    McLaren chief Zak Brown has aimed a dig at his nemesis Christian Horner after he was sacked by Red Bull.

    Horner, 51, was relieved of his duties earlier this month after 20 years in charge of the constructor, which under his leadership won eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ championships.

    Horner’s dismissal came a year and a half after he was caught up in a major controversy that threatened to engulf the entire team.

    He was accused of sexual harassment and coercive and controlling behaviour by a female employee following the revelation of alleged sex texts sent by the 51-year-old, who is married to former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell.

    He was twice cleared, initially after an internal investigation conducted by a lawyer, and then by another lawyer who dismissed the female employee’s appeal. Horner has strongly denied the claims throughout.

    But while Red Bull backed their man throughout the unfolding saga in 2024, relations have undoubtedly cooled in the following months before he was dismissed.

    And Brown, who had a long-running rivalry with Horner, was asked about the Brit’s dismissal ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, the first race since his exit.

    ‘I’m maybe [surprised by] the timing, but not the result,’ Brown told Canadian TV channel TSN. ‘I think there’s been a lot of drama there the last couple of years, and it doesn’t seem like that drama has been calming down – maybe been getting worse.

    ‘So, I’m not surprised, anytime in the middle of the season. But we’re head down on our championship. They’ve got Max [Verstappen] still knocking on the door, so we’ve got to pay attention to that. But, yeah, tremendous amount of success they’ve had.’

    Horner has been replaced as Red Bull team principal by Laurent Mekies and is expected to serve a period of gardening leave until the end of this year.

    And when asked what the future holds for Horner, Brown felt this wasn’t the end of the 51-year-old’s career.

    ‘Given his age and his history in motor racing, I’d be surprised if he didn’t show up somewhere in motor racing,’ the American added.

    ‘But I don’t know his other interests, whether he wants to go run a football team or what have you. So, we’ll see.’

    Brown’s rivalry with Horner came to the fore on Netflix’s Drive to Survive documentary, with fans accustomed to their intense relationship.

    However, when speaking to The Telegraph in March, Brown insisted his turbulent relationship with Horner is real.

    Brown had said: ‘Oh, it’s genuine. There’s no love lost there. I don’t like how he rolls and no doubt he feels the same about me.

    ‘But I think it’s good for the sport. You need different characters. You need these rivalries. Some are friendly, sporting rivalries. Some are a bit more vicious. It’s always been like that.’

    Sordell played for both Bolton and Burnley in the Premier League, but is perhaps best known for his time in the Championship for clubs including Watford, Charlton and Burton Albion.

    His company has already gained “early support” from the Nigerian government over the prospect of getting the nation to host a grand prix.

    According to The Times, the plans include far more than simply hosting a race in the capital city of Abuja.

    The pledges made by Opus outline the building of a karting track, hotels, a technology hub, and a motorsport museum, among other infrastructure.

    Nigeria’s chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, invited the promoter to Nigeria in April to present a concept of their grand F1 designs.

    And the proposal seemed to have left Dikko impressed, because a month later, the promoter was officially appointed to negotiate with F1 and the FIA on behalf of the Nigerian government.

    F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has also reportedly been invited to Abuja by Opus to review the project.

    SunSport understands that talks are at a very early stage, while there is also heavy interest from other nations.

    Domenicali, 60, has repeatedly spoken about his desire to expand the motorsport into new markets.

    Africa is a major omission from the modern F1 calendar, with the last race on the continent happening at the Kyalami Circuit in South Africa back in 1993.

    The only other nation F1 has been to on the continent is Morocco, all the way back in 1958.

    F1 legend Lewis Hamilton has been a major voice pushing for the sport to add a race in Africa.

    Both South Africa and Rwanda have been among the front-runners linked with that lucrative possibility.

    However, speaking in May, Domenicali ruled out a race happening anytime soon, saying: “Realistically speaking, I don’t think we’re going to have an outcome in the very short term.”

    A new European track in Madrid is being added next year in place of Italy’s famous Imola circuit.

    Meanwhile, Thailand appears on course to be the next new addition to F1.

    That’s after the government there agreed to a roughly £890million funding plan for a street race in Bangkok, which could debut as early as 2028.

    The 2025 F1 season returns in Belgium this weekend after a two-week break following the chaotic British Grand Prix.

    A storm in the Netherlands on Monday saw the Circuit Zandvoort flooded, with an alarming photo posted on social media just six weeks before the Dutch Grand Prix

    Heavy rain battered the Netherlands on Monday, flooding the Circuit Zandvoort, where next month’s Dutch Grand Prix will take place.

    A storm caused flooding in the coastal town, with reports of 50 centimetres falling at the start of the week. Streets in the centre of the town have been flooded, with the fire department and police forced to pump the excess water.

    Local reports said the town’s water reservoir was full, meaning the reservoir by the Circuit Zandvoort was used as a back-up.

    An alarming picture was then posted on social media showing a huge channel of water cutting across the tarmac of the track. It shows lots of surface water, sand and debris on a corner, next to a giant grandstand for viewing.

    The Dutch Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on the final weekend of August and at this stage there are no concerns about the flooded track, with no apparent damage to the infrastructure.

    The only impact it did have was to prevent local university students from using the track on Monday. NH News reported that a Delft University of Technology student team was due to test their hydrogen-powered race car there, but couldn’t.

    Student Renzo Bootsma said: “Our car runs on hydrogen, but it can’t handle that much water. It’s a shame, because we were supposed to do our first longer test drive tonight.” Meanwhile, F1 Academy was due to commence the first of two days of testing on Tuesday.

    Global warming means that flash flooding has become more and more frequent – and, like any industry, F1 has been affected. In March, the circuit in Jerez, Spain, was severely flooded, with the track that hosts MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix damaged as a result.

    And in May 2023, the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Italy was cancelled after deadly flooding in the region. Rivers burst their banks, forcing people to evacuate their homes.

    A statement at the time read: “The decision has been taken because it is not possible to safely hold the event for our fans, the teams and our personnel and it is the right and responsible thing to do given the situation faced by the towns and cities in the region. It would not be right to put further pressure on the local authorities and emergency services at this difficult time.”

    F1 president and chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali added: “It is such a tragedy to see what has happened to Imola and Emilia Romagna, the town and region that I grew up in, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the flooding and the families and communities affected.

    “The decision that has been taken is the right one for everyone in the local communities and the F1 family as we need to ensure safety and not create extra burden for the authorities while they deal with this very awful situation.”

    Laurent Mekies, Racing Bulls chief, was appointed as his successor as the motorsport world reeled from the exit of a figure who had steered the team since their F1 debut in 2005.

    The choice to part company with Horner arrived 18 months after he became embroiled in a WhatsApp controversy. An unidentified female Red Bull staff member alleged ‘inappropriate conduct’, which Horner strongly refuted.

    Purported messages attributed to Horner were disclosed to media outlets and team personnel in the paddock, leading to an internal investigation, but he was exonerated of any misconduct. Nevertheless, just one season on, his Red Bull journey has reached a brutal conclusion.

    Close associates of the motorsport chief have now voiced concerns about his dismissal, with Horner allegedly feeling “betrayed” by the F1 outfit. One confidant revealed to The Sun: “Christian told me how hurt and betrayed he felt after all that he and Geri and their family have been through over the past 18 months. He was cleared twice over the texting scandal but is now on gardening leave.”

    It wasn’t Ozzy’s final appearance as he also made it to Comic Con Midlands days later for a meet and greet with himself plus Sharon, Jack and Kelly.

    Those lucky enough to see the icon in person described him as a “metal godfather” that “blessed us” with music.

    A fan who was one of the last to meet Ozzy at Comic Con Midlands has told the Mirror he feels “numb” at the news. Singer Pip Marsh attended the convention with a friend to meet his ultimate hero earlier this month.

    “I’ve just seen the news, I’m devastated,” he said. He added: “It doesn’t feel real, I’m numb.” He went on to comment: “I’m gutted. I’ve always had this weird connection to Ozzy, he lived not too far from where I grew up. One of my first ever big shows was on the same line-up as Sabbath, it’s wild. I feel numb.”

    Before tonight’s tragic news, Ozzy had told how he hoped to carry in recording even though the Villa Park gig would be his last “goodbye” to fans.

    The singer revealed in a new interview before the concert that he still had projects he hoped to complete despite his Parkinson’s disease.

    He added: “I still enjoy doing my own work. I also enjoy singing on other people’s work. For the foreseeable future, I will keep on recording if the projects interest me. It’s very important.”
