Kate Garraway and Adil Ray welcomed war veteran Alec Penstone on Good Morning Britain on Friday (November 7). Proudly wearing his medals, Alec told the hosts that he didn’t feel the sacrifice of World War II was “not worth” how the country has turned out today.

He told the hosts: “What we fought for was our freedom, but now it’s a darn sight worse than when I fought for it.” Kate interjected as she added: “Alec, I’m sorry you feel like that and I want you to know that all the generations that have come since, including me and my children, are so grateful for your bravery and all the other service personnel.”

But she was accused of talking to him like a child by both viewers at home and Talk TV host Kevin O’Sullivan. He fumed: “Kate Garraway and Adil Ray there patronising that war veteran, talking to him like a child.”

He then mimicked Kate’s apology and fumed: “He’s 100 years old! I hate it when people treat old people like they’re children. But what a powerful statement, what a powerful indictment of this country. I’ve never seen anything like it. Television, folks, can still produce extraordinary moments.”

Kevin continued: “All of these woke warriors, all of these politicians, all these tyrants who tell us what we can and cannot say, they should hang their heads in shame. This nonsense is not what Alec and his brave comrades fought for.”

People continued in his comments, with one user writing: “Thank you for saying that, I was thinking the same. The way she treated an elderly man and pushed his concerns aside as if his time had come and gone. We know what side of history GMB is on.”

“A powerful typhoon which struck the Philippines has now passed into the South China Sea, leaving at least two people d3ad and causing widespread flooding,” Sally began, reports the Express.

“Typhoon Fung-wong hit the country’s east coast last night as a super typhoon, with winds reaching speeds of 143 mph. Nearly one million people were evacuated after warnings of a high risk of threat to life.”

BBC correspondent Jonathan Head subsequently outlined the concerning situation in a pre-recorded segment from Cabanatuan City in the Philippines.

“Well, the storm has actually long since passed but, as you can see, it’s still raining very heavily,” he said.

“The big concern for this community, and so many others that are low-lying in the Philippines, is actually these water levels are now rising very fast. That’s because the huge amounts of rain that were dumped by the typhoon have collected on the mountains, and they have soaked the terrain there.

“They’re filling up the rivers and that water is feeding down to cities like this one lower down.”

Jonathan continued: “We’ve really watched this water come up and we see people wading into their houses, retrieving possessions, furniture, pets as well.

“They now realise that even people who might have a second floor, this water might rise that high. It’s an illustration of the many different, unpredictable risks that come with typhoons.

“The challenge initially was to protect people from the ferocity of the storm as it passed through this area… There’s a lot of clearing up to do, but these rising water levels are a real concern.”

The correspondent concluded: “[Although] this typhoon appears to have left the country far less damaged than expected, there are still dangers that it has left behind.”

оn the eve оf the mоst significant day оf the year fоr Britain’s Armed Fоrces, veterans frоm the greatest generatiоn have been given a “cast-irоn” Ministry оf Defence prоmise all future оverseas trips will be fully funded.

It means giants frоm the 1939-1945 cоnflict will be able tо hоnоur pals whо fell acrоss the Channel fighting fоr freedоm until they are nо lоnger able tо dо sо.

Dоrоthea Barrоn, 101, whо jоined the Wоmen’s Rоyal Naval Service in 1943 and taught semaphоre tо sоldiers ahead оf the D-Day landings, said: “At my age, peоple оften ask why I still make the jоurney tо Nоrmandy and the Netherlands. But it’s nоt abоut me – it’s abоut them, the оnes whо never came hоme. It gives us the chance tо stand tоgether, tо hоnоur оur friends where they fell and tо say, ‘Yоu are nоt fоrgоtten.’

Amоng thоse heading the parade оf Secоnd Wоrld War veterans thrоugh Whitehall in central Lоndоn will be D-Day liоnhearts, fоrmer Rоyal Marine Jim Grant and Mervyn Kersh, whо fоught with the Rоyal Army оrdnance Cоrps, bоth 100, and Rоyal Navy herо Henry Rice, 99.

All three will be amоng thоse hоping tо travel tо Eurоpe tо pay their respects next year but with mоst veterans nоw at least 100 years оld, the many are becоming the few.

The tоp-level funding pledge is a mоnumental victоry fоr the campaigning Express and its army оf readers and means herоes will nоw be able tо participate in events marking the anniversaries оf Dutch Liberatiоn, D-Day, and оperatiоn Market Garden, a failed Allied battle immоrtalised in the 1977 epic A Bridge Tоо Far.

Fоr many, next year’s trinity оf cоmmemоratiоns will be a valedictоry salute.

The news is alsо a majоr bооst tо charities already planning the trips because they receive nо statutоry funding, existing entirely оn fundraising and public dоnatiоns.

Between them Spirit оf Nоrmandy Trust and the Taxi Charity fоr Military Veterans are hоping tо take 20 veterans tо mark the 81st anniversary оf Dutch Liberatiоn in May, the 82nd anniversary оf the Nоrmandy Landings in Nоrthern France in June, and оperatiоn Market Garden in September.

Despite their age and mоbility, indefatigable veterans see the crоss-Channel pilgrimages as highlights each year and fоr decades they have been immоveable dates in their diaries.

The cоmbined cоst оf the trips, including travel, fооd and accоmmоdatiоn, a carer fоr each veteran, and medical assistance, is arоund £500,000.

Richard Palusinski, Chairman оf Spirit оf Nоrmandy Trust, said: “This is a right and just decisiоn and is warmly welcоmed by the veteran cоmmunity. My sincere thanks gоes tо the Express and its readers fоr their unwavering cоmmitment and understanding.”

The MоD’s pledge cоmes after the Gоvernment was accused оf “betraying” the memоries оf the war dead by initially reneging оn a cоmmitment tо cоugh up fоr оverseas remembrance ceremоnies.

The tab fоr this year’s trips – the year in which Britain marked the 80th anniversary оf Victоry in Eurоpe Day – was eventually picked up but оnly after a humiliating U-turn.

In April Number 10 said mоney wоuld be available fоr Eurоpean cоmmemоratiоns оnly fоr that prоmise tо be cоntradicted by the Department fоr Culture Media and Spоrt, which said funding was nоt prоvided fоr “оverseas events”.

Veterans called snub the “ultimate betrayal” with the resulting backlash fоrcing Veterans Minister Al Carns intо an abоut-turn.

The MоD tоld the Express it “had listened” tо the resulting anger with its cоmmitment recоgnising the “prоfоund impоrtance оf enabling veterans tо pay their respects at the sites where they served and where their cоmrades fell”.

оn Mоnday the Gоvernment will publish its Veterans Strategy which will “transfоrm gоvernment suppоrt fоr herоes” and оutline plans tо recоgnise veterans as natiоnal assets.

Lоuise Sandher-Jоnes, Minister fоr Veterans and Peоple, said: “Having attended the Afghanistan memоrial event at the Natiоnal Memоrial Arbоretum and felt the pоwer оf marking such anniversaries alоngside thоse yоu served with, I understand hоw vital these оccasiоns are fоr оur Secоnd Wоrld War veterans tоо. That’s why this gоvernment is cоmmitted tо funding travel suppоrt fоr (veterans) attending оverseas remembrance events, starting next year.

“This is abоut ensuring that thоse whо gave sо much can return tо hоnоur the friends they lоst while they still can. оur fоrthcоming Veterans Strategy will set оut hоw we’re putting veterans at the heart оf this gоvernment’s priоrities – and suppоrting оur Secоnd Wоrld War generatiоn tо attend these cоmmemоratiоns is where that cоmmitment begins.”

D-Day warriоr Ken Hay, 100, whо was captured and held as a prisоner оf war, said: “I will gо back tо Nоrmandy as lоng as I am fit and able tо dо sо.

“We are the lucky оnes whо returned hоme as sо many made the supreme sacrifice. While we can, we will always salute them.”

Dоn Turrell, 100, returns each year tо visit the graves оf pals William Carr, 19, and Rоbert Bremner, 29, whо perished fighting with The Camerоnians  in 1944.

He said: “Trips and events with the Taxi Charity are always truly wоnderful. They give us the chance tо remember, tо share stоries, and tо feel part оf a very special family.

A 100-year-old veteran shocked the hosts of Good Morning Britain today by declaring that winning World War II ‘wasn’t worth it’ due to the state of the UK.

Alec Penstone told Adil Ray and Kate Garraway how he quit his factory job to sign up for the Royal Navy and fight for his country as soon as he came of age.

The war hero recalled serving alongside close friends, many of whom lost their lives, and called himself ‘just a lucky one’ for having survived.

Asked by Ms Garraway what Remembrance Sunday meant to him, the veteran said he felt that winning the war was ‘not worth’ how the country had turned out today.

His concerns about the state of the nation are shared by an increasing number of Britons, with a new survey revealing national pride has plummeted and society is more divided than ever under Sir Keir Starmer.

In findings which will send alarm bells ringing in Downing Street, eight in ten said they felt the nation was divided – up five percentage points from two years ago and ten points from 2020.

Commenting on the survey results this morning, former Tory minister Michael Gove argued ‘mass immigration’ was partly to blame for the perception that Britain felt more divided.

The poll found Reform voters were most worried about the cultural state of the nation, suggesting Nigel Farage’s party stand to make big gains in future elections.

And half of the public said Britain’s ‘culture’ was changing too fast, up from a third.

The veteran did not specify the factors he believes are responsible for Britain’s decline.

Consoling him, Ms Garraway chimed in: ‘Alec, I’m sorry you feel like that and I want you to know that all the generations that have come since, including me and my children, are so grateful for your bravery and all the other service personnel.

‘It’s our job now to make it the country that you fought for, and we will do.’

Reassured, Mr Penstone continued: ‘It’s so wonderful to know there are people like you who spread the word around to the younger generations.’

Baron Gove, the former Secretary of State for Education, suggested this morning that concerns about changes to Britain’s culture were linked to ‘mass immigration’.

‘I think you can’t separate the question of mass migration from the question of a common culture,’ he told BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme.

‘The rate at which a society changes demographically can be accepted, managed, tolerated, and indeed welcomed by the host population if there is a feeling that the culture they cherish is not being challenged or changed.

‘One of the problems with the current pace of migration is not just the numbers, which obviously put a pressure on public services, but it is also the sense that new arrivals are not being invited to share in a common culture.

‘That culture is either being wrenched out of shape or is fragmenting under pressure.’

The new survey about national pride was carried out by researchers at King’s College London and pollsters Ipsos, who have been tracking UK cultural trends annually since 2020.

They branded their latest set of findings ‘frightening’ and said they laid bare an increasingly divided, polarised and downbeat society.

They also highlight how much of the public thinks Labour has failed to get to grips with several of their key priorities – and has potentially even fanned the flames of division with its wavering stance on issues like trans rights and Net Zero.

 

Lord Young of Acton, boss of the Free Speech Union, said: ‘This is the effect of Labour’s divisive identity politics.

‘Sir Keir Starmer and his ministers have been pandering to minorities who claim to be the victims of intersectional oppression, prioritising their rights and needs over those of ordinary Britons.

‘Labour politicians justify this two-tier approach by claiming it promotes community cohesion, but in reality it creates social division, as this poll makes clear.’

Reform UK MP Lee Anderson said: ‘Of course national pride has fallen. The education system is corrupting our youth, leadership has been weak for decades and millions can no longer afford a home of their own.

‘For patriotism to flourish, Britons need strong leadership and the confidence that their government is working for them, not against them.’

Sir John Hayes, chair of the Tory common sense group of MPs, said: ‘Keir came in with no clear defining purpose.

‘So people are feeling at sea because they think the Government doesn’t know which way it wants to take the country in.

‘The absence of a plan from Government doesn’t build popular confidence.

‘Ideological multi-culturalism basically said to people you can live how you like, do what you like, you don’t need to mingle, you can be introspective, and then we’re surprised that we’ve got a fragmented society.

‘We have to deconstruct that and have more people buying into British values and a shared sense of Britishness.’

The survey found  48 per cent said they would like the country to ‘be the way it used to be’, up from 28 per cent.

Strikingly, nostalgia for Britain’s past rose in every single age-group, even among 16 to 24-year-olds.

Nearly a third of this age group wanted the country to return to how it ‘used to be’, up from 16 per cent in 2020.

The next biggest jump was in people aged over 55, which soared from 34 per cent to 62 per cent.

National pride across all age groups also plummeted, with less than half (46 per cent) saying they were ‘proud’ of their country – down ten points from 2020.

The most prominent drop was among 16 to 24-year-olds (47 per cent to 29 per cent), followed by 35 to 54-year-olds (54 per cent to 43 per cent).

Across all age groups, 86 per cent said they believed there were greater tensions today between immigrants and people born in the UK, up from 74 per cent two years ago.

Nearly seven in ten who took part in the study cited ‘culture wars’ issues as being central to widespread divisions, up from less than half (46 per cent) in 2020.

Among the cultural issues to spark public anger in recent weeks has been the decision by some ITV stars not to wear poppies while presenting their shows.

They include Kevin Maguire, who was seen without one on GMB on October 29.

While the left-wing journalist did not address his decision, he has previously told of opting not to wear until the week before Remembrance Sunday.

Meanwhile, Loose Women host Charlene White defended her decision not to wear a poppy on screen, insisting she had taken the decision to avoid being seen to favour a particular charity.

She said: ‘I support the [Royal British Legion], I donate to its work, I believe in its work, and I wear a Poppy off screen.

‘But I believe in the impartiality rules which exist in broadcasting regarding charities.

‘You may not agree with me, and I genuinely don’t expect everyone to, but disagreement does not legitimise the abuse.’

Calling for the debate around the issue to be re-focused she said: “I think we have stopped looking at what the problems are when there are these great shifts of people,” she said.

“Most people would much rather remain in their own homeland. We all have a great protection feeling to our own homeland. The reason they move is that either it cannot yield enough food for them to live on, or the warfare is such that they’re in danger of their lives, or they want a better life,” she said.

“How are we in the world going to spread this back again so you can stay in your fabulous country,” she asked.

“You can grow crops, you can have factories and things like this, you can have schools and hospitals, everything can work here, but it must have been made safe and stable and functioning.

“You don’t get to that stage by putting up fences. You do something else. I’m not sure how it is, because the world is not thinking, always thinking keep them out, stop that, stop that, stop that.

“There’s a lovely sentence which I read over in a bookshop in Paris, it comes from the Bible, ‘And the Lord said be not inhospitable to strangers, lest they be angels in disguise’.

“We’ve just got to be so careful about this because everybody’s frantic about numbers,” she acknowledged. “Of course, a tiny country can’t support millions and millions of people, but we’ve got to start thinking outwards a bit more,” she said.

Her remarks come as recent official figures show 57,643 people have come to the UK by small boats since Labour took power in July last year.

The 10,000 mark of illegal migrants crossing the Channel was reached before the end of April, more than a month earlier than the year before.

In September 2025 a single dinghy brought 125 migrants to Britain – the largest number a small boat has carried across the Channel.

Ellie Goldstein has shared a ‘cheeky’ update alongside Vito Coppola as their partnership continues following their Strictly Come Dancing exit.

Fans of the hit dance show were gutted to see the joyful duo, known as the ‘Cheeky Team’, become the fifth couple to leave the BBC One dance contest at the weekend.

During Saturday night’s (November 1) Halloween special, they performed the tango to Lady Gaga’s Abracadabra in a magic-themed performance, which saw the model and actress pulling her dance partner, dressed as a bunny, out of a hat.

But their Hallowen treat turned into a trick, as they were then seen landing in their first dance-off during Sunday’s (November 2) results show, with the pair having to fight for their place in the competition against actress Balvinder Sopal and dancer Julian Caillon.

After both performances, the judges delivered a unanimous verdict. Anton du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse all opted to save Balvinder and Julian, sealing Ellie and Vito’s departure from the show.

After the news was confirmed, Vito spoke movingly about being partnered with Ellie and made a vow to ‘keep dancing’. And that was proven just days after their last show.

Taking to Instagram, Ellie shared a picture of herself and Vito beaming as they gave each other high-fives back in the training room. Alongside the post, the 23-year-old wrote: “What a great day spending it with my @vitocoppola. Never stop dancing!”

Vito then reshared the post to his own Instagram Story and gushed: “Your big brother loves you so much,” before adding a heart GIF.

The pair were then seen on Tuesday (November 4) heading out for lunch together. Ellie shared a picture of them both, snuggled in close to one another as they smiled for the camera.

With their meals in front of them waiting to be tucked into, Ellie penned on her Instagram Story: “Cheeky @nandosuk for the Cheeky Team.”

Her new pal then reshared the post to his own Instagram Story, adding: “Your big brother is always by your side,” before adding: “Let’s have a cheeky lunch.”

Gloria Hunniford tragically lost her husband of 26 years, Stephen, last summer. Now, she has opened up on her ongoing grief and how her love life is currently going as she navigates life as a widow.

The 85-year-old television presenter opened up on how life continues amidst grief, her unwavering faith, and her focus on cherishing the wonderful memories they created together. Speaking to OK! Magazine, she said: “Stephen and I had 30 years together. Some people never get 30 years of happiness, but I did, so as much as he is a huge loss, I am very grateful that I had that time with him. I was very lucky and have been very lucky in my life.” Gloria also feels fortunate to continue living in the home they shared. “I’ve lived in that house for 40 years, so I love coming home. We were talking on Loose Women about happy places and I was saying I have a few happy places but I’m lucky in that I’m very happy going home to my own house. We have a lovely time there, so it’s full of memories.”

When questioned about the possibility of finding love again, Gloria responded: “It’s not even in my head. It’s too raw yet. It’s only been just over a year. But I like having male friends who I’ve had for decades – I like talking to them.”

One such friend is the renowned Sir Cliff Richard. “He’s a very lovely friend, a good friend and very loyal,” she said. “I’ve known him 55 years.” The Loose Women presenter also lost her beloved daughter Caron Keating to breast cancer in 2004 at the tender age of 41.

During an episode of Loose Women: The Podcast, Gloria previously opened up on her surviving family, including her many grandchildren.

She shared that she has four grandchildren from her side, while her late husband, Stephen, had “many on his side.” Together, they had ten grandchildren, providing her with “quite a lot of experience.”

She recalled that when her daughter, Caron, had children, Gloria felt, “rightly or wrongly” that she almost had an “automatic right” to visit whenever she wished.

Gloria revealed: “And I used to, for example, if Caron was working, I could call in, see the grandchildren, read them a story, put them to bed, and she wouldn’t even know that I’d been there, but that’s because we had a very close relationship. She loved it when I went to see the grandchildren.”
