His death tore the family apart

Sports TV icon Gabby Logan was just 19 years old when she lost her brother. He – Daniel Yorath – was 15, and having a kickabout with their dad Terry in the back garden when his heart suddenly stopped.

Gabby’s world “came crashing down” as she struggled with the aftermath of his death. Her dad warned her against using sleeping pills to cope. She felt “utterly scrambled”. Still, it made her “fearless”, she said.

“I wasn’t worried about failing or looking a fool, because, well – what could hurt me as much as his death had?” she said.

In a recent interview with the Times, Welsh sports journalist and radio presenter Gabby Logan- who fronts the BBC’s women’s Euros coverage – recalls seeing her brother Daniel for the last time.

She was 19 at the time.

Their father had spun out of control following Daniel’s sudden death – he suffered with depression and drank to numb the pain. Eventually, his marriage to Gabby’s mother fell apart.

And there she was, in the funeral parlour, looking at her 15-year-old brother. She made him a promise: “I am going to do everything I can to make your life count.”

“Yes,” she says now. “To live my life for two people.” And she has.

The tragedy drove her to achieve. She developed a competitive streak, and learned the hard way – via a stint on Strictly Come Dancing – that “sometimes not everyone likes you”.

She’s glad she’s married to a ‘normal bloke’

In the wake of her brother’s death, Gabby had to pull herself together. As the eldest of four children, she took it upon herself to do as much as she could for the other members of the family.

Nevertheless, the disruption it caused to her relationship with her father led to an unhealthy pattern when choosing men in a dating context.

“For a few years I sought the company of not very appropriate, older men,” she wrote in her memoir, The First Half. “I was probably wanting to mend something because our family was quite broken, because of my brother dying.

“I felt I could create something like a family, a happy place. Those were the relationships I was pursuing. But a bit of guidance from a therapist helped me recognise those patterns were not healthy.”

Nowadays, she’s grateful to have married a “normal bloke who isn’t an addict”. Kenny Logan is her “number one”, and that doesn’t look like it’s about to change.

Dubbed the People’s Princess, the royal often spoke up and advocated for others that deserved a bigger spotlight. What did Princess Diana do in Angola?

Princess Diana visited Angola in 1997, during a period of peace from a civil war that had been raging on for 20 years. While it was peace time, the conflict continued the following year and would do so for another four.

The war left the country with more than 15 million landmines scattered near towns and villages – with devastating consequences. During the time of Princess Diana’s visit, one in every 330 people living in Angola had lost a limb.

Her influence has been said to help launch the Ottawa Process, set up by supportive countries, like Canada, Belgium and Norway.

However, as incredible as it was, her actions also ruffled feathers. Earl Howe, junior defence minister at the time, described the royal as “ill-informed” on the issue and called her a “loose cannon”.

When asked about the upset she caused, she said she was “only trying to highlight a problem” worldwide.

Princess Diana added: “I’m not a political figure, nor do I want to be one. I come with my heart and I want to bring awareness to people in distress, whether it is in Angola or any part of the world. The fact is I am a humanitarian figure, always have been and always will be.”

But it didn’t stop her, she delivered a powerful speech at the Royal Geographical Institute in London that June. Later, in August, Princess Diana travelled to Bosnia to see work being done to remove the landmines and meet victims of the cicil war in the country from the 1990s. This was only weeks before her death.

In the months before her tragic death, Diana’s main focus was campaigning for the deactivation and banning of anti-personnel landmines, which the princess saw the first-hand consequences.

She was not allowed to speak in Parliament, which is why a conference was set up instead.

Diana called the mine a “stealthy killer”, adding “long after conflict is ended, its innocent victims die or are wounded singly, in countries of which we hear little. Their lonely fate is never reported”.

The mum-of-two continued: “I am not a political figure. As I said at the time, and I’d like to re-iterate now, my interests are humanitarian. That is why I felt drawn to this human tragedy. This is why I wanted to play down my part in working towards a world-wide ban on these weapons.

“During my days in Angola, I saw at first hand three aspects of this scourge. In the hospitals of Luanda, the capital, and Huambo, scene of bitter fighting not long ago, I visited some of the mine victims who had survived, and saw their injuries.”

“Even if the world decided tomorrow to ban these weapons, this terrible legacy of mines already in the earth would continue to plague the poor nations of the Globe,” The Princess of Wales said. ‘”The evil that men do, lives after them”‘

“And so, it seems to me, there rests a certain obligation upon the rest of us.”

Why did Princess Diana walk through landmines?

The walk through the landmines was not only a symbolic act, but to raise awareness and challenge governments to stop their use.

Her brave act drummed up support to ban them, and placed pressure for demining efforts to remove the catastrophic weapons that were hidden in plain sight.

Princess Diana said in her own words one of the reasons she decided to walk through landmines in Angola.

She said: “One of my objectives in visiting Angola was to forward the cause of those, like the Red Cross, striving in the name of humanity to secure an international ban on these weapons. Since them, we are glad to see, some real progress has been made.”

Prince Harry follows in her footsteps

The Duke of Sussex followed in his mother’s footsteps to raise awareness for The Halo Trust’s work to clear landmines, almost 30 years after she embarked on the mission herself.

The 40-year-old met the Angolan President Joao Lourenco this week at the beginning of his trip. He also met survivor Sandra Tigica, who met his mother as a teenager.

It comes after a visit in 2019 where he said the problem with landmines ‘would likely be solved’ if his mother was still alive.

Harry also said he has been keeping Princess Diana’s mother’s legacy alive by talking to his son Prince Archie about landmines and her trip to Angola.

At the beginning of the year, he spoke to CTV, a Canadian TV channel ahead of the Invictus Games.

He explained: “Archie was asking about landmines so I was talking about how some of these guys were blown up.”

“I think IEDs [Improvised explosive devices] are probably a little much at this point but I found myself talking to him about mines, he’s five years old,” he then said.

And not for singing along to the Kanye West song, it’s claimed…

MasterChef presenter John Torode wasn’t sacked from the BBC show for singing a racist slur used in the Kanye West track Gold Digger, it’s now been claimed.

According to reports earlier this week, the 59-year-old celebrity chef and TV presenter repeated lyrics from the Kanye West track, which contain the highly offensive word N-word slur. It’s alleged it was said at an after-work ­series wrap party six or seven years ago.

John is then alleged to have used the word again while talking to a friend on the BBC show’s production team. However, BBC News now reports that the allegation that actually got him fired relates to his alleged use of the word the previous year.

John Torode sacked amid racism allegations

John was axed this week following a probe by the BBC and production company Banijay. It came as part of the investigation into his ­ MasterChef co-host Gregg Wallace.

John denies ever using the N-word. He is said to be “devastated” by the accusations.

Earlier this week, it was reported that John twice sung the racial slur that features in the Kanye West track Gold Digger. On the alleged second occasion, John Torode used the slur as an “example” while speaking to a friend. He “apologised afterwards”.

The person who raised the complaint is said to have overheard the conversation.

However, overnight, BBC News published a new report. It claims that John wasn’t fired over that alleged incident, but one that took place the previous year. As a result, it’s now been claimed that the widely reported incident from earlier this week was not the complaint upheld by the report.

Instead, this is said to relate to another incident a year earlier. Then, John allegedly used the same word on set after filming an episode of MasterChef. And, it’s claimed, it was directed at a member of staff.

The news site added that the upheld allegation of racist language was one of nine complaints made against Torode in the report. It’s claimed allegations that were not upheld related to allegations of abusive language towards junior production staff and sexual language.

‘The clean version of the song is the only one he knows’

Meanwhile, a source is reported to have told the tabloid John wasn’t familiar with the uncensored version of the Kanye hit.

They are quoted as saying: “One of the allegations is that he said the N-word while repeating Kanye’s Gold Digger song during a gathering with his colleagues when filming had ended. John is adamant he would never have used the N-word and only knows the radio version of the song which says ‘Now I ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger, but she ain’t messin’ with no broke, broke’. The clean version of the song is the only one he knows.”

The source added: “John has said he cannot recall the conversation and he would never use the N-word. He knows it is unacceptable and says he would never have said it.”

They reportedly added that John only found out about the issue a few weeks ago. It is said to have “hit him like a ton of bricks”.

Will Masterchef return to TV?

A source reportedly added John is being supported by his wife Lisa Faulkner, as well as friends. They are said to be “keeping him close because he has really been struggling.”

They are said to have added: “John abhors this kind of language and does not recall ever reciting a racist slur in a lyric, or directing one to someone he considered a friend at work. He adored MasterChef. It was a huge part of his life. To have it all ending like this is awful.”

John’s former co-host Gregg Wallace, 60, was confirmed to have been sacked earlier this month. That followed a six-month inquiry into alleged misconduct which upheld 45 out of 83 allegations.

Despite the show’s longtime presenters being sacked, it is claimed the final series of MasterChef will still air “once the dust has settled”.

Fiona was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s in 2022

Fiona Phillips has been seen in a new video shared by her husband Martin Frizell.

Martin shared the video last night (July 18) to his Instagram account. It showed the former TV presenter enjoying an ice cream and a walk in the park with her husband.

Fiona, who has early-onset Alzheimer’s, also shared a touching message with her fans.

Fiona and Martin have just released Remember When: My Life With Alzheimer’s, a memoir that charts her battle with the disease.

The 64-year-old star was diagnosed with the disease in 2022, when she was 61. She went public with the news the following year.

Now, she’s thanked fans for all their support.

In a clip filmed by Martin, Fiona said: “Hello, thank you for reading my new book! Really good of you, hope you like it. Okay, bye.”

He captioned the post: “Out for a walk and an Almond Magnum on a hot London afternoon and some words of gratitude for all the kind folk thinking of delving into her book.”

Martin and Fiona were met with an outpouring of support after posting the clip.

Susanna Reid posted: “Loads of love to you both.”

Trisha Goddard said: “Sending you lots of love, Fiona. You were so kind to me when you came up to my house in Norfolk to do my first interview after I was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2008. More than just a colleague… A truly kind, talented and beautiful person! And you’re pretty good, too Martin!”

Alice Beer also shared a message. She said: “Congratulations to you both on getting the words on the page. I think you will really help the many many others in a similar situation.”

‘Slow goodbye’

The video clip came after Martin shared a number of insights into what life is like for Fiona now.

Speaking on This Morning earlier this month, he revealed that she is battling a “secondary diagnosis” that’s left her in “a lot of pain”.

He also shared that he and their two grown-up sons – Nathaniel and Mackenzie – are having to say a “slow goodbye” to the TV legend as she battles the degenerative disease.

Their book also reveals that they briefly split ahead of Fiona’s diagnosis, as Fiona began to struggle with the early stages of the cruel disease.

Astronomer CEO Andy Byron – who’s now been suspended – was seen in what looked to be a very friendly embrace with a colleague in a box at the Chris Martin gig. Following the scandal, fans and internet sleuths have been diving into the lives of everyone involved.

Who was Andy Byron with at the Coldplay concert?

During the band’s show at Boston’s Gillette Stadium on Tuesday night (July 15), part of their Music of the Spheres World Tour, the camera projected a man, Andy Byron, with his arm around a woman’s waist on one of the big screens showing the gig.

After trying to hide from the camera, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin quipped: “Oh look at these two! Oh what? Either they’re having an affair, or they’re just very shy.”

Footage that’s gone viral on social media and video-sharing platforms shows 50-year-old Andy Byron, CEO of private data infrastructure and operations company Astronomer, with his arm around the waist of his co-worker Kristin Cabot. He quickly let go of Kristin and crouched down, while she covered her face with her hands.

Per the Daily Mail, Andy appeared to remark: “[Bleep]ing hell, it’s me.” Chief people officer Kristin the seemed to say: “This is awkward.”

The original TikTok, posted by another concertgoer, has amassed almost 50 million views and five million likes.

Does Kristin Cabot have a husband?

It’s reported that Kristin divorced a Kenneth Thornby in 2022. The New York Post reported that they have at least one child together. Now, the Mail reports that Kristin is currently married – to another company CEO. The woman at the centre of the kiss cam scandal is currently married to Andrew Cabot, the chief executive of Privateer Rum, the paper claims.

It is unclear exactly when the pair tied the knot, but documents confirm that Kristin was married at the time of selling a $1.8m property earlier this year.

As well as her Astronomer work, she is an advisory board member for Privateer Rum.

Who is Andy Byron’s wife?

Andy is married to and has children with Megan Kerrigan Byron. After Megan faced a deluge of people commenting on her recent Facebook posts to tell her about the concert incident, she reportedly dropped Byron from her name. She then deleted her Facebook and Instagram account.

While it is unclear how close Andy and Kristin remain to their respective spouses – with it appearing they may both live apart from them, though not with each other – they were certainly not keen to be filmed in such an intimate clinch.

Andy, who became CEO of Astronomer in 2023, wrote about Kristin in November 2024 (via Page Six): “Kristin’s exceptional leadership and deep expertise in talent management, employee engagement, and scaling people strategies will be critical as we continue our rapid trajectory.

“She is a proven leader at multiple growth-stage companies. And, her passion for fostering diverse, collaborative workplaces makes her a perfect fit for Astronomer.”

He has since deactivated or deleted his LinkedIn account.

A former colleague told the New York Post that former employees were laughing about the incident in group chats and “enjoying the hell out of what happened and him getting exposed”. The source went on to describe him as a “toxic” boss.

What’s everyone said about the incident?

After first making a joke, Coldplay’s Chris did also express remorse for his quip during the same gig.

“Oh [bleep], I hope we didn’t do something bad,” he said. He later joked, after the camera landed on another man and woman: “Are you a legitimate couple?”

Andy’s ‘apology’

On X (Twitter), it was reported that Andy had shared a statement in his capacity as CEO, in which ‘he’ apologised.

However, other X users pointed out that the account sharing the statement purported to be that of a CBS News journalist, but had 50 followers, a crude name and an AI-generated profile photo. It also signed off with lyrics to the Coldplay hit Fit You.

Overnight (July 18), the company he works for has shared two statements.

The first read: “Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability. The Board of Directors has initiated a formal investigation into this matter and we will have additional details to share very shortly. Andy Byron has not put out any statement, reports saying otherwise are all incorrect.”

Further details did indeed follow. A new statement this morning stated that an interim CEO has now taken over. “Cofounder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy is currently serving as interim CEO given Andy Byron has been placed on leave. We will share more details as appropriate in the coming days.”

Heading for divorce?

As well as his job seeming to be on the line, could Andy’s marriage also go down in flames?

If it is, the Mail reckons it could end up costing Byron a “sizeable” piece of his fortune. It’s estimated to be around £60m.

Meanwhile the Coldplay fan who shared her mobile phone footage of the incident has no regrets.

Grace Springer, 28, told the US Sun: “A part of me feels bad for turning these people’s lives upside down. But play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I hope their partners can heal from this and get a second chance at the happiness they deserve. My video was a blessing in disguise.”

Comes after the death of her brother and an ADHD diagnosis

Actress Martine McCutcheon has been declared bankrupt, it’s been reported, less than a year after her husband Jack McManus called it quits on their marriage.

The former EastEnders actress announced her split from Jack last August. At the time she shared a statement and said: “After much thought and consideration, Jack has decided it’s best for us to separate after 18 years together and I accept his decision.”

Martine McCutcheon sells family home

After the split, the couple put their marital home on the market for £1.5m. Before Christmas, the price of the house was dropped to £1.25 million amid claims the couple were “pushing” to sell it. It is said to have sold for £1.35m in May.

Now Martine has been hit with a further cash blow, with reports today (July 19) that she’s been declared bankrupt.

According to the Mail, documents show that Martine filed a petition for her insolvency over a debt to a finance company.

Bankruptcy and company wound up

It was issued in March at the County Court in Guildford, Surrey following a petition filed by a company called LDF Finance, to whom she owed an unspecified sum of money.

As well as that, her company Raven Music Ltd was also wound up last month at the request of HMRC due to unpaid tax bills, it’s claimed.

The most recent accounts for the company reveal that it owed more than £175,000 to the taxman, payable in the 12-month period after February 2022.

Second bankruptcy

This is the second time the actress has been declared bankrupt. She was first made bankrupt in 2013.

It’s now thought Martine – who described her marriage break-up as “brutal” – has downsized and lives in a three-bedroom rented Victorian terraced home in Surrey.

‘I needed this’

The actress hasn’t yet commented on the reports. Her last Instagram grid post was four weeks ago.

Back in June, she shared that she’d enjoyed a day out with Rafferty on the river at Hampton Court. She captioned it: “Wow… I needed this more than even I thought!”

The popular star’s money troubles only add to her heartache. As well as her break-up, the star also lost her brother suddenly in 2022, and was recently diagnosed with ADHD. She also suffers from chronic illness ME.

In her new memoir, released this week, Fiona Phillips writes about her experiences of competing on Strictly Come Dancing alongside professional dance partner Brendan Cole in 2005.

“I really don’t remember much of that time now – maybe I blocked it out because all I recall is the sense that it was incredibly traumatic,” she writes.

“I was on the brink of tears most of the time and felt utterly exhausted,” she continues. “And it all seemed so pointless. Brendan would be swinging me around the dance floor for a paso doble and I’d be thinking, I’ve just put Mum in a care home, what on Earth am I doing dressed up to the nines in a dancing competition?”

She concedes that she “probably have told the crew” – or at least Brendan – “how much I was struggling” with her mum’s Alzheimer’s, but she didn’t. “I just stumbled on,” she writes. “Literally.”

The pair of them left in the fourth week of the competition. Their elimination was for the best, she writes, although she’s not sure Brendan saw it that way at the time.

“It was all over on Bonfire Night. What a relief!”

Cole appeared in the first 15 series of the long running BBC One dance competition. He and Natasha Kaplinsky won its opening series, as well as the 2017 Christmas Special.

However, he announced in January 2018 that his contract had not been renewed, and he would not be returning for a 16th swing of the hammer.

He revealed during an interview on ITV‘s Lorraine that the BBC had made an “editorial decision” not to have him back on the show. He also said it left him “in shock”.

After he left the show, Fiona told the Daily Star that Brendan had been “really naughty” during their time together on the show, per the Mirror.

“Brendan was a real [bleep] actually. He wasn’t very nice. He was really naughty. He’s not on the show now. Karma indeed. It works its way every time.”

Prince Harry’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, could go to school in the UK, an expert reckons, amid recent claims of a royal family “peace summit” taking place.

The children of Prince Harry, 40, and Meghan Markle, 43, have barely spent any time living in the country of their father’s birth. Prince Archie, now six, was born in London. But after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped away from royal duties, the family left Britain in the spring of 2020. Princess Lilibet, meanwhile, did not arrive into the world until a year later. She was born in California in the US.

However, despite Meghan’s reported reservations about her kids being educated in Britain, a former royal butler has speculated that UK schooling could align with recent royal approaches.

It comes amid claims that a “peace summit” took place recently between aides of the king and the Sussexes. It has sparked rumours of a possible reconciliation between Harry and Meghan and the royal family. They have remained estranged for some years now.

Will Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet go to school in the UK?

According to Hello! magazine, former royal butler Grant Harrold pondered whether Harry and Meghan Markle might weave British schooling into their offspring’s US upbringing.

He is reported to have told Study Dog that Prince Harry is “quite keen” for Archie and Lilibet to experience being educated in the UK.

When asked about whether the younger Sussexes might attend school or university in the UK, Mr Harrold is said to have responded: “It’s very likely and completely possible.”

Additionally, he reportedly went on: “If they have their younger education in America, I’m sure their father will be quite keen to have a bit of a British education. But then it depends on how the relationship is with the rest of the family when the time comes.”

Will Meghan object?

Prince Harry previously indicated in 2024, during an appearance on Good Morning America, that he “very much enjoy[s] living here and bringing up my kids here”.

Meghan has also expressed concerns about schools in the UK before now. She told The Cut in 2022: “If Archie were in school in the UK, I’d never be able to do school pickup and drop-off without it being a royal photo call with a press pen of 40 people snapping pictures.”

She added at the time: “Sorry. I have a problem with that. That doesn’t make me obsessed with privacy. That makes me a strong and good parent protecting my child.”

Nonetheless, Mr Harrold hopes the two kids will get a taste of schooling in the UK.

“Time will tell,” he added. “But I’d like to think that they would get a bit of education here. As royals normally do some gap year somewhere.

“The king famously went to Australia. So it is possible that coming to the UK could be part of that for Archie or Lilibet.”

The daughter of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, Gina-Maria, claimed a stunning victory at the reining world championships in Switzerland last week.

Reining is a horse-riding competition, where riders guide their horses through a pattern of circles, spins, and stops, with competitors arriving from all over the globe to represent their countries at CS Ranch in Givrins.

The ranch is also owned by Gina’s mother, Corinna, and her daughter’s victory represents a major family milestone, where the 28-year-old took home the gold in the senior professional riders individual competition and earned a score of 225.5.

Gina shared her achievement on social media, alongside a clip of the winning performance, where she thanked her horse Valentino.

“Valentino — thank you!” she wrote on Instagram.

“You’re the kind of horse we all dream of having, and I’m beyond lucky to call you mine. 2025 World Champion looks so good on you! Double gold for Germany.”

Gina married her partner Iain Bethke in September 2024 at the Schumacher family’s luxury villa in Majorca, sharing only one picture of the newlyweds to her Instagram.
