at the Duke of York’s barracks in Chelsea – but instead travelled back to Scotland to be with Prince William.

Before Diana married into the Royal Family she lived with Carolyn and two other flatmates – Virginia Pitman and Annie Bolton.

Diana and Annie had their own bedrooms while Carolyn and Virginia shared. The flat was bought for the princess by her mother Frances and Diana charged the girls £18 a week rent.

The trio were some of the princess’s closest friends.

They shared many secrets and stories with one another inside the apartment on the corner of Old Brompton Road and The Little Boltons in south-west London – including the details of Diana’s early relationship with Charles.

One of the flatmates, Virginia Pitman, previously told how Diana burst into the three-bedroom flat and said: ‘Just as I would be saying, “Oh my God, I met this guy last night”, Diana was going, “Oh my God I met this guy at the weekend but I have to call him Your Highness.”

Diana also shared the news of her engagement with her flatmates three weeks before it was officially announced.

Carolyn supported Diana during her own wedding preparations and the trio would visit Diana at Buckingham Palace after she moved there.

Virginia recalled: ‘The sweetest thing I can remember is when she moved into Buckingham Palace.

‘She liked to invite us round there sometimes. We were there when her wedding veil arrived.

‘I think it was Carolyn and me and Diana and we were taking it in turns trying it on and imagining what was coming. It was surreal, wandering around her bedroom in the palace wearing the veil.’

When Carolyn lived with Diana, she was studying singing and piano at the Royal College of Music.

An accomplished sportswoman as well as a musician, it was reported that she had too many rosettes and that they wouldn’t all fit in the flat.

During an auction in 2017, ‘intimate letters’ that Diana sent to Carolyn fetched more than £93,000.

Carolyn is one of Prince Harry’s godmothers and attended his 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle.

Her husband is now a party organiser and the couple have two children together.

Victoria Beckham reveals the REAL reason for her extreme diet and admits she never cooks due to daughter Harper, 13, joking she can ‘burn water’

Victoria Beckham has revealed the real reason for her extreme diet, which according to husband David, has seen her eat the same thing for the last 25 years.

The fashion designer, 50, said she first give up meat when she was only eight and now continues to abide by a strict set of rules for the sake of her skin, after struggling with acne at the height of her Spice Girls fame.

Victoria said she now also avoids certain wheats and flours and keeps her complexion radiant with a £2,000 Dermalux LED device, which she uses for 30-minutes every morning.

She told The Telegraph: ‘It was because of my skin that I became very careful about what I ate.’

Victoria also admitted that she now never cooks after previously trying to master the art when the family lived in Spain, after David signed for Real Madrid in 2003.

She quipped: ‘[My daughter] Harper says I can burn water, so it’s probably better for everyone that I don’t’.

Victoria and David, who wed in 1999, are parents to Brooklyn, 25,  Romeo, 22, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 13.

She also admitted that the reason she always used to look so stern in pictures is because she was self-conscious about her skin.

Over the years, the fashion designer became synonymous for her steely pout, often failing to crack a smile at many a public event.

Victoria has long been open about her insecurity with her ‘problematic’ skin, having suffered with acne since her teens, and struggled soaring to fame in her twenties while having skin issues.

As she reflected on being acutely self-conscious about her looks, she remarked: ‘probably I did look stern in a lot of pictures, but I was so uncomfortable’.

Victoria isn’t the only celeb who has opted for LED treatment, with Light Therapy Masks favoured by A-listers like Kaley Cuoco, Carey Mulligan, Kristen Davis and Suki Waterhouse.

Using a combination of red and infrared light, the at-home beauty device claims to boosts circulation, smooths skin texture, and stimulates collagen production, leaving skin looking plumper and younger.

Victoria insisted in a recent chat with Grazia magazine that she wouldn’t go as far as to give up her beloved wine and she just wants to ‘have a nice time’.

She did, however, admit her diet was ‘disciplined’, stating: ‘This is how I look. I’m going to make the best of it, work hard at it.

    Inside Victoria’s diet

‘I’m very disciplined with the way that I eat, the way that I work out and the way I work. That’s just who I am.’

It perhaps undersells her extreme eating habits, with her husband David previously revealing that Victoria has eaten the same meal every single day for 25 years – grilled fish and steamed vegetables.

‘I get quite emotional about food and wine, when I’m eating something great I want everyone to try it,’ he said.

‘Unfortunately I’m married to someone that has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years!

‘Since I met her she only eats grilled fish [and] steamed vegetables. She will very rarely deviate from that.

‘The only time she’s probably ever shared something that’s been on my plate was actually when she was pregnant with Harper and it was the most amazing thing.

‘It was one of my favourite evenings. I can’t remember what it was but I know she’s not eaten it since.’

In July, Victoria responded to this confession, telling Vogue Australia her husband made her tastes ‘sound boring’ when in fact she fills her diet with ‘healthy fat’ and regularly does detoxes where she abstains from drinking alcohol.

She said: ‘I mean, talk about making me sound boring! No. What he meant is that he’s never met anyone who is more disciplined with the way that they eat.

‘I eat lots of healthy fat: fish, avocado, nuts, that sort of thing. I do drink alcohol, unless I have a reason not to.

Romeo is now enjoying spending time with Kim and a source told The Sun: ‘Romeo is young and single and is happily playing the field. He had a lot of fun with Gray and now he’s enjoying his dates with Kim. She is no stranger to the spotlight and previously dated Madonna’s son Rocco Ritchie.

‘Kim and Romeo were out at Chiltern Firehouse on Tuesday night and Wednesday, where they hung out until the early hours the following day.

Victoria has long been open about her insecurity with her ‘problematic’ skin, having suffered with acne since her teens, and struggled soaring to fame in her twenties while having skin issues.

And in a new interview with The Telegraph, Victoria reflected on feeling ‘so uncomfortable’ when taking photos as she didn’t feel happy within herself to break out into a smile.

During the chat, Victoria – who has received the publication’s inaugural Beauty Brand of the Year award – told how she sought advice from skincare experts, with the fashion designer now following a strict routine to ensure her skin stays clear.

As she reflected on being acutely self-conscious about her looks, Victoria remarked: ‘probably I did look stern in a lot of pictures, but I was so uncomfortable’.

And it wasn’t just her lack of public smiles that were a consequence of her skin problems, but her strict diet too.

Victoria has a famously limited diet, with husband David Beckham previously revealing that she’s eaten the same meal everyday for 25 years – grilled fish and steamed vegetables.

Explaining her decision to eat a very specific diet, Victoria added: ‘It was because of my skin that I became very careful about what I ate’, with the star cutting out meat and wheat among others.

These days, Victoria is much more comfortable in her skin and even offers up a warm smile on many an occasion.

In fact she’s so relaxed about her looks that she revealed how she now even feels comfortable enough to head to glam events with very little make-up on.

She remarked: ‘If you’d told me a few years ago I’d step on to a red carpet to pick up an award wearing only a bit of concealer and no foundation, I’d have thought you were mad, but that’s what I did last week.’

The mother-of-five told how she’s found getting older genuinely liberating, admitting that there was once a time when she used to ‘scroll through comments’ about herself, but these days, she simply doesn’t ‘have the time’.

Victoria shot to fame alongside Geri Halliwell, Mel B, Emma Bunton and Melanie C as part of the Spice Girls in the late 1990s.

They became the best-selling girl group of all time, and Victoria later had a brief solo career before going on into the world of fashion.

David Beckham launches £65 supplement that claims to give your skin and hair a ‘glow up’ – but experts warn of potential risks

Experts today voiced concern over David Beckham‘s new wellness brand, warning the supplements were ‘meaningless nonsense’.

The all-in-one powder ‘Daily Ultimate Essentials’ claims to replace the need for 16 daily supplements with its 92 nutrient-rich ingredients.

The brand IM8, owned by the former footballer, say the £65 product also boosts energy and digestion, as well as giving hair, skin and nails a glow up.

Its ‘Daily Ultimate Longevity’ capsule — setting you back £61 — is also designed to ‘support healthy ageing’.

But experts today labelled the products ‘yet another celebrity endorsed supplement’ and said the brand makes ‘questionable claims’ based purely on ‘limited information from poorly conducted studies’.

Taken in excess, it is ‘unlikely to be harmful’, they cautioned.

However, the quantities of ingredients used in both products are not listed, putting some allergy sufferers at risk, they added, with the benefits of some ingredients even counteracting each other.

Crafted by a team including an ex-NASA chief scientist, IM8 claims it is ‘an unparalleled collaboration between academia, medicine and space science’.

Buying the two products together, dubbed ‘The Beckham Stack’ will cost you a thrifty £100.

Among the 92 ingredients in ‘Daily Ultimate Essentials’ is acai and mixed berry powder which includes a blend of pre, pro, and postbiotics for gut health, as well as  vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, superfoods, greens, and adaptogens — herbs believed to help stress levels.

The second product designed to boost longevity contains a ‘powerful formula’ of ingredients that target ‘the 11 hallmarks of aging’ and ‘enhance cellular health’.

This includes copper to aid ‘blood vessel health, immune function and iron absorption’ and popular supplement vitamin B12 to help ‘energy production and cognitive function’.

But Professor Edzard Ernst, a world-renowned expert in complementary medicine at the University of Exeter, told MailOnline: ‘These products will sell well — not because they work wonders but because Beckham promotes them.

‘Helping your “natural energy” and optimising your “body’s digestive health” are terms that might be good advertising but, scientifically, are meaningless nonsense.’

Professor Penny Ward, an expert in pharmaceutical medicines at Kings College London, also said: ‘This seems to be yet another celebrity endorsed nutritional supplement making questionable claims.

‘These are based on limited information from poorly conducted studies and largely anecdotal statements — often the case, regrettably, for these products.’

She told MailOnline: ‘All that said, the contents are unlikely to be harmful although some folks might react if they have past allergies to any of the ingredients.

‘There is a rare disease called Wilsons Disease which leads to copper overload and people with that might need to avoid this — as they do any foods or medicines containing copper.

‘It is difficult to know precisely how these supplements could affect people as the actual quantities of each ingredient in each “dose” is not even cited.’

While copper has long been considered safe to consume at low levels for many, a buildup of too much can lead to poisoning — a serious problem if not treated.

Symptoms may range from abdominal cramps and vomiting to jaundice, stiff muscles and even liver failure.

Meanwhile, Professor Gunter Kuhnle, an expert in nutrition and food science at the University of Reading, told MailOnline he was ‘sceptical’ of the products given it is not clear how much of each ingredient is present.

Certain amounts of calcium phosphate for instance, present in both supplements can render zinc — another ingredient — useless, for instance.

Professor Kuhnle added: ‘It’s also not clear whether they are even absorbed by the body or not.

After 30 days, 93 per cent of participants reported increased energy levels, while 73 per cent experienced ‘better endurance during workouts’.

Six in ten also noticed improvements in both digestion and the health of their hair, skin, and nails, they claimed.

‘Self-reporting is very questionable because people often don’t remember what they ate correctly’, Professor Kuhnle added.

Dr Adam Collins, an associate professor of nutrition at the University of Surrey, also told MailOnline: ‘Claims regarding increased energy levels and optimised digestive health are highly subjective, and improvements in these areas are challenging to measure scientifically.

‘Gut microbiome changes, for instance, can be temporary and largely reflect recent dietary intake.

‘The clinical trial for these products is still in its recruitment stage, which means we lack robust evidence to support their efficacy.

Forget nepo babies, it’s all about nepo dating! How the children of the rich and famous have turned to each other for love

Children born to the rich and famous most likely have it all; power, money, their parents dazzling good looks, and a lifetime pass to the elite nepo baby club.

It seems one criteria for the exclusive clique is dating a fellow star – one thrust from the loins of a celebrity – as seen in the prestigious unions between Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz, Eric Murphy and Jasmine Lawrence, and Phoebe Gates and Arthur Donald to name a few.

More than just a gorgeous pairing; Brooklyn and Nicola have inherited power couple status from their super famous parents; David and Victoria Beckham, as well as New York-born billionaire Nelson Peltz and his wife Claudia Heffner.

Meanwhile Eddie Murphy‘s son, Eric, is enjoying a glittering romance with actor Martin Lawrence’s stunning daughter, Jasmine Page; with the pair even enjoying minor acting credits – perhaps with a little help from the parents.

The romance between Phoebe Gates, daughter of Microsoft magnate Bill Gates, and Arthur Alistair Donald, grandson of Paul McCartney, was written in the stars – with their first introduction dating back to childhood.

Here, FEMAIL takes a look at how the children of the rich and famous have looked inward and found love with fellow nepo babies.

His parents are among Hollywood elite and she stands to inherit a sum of her father’s whopping $1.3 billion fortune one day; so it’s only right their love reeks of wealth.

Brooklyn Beckham, 25, is the eldest child of Posh and Becks –  also known as David, 49, and Victoria Beckham, 50. Their combined football, celebrity and fashion empires have created a fortune in excess of £450 million.

Though eye-watering, their fortune is less than half of their family-in-law’s astounding $1.3 billion estate. Nicola, 29, is the daughter of Jewish-American entrepreneur Nelson Peltz, 82, and his model wife Claudia Heffner, 69, of whom both share eight children.

Brooklyn and Nicola of course first met at a gathering of fellow celebrities; the 2017 Coachella music festival in California, but they didn’t start dating until 2019.

The now husband and wife first went public with their relationship in 2020 by posting a snap on Instagram; Brooklyn proposed with a $324,700 emerald and diamond ring in July the same year.

Their high profile relationship has been decorated with the sort of lavishness that one could only imagine, including luxury yacht trips, multimillion properties and a designer wardrobe to rival the queen of style herself, Victoria Beckham.

Despite being surrounded by wealth, the couple do have their own things going on, although not at the level of their powerful parents.

Following in her investor father’s footsteps, Nicola and Brooklyn snapped up a $10.5million starter mansion in Beverly Hills after just a few months of dating.

The actress – who starred in Bates Motel – also made her directorial debut this year with drama film Lola.

Meanwhile Brooklyn, who recently revealed that he’s ‘obviously’ a nepo-baby, lingers in the spotlight with a Facebook Watch series called Cookin’ with Brooklyn and a hot sauce named Cloud 23.

While this nepo baby pairing may still be news to some, their romance was clearly hot on the horizon.

Phoebe Gates, 22, is the last born daughter of billionaire Microsoft founder Bill Gates, 69, and his ex-wife – now too a billionaire – Melinda, 60. Her parents are worth north of $160 billion combined.

Arthur Alistair Donald, 25, is the only grandchild to appear on our list, and boasts Beatles legend and billionaire Paul McCartney, 82, as his granddad. His parents are Paul’s daughter Mary McCartney, 55, and her ex husband Alistair Donald, a director and producer, 58.

Through their wealth and connections, the couple were destined to meet; with the friendship between their powerful families going back decades since they were young children.

Phoebe’s father Bill has been friends with Sir Paul since the early noughties and reportedly supported The Beatles star during his messy divorce from ex-wife Heather Mills.

Meanwhile, Paul’s daughter, acclaimed fashion designer Stella McCarthy, became close to Bill’s ex wife Melinda and has been mentoring Phoebe in her fashion career.

But for Phoebe and Arthur, their love officially blossomed in October 2023 which they confirmed with an Instagram snap of the two hanging out in Paris.

She also openly referred to Arthur as her ‘boyfriend’ while documenting her Stanford graduation in an online blog for Nylon.

‘My boyfriend, Arthur, giving me a lift post-ceremony,’ Phoebe wrote in the post for for her graduation – alongside a loved-up snap of her beau giving her a piggyback.

The pair are currently working on their own dynasties, with Arthur, a Yale graduate, working as an investor, and Phoebe recently graduating from Stanford.

The offspring of a real estate executive and music royalty are perhaps not the most obvious nepo baby pairing; nevertheless, they both came up in money.

The Stranger Things actress, 20, was born to British real estate agent, Robert and his wife Kelly Brown in Marbella, Spain. Though not much is known about the exact sum of Robert’s wealth, he earned enough to pack up ship and move to America to help Millie with her acting.

Meanwhile Jake, 22, was born to high school sweethearts Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea Hurley, both 62, in 2002. His father Jon is a rock legend and New Jersey native who once fronted group Bon Jovi. He is worth an nearly half a billion dollars.

The celebrity couple sent fans into a frenzy when they sparked romance rumors in 2021 – but shockingly they met how any other Gen Z couple would.

In 2022, while talking to Wired, Millie revealed the two first connected on Instagram: ‘We met on Instagram. And we were friends for a bit, and then, what can I say?’ she told the publication.

Only a few weeks later the pair were spotted out and about sweetly holding hands as they enjoyed a coffee run in the Big Apple.

Since then it appears they have been inseparable, opting to tie the knot in May this year. The lovebirds said ‘I do’ during an intimate ceremony in Tuscany, Italy with only close family in attendance to witness the special milestone.

Robert Brown’s sacrifice paid off as Millie now boasts an illustrious career in TV and film, while her proud husband enjoys life as a model and ‘aspiring actor’ – according to his dad.

Eric Murphy and Jasmin Lawrence descend from comedy excellence and count Hollywood’s most famous funnymen as parents.

Eric, 35, is the oldest child of Eddie’s 10 kids; he welcomed his son in 1989 with then girlfriend Paulette McNeely.

Known for his on stage wit and countless acting personalities, the comedy icon’s career spawns five decades, and has brought in a net worth in excess of $200 million.

Jasmin, 28, was born to Bad Boys and Martin actor, Martin Lawrence. She is the eldest of Martin’s three daughters who he shares with former wife Patricia Southall. Hot off the fourth installment of action comedy, Bad Boys, with Will Smith, it is reported that the actor is worth hundreds of million.

The sweethearts first confirmed their relationship in a sweet Instagram post in 2021 when they took a happy selfie to mark Eric’s 32nd birthday.

The couple were destined to meet with Eddie, 63, and Martin, 59, having collaborated on past comedy films such as 1991's Boomerang and 1992's Life

‘Happy birthday, my love!’ she said. ‘I’m so incredibly blessed to know you, to love you, and to have you by my side. Cheers to many more blessings, laughs, and beautiful memories! I love you so much!!’

Their paths were destined to cross with Eddie, 63, and Martin, 59, having collaborated on past comedy films such as 1991’s Boomerang and 1992’s Life.

Their children are still together and even made an appearance at the red carpet premiere of movie Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F in July.

Recently Eddie opened up about his son’s relationship and the idea of comedy running in the family: ‘They’re both beautiful, they look amazing together’ he said. ‘And it’s funny, everybody’s like, “What is that baby gonna be funny?” Our gene pool is gonna make this funny baby’.

The Coming To America star doesn’t have to look too far as both his son and Jasmine have followed their parents’ career paths into entertainment.

Eric is a writer, voice actor and producer, and most recently revealed that he worked on Automated Dialogue Replacement on his father’s Beverly Hills Cop movie.

Meanwhile Jasmin, who graduated from Duke University in 2018, appeared in her dad’s hit film Bad Boys for Life.

Although both Frances Bean Cobain and Riley Hawk grew up in money – they have lived very different lives

The descendant of a 90s rock star has found love in the arms of a famous skateboarder’s son.

The world learned Frances Bean Cobain and Riley Hawk were an item in 2022, with rumours first swirling on Reddit, when one user posted a photo of them out at dinner together with Riley’s parents, Tony and Catherine.

Frances Cobain, 32, is the daughter of Hole frontwoman and actress Courtney Love, and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who is regarded as one of the most influential alternative rock musicians in the world.

Riley Hawk, 31, was born to skateboarding legend, Tony Hawk, 56, and his ex wife Cindy Dunbar, whom Tony was married to from 1990 until 1993. He is Tony’s oldest son.

Kurt and Courtney’s combined estate is thought to sit in the region of half a billion dollars, while Riley’s father brings in north of $100 million.

And while the two may have generational wealth in common, Frances’ life of tragedy differs profoundly from that of her famous partner’s.

Being born to two of the biggest stars in the world meant Frances was thrust into the spotlight almost immediately – and thanks to her parents’ very-public infatuation with the wild side, she was also the subject of scandal very quickly.

When Frances was just two-years old, her father Kurt Cobain passed away after committing suicide inside his Lake Washington Boulevard home on April 5, 1994.

On the 30th anniversary of the singer’s death earlier this year, Frances reflected on the loss by penning a heartbreaking tribute on Instagram.

‘The biggest lesson learned through grieving for almost as long as I’ve been conscious, is that it serves a purpose’ she wrote.

She added: ‘As It turns out, there is no greater motivation for leaning into loving awareness than knowing everything ends.

‘I wish I could’ve known my dad. I wish I knew the cadence of his voice, how he liked his coffee or the way it felt to be tucked in after a bedtime story’.

When she was 11, she witnessed her mom overdosing on painkillers, after which the youngster made the actress some tea while they waited for the ambulance together.

Like her parents, Frances has struggled with addiction which she blames on having access to so much money at a young age.

She inherited all of her famous father’s $140 million earnings after his death, and reportedly receives an additional $100,000 each month from his royalties.

Frances has spoken negatively about her wealth, explaining that it’s made her feel extremely ‘guilty’ and left her spending ‘excessively’ – but she turned her life around after suffering from a near-death experience on an airplane and has now been sober for years.

Despite her celebrity roots, she’s made it clear that she doesn’t want anything to do with Hollywood – calling it ‘pretentious, sh**ty, and filled to the brim with the worst people she’s ever met’. She has even turned down many movie roles over the years, including Bella Swan in Twilight.

For the aspiring musician and visual artist, it appears the controversy is all behind her as she looks ahead to a new life with her famous partner Riley. The pair tied the knot in a ceremony in Los Angeles in October 2023 and have since welcomed their first child together.

Riley Hawke has happily followed his father’s footsteps into the skating world and is a celebrated street skater.

‘It was one of those situations where I knew the second I met him that I wanted to be his wife one day. So, it was just a matter of when, really,’ the actress previously shared on Live with Kelly and Ryan.

Despite growing up around fame, Lily admitted she only first realised the level of her father’s fame when they were on a family trip to Disneyland when she was a child.

Speaking candidly to Radio Times in 2020 she remembered seeing a man sporting a t-shirt with the music icon’s face on his t-shirt.

Victoria Beckham just wanted to fit in growing up.

During the former Spice Girl’s interview with Nicole Kidman for Vogue Australia, the Academy Award winner asked Beckham, 50, whether she really got driven to school in a Rolls-Royce.

“You know, my dad had a Rolls-Royce and he also had a white van,” she began. “I came from a working-class background and so my dad in the 80s, he was an entrepreneur, he started his business with my mum at the kitchen table and he did very well, so he bought himself a Rolls-Royce.”

Beckham added that she went to a regular school and hadn’t lived in a big house, but as soon as her father, Anthony Adams, started making money, he treated himself to the luxury car.

“One day we’d go to school in the Rolls-Royce and one day we’d go in the van because he’d still work, he was an electrical wholesaler and he was very much a worker.”

“Me and my siblings used to beg him, can we please go to school in the white van?” Beckham continued. “Like, we were mortified at the idea of going in the Rolls-Royce. How things have changed!”

Beckham is the oldest of three, which includes her sister Louise and her brother Christian.

The model added that in the present day, she wouldn’t mind riding around in a luxury car but growing up it was more about fitting in. “Nowadays, I’d be like, don’t worry about the van, let’s go in the Roller! But in those days, we just wanted to fit in.”

Beckham’s upbringing came into the spotlight in October 2023 following the premiere of the Netflix documentary Beckham. In a now-viral moment from the documentary, the model said that she grew up “very working class.”

The moment instantly went viral. Beckham even debuted a T-shirt poking fun at the viral moment.

Beckham’s parents, Jackie and Anthony Adams, lived modestly. However, her father found success when he founded his own electronics supply company. Jackie, who was an insurance clerk, and Anthony, who was an electrical engineer, have been married for 54 years.

From the green Burberry coat she wore dating Prince Charles to an iconic Versace gown on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar, not to mention jewelry, LPs and a childhood teddy bear, it’s a collection of treasures from every era of Princess Diana’s life.

Author and Diana expert Renae Plant has scoured the globe to amass a cornucopia of exhibits that once belonged to the late princess – including some of the most famous gowns in the world.

Yet among the most surprising things of all is that this mesmerizing collection remains entirely under lock and key, confined to the darkness of an anonymous warehouse in Los Angeles.

While millions of Diana fans have been able to view the exhibition online, Renae believes it’s time her vast collection should seen up close and in person.

Which is why, today, she’s looking for investors to help build a physical home for this extraordinary enterprise.

Known as the Swan Lake dress, Diana wore this beaded gown by French designer Jacques Azagury to a performance by the English National Ballet at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in June 1997.  It takes pride of place in Renae Plant's collection

‘There is something magical about seeing a dress worn by Diana with your own eyes,’ explained Australian-born Renae.

‘Diana captured an era, a moment in time. You can’t help but be moved by it. ‘My dream is to find someone experienced in working with historical collections like this to help find the Princess Diana Museum a bricks and mortar home. The time has come.’

Among the 2700 separate items are a green velvet Catherine Walker dress worn to the National Portrait gallery in March 1995.

There’s also a couture beaded blue-grey silk dress by the same designer worn by Diana to a charity auction of her dresses in June 1997, shortly before her death. That, too, is instantly recognizable to fans.

Still more poignant is the Chanel wool dress jacket and belt which Diana wore to her grandmother and father’s funerals.

The collection, which can be viewed online in 3D, includes a replica of the ‘Swan Lake’ dress worn by Diana to a Royal Gala performance of the ballet at London’s Royal Albert Hall in June 1997, hand-beaded by designer Jacques Azagury with crystal bugle beads.

Then there’s the ‘Washington’ dress, a red silk georgette column gown worn by the princess to a Red Cross Ball Gala dinner at the British Embassy, Washington, in June 1997.

Renae’s museum covers every decade of Diana’s life.

A well-worn childhood teddy bear and Barbie doll sit alongside exquisite baby dresses, a paint box and an amethyst friendship ring.

From her teenage years the collection houses LP albums including favorite records by Abba, the Beatles, and Bryan Adams. There’s also an Elton John disc which, touchingly, has a heart drawn by Diana around the song ‘Candle in the Wind’ on the cover.

Elton would become one of Diana’s closest confidantes and this is the song, of course, that he would later rework into a poignant tribute played live at Diana’s 1997 funeral.

Visitors to The Princess Diana Museum can see images of the princess’s Hunter rainboots, worn during a photoshoot in Balmoral, Scotland in May 1981 with her then-fiancé Prince Charles ahead of their July 29,1981 wedding. They look particularly well worn-in.

The collection features Diana’s classic olive-green Burberry wool coat with ‘Diana Spencer’ sewn into the label.

She often wore this when dating Charles, including on the occasion when in October 24, 1980, she was photographed at Ludlow Races with Camilla Parker Bowles – the woman who would become her nemesis and of whom Diana famously said: ‘There were three people in this marriage.’

Diana’s ‘black sheep’ sweater is part of the collection as, intriguingly, is a ‘spare’ wedding dress made by designers Elizabeth and David Emanuel, a back-up in case the real dress was stolen or burned in a fire.

The wide-ranging collection includes more unusual items like the bicycle ridden to Kensington Palace by Diana’s friend Dr James Colthurst as he and Diana secretly taped interviews which would later be used to devastating effect by Andrew Morton in his 1992 book ‘Diana: Her True Story.’

At the other end of the technological scale, there are electronic scrambling devices the paranoid princess attached to her phones, so convinced was she that ‘men in grey suits’ at the Palace were spying on her.

Renae, herself, has conducted hours of interviews with members of Diana’s inner circle including her security guards, designers, staff members and personal hairdresser Richard Dalton, who styled the princess’s hair for a decade.

She has co-authored a new book with Mr Dalton, ‘It’s All About the Hair: My Decade With Diana’, a 444-page tome which describes how he created some of the princess’s most memorable looks.

‘It’s so important to me that Diana’s legacy is preserved,’ said Renae.

‘Before I opened my online museum I wrote to both Prince Harry and Prince William to seek their permission, which they gave. I would never have embarked on this project without their approval.’

Renae’s passion for the princess was conceived after she met Diana as a child.

That was when Diana visited The Ginger Factory in Yandina, Queensland near Renea’s hometown in April 1983 and shook Renae’s hand – although at that stage she could hardly have known she would one day curate one of the world’s great Diana collections.

Moments later, as she walked away, the princess dropped a tiny clay model of a platypus in the dirt.

Renae recalled the moment: ‘Diana and Charles were about to get into the car and I ran over to a policemen who had shut the gate and I said: ‘Lady Di dropped this!’

‘He looked me in the eyes and said: “She must have dropped it to give it to you.”’

And Renae has treasured the tiny platypus ever since.

It has even inspired the name of her Princess and The Platypus charitable foundation, to which her Diana museum belongs.

Renae met Diana for a second time when the Prince and Princess of Wales made their 1988 tour of Australia.

‘Even thought I was born in Australia, like millions around the world I could relate to Diana,’ recalled Renae. ‘She was a princess, yet she was vulnerable and struggled like the rest of us.

‘Diana exuded a compassion for humankind. She was the first royal to remove her gloves and shake the public’s hands.

‘She helped diminish the stigma around AIDS when everyone else was scared to touch visibly ill AIDS patients.

‘Diana touched millions with her style, grace and human kindness.

‘To me this has been a legacy of love. It’s about preserving and honoring Diana both now and for future generations.’

Renae bought her first Diana dress in December 2014, a red number by designer Caroline Charles.

‘My husband Livinio and I had saved up some money and were about to invest it in a restaurant. ‘But when I saw the dress – it was one Diana was photographed in carrying Prince William in 1982 – I knew I had to buy it,’ she said.

‘I see it as my mission to preserve her legacy for future generations.

‘At some stage, Diana will become the mother of the King, when William takes over, and she will continue to be a historic figure long after we are gone.’

Renae has amassed a collection of Diana’s jewelry, too.

This features a pair of Avon gold button earrings, a present from Diana’s mother Frances Shand Kydd which Diana then gave away to raise money.

The collection also includes Venus black pearl and Venus white pearl drop earrings, both gifts from her father Earl Spencer. They, too, had been donated to charity to raise money for AIDS.

A striking Butler & Wilson diamond necklace given to Diana from Prince Charles has found its way to Renae’s museum by the same route.

Perhaps one of the most poignant of Renae’s exhibits is a Jacques Azagury ‘Final Goodbye’ dress in black silk georgette.

The last gown Diana ever tried on, she wore it at a fitting with Azagury, one of her favorite designers, in August 1997. Days later she was dead.

The pins are still there, sticking into the unfinished back straps, awaiting Diana’s return.

Was she really Diana’s ‘wicked’ stepmother? Born 95 years ago today to novelist Barbara Cartland, how Raine Spencer defied cruel depiction to become a confidante to the troubled Princess

Coached by her mother to focus on her appearance rather than academics, Princess Diana‘s stepmother started adult life as debutante of the year at just 18.

On September 9, 1929 – 95 years ago today – Raine Spencer was born to romantic novelist Barbara Cartland and printing heir Alexander McCorquodale.

Her mother – who published more than 700 books in her lifetime – had several lovers during the marriage and admitted there were some questions over who Raine’s father really was.

Raine’s parents divorced when she was a small child and Barbara went on to marry her ex-husband’s first cousin, Hugh McCorquodale, and have two more children.

The youngster was discouraged from pursuing her intellect by her mother, who would tell her when she came home from school with news of her latest academic achievement: ‘Oh, do tidy your hair, darling. No man wants a clever woman’.

Raine, who died aged 87 in 2016, would go on to marry three times, but it was as the wife of her second husband – the 8th Earl Spencer – that she cemented her status in the national consciousness.

She was portrayed as Diana’s ‘wicked’ stepmother and as ‘Acid Raine’ by her critics – but she actually became a confidante of the Princess in later life.

Raine’s first marriage was to Gerald Legge, the 9th Earl of Dartmouth.

The couple were together for 25 years and had four children – William, Rupert, Charlotte and Henry.

At the age of 23 – not long after she had welcomed her first child, Raine’s strong interest in politics saw her become the youngest member of Westminster City Council.

She began an affair with Earl Spencer in 1973, when the aristocrat was a colleague of hers on an architectural heritage committee.

Three years later, Raine and her husband divorced and she married Earl Spencer, whose wife Frances had left him for wallpaper tycoon Peter Shand Kydd in 1969.

However, Raine’s presence was not welcomed by her new stepchildren – Lady Diana, then 14, and her younger siblings, Charles, Sarah and Jane.

Missing their mother, Frances Shand Kydd, after a bitter divorce and custody battle, the children turned to saying ‘Raine, Raine go away’.

Much to their distaste, Raine set out to renovate Althorp House, leading to claims that she sold off treasures to fund the works.

When Earl Spencer had a massive stroke and ended up in London’s Royal Brompton Hospital, Raine resorted to placing a Walkman on his head and playing him an aria from his favourite opera.

Over many months, Raine nursed him slowly back to health, although it was claimed that she had kept Diana and her siblings away from the hospital, insisting she should be the only one to take care of him while he was in a coma.

Despite his recovery, it would take Diana years to thank her step mother.

Diana went as far to claim that she had pushed Raine down the stairs because she and her father refused to say ‘hello’ to her mother at her brother’s wedding to Victoria Lockwood in 1989.

Three years later, after the death of their father, the Spencer children forced Raine to leave the family home.

There were even reports that Diana had filled binbags with Raine’s clothes and that her brother kicked them down the stairs.

She would go on to marry French aristocrat Count Jean-François de Chambrun within a year, but their union lasted less than two years.

Although this failed romance was mocked by the Spencer children, Diana unexpectedly handed Raine an olive branch after her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996.

Speaking in 2017 documentary Diana’s Wicked Stepmother, the Princess’s former butler Paul Burrell said: ‘Diana was fully aware of what she was doing, she knew that this was a U-turn day.

‘She knew the Spencer family would not be very happy but she couldn’t care less because she thought it was time Raine came back.’

Diana was said to have started crying and thanked Raine for the love she had shown her father, before the two women hugged.

It was from then that Raine would go on to communicate with her step daughter regularly, but it was only after Diana’s death that the extent of their relationship was revealed.

In 2007 she appeared at the inquest into her step daughter’s death and said: ‘She always said I had no hidden agenda,’ Raine told the court.

‘So many people, because she was so popular and so world-famous, wanted something out of her. It was a very draining life.’

Right up until close to the end of her life, Raine worked as a director at Harrods after being given the opportunity by owner Mohamed Al-Fayed – the father of Diana’s lover Dodi, who died with the Princess in Paris in 1997.

She passed away on October 21, 2016 after battling cancer.

  • The truth behind Prince William using Diana’s engagement ring to propose to Kate – as Prince Harry says rumours he gave it to his brother are ‘absolutely rubbish’

The truth behind Prince William using Diana’s engagement ring to propose to Kate – as Prince Harry says rumours he gave it to his brother are ‘absolutely rubbish’

After Princess Diana‘s tragic death in 1997, it was only natural for her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, to choose a personal item of hers as a reminder of their mother.

Harry reportedly selected Diana’s Garrard sapphire engagement ring, while William opted for her Cartier Tank Française watch.

In 2010, it is believed the brothers swapped items, so William could use the ring to propose to Kate Middleton. Later, Harry gave the luxurious timepiece to Meghan Markle.

However, in his bombshell biography Spare, released last year, the Duke of Sussex branded these reports ‘absolutely rubbish’.

Instead, Harry claimed William was already in possession of their mother’s ring when he proposed to Kate, so he was never asked to give it up.

One of the most famous pieces of jewellery in history, the Garrard sapphire and diamond engagement ring was purchased by Charles for Diana in 1981. It cost £28,000 and is now valued at upwards of £300,000

Additionally, Harry said he was unaware of William’s intention to marry Kate until the engagement was publicly announced.

‘Soon after we returned to Britain the Palace announced that Willy was going to marry. November 2010,’ the Prince wrote.

‘News to me. All that time together in Lesotho, he’d never mentioned it.

‘The papers published florid stories about the moment I realised Will and Kate were well matched, the moment I appreciated the depth of their love and thus decided to gift Willy the ring I’d inherited from Mummy, the legendary sapphire, a tender moment between brothers, a bonding moment for all three of us, and absolute rubbish: none of it ever happened.’

Harry went on to deny ever asking for the piece of jewellery after Diana’s death and wrote: ‘I never gave Willy that ring because it wasn’t mine to give. He already had it. He’d asked for it after Mummy died, and I’d been more than happy to let it go.’

The ring, inspired by Queen Victoria‘s sapphire brooch from 1840, which she wore as her ‘something blue’ on her wedding day, symbolised marriage, family and love.

When presented with various options, Diana and Charles reportedly selected this ring together, as it complemented her blue eyes.

The choice of a catalogue ring rather than a custom-designed piece broke royal tradition, making it possible for others to purchase the same engagement ring.

Do YOU think Prince Harry gave the ring to his brother?

In another twist, Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, told the Mirror that he was present when the brothers selected the items to remember their mother by.

Paul claimed: ‘Harry said to me, “I always remember holding Mummy’s hand and that ring hurting me because it was so big”.

‘And that’s why, when the boys came to Kensington Palace, I said to them, you must take something of your Mother’s. You must take something to remind yourself of your time here at Kensington Palace and your mother’s life.’

The former royal employee claimed that William asked to keep Diana’s Cartier watch, which had been a present from her father on her 21st birthday, while Harry chose her engagement ring, which has now been worn by Kate for almost 14 years.

What’s more, Paul says that William was ‘happy with the arrangement’.

Diana wore her beloved Cartier Tank Française on several occasions, including a 1997 visit to London’s Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple and an engagement at the British Lung Foundation that same year.

At the time, the yellow gold watch was priced at £17,800. Harry later gave it to Meghan, who has worn it countless times, often stacked with a Cartier Love bracelet.

It is a clear favourite from her inherited collection.
