‘Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy was so painful, I had to leave the Premiere halfway through’

    * WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD * Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy presents a harrowing exploration of grief, loss, pain, and the enduring power of love – so this is a warning not to forget your tissues

Bridget Jones – she embodies the timeless charm of a woman both frazzled and steadfast, lost yet deeply rooted, as she bravely navigates the endless whirlwind of life’s trials and tribulations.

Arguably, she’s the woman of my generation. She has always been one of my biggest idols and inspirations, and she’s probably one of the reasons I became a journalist. A character so unapologetically herself, so cemented in who she is, it’s hard not to look up to a woman like her.

At the age of 32, an age similar to my own, she boasted a glorious one-bed apartment smack bang in central London (I could literally never).

Carelessly waltzing through the bustling Borough markets on her way home from an exciting day’s work with Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) she was seen contemplating which one of her posho loverboys she’d choose – before they ultimately descended into a war-like battle for her love – smashing birthday cakes and breaking windows along the way. (In stark comparison, my luck in the love department came to a bittersweet end just before Valentine’s Day. Brutal, I know).

There are so many differences and stark similarities between myself and the Bridget we all first met back in 2001. But it’s the 2025 version of Bridget – the grieving Bridget – that I have never related to more. So much so, that I had to exit my seat briefly at the London premiere earlier this month in a bid to escape the embarrassment of my flowing tears. I went to have a cry in the bathroom in peace (ballgown and all).

In Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Renée Zellweger, 55, reprises her iconic role, bringing depth and authenticity to a character who has matured gracefully over the years.

Directed by Michael Morris, this fourth installment in the series presents a poignant exploration of grief, loss, pain, and the enduring power of love – themes which hit me deeper than I thought a Bridget Jones movie could ever hit.

Set several years after the events of Bridget Jones’s Baby, the film opens with the heart-wrenching revelation that Bridget’s beloved husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), has tragically passed away during a humanitarian mission.

Now a 51-year-old widow, Bridget is left to navigate life as a single mother to their two young children, Billy and Mabel. The weight of her loss is palpable, and the film does not shy away from depicting the raw, unvarnished reality of her grief.

Bridget dabbles in the world of dating apps - much to her dismay
Bridget dabbles in the world of dating apps – much to her dismay
As Bridget grapples with her sorrow, she learns profound lessons about the nature of grief and the necessity of moving forward. Encouraged by her ever-supportive friends – Jude (Shirley Henderson), Shazza (Sally Phillips), and Tom (James Callis) – she tentatively re-enters the dating scene.

This journey leads her to a summer romance with the youthful, spirited, and downright ride, Roxster (Leo Woodall), whose zest for life rekindles Bridget’s own sense of adventure and reminds her of the joy that still exists in the world.

Bridget’s exploration into the world of dating apps, f***boys, and avoidant men will be a stark reminder to all the singletons this Valentine’s Day. Bridget’s foray into online dating is nothing short of a tragicomedy, a Shakespearean farce set in the digital age.

Armed with a profile that reads something like “wine enthusiast, chaotic but well-intentioned, not here for ghosting (unless it’s Patrick Swayze),” she bravely swipes through an endless parade of avoidant commitment-phobes, gym bros with alarming protein shake-to-personality ratios, and men whose idea of romance is a “u up?” text at 11:47 PM.

Bridget is navigating her way through grief
Bridget is navigating her way through grief
Every single woman who has ever been in the trenches of dating apps will feel a deep, spiritual kinship with Bridget as she deciphers cryptic Hinge prompts like “I’ll introduce you to my mother when…” (spoiler: never) and dodges emotional unavailability like it’s a national sport.

Watching Bridget endure the modern horrors of “let’s keep it casual” will have audiences howling in recognition – because, let’s face it, nothing says 2025 romance quite like a fella disappearing mid-conversation, only to reappear three months later with a “sorry, been busy.”

Simultaneously, Bridget forms a subtle yet profound connection with her son Billy’s science teacher, Mr. Wallaker (Chiwetel Ejiofor). Through their interactions, she discovers that love can manifest in unexpected ways and that opening one’s heart again does not mean forgetting the past but honoring it by embracing the present.

Throughout the film, Bridget confronts the multifaceted nature of pain. She realizes that while grief is a testament to the depth of her love for Mark, it should not define her existence. By allowing herself to experience new relationships and challenges, she learns that pain can coexist with joy and that healing is a journey, not a destination.

Watching Bridget stumble through life after losing Mark Darcy left me with a raw and painful lump in my throat, a feeling so achingly familiar it almost hurt to sit with it. As she woke up in that too-big bed, as she forced a smile through conversations that felt hollow, as she clung to memories that once felt like a forever but were now just echoes- I saw myself.

Bridget has lost the love of her life, Mark Darcy

    Image:
© 2001 NBCUniversal All Rights Reserved)I saw the version of myself from eight years ago, trying to remember how to exist in a world that had kept on spinning after my mother’s passing, even when my own had come to a screeching halt. The way Bridget carried her grief – sometimes with humor, sometimes with anger, and sometimes like a weight so heavy it seemed impossible to move – was heartbreakingly real. Because that’s the thing about loss: it doesn’t ask if you’re ready. It crashes in, rewrites your story, and leaves you to figure out how to keep going. And somehow, through all the mess, you just do.Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy masterfully balances humor and heartache, offering a narrative that is both relatable and deeply moving. The film serves as a poignant reminder that life, with all its imperfections and trials, is meant to be lived fully. Bridget’s journey teaches us that while loss is an inevitable part of the human experience, it is our capacity to love, to find joy amidst sorrow, and to embrace new beginnings that truly define us.

In this last chapter, Bridget Jones emerges not just as a beloved character but as a symbol of resilience and hope, inspiring us all to find the courage to live and love again, no matter the obstacles we face.

So, this Valentine’s Day, whether you’re content being single, desperate to find love, or in a happy relationship, Bridget is there to remind us to not settle for just anyone – not even Leo Woodall. She’s there to reminds us to only offer out our love to those who appreciate and accept us “just as we are”, as the late great Mark Darcy once sheepishly whispered.

Actress Lesley Joseph has spoken about her Birds of a Feather co-star Pauline Quirke’s dementia diagnosis during an interview on Good Morning Britain on Valentine’s Day

Veteran actress Lesley Joseph has broken her silence on former Birds of a Feather co-star Pauline Quirke’s recent dementia diagnosis.

The comic actress, aged 79, was chatting to Good Morning Britain hosts Robert Rinder and Charlotte Hawkins about her dating advice for single women over the age of fifty when Charlotte asked her about Pauline’s diagnosis.

“I have to say what a wonderful actress she is,” replied Lesley. “And what joy she has given. Not just in Birds of A Feather but in The Sculptress where she was really scary, and in Broadchurch and Emmerdale, I take my hat off to Pauline. She’s amazing.”

“I won’t talk about her at the moment with her illness because that’s private,” she added. “I lived through dementia with my mum, who lived to nearly 104 and in her nineties she was still playing tennis and she was so full of life as she got older, she was an amazing character.”

Pauline’s dementia diagnosis was revealed at the end of January. Her husband Steve Sheen released a statement in which he said: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my wife Pauline’s decision to step back from all professional and commercial duties due to her diagnosis of Dementia in 2021.”

The statement continued: “Pauline has been an inspiration through her work in the film and TV industry, her charity endeavours and as the founder of the very successful Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA). Her talent, dedication, and vision have touched countless lives and will continue to do so through the legacy of her work and through PQA where her vision and guidance has facilitated many young peoples’ progression and interest in the Arts and enhanced their self-confidence.”

Pauline’s family requested privacy, adding: “For the time being we will not be engaging in interviews or making further statements, since Pauline just wants to spend time with her family, children and grandchildren.”

Since the announcement, Pauline’s other Birds of a Feather co-star Linda Robson has opened up about her close friend. In an interview with Express.co.uk, she said: “”I have noticed a real difference with her; she doesn’t remember her grandchildren, so she’s not going to remember who I am even though we’ve been friends 56 years. It really is sad.”

She also shared an Instagram post, saying: “This will be the only time I speak on behalf of my best friend, Pauline. For the past three years, I’ve been in close contact with her husband, Steve, and have spent time with Pauline. It breaks my heart to see her endure such a terrible illness. Out of respect for her family and her privacy, I will not be discussing this matter further.”

Pauline, Linda and Lesley appeared in the BBC sitcom Birds of a Feather from 1989 until 1998, and it was then revived by ITV and new episodes were made between 2014 and 2020. Pauline and Linda played sisters who were brought together when their husbands were sent to prison for armed robbery, while Lesley was their next door neighbour Dorien.

Which outfit of Meghan Markle’s is your favourite? Vote in our poll

Meghan Markle has been showcasing her best winter wardrobe at the Invictus Games, and with so many memorable outfits over the last few years – we want to know which one of your favourite

The Duchess of Sussex opted for a more casual look at the Invictus Games in Canada, with a focus on practicality instead of bold statements, but which outfit of Meghan’s is your favourite?

Throughout the tournament, which supports wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans, Meghan has balanced style with the spirit of the games. During her five days at the event, the Duchess has sported a number of chic styles, including elegant knit jumpers and white snow jackets, as well as navy and olive skirts.

While Meghan exuded elegance with her minimalist winter wardrobe, the former royal is also known for her show-stopping ensembles. High-end designers and mid-range labels often make appearances in her red-carpet and street style, including Givenchy, Dior, Posse, and J.Crew, reports Harper’s Bazaar.

In June 2022, Meghan was commended for her sophisticated outfit choice at the Service of Thanksgiving celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee. She stunned in a Dior haute couture look, featuring a classic cream belted coat, which she paired with a floppy hat and diamond stud earrings.

Last year, the Duchess recycled an eye-catching red Carolina Herrera gown as she turned up for a star-studded night at the LA Children’s Hospital charity gala. Body language expert Judi James described the look as “pure Hollywood” rather than royalty, as she told the Mirror: “The attention-grabbing red dress she wore with Harry has had its regal-looking train removed, leaving a sexy low-cut top and leg-flashing skirt.

Meghan poses with her back arched in it, too, which makes better use of the plunging neckline.” Another iconic moment occurred in 2018 when Meghan stunned in a floor length Fijian blue caped Safiyaa gown at a Fiji state banquet, which she matched with diamonds.

Her outfit, worn with her hair down, was by German-born London-based designer Daniela Karmuts. The Sussexes marked their final royal engagement before stepping down from the Firm at Westminster Abbey for the annual Commonwealth Day Service in 2020, with Meghan looking stunning for this momentous occasion.

The powerful look was down to an emerald green Emilia Wickstead dress, teamed with a matching hat and shoes. Speaking on the Mirror’s podcast Pod Save the Queen, royal expert Christine Ross said: “One of the most iconic looks is going to be her green Emilia Wickstead cape dress.

“That cape blowing in the wind as she walked into the church and then walked out of the church, which was such an emotional moment for so many people as it was their last formal engagement as royals. That green dress will stand out in history books I think.”

While Meghan has made her fashion mark with memorable looks over the years, we want to know which one is your absolute favourite. Take our poll above to have your say or click HERE. Don’t forget to support your preferred style in the comments section below, or let us know which iconic ensemble we may have missed from the list.

The Duchess of Sussex has shared a gushing tribute to her husband, the Duke of Sussex, in honour of Valentine’s Day, complete with an unseen and loved-up snap of the couple kissing

Meghan Markle has shared an affectionate post with an unseen snap of her husband, Prince Harry, in honour of Valentine’s Day.

The Duchess of Sussex, who has only recently returned to Instagram, posted a black and white photo on Friday, which showed the couple sharing a passionate kiss at the dinner table. Meghan, 43, had her hand tentatively placed on the side of Harry’s cheek as they closed their eyes for the rare affectionate moment caught on camera.

For the occasion, Meghan donned a casual strap summer dress with her dark brunette locks in a low ponytail, while Harry, 40, sported a white pole shirt. The Duchess added a touching message with the snap, honouring her husband for his work at the Invictus Games this week and a heartfelt ‘thank you’.

Meghan wrote: “Back home taking care of our babies, and missing my Valentine, as he continues on at the Invictus Games, changing lives and reminding all of us of the power of healing and resilience through these incredible veterans and their families. Beyond proud of my husband and what he’s created.

“My love, I will eat burgers & fries and fish & chips with you forever. Thank you for you. #lovewins.” She ended the post with: “As ever, M.”

The post comes after Meghan left Harry in Canada during the Invictus Games on Tuesday to fly back home to their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilbet. But before her exit, she wore a Valentine’s gift previously given to her by Harry during a secret double date.

As they were unable to spend Valentine’s Day together, they previously dined at the Italian restaurant Il Caminetto in Whistler on 10 February, where they were joined by Michael Bublé and his wife, Luisana Lopilato. The two couples previously dined together at an Indian restaurant in Vancouver on 8 February.

For their night out, Meghan wore a pair of diamond earrings by Maya Brenner that were a gift from Harry for Valentine’s Day last year, according to Town & Country. The Duchess is known to be a fan of the jewellery designer and has several of her designs, including the custom ‘H’ and ‘M’ necklace she wore at the start of her relationship with Harry.

Exclusive: Meghan Markle ‘dominates’ a ‘very shy’ Harry in new unseen photo – with hidden message

The Duchess of Sussex has continued her Instagram posting streak with a heartfelt snap of her and Prince Harry, alongside a very emotional message. One expert says the smitten couple have two very different dynamics in the snap

Meghan Markle has opened up about missing her husband Prince Harry as they spend Valentine’s Day apart.

The Duchess has continued her Instagram posting streak by sharing a romantic unseen snap of her and Harry, where they both share a tender kiss over dinner.

After months of working seperately and not being seen together at events, the couple returned to their famously inseperable approach as they arrived together at in Canada for the Invictus Games last weekend. Fans were treated to five days of major PDA from the Sussexes, who shared a passionate smooch at the opening ceremony and giggled together as they got stuck in at sporting events.

But their amorous display was cut short when Meghan flew back home to sunny Montecito on Tuesday, to be with their children Archie and Lilibet. It is understood that the Duchess had always planned to fly back days before the Games end, while Harry remains in Vancouver until Sunday. It means the Sussexes are spending their Valentine’s Day apart, but keen to not miss out on the romance today brings, Meghan took to Instagram to share a heartfelt tribute to Harry.

Meghan wrote: “Back home taking care of our babies, and missing my Valentine, as he continues on at the Invictus Games, changing lives and reminding all of us of the power of healing and resilience through these incredible veterans and their families. Beyond proud of my husband and what he’s created. My love, I will eat burgers & fries and fish & chips with you forever. Thank you for you. #lovewins.” She ended the post with: “As ever, M.”

It marks a huge change in tact for the former Suits actress, who previously left Instagram, deleting her personal account after getting married. Now she’s back in full force, returning to promote her upcoming Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, last month, but posting behind-the-scenes snippets ever since – including daily Instagram Stories from her time at Invictus.

And body language expert Judi James says Meghan’s new loved-up snap shows just how smitten the pair are. It comes after the Duke was forced to shut down divorce rumours late last year, following a long stint where the couple had not been seen together in public.

Judi tells The Mirror: “This adorable pose seems to show how smitten Harry is with Meghan and how more dominant she can be in response. Firstly, Harry has left his meal to wait to accept a kiss from his wife, which is serious stuff for most guys. Then he has his hands and lower arms crossed in his lap, between his legs, which is a classic signals of coyness.”

World’s away from the ‘flustered’ and ‘uncomfortable’ Harry that we saw during the couple’s Colombia tour last summer, the new snap suggests that Meghan brings out his ‘shy teenage’ side, according to the expert. “That rather cute look is emphasized as his cheeks are raised and fully rounded in a smile as he is kissed by Meghan, making him look rather like a shy teenager,” she says. “It’s Meghan holding his face in place for this kiss, which seems to give a more dominant but loving look.”

On Meghan’s heartfelt message, Judi says: “Her words are aimed at ‘stroking’ Harry with praise to the rest of the world, but they end on a more personal note about the duration of their enduring love story.”

But it’s not all chocolates and roses, as the expert believes there might be a hidden strategy at play too. Judi notes: “It’s also interesting to see that, coinciding with her new food series, Meghan’s love language here is emphatically food-based. She name-checks the simple everyday meals they will be sharing through life, with some tempting looking platefuls in front of them looking like clickbait for her upcoming Netflix series.”

In the snap, Meghan and Harry appear to be halfway through a romantic meal when they pause to share their kiss. A glass of wine next to her plate is nearly empty, and her plate shows what appears to be a half-eaten burger. Harry looks to be tucking into some fish and chips.

Meghan’s new Netflix cooking show was initially due to air on 15 January, but after terrifying wildfires ravaged the her hometown of LA – she postponed the release. It comes as insiders who have seen the new show have claimed that Meghan doesn’t actually cook in the series. The eight-part show, which starts on March 4, is understood to be more about hosting and offering inspiration to those wanting to woe friends and family. Harry is also reportedly not in the series.

MailOnline have contacted Gino’s representative for comment.

An investigation by ITV News found ‘dozens’ of allegations of misconduct against the chef on TV shows he worked on, with his behaviour described as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘distressing’ by those making accusations, according to the broadcaster.

According to ITV News, at least one production company was aware of repeated complaints from staff members about Gino’s behaviour – yet continued to work with him on further TV projects.

On Friday, ITV pulled all of Gino’s shows from its upcoming schedules, MailOnline revealed.

One woman, given the pseudonym Hannah, described a disturbing moment during a magazine shoot in 2011.

She claims that, in front of an entire crew, Gino made an explicit sexual comment, telling her he would ‘like to turn me over and f*** me up the a*** against the kitchen counter,’ leaving her humiliated.

‘I remember a ripple of laughter,’ she recalled, while others ‘looked nervously into their cups of tea’.

Hannah said the incident left her feeling ‘horror’ and ‘shock’ but admitted she was not surprised no one intervened.

Gino has firmly denied all allegations, calling them ‘deeply upsetting’.

His legal team said: ‘This allegation from almost 15 years ago has never, until now via a media request, been raised or put to Mr D’Acampo. He does not recall it, nor accept that it happened.’

Another woman, given the pseudonym Natalie, recounted an unsettling experience while briefing Gino for a location shoot.

‘He opened the door in his boxer shorts, nothing else,’ she claimed.

‘Then he jumped on the bed, put his leg up and made a crude reference to his private parts, joking about their size.’

Natalie described feeling ‘disgusted’ and accused the TV chef of using his position to behave inappropriately.

Gino’s legal team strongly refuted this version of events, stating: ‘To his knowledge, no such allegations have been made against him in relation to ‘Gino’s Italian Express’.

‘This is the first time – six years later – that he has been informed of these alleged incidents, which he categorically denies.’

In yet another claim, a former colleague alleged that in 2019, Gino aggressively confronted a young crew member over an ice cream.

Another crew member who witnessed the incident said the remark had ‘stuck in my head for years’.

One woman who worked on Gino’s Italian Express told ITV News: ‘His ‘cheeky chappy’ persona allows him to hide in plain sight. If I see him on TV, I have to leave the room.’

Gino, who has built a multi-million-pound career on his larger-than-life personality, has denied all allegations against him.

His legal team said: ‘No-one has ever made these complaints directly to Mr D’Acampo. He does not recall making these comments, nor does he accept that they were made.’

ITV News has seen emails from December 2024 reportedly confirming concerns were raised with Objective Media Group over Gino’s behaviour.

In response, the company admitted that he was ‘spoken to’ about his off-screen conduct and ‘bespoke training’ was provided.

A separate statement from ITV stressed: ‘We can categorically confirm that this kind of behaviour is not tolerated by ITV.’

With ITV and production companies now facing questions about how they handled past complaints, the future of Gino’s TV career remains uncertain.

Responding to the allegations, in a statement to ITV News, Gino D’Acampo said: ‘I have been told by ITN news that allegations have been made about me acting inappropriately, some dating back over ten years ago.

‘I have never been made aware of these matters previously and the allegations are firmly denied. I would not do anything that I thought would upset or distress anyone. This is simply not in my nature. I do not recognise the version of events being put to me.

‘Not only have these allegations never been raised with me before, I have been repeatedly supported by executives at the highest level and was commissioned on prime-time programmes during the period in which it is now suggested I was acting inappropriately.

‘I am a father, husband and have worked with well over 1,500 people on around 80 productions in my career, which I have been so proud of. I take such matters extremely seriously and the suggestion that I have acted in an improper way against is deeply upsetting.’

GINO’S HOLLY S3X SLURS Gino D’Acampo scandal deepens as it’s REVEALED he made ‘VIL3’ s3x slurs about Holly Willoughby – but ITV ‘IGNORED’ it

SCANDAL-HIT telly chef Gino D’Acampo made “vil3” s3xual remarks about Holly Willoughby to a horrified woman — but her complaints to ITV were ignored.

She said there was no probe into her 2018 claims about “vulg@r cretin” Gino.

The telly chef is said to have told the woman that he was often asked which of Holly and Fearne Cotton he would most like to sleep with.

He told her: “If I could put the face of one on the body of the other then maybe, but I’d probably choose Holly because I’d have more fun with her.”

The woman said: “I was disgusted by what he said and how he behaved. He was crude and vil3. He’s a vulg@r cretin.”

She warned ITV about him as long ago as 2018.

In an email to chief executive Carolyn McCall, she wrote: “He is certainly not a man reflecting integrity or honesty or family values.

“One day he will be outed by many, many more and his associations will be running for the hills to disassociate themselves with him.”

The woman added: “I have a voice and if I can help stop this happening to others, I will.”

She also contacted This Morning, Channel 5, the BBC and other production companies involved with him.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, said: “Both ITV and the BBC came back sharply, essentially telling me to go away. It hadn’t happened during the production of any show, therefore it didn’t matter.

“ITV were specifically horrid and even cast doubt on what I was saying. They were cowardly.

“I haven’t watched TV since the pandemic because I didn’t want to see his face on TV.

“He was given a platform by TV executives who knew and were warned about his behaviour towards women.”

Investigations have now uncovered dozens of allegations against the married dad of three.

ITV has pulled all of his shows but is under growing pressure to explain what they knew, when they knew it and why no action was taken sooner.

Gino, 48, has “firmly denied” the allegations.

Channel 5 said it had been contacted in 2018 about an allegation “that did not relate to conduct on a Channel 5 production or programme”.

The BBC said it could not locate the woman’s complaint.

    ITV declined to comment.

ITV Loose Women star details health scare after being rushed to hospital

The Loose Women favourite has spoken out about a terrifying health scare after she collapsed at home

Loose Women favourite Andrea McLean has bravely spoken out about a harrowing health ordeal that led to her being rushed to hospital after she collapsed at home.

The 54-year-old, who bid farewell to the ITV chat show in 2020, disclosed that she was battling flu-like symptoms last December when her condition dramatically deteriorated.

In a candid post on her blog, Andrea recounted how she initially brushed off her sickness as just another seasonal lurgy, expecting it to clear up within a week.

But after a week of unyielding fever, shivers, and chest discomfort, she spotted an alarming clue her urine had turned a dark shade of brown.

Her situation escalated when she fainted in her bathroom and remained on the floor for an hour until her husband Nick Feeney discovered her, reports the Express.

Heeding their GP’s urgent advice, Andrea and Nick dialled 999, and paramedics swiftly made their way to their residence. She recounted: “The ambulance team were amazing. My blood pressure was so low I couldn’t stand, and I was in a lot of pain. To be honest, I was barely aware of what was happening.”

Upon reaching the hospital, Andrea underwent a series of tests, including X-rays and CT scans, which exposed the gravity of her illness. She was struck with a diagnosis of severe pneumonia, acute kidney injury, and sepsis a trio of potentially fatal conditions that demanded immediate medical intervention.

“Things happened quickly; drips, super-strong antibiotics via IV and orally, and I was transferred to the Emergency Assessment Ward,” she detailed.

The TV host endured a harrowing few days in hospital, which she described as a “fraught” ordeal. She detailed the sensory assault from the distressing sounds of fellow patients, sleep-deprived nights, and the relentless agony she suffered.

Her initial night in the respiratory ward was particularly harrowing. Andrea found herself in a bay with elderly patients, some battling dementia, and recounted a terrifying incident where one woman aggressively accosted her at night, tugging fiercely at the privacy curtain.

She was eventually prescribed stronger painkillers, which brought some solace. Desperate for a more tranquil recovery space, she fought to be allowed home.

After discussions with medical staff, she secured permission to spend nights at home, while still attending the hospital daily for IV antibiotics and check-ups.

Reflecting on the experience, Andrea is profoundly thankful for her husband’s steadfast support. She shared: “Nick’s life stopped for the first few weeks of the new year too. He drove me to hospital every day, sat outside for hours, then drove me home, made dinner, and put me to bed. And then did it all again the next day.”

Five weeks into her recovery, Andrea has confessed she’s still on the mend and regaining her strength. Although the TV star hoped she’d bounce back swiftly, a joyful chuckle with Nick brought home just how far she’s come.

She remarked: “We both looked at each other, shocked at the realisation that it was the first time I’d belly laughed for weeks.”

ITV Loose Women’s Andrea McLean posts update after horror hospital ordeal

Andrea McLean, 55, was diagnosed with acute kidney injury, sepsis and severe pneumonia after brushing off her symptoms as just flu

Andrea McLean has issued a heartfelt message to fans following her life-threatening health ordeal. The Loose Women star, 55, was suffering from severe flu-like symptoms before she collapsed in the bathroom last December.

After being rushed to hospital, doctors revealed that she not only had acute kidney injury and sepsis, but severe pneumonia too, having lost ‘80% capacity’ in one lung. She stayed here for several days, describing the experience as a ‘sensory overload’ with bright lights, screams, shouting and the ‘smell of poo’ almost constant. Now, Andrea is back at home, opening up about her diagnosis and recovery journey in a candid Substack blog on Sunday. Although life isn’t quite ‘back to normal’ yet, she expressed gratitude for the well-wishes she received and shared a selfie on Instagram.

“Just wanted to say thank you for being so nice,” she said to her 300,000 followers, before adding: “This photo was taken 60 seconds ago. I didn’t realise my hair looks so crazy and my chin gets so red when I rest it on my hand.”

Unsurprisingly, her snap was soon flooded with even more supportive messages, including one from TV show host, Lisa Snowdon. She wrote: “Huge love & hugs darling.”

Meanwhile, another user penned: “So sorry to read how poorly you have been and your adventurous stay in hospital. Wishing you a full recovery very soon,” as someone else commented: “Get well soon. Sounds awful. Sending love and best wishes.”

Beyond her diagnosis, the star was also left ‘terrified’ by the behaviour of other patients in her ward including six women who appeared to have dementia. A few of whom were incredibly distressed by her presence, with one demanding to know why Andrea was there and repeatedly yanking on her ‘flimsy’ bed curtain.

She struggled to sleep at all in this ward and even asked hospital staff if she could continue treatment at home. While there was some pushback on this, medics eventually said she could go there to sleep but must return every day for drips, tests and medication.

“It’s now February, and I’m still not well enough to handle normal stuff like getting up and rushing out the door to do the jobs I’d been booked to do,” Andrea wrote in her blog. “…because every part of that process would end with me falling down, or at the very least sitting on a tube station floor feeling very unwell and embarrassed at the stares.

“I’m still having ‘funny turns’ while out for a walk, or attempting the mildest of exercise. It means I haven’t really started 2025 yet.”

“He treated crew like garbage, he didn’t care. He’s reduced many people to tears over the years.”
