Good Morning Britain presenters and crew were tearful as the show’s set was torn down ahead of the ITV new year schedule shake-up, which was announced back in May 2025. From Monday Janaury 5 ITV daytime will have a new look with the flagship breakfast show extended by 30 minutes and Lorraine cut by half and hour. As part of the changes, filming is moving from ITV studios to ITN headquarters in Central London, while the other daytime shows will be filmed at The H Club in Covent Garden.

As part of the cost-cutting measures, at least 220 people have lost their jobs. “It’s terribly sad for the whole team. There are staff who have worked for ITV Daytime for years – from GMTV to Daybreak to GMB – also on Lorraine, Loose Women and This Morning….Many people who weren’t ready to leave yet are saying goodbye forever,” a source said.

“To see the sets pulled apart is devastating. Especially at this time of the year as well! The final broadcast from Television Centre was a very emotional one,” they told The Sun.

Nigel Farage has written to the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, urging her to revoke the British citizenship of Egyptian activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah and order his deportation from the United Kingdom.

The Reform UK leader said he was “deeply concerned” by Mr Abd el-Fattah’s return to Britain following his release from detention in Egypt.

Sir Keir Starmer had earlier said he was “delighted” to welcome Mr Abd el-Fattah to the UK after Cairo lifted a travel ban, thanking President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi for his role in securing the activist’s release.

Mr Farage described that response as “an extraordinary error of judgment”, pointing to historic social media posts allegedly written by Mr Abd el-Fattah between 2010 and 2012.

Those posts, which have circulated widely online since his arrival, include comments calling for the killing of Zionists, referring to British people as “dogs and monkeys”, and suggesting that police should be killed.

Mr Abd el-Fattah has also been accused of expressing support for suicide bombings.

“These abhorrent posts show Mr el-Fattah to hold views which are completely opposed to our British way of life,” Mr Farage wrote.

He added that claims Downing Street had been unaware of the comments only “compound the Prime Minister’s ineptitude”.

The Reform UK leader also criticised the breadth of political support that had previously been mobilised on Mr Abd el-Fattah’s behalf.

His letter notes that 35 Labour MPs and peers wrote to the then foreign secretary, David Lammy, calling for his release, alongside six Conservative MPs, 34 Liberal Democrat parliamentarians, seven SNP MPs and all four Green Party MPs.

“Indeed, it was the Conservatives who granted citizenship to Mr el-Fattah in 2021 while he was still imprisoned,” Mr Farage wrote.

“That none of those parties carried out basic due diligence on this unpleasant individual is, frankly, astonishing.”

Mr Abd el-Fattah became a British citizen through his mother, who was born in the UK, under a legal route that grants automatic citizenship by descent.

At the time, applicants using this route were no longer subject to the usual “good character” test, following a Supreme Court ruling that the requirement breached the European Convention on Human Rights. As a result, Home Office officials did not assess his past statements or conduct.

Mr Farage argued that the Home Secretary has the power to act now. “It should go without saying that anyone who possesses racist and anti-British views such as those of Mr el-Fattah should not be allowed into the UK,” he wrote.

“As Home Secretary, it is within your power to revoke his citizenship and order his deportation. I strongly urge you to do so.”

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Each year in the UK there are more than 55,000 new cases, and the disease claims the lives of 11,500 women. In the US, it strikes 266,000 each year and kills 40,000. But what causes it and how can it be treated?

What is breast cancer?

It comes from a cancerous cell which develops in the lining of a duct or lobule in one of the breasts.

When the breast cancer has spread into surrounding tissue it is called ‘invasive’. Some people are diagnosed with ‘carcinoma in situ’, where no cancer cells have grown beyond the duct or lobule.

Most cases develop in those over the age of 50 but younger women are sometimes affected. Breast cancer can develop in men, though this is rare.

Staging indicates how big the cancer is and whether it has spread. Stage 1 is the earliest stage and stage 4 means the cancer has spread to another part of the body.

The cancerous cells are graded from low, which means a slow growth, to high, which is fast-growing. High-grade cancers are more likely to come back after they have first been treated.

What causes breast cancer?

A cancerous tumour starts from one abnormal cell. The exact reason why a cell becomes cancerous is unclear. It is thought that something damages or alters certain genes in the cell. This makes the cell abnormal and multiply ‘out of control’.

Although breast cancer can develop for no apparent reason, there are some risk factors that can increase the chance, such as genetics.

What are the symptoms of breast cancer?

The usual first symptom is a painless lump in the breast, although most are not cancerous and are fluid filled cysts, which are benign.

The first place that breast cancer usually spreads to is the lymph nodes in the armpit. If this occurs you will develop a swelling or lump in an armpit.

How is breast cancer diagnosed?

Initial assessment: A doctor examines the breasts and armpits. They may do tests such as a mammography, a special x-ray of the breast tissue which can indicate the possibility of tumours.
Biopsy: A biopsy is when a small sample of tissue is removed from a part of the body. The sample is then examined under a microscope to look for abnormal cells. The sample can confirm or rule out cancer.

If you are confirmed to have breast cancer, further tests may be needed to assess if it has spread. For example, blood tests, an ultrasound scan of the liver or a chest X-ray.

How is breast cancer treated?

Treatment options which may be considered include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone treatment. Often a combination of two or more of these treatments are used.

Hormone treatments: Some types of breast cancer are affected by the ‘female’ hormone oestrogen, which can stimulate the cancer cells to divide and multiply. Treatments which reduce the level of these hormones, or prevent them from working, are commonly used in people with breast cancer.

How successful is treatment?

The outlook is best in those who are diagnosed when the cancer is still small, and has not spread. Surgical removal of a tumour in an early stage may then give a good chance of cure.

The routine mammography offered to women between the ages of 50 and 71 means more breast cancers are being diagnosed and treated at an early stage.

The Chase viewers have been left speculating on Bradley Walsh’s potential replacement if he is ever to quit presenting the ITV game show – with one popular BBC presenter and author coming in as the top choice. Over on Reddit, one fan speculated Bradley could be getting “bored” of the show after hosting it for 16 years.

Bradley began presenting The Chase in 2009, before landing spin-off show Beat the Chasers in 2020. In total, he’s hosted around 1000 episodes of the quizzes – and fans have presumed he might be getting sick of the regular duty. One Redditor said: “Don’t get me wrong, Brad is good at it. He just seems so totally bored and over it. He’s just flat. (Anyone would be surely, after doing it for that many years).

“He so clearly doesn’t care about people’s jobs or what they would do with the money. He just wants to get to the end of the show. He can be really funny when he puts in effort, and his impressions (like the Trump one) are sometimes hilarious.

“He’s clearly got great rapport with the chasers and he’s likeable enough. I just feel like he needs to take coke to get revved up and ready for each new episode!”

The mother of The Only Way is Essex star Mark Wright has defended herself from being labelled ‘the worst mother-in-law in the world’ to Michelle Keegan.

Carol Wright, 65, spoke about what it’s like to have a son who gets into a relationship, and admitted ‘it’s a hard one’.

She went on: ‘Everyone’s sons are […] they’re your sons and […] a woman comes along, and they do take your son.’

The mother-of-four has two sons, Mark and Josh. TV personality Mark is married to actor Michelle, 38, and football manager Josh is married to digital creator Hollie Kane Wright.

Speaking on her podcast, Wright at Home, with her two daughters, Natalya Wright, 25, and Jessica Wright, 40, the 65-year-old’s words came in response to a dilemma sent in by a listener.

It read: ‘Whenever my mother-in-law comes over, she acts like I stole her son’.

After her mum began to speak, Jessica interrupted: ‘Be careful what you say, mum, cause the narrative of you at the minute is that you were the worst mother-in-law in the world.’

Carol laughed and then continued with her point: ‘But, I’m a bit different, because I actually hold back, because of that reason.

‘I always think that when the girl comes into our family, they feel a bit overpowering [sic] because there’s so many of us, so […] I hold back a bit.’

Jess went on to discuss her frustrations with the narrative that her mum was an ‘evil mother-in-law’: ‘It was so bad’.

Carol agreed, adding: ‘It’s nothing like me, I’m totally the opposite’.

To which Jess replied: ‘You’re so not like that, and you couldn’t be more opposite with Hollie and Michelle’.

During their encounter, Carol revealed that Mark’s rumoured love interest at the time, Sam Faiers, was coming round for dinner, and some fans thought this portrayed Carol as a difficult mother-in-law.

When Mark and Lauren split, Carol said she felt ‘relieved’ because they weren’t right for each other, but said she’d always be there for her, according to The Evening Standard.

Around the time Mark and Michelle got married, Carol told new! magazine that Michelle was the ‘perfect partner’ for her son.

Well-wishers have raised £160,000 for a police officer after the unthinkable ƭɾagedÿ that claimed the lives of his wife and children in a house fire

More than £160,000 has been raised for a policeman who has ‘nothing left’ after his wife and two children died in a house fire on Boxing Day.

Tom Shearman tried to rescue his family who were trapped inside the devastating blaze at their family home in Brimscombe, near Stroud, Gloucestershire.

His wife, Fionnghuala Shearman, known as Nu, died alongside her daughter, Eve, aged seven, and four-year-old son Ohner.

Tom, who is a serving police officer in Gloucestershire Constabulary, was taken to hospital for treatment before being discharged.

A GoFundMe campaign was set up for the husband on Sunday, with almost 7,000 people contributing more than £160,000.

The original £110,000 target has since been increased to £190,000 after the ‘phenomenal’ support from the public.

The fire, which took off in the early hours of Boxing Day, caused the roof of the mid-terrace Cotswold stone cottage to fall in, while the ceilings and stairs have also collapsed.

The fire is understood to have started on the ground floor and is not being treated as suspicious.

Det Supt Ian Fletcher described how the parents were woken by the fire and tried to reach their children in the back bedroom.

He said: ‘Due to the ferocity of the intense fire, the parents were unable to get to the bedroom.

‘The father smashed his way out of the house via a bathroom window in order to try and get to the children’s bedroom from the outside, however he was unable to do so.

‘When he returned to the bathroom, the fire had spread and despite all of his determined efforts, he was unable to re-enter the home via any point in which he tried.’

DSI Fletcher said there were ‘multiple witnesses who describe the anguish that he was going through, his inability to get in and save his children and save his wife.’

The body of one child has since been located at the scene.

Police said they are still working to recover the second child’s body, but the property’s unstable condition means officers have to proceed with caution.

Lucy, who set up the GoFundMe, said:  ‘Tom is now facing an unimaginable period of grief alongside the very real and immediate practical reality of having nothing left.

‘This fund has been set up to help support them with the practical needs he’s facing now and in the months ahead – including emergency accommodation, clothing and essentials, time away from work and the many unexpected costs that arise during a period like this.’

The fundraiser has now received more than £160,000 from 6,900 people.

Victoria Armstrong, who is also coordinating the fundraiser, thanked well-wishers for their support.

She said: ‘The loss to the families, friends and our community is almost unbearable but what Tom has already gone through, and now faces is unimaginable.

‘Our wonderful community has shown that they are here for Tom and the families in a very real, very meaningful way.

‘The support this fund has received in a little over 24 hours is phenomenal.

‘We respectfully request that the privacy of the family, friends & community is respected at this horrific time.

‘With love and in heartbreak, may we slowly start to heal together.’

A cordon remains in place at the address, and an emergency services presence is expected to continue for several days as the site is structurally unstable.

A friend described what happened as ‘absolutely shocking’ to the Daily Mail.

She said: ‘We are all shellshocked to be honest with you. We don’t know what happened [to cause the fire].’

Another family friend said the tragedy was ‘dreadful.’

A spokesperson for the Gloucestershire Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers, said: ‘This is an unimaginable tragedy to have struck a colleague and their family and our hearts are broken for them.

‘It is impossible for us all to properly comprehend and come to terms with what has happened.

‘The Federation are offering as much support as is possible to our colleague at this deeply saddening time.

‘We are also supporting devastated colleagues and teammates of the officer concerned.

‘We know the whole police family across the UK – indeed the whole of the UK – will be offering their condolences.

‘And we thank those who have already passed on their thoughts and support. It is appreciated.’

Mrs Shearman was born in Cheltenham and ran a successful business making canvas and leather bags.

As founder and designer of her firm, Hide & Hammer Ltd, she announced earlier this month that its workshop would be closed for the foreseeable future.
