Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s purchase of a home in Portugal is ‘extremely significant’ because it gives them a ‘base near Britain’ and could lead to faux royal tours of European countries, a royal expert has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who were evicted from their cottage in Windsor by King Charles last year, have ensured that they retain a foothold on this side of the Atlantic by buying a home in Alentejo, the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden reported.

They are not the only royals who have a Portuguese property, with the Prince’s cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, owning a home in Melides, south of Lisbon.

Their decision to purchase a home near Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson‘s daughter highlights the two cousins’ close bond and ‘means we may see a good deal of Harry, Meghan and their family’, according to commentator Richard Fitzwilliams.

Speaking to FEMAIL, Mr Fitzwilliams said ‘it emphasises that they still have goodwill’ in The Firm and ‘makes clear that they are connected closely to part of the Royal Family and it will be interesting to see how they intend to develop this.’

Commenting on the couple’s reported Portuguese purchase, Mr Fitzwilliams said: ‘This is a surprise and is extremely significant. We have known that Harry and Meghan and Eugenie and her husband Jack have been close for years.

‘They moved into Frogmore Cottage when the Sussexes vacated it and have reportedly seen each other in California and in Portugal, where Jack works.

‘This proves they are close and it also gives the Sussexes a base in the EU with the possibility of acquiring the Golden Visa which would give them free access to the EU’s Schengen area. This also gives them a base near Britain.

‘It makes clear that they are connected closely to part of the royal family and it will be interesting to see how they intend to develop this.’

The expert continued: ‘Will it, for example, lead to more solo or perhaps even joint visits to Britain, but without participating in royal life or royal rituals at Sandringham and Balmoral?

‘It might lead to a “faux royal” tour of an EU country following their trips to Nigeria and Colombia.

‘It will certainly involve their children and we may see photos of Archie and Lili, in the future, possibly the distant future, we may well see them with Eugenie and Jack and their family. This move obviously advertises that the couples are close.

‘Now we know that Harry and Meghan have a base in Europe, their exile in California is far less distant.

Mr Brooksbank, 38, works in marketing and sales for CostaTerra. He, Eugenie, 34, and their two sons, August, three, and Ernest, 16 months, split their time between Portugal and London.

The Sussexes are known to be close to Eugenie and Mr Brooksbank, and the princess was the only member of the royal family to feature in the couple’s Netflix documentary.

In one sweet snap shared in the second episode, Harry and Eugenie enjoy a bike ride along a palm tree-lined stretch of pavement in California – after she became the first member of The Firm to publicly visit the Duke in the States.

The programme also featured previously unseen photographs of Harry and his wife Meghan partying with Eugenie and Jack on Halloween.

Meghan previously revealed on the Ellen DeGeneres show how she and the Duke hit the town incognito in Halloween costumes with his cousin and her partner for a final night out before their relationship was revealed.

‘He came to see me in Toronto and our friends and his cousin Eugenie and now her husband Jack, they came as well, and the four of us snuck out in Halloween costumes to just have one fun night on the town before it was out in the world that we were a couple,’ she recalled.

‘It was a post-apocalypse theme, so we had all this very bizarre costuming on, and we were able to just have one fun final night out.’

In 2021, Eugenie shared a 40th birthday message to ‘dear Meghan’ and revealed she was supporting the Duchess’ new 40×40 campaign by offering her services as a mentor to help women get back into work.

The underlying message was clear: the bond between Prince Harry and his cousin is as close as ever.

Harry and Eugenie grew up playing together in royal parks and frolicking on the slopes on family ski holidays. Although their older siblings Prince William and Princess Beatrice were there too, it was always clear the relationship between Harry and Eugenie was special.

Their connection is rooted not only in their shared experience as young royals and younger siblings finding their own path in life, but also as children of parents whose dirty laundry was aired in the press.

‘From an early age, Eugenie had to deal with the embarrassing headlines of both her father and mother,’ explained Nigel Crawthorne, author of Prince Andrew. ‘Harry had to deal with his share of headlines, too, and this bond between them was a great consolation for them.’

Over the years, Eugenie has been Harry’s close friend, confidante, and even matchmaker. Now she is seen as one of his closest allies within the royal family.

Despite being born five years apart, Harry and Eugenie often spent time together as children thanks to the friendship between their mothers Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson, who would pack up the children for joint family holidays.

The cousins also bonded over their shared difficulty of carving a role for themselves within the royal family, with Eugenie, who is not a working royal, having to seek out her own career path.

Harry has always confided in Eugenie and she was reportedly among the first to know about his relationship with Meghan, whom she already knew through their mutual friend Misha Nonoo.

‘Not only did he trust her implicitly, but friends said that she gives great advice and has always been ‘beyond wise’ for her years,’ Scobie and Durant wrote.

Eugenie and Jack, who married in October 2018, just six months after Harry and Meghan, went on double dates with the couple in Toronto and London.

The Princess and her then boyfriend were at a party in Soho House in Toronto in 2016 when Harry and the Suits star were first seen together. Eugenie was instrumental in keeping their relationship secret.

In the explosive tell-all Oprah Winfrey interview, in which Harry and Meghan criticised the Royal Family, Eugenie was singled out for praise.

Meghan said: ‘Eugenie and I had known each other before I had known Harry, so that was comfortable […] We’re friends with them as a couple.’

The Sussexes, Eugenie and Jack were all guests at Misha Nonoo’s lavish Rome wedding in the summer of 2019.

They also have mutual friends in singer Ellie Goulding and George and Amal Clooney, who were guests at Harry and Meghan’s nuptials.

Harry and Eugenie’s relationship came under strain in 2018 when he and Meghan reportedly told senior royals they were expecting their first child together at Eugenie and Jack’s wedding.

The official announcement came just days later, eclipsing any lingering coverage of Eugenie’s big day.

However it would seem any bad blood between the cousins was soon washed away.

In a sign of how close they are, after Harry and Meghan moved to North America and quit royal duties in 2020, Frogmore Cottage was leased to Eugenie and Mr Brooksbank until 2022.

For the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip and the unveiling of the Princess Diana statue, Harry chose to stay with Eugenie at Frogmore Cottage.

Meghan also referred to the Duchess of York as ‘Fergie’ during her tell-all Oprah interview, hinting at a friendship that would have surprised many viewers.

Despite there being five years between Harry and his younger cousin, they married and had children at the same time.

Meghan and Eugenie reportedly bonded over motherhood and pregnancy and have taken similar approaches to presenting their children on social media – choosing to have photoshoots in the garden but obscuring the little ones’ faces.

Eugenie is also keen to show her public support for the Sussexes, previously dedicating an Instagram post to congratulating them on the arrival of daughter Lilibet.

A lip reader claimed that Harry even moaned he was ‘fed up with the way they treat me’ as he chatted to Jack.

It was not clear who was the target of his ‘fed up’ complaint, although there has been speculation he could have been speaking about the Royal Family, following ongoing tensions over his decision to quit as a working royal and publish a highly critical memoir.

Speaking of his friendship with Jack in the aforementioned book, Harry said that he and Meghan were ‘deliriously happy’ when he and Eugenie got married – adding ‘and for ourselves, selfishly, since Jack was one of our favourite people’.

In 2023, a source told People magazine: ‘[Harry and Eugenie] are still the best of friends and talk constantly’.

They added that the tensions between Harry, Meghan and the Firm has been ‘really stressful’ for Beatrice and Eugenie, and they find it ‘hard to watch’ because they ‘see both sides’.

Last year, it was reported that the Sussexes enjoyed a ‘romantic three-night break’ in Portugal after attending the Invictus Games in Germany.

The couple are said to have flown from Dusseldorf to Lisbon before travelling an hour south to Melides in a ‘mega-secret’ operation.

A source close to the Sussexes confirmed that they had been to Portugal. At the time, it was thought that they stayed with Eugenie and Mr Brooksbank, who have visited them at their home in Montecito, California.

Jose Santos, head of the Alentejo Tourism Board, confirmed that the Sussexes had enjoyed a ‘short stay’ at the CostaTerra.

‘We have no idea how many people linked to cinema, royalty, arts, design and fashion visit us, precisely because they value discreet travel, which is something they find in Alentejo like nowhere else in Europe,’ he said.

CostaTerra Golf is owned by a company founded by Mike Meldman, one of George Clooney’s business partners in tequila firm Casamigos. Mr Brooksbank previously worked as a brand ambassador for Casamigos.

It’s perhaps unsurprising that Meghan seemingly enjoyed her visit to Portugal enough to then purchase property there, considering she once mentioned her longing to visit ‘lovely Lisbon’.

A resurfaced blog post from Meghan’s now-defunct lifestyle website The Tig reads: ‘Lovely Lisbon has long been on my list of places to travel (alliteration much?) – the wines and madeira, the history and culture rounding every cobblestone turn, not to mention the beaches, Baroque architecture, and the applause worthy sunsets.’

The purchase of the home in Portugal may have also allowed the Sussexes to acquire a so-called Golden Visa, under which they would have visa-free access to the European Union’s Schengen area.

This could have been a major attraction to Meghan, who is a US citizen. When the couple got engaged in November 2017, Kensington Palace said Meghan would apply for British citizenship in due course, with a spokesman confirming that ‘she will go through the process [which] takes a number of years’.

However, she eventually abandoned her bid to become a British citizen after she and her husband left the country in March 2020, less than two years after their wedding.

A spokesman for the Sussexes confirmed in January last year that they had been asked by the King to give up their British home, Frogmore Cottage.

The five-bedroom property in the grounds of Windsor Castle was offered to Prince Andrew, the King’s brother, who rejected a move from the much larger Royal Lodge elsewhere at Windsor.

The King’s move followed the publication of Harry’s highly controversial memoir, Spare, in which he criticised members of the Royal Family including his stepmother, Queen Camilla, and his brother and sister-in-law, the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Frogmore Cottage was given to the Sussexes by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2018, shortly after the couple were married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. Officially, however, the Crown Estate owns the property.

Harry and Meghan carried out some £2million worth of taxpayer-funded renovations, though they subsequently repaid the cost in full through a contribution to the Sovereign Grant.

After Harry and Meghan moved to North America and quit royal duties in 2020, Frogmore Cottage was leased to Eugenie and Mr Brooksbank until 2022.

The Sussexes’ main home is a £19.5 million Tuscan-style mansion in Montecito with seven bedrooms, 13 and a half bathrooms, library, cinema, gym, pool and chicken coop.

He’s still waiting for that knighthood – despite years of good works and lending his support to the Royal Family. He even queued with the masses for nearly 12 hours to see the late Queen lying in state in Westminster Hall in September 2022.

But David Beckham is about to receive a significant honour in the form of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. There are six categories: motion pictures, TV, audio recording or music, radio, theatre or live performance, and sports entertainment.

They allow around 20 to be honoured every year, but if you are selected then you have to stump up $75,000 for installation and maintenance. A spokesman for the scheme declines to comment on who paid.

Life, death and a ‘gift’ of a role for Moore 

Julianne Moore had been ‘praying’ that Spanish director Pedro Almodovar would make a film in English so she could act in it – and her dreams finally came true with The Room Next Door.

Speaking in London over the weekend she said: ‘Like every English-speaking actress in the entire world, we have all prayed that someday Pedro would make a film in the English language and you might possibly be cast.

‘For me I never imagined it would be possible. Then one day I opened up my email and there was one from Pedro saying: ‘I am making this film with Tilda [Swinton, her co-star] and would you like to be involved?’

‘It came completely out of the blue and was a tremendous gift.’ The film, which has at its core the debate over assisted dying, stars Tilda as a war journalist who is terminally ill. She reconnects with an old friend, played by Moore, whose help she asks for in taking charge of her impending demise. It’s in cinemas from today.

The Mitford sisters – society It-girls of the 1930s – are presented as ‘six Fleabags’ in a big-budget period drama, Outrageous.

Producer Liz Kilgarriff, of Firebird Pictures, says: ‘We talked about it as sort of six Fleabags [after Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s TV comedy]. There’s something fascinating about six women who all refuse to do what they are supposed to, which is marry well and bring money into the family. It’s the rebellion.’

Earlier this month a local property source claimed that the Beckhams’ offer on the property had been accepted, and they plan to move in early next year.

The Beckhams have had a base in Florida for years, and also spent about £18million on a full-floor five-bedroom penthouse in downtown Miami in 2020.

The couple already have a property portfolio which includes a £31million townhouse in London’s Holland Park and a £12million Cotswolds country pile.

Long-time celebrity columnist Jose Lambiet told the Mail earlier this month: ‘I don’t think people necessarily remember that David Beckham was a football player.

‘They now think of him as a society guy, and the ownership of the soccer team has made him a stalwart in South Florida.

‘Miami is a place where he and Victoria can be comfortable because people are used to famous faces here – there are hundreds of celebrities.’

It is understood that the whole Beckham family had already been to see the property before the latest visit by Beckham, with a source saying that ‘everyone loves it’.

They added: ‘Although it’s David who has the work connection in Miami, the impression from the estate agents is that Victoria has been pushing for the move.

While Jackie didn’t reveal the details of her surgery she revealed that earlier this year the debilitating surgery meant she could barely stand.

Reflecting on her recovery she penned: ‘Random thought. Wild to think 3 months ago I was relearning to walk and couldn’t get up.

‘Physically and mentally I had a hard time, took forever to be ok with myself again especially work and writing wise.’

Pausing for a moment of gratitude she continued: ‘Our bodies are awesome and capable of so much. Take a moment to be grateful for ur support systems, own willpower and strength, whatever ur going through.

‘We all know it’s ok not to be ok all the time and hope everyone is taking care of themselves as much as possible/taking moments to focus on mental and physical health.’

Jackie and Victoria appear to be getting on well, with the Brazilian showing a remarkable resemblance to the Spice Girl on numerous occasions.

The youngest son of David and Victoria Beckham, brought Jackie, to Florida on Saturday to watch Inter Miami play the New England Revolution at the Chase Stadium.

Cruz was spotted sitting alongside Jackie in the suite at the stadium as they sweetly held hands throughout the match.

In other snaps the couple were seen cosying up together, with Jackie wrapping her arm around her beau’s neck.

According to HELLO!, the brunette beauty is almost a decade older than Cruz, who turns 20 in February.

They wrote: ‘[Jackie] was formerly a member of Brazilian girl band Schutz, [and] is nine years her boyfriend’s senior.

Bets were made on about which tiara the newly minted Princess of Wales might wear: would she choose her favourite, Cambridge Lover’s Knot? Or go for something even more regal and rare?

Would Princess Beatrice wear her great great grandmother, Queen Mary‘s 1919 Fringe Tiara that she wore for her wedding in July 2020, worn by her grandmother at her wedding in 1947? Would her sister, Eugenie, wear her bridal Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara.

What would the Princess Royal wear to the Coronation of her brother? After all, her aunt wore the Cartier Halo Tiara to her sister’s 1953 enthroning – which Kate famously wore in the Abbey in 2011. And the Royal Duchesses of Edinburgh, Gloucester, Kent and so forth? We haven’t even touched on the foreign Royals; – in 1953, Princess Märtha of Sweden wore Empress Joséphine’s Emerald Tiara – would Crown Princess Victoria follow suit? And Princess Mary? Of course, in the end it was a collective ‘Oooh’, almost louder than the rain on Westminster’s Abbey roof. Kate wore, an albeit beautiful, costume jewellery floral headpiece alongside Princess Charlotte – and the rest of the guests were in hats or fascinators. Of course there were some spectacular jewels.

The King was carefully considerate in the Dress Code for his Coronation – after all, very few of the previous peers and peeresses were invited – many of whom no longer have the ‘family fender’ (as my ancestor the 6th Marchioness of Londonderry called it – see below); they have either have sold them (you can still buy the exquisite Anglesey Tiara from Hancock’s on St James’s Street, London) or had them broken up and made into jewellery more wearable today. Some, such as the Portland Tiara, have been stolen. State Banquets still ring for diamond diadems, and Kate delighted us all when in November 2023 she wore the Queen Mother‘s Strathmore Tiara for the visit of the President of South Korea – and the national papers – who put the tiara, unseen for over a century, firmly on the front page.

 Tiaras hark from a bygone world – a world that so many Royals have covered in dust sheets

 Let’s look at their history to understand why, in the 21st century, they still have the power to impress.

Napoleon Bonaparte might have been Europe’s enemy number one at the turn of the 19th Century, but he did succeed in reintroducing the bejewelled head ornament, which became de rigeur throughout the continent.

Until he decided to dress up his family – and particularly his wife, later Empress, Josephine – in diamond diadems, these exquisite head ornaments had been almost non-existent since Ancient Greece and Rome. Napoleon wanted to revive the pomp and ceremony of the Ancient World – to which he looked for inspiration; in emblems, iconography and his family’s fashions. in Napoleon’s eye, with no crown jewels, tiaras transformed the Bonapartes into bona fide royals.

It’s important to note that despite Le Petit Corporal taking the credit for tiaras, there are sketches of a young Queen Charlotte wearing diamonds set in diadems during the 1760s. And the spectacular Spencer Tiara, famously worn by Lady Diana Spencer during her 1981 wedding, was in fact created in 1767 for an ancestor, Viscountess Montagu. The tiara’s undulating diamond set scroll work, meeting in the middle as a heart, was replicated in the early twentieth century when, in the 1930s, Garrard reset some of the diamonds.

It is Queen Charlotte’s granddaughter, and namesake, Princess Charlotte, who is to thank for the tradition of adding a tiara to the bridal trousseau – up until then, it was strictly married women who wore them. For Princess Charlotte of Wales’s marriage in 1816, she wore a tiara set with brilliant diamonds to secure her veil. And at the coronation of her father George IV, for whom the inimitable Diamond Diadem was created for the occasion, ‘coronets, tiaras, circlets, aigrettes’ were worn throughout the Abbey. Quickly the British Court cottoned on and the tiara became a status symbol, an investment and part of a ‘uniform’, that married women of the aristocracy were expected to wear to formal occasions, from generation to generation.

Guy Burton of Hancock’s, where the magnificent Anglesey tiara, that belonged to the eponymous dancing Marquess, is available to buy, describes it as “a truly magnificent piece and, needless to say, jewellery of this provenance and story rarely appears on the open market.”

Tiaras during the reign of Queen Victoria were substantial sparklers. The young monarch turned her aunt Queen Adelaide’s diamond fringe necklace into a tiara.

When my paternal grandmother’s ancestor, Theresa, married the 6th Marquess of Londonderry, she inherited some spectacular pieces – and called them ‘the family fenders’. Many of the Londonderry Jewels are now on permanent loan to the V&A, and are perfect examples of their formidability.

The Londonderry Tiara was commissioned in 1854 from Garrard and set with existing diamonds belonging to the family, including those taken from a belt worn to the Coronation of George IV.

 In the 1880s my ancestor Theresa (née Chetwynd-Talbot – daughter of the 19th Earl of Shrewsbury), a formidable hostess, was photographed in a series where she is wearing the tiara – she also wore it as part of her costume at the Devonshire House Ball in 1897. At the Coronation of Edward VII she wore this tiara with enormous baroque pearls attached to the top (it is said that she wanted to stand higher than Queen Alexandra). It became so top heavy that when she needed to visit the loo in the Abbey, the half-a-century-old tiara toppled off her imposing head into the loo. She wasn’t called a ‘highwaywoman in a tiara’ for nothing.

Helen Molesworth, jewellery curator of the V&A whose book PRECIOUS was published in the summer, says: ‘They form a fascinating record of jewellery history. From the stately crown-like creations in heavier gold and silver settings of the nineteenth century, to the lighter platinum aigrettes and bandeaus of the early 1900s.’ The latter of which suited the dramatic haircuts of the era.

 Who can forget Lady Mary Crawley appearing with a slick bob in season five of Downton, and causing such a sensation? Tiaras had to adapt to fit this new trend – and so the bandeau appeared. The Strathmore Tiara, when worn by Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, was worn low on her forehead, whereas when the Princess of Wales wore it last year, she wore it above her hairline as is traditional these days.

 Will there every be an era when the tiara is out of fashion? I for one hope not!

Sharing a picture of Jackie waiting to blow out her candles to his Instagram Story, he dropped the ‘L bomb’, as he penned: Happy Birthday xx I love you’.

The confession comes just days after the pair packed on the PDA during a shopping trip in Beverly Hills last week.

Despite a ten-year age gap, Cruz showed that their romance was stronger than ever as they passionately kissed in the street.

According to HELLO!, the brunette beauty is almost a decade older than Cruz, who turns 20 in February.

They wrote: ‘[Jackie] was formerly a member of Brazilian girl band Schutz, [and] is nine years her boyfriend’s senior.

‘In an Instagram post introducing the members of Schutz shared to Instagram in 2022, Jackie is introduced as being 26 years old, making her 28 now. The star will turn 29 on 18 October’.

And it seems love is in the air for the Beckham brood after Cruz’s brother Romeo finally confirmed that he was dating photographer Gray Sorrenti, with a loved-up outing in NYC.

Gray is also from a famous family and daughter of fellow fashion photographer  Mario Sorrenti, 52, who’s best known for shooting Kate Moss‘ iconic Calvin Klein Obsession ads back in the 90s.

Romeo has been linked to several women in recent weeks after emerging back on the dating scene, and was first spotted with Gray amid Paris Fashion Week last month.

Just days earlier, Romeo was pictured sneaking out of a boozy Fashion Week party in London with Amelia Gray Hamlin – the daughter of US TV star Lisa Rinna and actor Harry Hamlin – the daughter of US TV star Lisa Rinna and actor Harry Hamlin.

Charles was judged too harshly when Princess Diana died, actor Dominic West, who played him in The Crown, has claimed.

The star, 54, who took the role of the Prince of Wales in the final two series of the Netflix show, believes that history should be kinder to the now King, who he believes has ‘made every mistake going’.

Mr West, previously most famous for his role as Jimmy McNulty in The Wire, believes Charles was seen as a ‘villain’ after his ex-wife died with Dodi Fayed on the night of August 30.

He said: ‘I adore him. I feel real affection for him’.

In season six, which premiered last month with the final episodes released last week, Charles crumbles into tears when he learns of his ex-wife’s death in Paris.  He then defied his mother and pushed for the royal plane to be sent to France to collect her coffin, sobbing loudly when he saw her body for the first time at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital.

Mr West said: ‘You do feel a sympathy for him. I think that, particularly around Diana’s death, he was the villain of the piece. And I think perhaps now that we’ve had 25 years of retrospective to look back on, we might judge that — I certainly have judged that — as being a bit harsh on him’.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, West said: ‘I’m fighting for him as one does as an actor for any character, except perhaps the most villainous. Inevitably, you’re trying to get inside the mind of your character and that requires a sort of sense of common humanity and empathy’.

He said he has grown to ‘adore’ playing Charles in the show, admitting he is sad that the role has ended.

In an interview with Town and Country he said: ‘I miss him. I’m still reading all the news articles about him. I adore him. I feel real affection for him, which I didn’t particularly feel before’, adding: ‘He’s likable, as well as an interesting character’.

He referenced recent events, such as Charles’ anger when his pen failed to work after the Queen died.

‘It’s hard not to bring the present man into the historic man, or even the real man into Peter Morgan’s version of him. But it was a wonderful gift to have all that coronation stuff and the pen—the irritation about the pen. You don’t get many glimpses of what’s going on behind the public persona. So I greedily devoured all those moments. They are gold dust to an actor, really’.

He added: ‘He’s made every mistake going. He’s been through it all, it’s been about as bad as it can get. And he’s been grilled about as hard as he possibly could be. And so I imagine, like with so much in his life, I think there’s a certain resolution now he’s King. I think there’s a certain, probably relief, that he no longer is allowed to be political or outspoken’.

He added: ‘He’s landed on his feet—or with a crown on his head, more accurately’.

The last series of The Crown has proved controversial and had mixed reviews, from the depiction of Diana’s death to Charles’ wedding to Camilla and the Queen’s existential crisis over the future of the monarchy.

But in this case, the prince’s closeness to the streaming service appears to have paid off. Harry, who has a reported £80million production deal with Netflix, has notably shied away from criticising the series’ increasingly cartoonish plotlines.

The on-screen portrayal of his Nazi debacle appears to stay close to his own recollection of the incident in his memoir, Spare. In the book, Harry took little in the way of responsibility for his actions, effectively blaming Prince William and his then-girlfriend Kate, for egging him on.

‘Oh, come on. Wearing the outfit doesn’t make him a Nazi. Isn’t that the joke?’ he adds. In the mirror, a gleeful Harry, then aged 20, does the ‘Heil Hitler’ salute as he makes his choice.

At the party, hosted by Olympic showjumper Richard Meade, Harry is photographed by two shocked guests who sell the pictures to The Sun.

The Royal Family are then shown examining the front pages in horror, while the young prince shouts obscenities as he realises his mistake. In a later scene, the two brothers row over the scandal at supper with their father.

‘You were all for the uniform, egging me on,’ Harry hit out. ‘Suddenly you’re Mr Morality. Stabbing me in the back… how many faces does this man have?’ William then says: ‘I’m not sure I like who you’re turning into.’

‘Not sure I like who you’ve been,’ Harry angrily replies.

In Spare, there is no suggestion that William and Kate were ever at the fancy dress shop at the same time. But Harry does very much paint himself as a victim, claiming the pair promised to help him find a suitable outfit.

The prince says he called them to discuss his options, explaining it was a toss-up between the uniform of an RAF pilot or a Nazi.

He wrote: ‘I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said.’ He describes taking it home and trying it on for them – adding a ‘proper Hitler’ moustache – and ‘they both howled’.

He said William was ‘sympathetic’ at the resulting furore but ‘there wasn’t much to say’. His father was surprisingly understanding, but a public apology was deemed necessary.

The Crown’s award-winning writer, Peter Morgan, has insisted he hasn’t read ‘a word’ of Spare, adding: ‘I didn’t want his voice to inhabit my thinking too much’.

Diana, Princess of Wales showed “obvious ignorance of, or disregard for, constitutional niceties” in relation to Northern Ireland, according to a note from the Irish ambassador in 1993.

The late princess had referred to Northern Ireland as part of Ireland in an interaction which was noted ahead of a historic visit by then-Irish president Mary Robinson to Buckingham Palace.

The meeting in May 1993 would mark the first time a serving president of Ireland visited the United Kingdom, and visited Queen Elizabeth II.

A folder with briefing material for the Irish president ahead of the visit includes a note by the Irish ambassador in London, Joseph Small, where he stated that the Princess Royal had visited Ireland in a private capacity for equestrian functions.

Early last year she said to me, with obvious ignorance of or disregard for constitutional niceties: ‘I was in your country yesterday!’

“Whenever we meet Prince Charles, he invariably says that he would love to visit Ireland,” Mr Small’s briefing note dated May 21 1993 said.

“He is, of course, a regular visit to Northern Ireland (sic). Princess Diana has also been there.

“Early last year she said to me, with obvious ignorance of or disregard for constitutional niceties: ‘I was in your country yesterday!’”

The briefing note also detailed the latest political situation in the UK, included notes on the Irish diaspora in the UK, and on the royal family ahead of what would become a significant visit as Anglo-Irish relations deepened.

Mrs Robinson’s visit to London was planned for May 26-28, where she was to receive the degree of doctor of civil law by diploma from the University of Oxford, become an honorary fellow of Hertford College, Oxford, and present the Irish Post Awards that celebrate the Irish in Britain.

On the second day of the trip at 5pm, Mrs Robinson was to “pay a courtesy call” to Queen Elizabeth II in response to an invite from the monarch.

Among the topics noted for possible discussion between Mrs Robinson and Queen Elizabeth II was Northern Ireland, bombing atrocities in the region and in Britain, cross-border issues and general relations between Ireland and the UK.

Also noted were Mrs Robinson’s appreciation of “her response re Somalia” and her “concerns” regarding Sudan and Yugoslavia and the “British UN military involvement”.

The meeting was scheduled to last around 40 minutes, where tea and light refreshments were to be served.

Mr Robinson also attended the engagement, while the Duke of Edinburgh was in Liverpool attending the anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic.

An observer wrote to the president’s office before the visit and noted some parallels with “the last meeting between an Irish woman leader and a British monarch”.

The writer compared the Buckingham Palace meeting with the Queen of Connaught, Grace O’Malley, visiting Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich Castle exactly 400 years earlier, in 1593.

“Grace, like yourself, was also a Mayo woman!” Dr Donald Martin from Killybegs in Co Donegal wrote, noting that the language spoken at the time was Latin.

Mrs Robinson’s special adviser replied to say Mrs Robinson read the letter with “great interest”.
