a rehab or some type of process’ it could be the next step to help Chase turn his life around.

‘I really believe we can get Tylor back on his feet and you know I’m super feeling it right now with the holiday season,’ said the actor-comic. ‘He’s on my heart often, on my mind often.’

The update came a day after authorities in Riverside, California said it’s not immediately clear how long Chase has been living on the streets.

‘We do not know how long he has been experiencing homelessness,’ Riverside Police Department Public Information Officer Ryan Railsback told Daily Mail Monday.

Railsback added of Chase, ‘During all of our interactions, he has been cordial and cooperative with our officers.’

Railsback said that officers with the department’s Public Safety Engagement Team ‘contact him at least once a week and consistently offer a variety of resources, including assistance with temporary shelter options.’

Authorities told Daily Mail they have not been in touch with Chase’s relatives as he remains unhoused: ‘Regarding family, I am not aware of any attempts by officers to contact relatives on his behalf.’

Railsback previously told TMZ Monday that Chase has consistently declined shelter, drug or alcohol treatment, or mental health services offered by the department’s outreach division.

On its website, the Riverside Police Department says that its Community Engagement Division ‘strives to address emerging crimed trends, maintain safe school campuses, create safe parks and neighborhoods, reduce retail crime and develop working partnerships with all of our Riverside communities.’

As news of Chase’s living situation spread, another one-time child star who has battled homelessness – Shaun Weiss of The Mighty Ducks films – offered help.

Weiss credited his friend, businessman Jake Harris, for taking action to assist Chase.

‘Well, we were working on it and really Jake’s the one doing all the hard work,’ Shaun told Daily Mail.

Said Weiss: ‘I just made a video and Jake’s been out there literally combing the streets last night for him – and he finally found him and made contact with him.’

Weiss continued, ‘We tried to get him into a hotel last night and it didn’t work because really what happened was Jake had established a conversation with him and was working on establishing a rapport.

Weiss said the process was ‘difficult’ and ‘it can be tricky considering the state that Tyler’s in’

The Mighty Ducks alum said ‘Tyler seemed to be very receptive to getting treatment and to the idea of going into a detox.’

In an Instagram post, Harris said that he put Chase on the phone with multiple costars who ‘explained their love for him’ and how they hoped he would seek treatment.

‘He’s now in contact with all the right people to get him to help he needs,’ Harris said. ‘He has a hotel room tonight to give him time to make the decision on his own.’

Lee replied in the comment thread, ‘Thanks for getting the ball rolling for his treatment Jake.’

The son of Coronation Street favourite Debbie Rush, whose death was confirmed this week, was a devoted father and husband-to-be who had been planning a dream future before his life was cut short at the age of 31.

William Rush consistently celebrated his joy at becoming a parent, sharing photos of baby Frankie on social media and calling him “my world.” He was also due to marry his fiancée, Melissa, who is mother to the little boy.

It has now emerged that William got engaged to partner Melissa Cotterill, 36, in June 2024. The two frequently posted snapshots of their growing family, especially after welcoming Frankie in October last year.

The only public hint of any difficulties in William’s life appeared back in June 2023, when he posted a cryptic update saying he would be “going away for a few months,” without phone access. He then remained silent online for six weeks before returning and sharing images of his newborn.

Among the shared moments was a photo of baby Frankie dressed in a Manchester City onesie while being fed by his dad. In another, William described him as “the happiest little fella,” celebrating fatherhood daily.

William had long pursued a career in entertainment, following his mother’s footsteps. He first appeared  on TV in Grange Hill between 2005 and 2007 before landing schoolboy Josh Stevenson in Waterloo Road from 2009 to 2013.

The only suggestion of any possible difficulties in Mr Rush’s life came in June 2023 when he posted this cryptic message on social media

His acting credits also included roles in Vera and Casualty, and in 2014, he appeared briefly in Coronation Street.

William later shifted toward music, auditioning for The X Factor in 2016 at age 21. He performed Zara Larsson’s “Lush Life” and reached the third elimination stage. More recently, he returned to performing, touring local venues, competing in “battle of the bands,” and releasing original tracks.

Debbie Rush joined Coronation Street as Anna Windass in 2008. Her most memorable moment was her 2018 storyline involving Pat Phelan.

The family — Debbie, husband Andrew, and their three children — have now been left “completely broken,” with an “unimaginable grief” in the wake of William’s death.

In an emotional Instagram tribute, Debbie wrote:

“Our beautiful baby boy, William, passed away on 17th December. As a family, our hearts are completely broken… and there are no words to truly capture the depth of our loss. Even in our darkest moment, William gave the most precious gift — through being an organ donor, he has given hope and life to others. His kindness and love will forever be part of his legacy. We ask for privacy as we navigate this unimaginable grief.”

Tributes quickly poured in. William’s sister Poppy — also an actress with Coronation Street credits — is among those mourning.

Friends and colleagues have shared their heartbreak, including Denise Welch, who offered a heartfelt tribute on BBC Radio 2, and Corrie actress Sally Dynevor, who described William as a “beautiful boy.”

Waterloo Road’s Katie McGlynn recalled him as a kind soul who always made others smile.

William’s passion for performing emerged early when he played the Artful Dodger in Oliver at Bamford Academy. He credited the school’s headteacher for encouraging him to pursue acting.

Training at the Manchester School of Acting eventually led him to his first role in Shameless in 2007 — before his breakthrough on Waterloo Road, where he played Josh Stevenson in 70 episodes.

William leaves behind fiancée Melissa and their young son, Frankie — the centre of his world and the future he was preparing to build.

Star of Westlife Shane Filan previously recalled his devastation after losing both his parents to cancer within 12 months.

The Irish singer shot to fame in the boyband – who take to the stage today (December 21) at The Royal Variety Performance.

In 2019, though, Shane was hit with heartbreak when his mum died due to lung cancer. Tragically, Shane’s father died the next year from pancreatic cancer.

Shane’s beloved mum Mae died in 2019 after a battle with lung cancer. But before she passed away, the family were left reeling again when Peter was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“My dad had pancreatic cancer,” Shane said on Late Late Show Daffodil Day Special in 2021. He added: “It was so surreal at the time because my mum was sick.

“You kind of wait your whole life wondering when your parents are going to get sick, what’s going to happen to your parents. You think they are are superheroes.”

Shane says ‘it hit me like a steam train’

The pop star went on to discuss his shock after learning about his dad’s cancer diagnosis. He said: “That hit me like a steam train. Myself and my dad were very close, we were really, really close. I could talk to him about anything.

“The first person I would call after The Late Late Show would be my dad… he was like my best friend, I could talk to him about anything.”

Unfortunately, just several months after Shane’s mum died, his father passed away as well.

“It was just over nine months [between their deaths], my mum died in December 2019 just before the pandemic hit, and my dad died in October,” Shane said.

    It was very difficult.

Meanwhile earlier this year in August, Shane reflected on losing both of his parents.

Speaking to Andrea Gilligan on Newstalk’s Lunctime Live, Shane said: “My mum had lung cancer for four years, passed away in 2019. And my dad had pancreatic cancer, passed away sadly nine months later.

“It was very difficult, obviously, very, very difficult time for me and my family. It’s very difficult to deal with anyone having cancer, it’s a, it’s a very scary place and it’s still horrible to think about.”

Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) is the sweetest person in Emmerdale. Maybe all of Yorkshire. We’re talking about a woman who made her first appearance in the Dale dressed as a bumblebee. Pairing her up with a drug-dealing people-trafficker like Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) feels like a worse pairing than literally any couple from Love Island.

To viewers’ shock, Laurel has fallen head over heels for the smooth-talking criminal’s charms. For a woman whose relationship history includes Ashley Thomas (John Middleton), Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) and Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson), Ray is definitely not her usual type.

Actress Charlotte Bellamy explains why Laurel is so smitten ‘Ray is the most charming person and he totally has her hooked. So Christmas is really sweet, because she has no expectations. And of course, he has never really had a proper Christmas.

‘So it is full of warmth and love and you know, twinkly lights and a Christmas tree. He’s never had that. And of course, he’s just walked into this huge hug of Mulberry Cottage. So it’s a surprise for him as it is a surprise for Laurel.’

It’s been a surprise for the audience too. Given how Ray makes his money exploiting and manipulating vulnerable people, nobody ever expected him to have a softer side. But Laurel of all people has found it.

She gives Ray his first taste of warmth, happiness and stability, things that he has never received from his mother.

This genuine emotional connection has not only given Ray’s character more depth, but given the story some juicy conflict that may jeopardise Celia’s plans to flee the village before they are discovered.

Will Ray and Laurel get their happily ever after? Charlotte Bellamy is not optimistic.

‘Oh, my God, she’s going to get heartbroken, but he’s going to get his heart broken too. I think I’m excited about them finding out and seeing the other side of the monster that they think is Ray.
Ray in an embrace with Laurel in EmmerdaleLaurel has fallen for Ray (Picture: ITV)
‘That is the clever bit of this story. You hate his character because he’s so awful, but then the more you find out about him, you realise that he is actually just a product of being groomed himself and that he has never seen any other way. And so suddenly this woman has opened up his heart and he’s actually falling in love and he’s never had that before.

‘He’s never had a problem in getting women, but he’s never been emotionally involved or connected with them. And suddenly the goodness of Laurel is magnetic.’

Is it possible that Ray will find redemption in his love for Lauren and turn over a new leaf? ‘That’s the dilemma, isn’t it?’ Charlotte Bellamy explains.

‘Because on one hand, you think it’s not fair. (Ray’s) a product of mental, physical and emotional abuse. Did he ever have a chance when he was groomed from such a young age?

‘But on the other hand, you think, is he redeemable? He wants to be a good man. He desperately wants to redeem himself, but Laurel really is his only chance.’

Where Emmerdale’s Home Farm was once a family home bustling with people, there’s currently only one occupant – Kim Tate (Claire King).

After suffering a riding accident that damaged her leg and claimed the life of her horse, Kim was appalled to discover that the accident came about because her trusted employees, Sam and Lydia Dingle (James Hooton and Karen Blick), had organised an illegal shoot on her land and the participants had laid snares for rabbits, one of which had trapped her horse’s leg.

Kim felt most betrayed by Lydia, the woman she regarded as her best friend. She sacked her and Sam and ordered them out of the house.

Before this, Kim had fallen out with Joe Tate (Ned Porteous), whom she accused of trying to get his hands on her empire the minute she was incapacitated. She was also angry with Joe for being the one who authorised her beloved horse being put to sleep because of his injuries – even though he was acting on the vet’s advice.

Joe and Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) have been living in a cottage since they were sent away from Home Farm, but in Monday (December 22)’s episode Joe tried to make amends with Kim after he heard that Lydia had admitted her and Sam’s part in the accident.

Kim was having none of it and sent him away again.

In the wake of this he was seriously considering his future and, in the Woolpack, suggested to Dawn that they could move away from the village and start afresh. Dawn was reluctant to do this because she said the kids were happy where they were.

Joe insisted to Dawn that he loves her, and then he had an idea and headed off, telling her to meet him at the cottage later.

As soon as he’d gone, Charity (Emma Atkins) started to get into Dawn’s head about Joe. Charity is no fan of Joe because of the way he treated her daughter Debbie (Charley Webb), and then his plan to steal a kidney from Charity’s son Noah (Jack Downham), and you can see her point. She told Dawn that Joe would soon be gone and was probably off planning how to dump her.

Dawn got seriously worried that Charity was right, and ignored several phone calls from Joe thinking he was going to end things with her.

But a very different scenario unfolded when Dawn went outside. Joe was there in a smart suit, accompanied by a woman with a violin. As the violin played, Joe got down on one knee in front of Dawn – and, less romantically, in front of Charity, Aaron (Dany Miller) and Robert (Ryan Hawley).

As he was proposing, Charity was mouthing the words, ‘Say no!’

And Dawn said no. How much of this was Charity’s influence and how much was about her own reservations about Joe it was hard to tell. But poor Joe looked gutted. Trailed by his friend the violinist, he wandered off down the street.
