Royal Family LIVE: Prince Harry ‘ready to forgive’ but two key royals are ‘resisting’

Jennie Bond says Prince Harry is ready to forgive and make amends with his estranged family.

Prince Harry is ready to reconcile with the Royal Family but King Charles and Prince William appear to be resisting efforts, a leading royal commentator has claimed. Relations between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, have been strained since the pair stepped back from royal duties and went on to make a series of allegations against the Firm in their Netflix docu-series, Harry’s memoir Spare and in TV interviews.

Asked who is hampering efforts at reconciliation between the Duke of Sussex and the Windsors, the BBC’s former royal correspondent Jennie Bond told Times Radio it doesn’t appear to be coming from Harry.

She said: “Early on it was Harry, who was demanding an apology. There was going to be no meeting of minds or meeting in reality until there was an apology for the affronts he thought had been made to his wife. But now I think the tables have turned somewhat. Messages coming from Harry’s side are that he’s ready at least to forgive and that he loves his family. He’s said that quite publicly. He wants to see more of them.

“But it is Charles and William who seem to be resisting reconciliation at this point so I think it was first one, then the other.”

Quizzed on whether that chimed with what is known about William’s character, Ms Bond said once the Prince of Wales has set his mind on something it would be very hard to dissuade him.

She added that as the years go by she hoped there would be a reconciliation, saying time can be a healer, but can also lead to people feeling entrenched in their positions.

The comments came after Harry visited London for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games but saw neither his brother nor his father.

Harry has special place in King’s heart but Charles avoiding reconciliation for one reason

Prince Harry reportedly wants to reconcile with King Charles, but the monarch “just wants peace” in his twilight years, a source has suggested.

An insider told the Mirror: “Harry’s made his bed. I’m an advocate for protecting your peace, and if this young man is bringing the drama, then good on King Charles for giving him the space he needs to grow.

“King Charles just wants to have his peace in his twilight years. He doesn’t want to argue.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle slammed after massive eco-blunder

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been embroiled in fresh controversy over their environmental stance after it emerged they took two complimentary private flights during their trip to Nigeria.

The couple, accompanied by a small group, were flown by Nigerian carrier Air Peace on a 120-seat aircraft for a 664-mile round trip from Abuja to Lagos on May 12, resulting in approximately 12 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Prince Harry’s ‘best friend’ in new betrayal as he joins up with Meghan’s enemy

Prince Harry’s former best mate has sparked speculation of a deep rift after joining forces with Meghan Markle’s “arch-nemesis”, Jeremy Clarkson.

The former Top Gear presenter caused a stir in 2022 with his scathing piece in The Sun, where he expressed his hatred for the Ducess of Sussex.

Hugh van Cutsem, a lifelong friend to both Harry and Prince William, appeared on Clarkson’s hit Amazon Prime series, Clarkson’s Farm.

Van Cutsem was featured hunting deer with Clarkson in the seventh episode, hinting that the 49 year old may be the latest in Harry’s circle to part ways with the Royal.

How Prince William has finally ‘disowned’ estranged Harry

Prince William has finally “disowned” his estranged brother, Prince Harry and doesn’t give him a “thought,” a royal expert has claimed.

The BBC’s former royal correspondent Jennie Bond told Times Radio: “I think as far as William is concerned, Harry really doesn’t exist.

“William has enough pressure on his heart and his head, with his wife and her ongoing cancer treatment, and his father, his job and his kids that I don’t think he’s got any room in his soul to worry about his estranged brother…I think William has disowned Harry.”

How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s secret wedding ‘lie’ was exposed

Meghan Markle revealed in 2021 that she and Prince Harry got married on May 16, 2018 – three days prior to their official wedding in Windsor.

Speaking to Oprah Winfrey in their infamous interview, the Duchess of Sussex revealed that the Archbishop of Canterbury had carried out the secret ceremony at Kensington Palace.

Meghan, who was heavily pregnant with Princess Lilibet at the time of the interview, said: “Three days before our wedding, we got married.”

Harry added it was just the two of them and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle alarmingly silent on wedding anniversary after royals snub

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s sixth wedding anniversary quietly passed by, with neither the couple nor the Royal family publicly acknowledging the occasion.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot six years ago yesterday (May 19) in a grand ceremony in Windsor, followed by an exclusive evening reception.

However, it seems that any celebrations this year have been kept under wraps, with no social media tributes from the couple.

Not only have Harry and Meghan remained silent on their anniversary, but the Royal Family has also refrained from marking the occasion.

Meghan Markle’s ‘first mistake’ as a working royal before it all went downhill

Meghan Markle made her “first mistake” as a working member of the Royal Family back in 2019, claims journalist Liz Jones.

In her column for dailymail.co.uk, Ms Jones openly admits she was a fan of the former actress at the time of her royal wedding.

But her time as a fan “cooled” when Meghan visited sex workers in Bristol at the start of 2019 – and mostly notably wrote messages on bananas for them.

Ms Jones wrote: “It was Bananagate, when Meghan, still a working Royal, visited sex workers in Bristol, scrawling positive mantras on fruit.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been spotted arriving in Los Angeles after a marathon 18-hour flight from Nigeria amid a row over their charity’s operating status in California.

The couple, who left Abuja yesterday following a three-day visit, were pictured being whisked away by a car at Los Angeles International Airport’s ‘Private Suites’ facility.

The Duke and Duchess have called the semi-royal tour ‘fantastic’ and said it will be the ‘first of many memorable trips’ – which included a moment where Meghan hailed Nigeria as ‘her country’ after a DNA test suggested she was part-Nigerian.

They landed back in the United States a few hours before Californian authorities confirmed a ‘delinquency’ row involving their charitable endeavour, the Archewell Foundation, had been resolved following confusion over an unprocessed cheque.

California‘s Department of Justice listed the charity, which brought in around $9million (£7.1million) less in donations in 2022 than it did the year before, as ‘not in good standing’ because of an alleged failure to pay a $200 renewal fee.

Meghan hopped into a waiting SUV wearing a brown coat, matching pumps and white trousers while Harry wore understated dark trousers and a dark jacket paired with a green shirt.

There have been eight press releases on Sussex.com about the couple’s visit to Nigeria, which took them to Abuja and Lagos and ran last week from Friday until Sunday. None mentioned the issues with the Archewell foundation.

In a press release about their trip coming to end, the Sussexes referred to the reception they received in Lagos and their attendance at a polo match.

The statement said: ‘Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex concluded their unforgettable trip to Nigeria with a cultural reception in Lagos and a polo match fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.

‘The couple was greeted with a beautiful pre-game parade – a vibrant display of young enthusiasts in polo gear, proudly waving the green and white flags of Nigeria – followed by a procession of older children on horseback, setting the tone for a day filled with sport and spirit.

‘The friendly rivalry between the teams, aptly named Duke vs Duchess, added a layer of excitement to the event, with the Duchess’s team claiming victory with a score of 5-3. The day was capped off with the couple presenting medals, a gesture of appreciation for the players’ prolific talent and dedication.

‘The Duke and Duchess would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all the event organisers, military officials and the whole Nigerian community for their tremendous hospitality and the first of many memorable trips.’

But as they landed, Archewell was involved in a row over its charitable status after it was accused of failing to send a $200 renewal fee cheque to California’s Registry of Charities and Fundraisers.

The registry said Archewell had failed to submit its annual report or renewal fees, while sources close to the Sussexes insisted it was because the Attorney General’s office did not process a $200 cheque they previously thought lost in the post.

Since then, the charity says it has been in touch with California’s Department of Justice (DoJ), which operates the registry, to clear up the confusion.

The DoJ says it considers the matter closed and that, as of now, the Archewell Foundation is ‘current and in good standing’ with Californian authorities.

A spokesperson for the Archewell Foundation said: ‘We have diligently investigated the situation and can confirm that The Archewell Foundation remains fully compliant and in good standing.

A letter from California’s Registry of Charities and Fundraisers had previously warned: ‘An organisation that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds.

‘The organisation may also be subject to penalties and its registration may be suspended or revoked by the Registry.

‘Once you submit the delinquent record(s), you will be notified of the amount of any late fees that are owed.’

But Sussex sources claimed the ‘delinquency notice’ was actually issued because Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office did not process the $200 cheque.

This was a different explanation to the one offered by the same Sussex sources last night, who claimed that the paperwork was filed on time but the discrepancy was down to a cheque which accompanied the documents going missing in the post.

It is understood that conflicting claims regarding what had happened coming from Archewell this week over the Department of Justice’s issuing of a notice of ‘delinquency’ was in part down to many of the Sussexes team travelling in Nigeria.

The sources say payments were made promptly and ‘in accordance with’ the IRS’s processes and procedures and paperwork filed correctly, ‘without error or wrongdoing’.

They added that records proved the required payment of $200 was delivered last November via tracked post.

A search of the registry confirms the organisation’s status with the DoJ is ‘current’. Its most recent renewal documents were marked as being received today.

In a written statement issued to MailOnline, the California DoJ said: ‘After being in touch with our Registry of Charities and Fundraisers, the organization is current and in good standing.’

The $200 cheque was for an annual registration renewal fee, which is determined by a sliding scale based on an organisation’s total revenue.

In Archewell’s case, its most recent revenue was about $2million – putting it within the ‘between $1,000,001 and $5 million’ section of the sliding scale.

The $200 figure has been confirmed to MailOnline by a source close to the Sussexes.

Harry and Meghan’s three-day visit to Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria was dubbed a royal tour in all but name, with the couple given the VIP treatment by the Nigerian authorities.

The tour, from Friday until Sunday, saw the couple visiting with charities and initiatives that promote looking after the mental health and wellbeing of soldiers and empower young people.

Meghan also hailed Nigeria as ‘my country’ after revealing on her Archetypes podcast two years ago that a DNA-based test showed she was ’43 per cent Nigerian’.

Appearing at an event on women in leadership without Harry, in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, the duchess said: ‘I want to start by saying thank you very much for just how gracious you’ve all been in welcoming my husband and I to this country… my country.’

The visit also saw the Duke visit Kaduna to meet wounded and injured service members at a military hospital – including two men seen at last year’s Invictus Games.

And the couple visited Nigeria: Unconquered, the charity supported by the friendly polo match, which supports wounded, injured and sick service members in Nigeria that is partnered with the Invictus Games Foundation.

Harry even had time to join in a game of sitting volleyball – one of a number of modified sports that forms part of the Invictus Games programme.

On its website, it says its mission is to ‘show up, do good’, adding: ‘We meet the moment by showing up, taking action and using our unparalleled spotlight to uplift and unite communities – local and global – through acts of service and compassion.’

The foundation is separate from the couple’s Archewell media and business divisions which have been involved in the Netflix and Spotify productions.

According to tax filings disclosed by Archewell last December, the organisation had suffered an $11million (£9million) decline in donations in 2022 compared to the previous year.

The records showed that the charity received just over $2million (£1.6million) in charitable donations in 2022 compared to $13million (£10million) in 2021.

And while in 2021 Archewell had reported a revenue of more than $9million (£7million), the December 2023 filings showed that by 2022 it had recorded a loss of more than $674,000 (£537,000) due to costs of $2.67million (£2.13million).

Royal Family warned about Meghan Markle’s next moves as ‘best thing is yet to come’

A US TV star has sung Meghan Markle’s praises and said she will continue to challenge the British monarchy.

Meghan Markle was praised by a TV star who claimed the former Suits actress still has a lot up her sleeve and will continue to shake up the Royal Family despite leaving the Firm.

The Duchess of Sussex quit her royal duties along husband Prince Harry in 2020 before they both moved to the US.

Ever since then, they’ve made a series of explosive claims against the royals, through interviews, their Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, and the duke’s memoir, Spare.

But now former The Real Housewives of Atlanta star Phaedra Parks, who’s also an activist and an attorney in the US, spoke favourably of the duchess and the things she’s done ever since marrying into the Firm, the Mirror reports.

During a speech at the opening of the Beverly Hills Rejuvenation Center’s brand-new West Hollywood location, Ms Parks praised Meghan for trying to have her voice heard and representing the African-American community.

She said: “I think when you think about the Royal Family and hierarchy and being born into status and class, race has definitely played a part of that because African-Americans have not been a part of being born into royalty.

“So being honest about it, I’m sure they (the royals) never thought this discussion would be a part of their history, but the world is obviously evolving so quickly. And so now they do have a Meghan Markle and she represents a portion of the African-American community.

“So by her obviously vocalising what was going on with the Royal Family and with her situation with her marriage, I think people are obviously having hard discussions.”

The duchess sent shockwaves around the world in 2021 when, during her and Harry’s Oprah Winfrey interview, she alleged there was a member of the Firm who made comments about then-unborn Prince Archie’s skin colour.

The US attorney stressed that Meghan will continue to challenge the monarchy over race relations, saying: “Meghan Markle is very iconic because she did, she’s obviously the first woman of colour to marry into a Royal Family. I think she stood her ground.

“I think she’s very intelligent and I just see her, I mean, it’s historical what she has done and it’s their decisions have been historical.

“So I’m just excited to be at this moment in history where I can say I have seen an African-American president, a black woman enter into the royal family. And the best is obviously still to come.”

Meghan Markle and Kate, Princess of Wales experienced a significant wedding disagreement, involving tears and tense text messages, just days before the nuptials.

The Duchess of Sussex’s relationship with Princess Kate has reportedly been strained since Prince Harry introduced her to the Royal Family, and this rift was exacerbated in the lead up to Harry and Meghan’s May 2018 wedding day.

It was reported that the former Suits actress had reduced Kate to tears over a dispute concerning Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress, and palace officials have so far declined to deny these allegations, thereby adding fuel to the rumour mill.

The real story behind Meghan and Kate’s flower girl dress feud was revealed by an insider close to Kate and William.

They reportedly told Tatler magazine in 2020 that the argument was about whether the flower girls should wear tights due to the warm weather on the beautiful May day when Harry and Meghan got married.

While Kate believed they should adhere to Royal protocol and wear tights, Meghan disagreed because of the heat, leading to a fallout between the two women.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, addressed the reported feud between Meghan and Kate. Meghan clarified that it was her sister-in-law who initiated the disagreement, which has since been resolved.

“A few days before the wedding she was upset about something, pertaining to, yes, the issue was correct, about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings,” Meghan disclosed, reports the Mirror.

“It was a really hard week of the wedding, and she was upset about something, but she owned it and she apologised and she brought me flowers and a note apologising, and she did what I would do if I knew that I’d hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it,” she continued

Meghan’s annoyance wasn’t directed at Kate, but rather at palace officials who failed to quash the rumours surrounding the dispute.

“What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn’t do but that happened to me,” she lamented.

Harry comments on the flower girl dress controversy.

Royal enthusiasts were left gobsmacked when Harry revealed an alleged text exchange between Kate and Meghan in his memoir, Spare, published last year.

The Duke of Sussex detailed a dispute over the flower girl dresses for his wedding, explaining that Kate was upset because Princess Charlotte’s dress was “too baggy”.

Despite the fact that Harry and Meghan weren’t surprised by the ill-fitting dresses – they were hand-sewn in France without any fittings – he remembered Kate expressing her frustration not only about the oversized dress but also about Charlotte’s tears.

“Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy. She cried when she tried it on at home,” Kate reportedly wrote, to which Meghan responded: “Right, and I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am.Here. At KP (Kensington Palace). Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing? ”

Kate then insisted: “No, all the dresses need to be remade.”

Meghan allegedly replied: “I’m not sure what else to say. If the dress doesn’t fit then please take Charlotte to see Ajay. He’s been waiting all day.”

To this, Kate tersely responded: “Fine.”

Harry added that Kate informed Meghan she had even consulted her own wedding dress designer, Sarah Burton, about the issue, who agreed with Kate.

“Meg asked if Kate was aware of what was going on right now. With her father. Kate said she was well aware, but the dresses. And the wedding is in four days! ” Harry penned.

“Yes, Kate, I know,” Meghan supposedly retorted.

Harry has stated that Kate had issues with how Meghan was organising their wedding, including her desire for a pageboy party. “It went back and forth,” he recollected.

The Duke found Meghan “on the floor sobbing” after receiving tense text messages from Kate but reassured his fiancee that his sister-in-law “hadn’t meant any harm”.

The next day, Princess Diana’s daughter-in-law sent Meghan an apology in the form of flowers and a card.

However, it remains unclear whether the dress was adjusted or made again.

Meghan Markle’s path to the White House (and why Donald Trump could be an unlikely inspiration): Step-by-step guide to how Duchess of Sussex could use quasi-royal Nigerian tour as spring board for presidential bid

Meghan Markle’s mantra is that women can change the world.

And after her presidential-like visit to her adopted ‘homeland’ of Nigeria, her supporters increasingly believe she is destined to do it herself from the Oval Office.

Meghan’s Suits co-star Erika Alexander declared this week that the Duchess of Sussex is ‘heading to the White House‘, predicting she is the activist and advocate for women with the courage to be the Leader of the Free World.

Experts have told MailOnline that Meghan could be just a few steps from the US Presidency – as long as she takes inspiration from one of her own most vocal critics, Donald Trump, and her British prince husband is willing to become an American.

Eminent historian Christopher Phelps, an expert on US politics, told MailOnline today: ‘It would be a great story. The British prince who loved her so much he gave up his British citizenship to become an American. There would be no requirement for him to do it – but he would have to if she wanted to have any credibility’.

Her pseudo-royal tour to self-proclaimed ‘homeland’ Nigeria with Prince Harry has been viewed by some as a potential springboard for her political career.

One insider at the top of politics in liberal California told MailOnline today that the Duchess may be plotting a Donald Trump-inspired ‘queue jump’ into high office – amid speculation the US Presidency could be her ultimate aim. Mr Trump used The Apprentice to boost his profile and Fox News as a platform for his political views before he won the Republican presidential nomination. He is the only American president to have no previous political service.

‘She [Meghan] has her eyes on the prize’, the source said.

But another politico warned: ‘The buy-your-success thing is more suited as a Republican play. Meghan has political ambitions but like most celebrities or business people, they are not ready to put in the graft to get there. Maybe Oprah Winfrey could pull it off. But she’s put in the hard yards in other ways. Meghan hasn’t done anything’.

Professor Phelps, who teaches at the University of Nottingham in England, said parallels can be drawn between the former Suits star and ex-actor Ronald Reagan, who was Governor of California before he served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. Arnold Schwarzenegger also made the transition from showbiz to politics.

‘Her name will open doors but you can’t just say “You all know who I am – vote for me” – she will need to have some substance on policy. Americans want to know how she would protect their jobs, where she stand of tax and to tackle crime in their neighbourhoods’, he said.

As speculation about her political ambitions continue, this is how the Duchess of Sussex could use her profile to build a grassroots campaign to take her to Washington – and the challenges she would face on the way.

Step 1: Increased activism in the US after ‘secret’ visit to Uvalde

Experts believe that Meghan Markle’s campaigning for a career in politics began when she turned up in Uvalde after tragedy struck.

Ms Markle was spotted in May 2022 laying a bouquet of white roses at a makeshift memorial outside the Uvalde County Courthouse, not far from the scene of the senseless murders at Robb Elementary School.

She also stopped by an Uvalde community center that is hosting a blood drive, where she toured the facility and donated food, a volunteer there told DailyMail.com. ‘She did not want anybody to know who she was,’ the person said.

But nevertheless her appearance in Texas, flying in from her home in California and back again by private jet, made headlines around the world.

Meghan has not spoken publicly on gun ownership, but in 2015 was quoted in a book as being pro controls.

Step 2: Support for women’s and LGBT+ groups

Her pseudo-royal tour to Nigeria last week, her increasing presence at Invictus events and her surprise appearance in Uvalde all point to a foray into politics not being over.

Experts predict that if high office is her aim, increasing public support for women’s rights, minority groups and the LGBTQ+ communities must follow, and even taking over a related charity to show Americans that ‘she can actually run something’.

Last year she spent International Women’s Day supporting an organisation that helps expectant mothers and their children.

While there is no doubting her commitment to women’s issues, Professor Christopher Phelps has said that women, in particular, are key voters to  target, especially for Democrats.

‘The support and high turnout from women is crucial to the Democrats. Although Meghan has been a vocal supporter of them, they are no pushover’, he said.

‘She would also need to get support from labour groups and unions, women and especially black women as well as LGBT groups. There will be rivals with long standing relationships with them’.

But a senior political source told MailOnline that Meghan must do more.

‘Why would the United Auto Workers put boots on the ground for her? She hasn’t done anything for them. Democrats are all grass roots and organising’, they said.

Step 3: Ramp up Invictus appearances

A greater role in the Invictus Games could also be beneficial for Meghan because of its support for military heroes.

The Duchess of Sussex may not have accompanied Harry to the UK for the Invictus Games anniversary event this week because she is afraid that she will be booed by the British public again, a royal expert claimed.

But she has been by her husband’s side at the Games themselves and very hands on in the build up to the first winter Invictus in Canada next year.

An insider said: ‘Harry deserves a lot of credit for his Invictus Games and his work with veterans. Meghan’s supported him and it reflects well on her too’.

Step 4: More faux-royal tours of the world

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry insist that their trip to Nigeria was not a royal tour.

But from the moment they stood for the British national anthem and attended red carpet events, many saw it differently.

In fact, never mind faux-royal, the final leg of Harry and Meghan’s tour of Nigeria seemed decidedly presidential.

From the moment they touched down in Lagos, the Duke and Duchess were shadowed White House-fashion by secret servicemen muttering into earpieces, armed police officers and scowling special forces soldiers.

Not to mention their own, much smaller security team – and a smattering of anxious-looking female aides in shift dresses and Adidas trainers who trailed the Duchess.

Meghan and Harry were so delighted by the reception they received on their trip to Nigeria that they are planning more quasi-royal tours, a source has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited the country for three days last week to promote mental health initiatives and the Invictus Games, the sporting event Harry, 39, founded for wounded military veterans.

The couple visited a local charity and met with military leaders, injured soldiers and school children, all of whom welcomed them smiles and enthusiasm.

A California politico told MailOnline: ‘It felt like the first the first major step towards Meghan becoming a stateswoman. Harry took a back seat. He was her First Lady, so to speak’.

Step 5: Follow the Trump playbook and take inspiration from Ronald Reagan

Donald Trump could be an unlikely inspiration to Meghan Markle – a woman he has widely criticised.

Trump successfully made the transition from businessman and TV star to the world’s most powerful politician – using TV appearances to increase his fame and discuss his politics.

And Meghan Markle was to make it to the White House, she wouldn’t be the first California star to do it.

Reagan was Governor of California before he served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. Arnold Schwarzenegger was also Governor.

‘There is precedent for this with Ronald Reagan. It can be done. But it has to be more than a name. There has to be a vision for the country. Americans will need convincing and want to see the policies’, Prof Phelps said.

But the academic said there is a clear difference – the American public already knew where both actors stood on policy.

‘Reagan had spent years on the speaking circuit and had honed his message and ideology’, he said.

Trump was a household name in America before his political career. But The Apprentice made him famous around the world.

Prof Phelps said: ‘There is no doubt that her name brings recognition. But what Donald Trump did was to protect and cultivate his media image. He would pick up the phone to journalists to plant favourable stories in the press.

‘He became a household name across America and the world because of his role in the Apprentice. And then he was a regular on Fox News talking politics.

‘I don’t think she needs a TV show – but she will need to tell the world what she stands for. Many Americans will wonder: Does Meghan have the experience? Has she actually ever sat on boards or run organisations?’

Step 6: Millionaires Meghan and Harry need to start fundraising (with a little help from rich friends)

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are not rich enough to fund a White House winning political campaign.

Despite living in a multi-million dollar mansion in Montecito, and having made a fortune from Netflix, Spotify and Spare – they need to get more cash.

The deep pockets of friends such as Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry will help, if they are willing.

The success of Meghan’s American Riviera Orchard brand would also be crucial to funding any campaign, as would Harry’s own personal wealth.

‘You need to have very deep pockets to support a political campaign. She will need support from the donor class and for them to provide her with a campaign war chest’, Prof Phelps said.

‘Both the left and right also rely on smaller donations from ardent supporters willing to give $25 of their own money to support a politician. On its own it is not a large amount of money – but it can add up to millions of dollars’.

A source in California said that with the launch of American Riviera Orchard the Duchess of Sussex is ‘hedging her bets’ between business and politics -but it’s an approach that will fail if she is not willing to do ‘any hard yards’.

‘The whole point of climbing the political ladder is building a base and coalition as you advance. So when it comes to running for Senate, you have political resources to draw on that puts an army out on precinct walks, endorsements that carry a constituency, and influencers who can lock up those endorsements. Name recognition and self-funding just isn’t enough 99% of the time’, the said.

Step 7: Grab a safe democratic seat (but get ready for an almighty battle)

Prof Phelps believes that Meghan might consider an elected role at a county or city level ‘beneath her’.

With a safe seat in the House of Representatives or perhaps the Senate the likeliest route to Washington before a tilt at the presidency could be possible.

It has been long reported that confirmed Meghan, with Harry, has been ‘networking among senior Democrats’ with a view to building a grass roots campaign.

Last year Meghan was touted as a candidate to fill Californian Senator Dianne Feinstein’s safe seat after she died aged 90.

Rumours were abound that she and Prince Harry reportedly held a virtual hour-long meeting with the state’s liberal Governor Gavin Newsom – but he picked another candidate.

AMeghan (centre, with Prince Harry, left) has reportedly been ‘networking among senior Democrats’ with a view to building a grass roots campaign to fuel her political ambitions – with speculation the US Presidency her ultimate aim

Prof Phelps said: ‘There are plenty of safe seats for Democrats in California – but getting the nomination itself can be hard.

‘Rivals, many who have dedicated their lives to the party, are not going to say: “Oh well it’s Meghan Markle so I will stand aside”.’

A senior political source said it will be hard for Meghan. But if she gets through then the sky is the limit.

But they warned that there is a dim view of her in Joe Biden’s party because she ‘hasn’t done anything’ and isn’t willing to ‘graft’.

‘I just don’t see a path to jumping the queue.  I see it all the time – they don’t want to run for city council, and then move up the political ladder. They think they can go straight in at the top. It works about 1 per cent of the time’, they said.

The source added: ‘She’ll get killed [off] by savvy politicos who’ve done the hard yards’.

Step 8: Secure endorsement by party grandee (but the Obamas may not be keen)

Meghan and her team would also need to grab a big-name endorsement that could secure her a safe senate seat and catapult her towards Washington.

The Obamas have been viewed as the ideal people to do it – but despite Barack supporting Harry and Invictus – their relationship appears to have cooled.

In 2021 it was reported that Meghan Markle ‘desperately wanted’ to attend Barack Obama’s 60th birthday party but was not included on the guest list.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not attend the lavish do thrown by the former US president at his seven-bedroom £8million holiday home in Martha’s Vineyard.

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Meghan’s friend CBS This Morning host Gayle King, George Clooney and Jay-Z and Beyoncé all did.

But according to royal expert and author Angela Levin, who wrote Harry: Biography of a Prince, it is thought that Barack and Michelle never included Harry and Meghan on the 475 strong guest-list.

If the Obamas didn’t back the bid – another possibility could be grandee Nancy Pelosi.

Meghan wrote an open letter to Pelosi and then Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to argue for fairer paid parental leave.

‘At an alarming rate, millions of women dropped out of the workforce, staying home with their kids as schools and daycares were closed, and looking after loved ones full-time. The working mom or parent is facing the conflict of being present or being paid. The sacrifice of either comes at a great cost’, Meghan wrote.

But it emerged in 2022 that members of Pelosi’s office ‘laughed’ at the suggestion Meghan could make it in politics.

If Meghan were to defy the odds, Harry would have to become an American citizen if his wife was serious about making it to the White House.

Professor Christopher Phelps said Meghan would have no credibility if he didn’t give up his British citizenship.

‘It would be a great story. The British prince who loved her so much he gave up his British citizenship to become an American. There would be no requirement for him to do it – but he would have to if she wanted to have any credibility’, he said.

Melania Trump was born outside the US – only the second First Lady in this position after Louisa Adams, the British-born wife of John Quincy Adams, America’s sixth president between 1825 and 1829.

Melania, born in Slovenia, became a naturalised American citizen.

How a Nigerian king who Harry hailed as one of his ‘new in-laws’ is a conman twice deported from America, with a lengthy criminal record and a distinctly murky past…

Taking the microphone, Prince Harry gestured towards the Nigerian royals ranged before him, playfully calling them his ‘in-laws’.

It brought laughter from his audience. ‘I’ll skip the protocol because at this point we’re all family,’ the duke added, to more guffaws.

On reflection, though, maybe it wasn’t such a big joke after all.

The House of Windsor may have cut the Sussexes adrift but in Lagos last Sunday wealthy rulers bearing gifts and titles were effectively competing to claim Meghan for their own royal families.

But as the duke and duchess would do well to note, not everyone who came paying homage was all they seemed.

The Mail on Sunday reveals today that one of the kings is a convicted fraudster who was twice kicked out of the United States.

The venue for what one guest described as Meghan’s ‘unofficial crowning’ was a flashy fifth floor restaurant in the coastal mega-city’s latest boutique hotel. Hardly the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace but there was a red carpet, fanfare trumpets –and no shortage of ceremony.

Monarchs journeyed from all corners of Africa’s most populous nation to honour the 42-year-old former Suits actress. In Nigeria different regions continue to have monarchies, now with ceremonial roles rather than constitutional powers, representing the groups that existed before colonisation.

From the oil-rich Niger Delta region, representing the Itsekiri people, came a dashing figure in red robes, Ogiame Atuwatse III, also known as the Olu of Warri kingdom. Married to a billionaire’s daughter, he drives a Bentley and, much respected, is one of the country’s richest kings.

Like 40-year-old Ogiame, another king – the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe – had travelled far to meet the duke and duchess.

Known for his wisdom, benevolence and humility, the 83-year-old conferred on Meghan the chieftaincy title ‘Ada Mazi’ which means ‘the daughter of the Igbo ancestral palace’.

Maybe this was chancing it a bit. Meghan has revealed only that she is 43 per cent Nigerian. She hasn’t specified to which ethnic group she belongs, presumably because she doesn’t know.

When asked during an episode of her Archetypes podcast if she was Igbo or of the Yoruba people, she didn’t reply.

Not to be outdone, meanwhile, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, the 56-year-old Oluwo of Iwoland in Western Nigeria, then took centre stage.

Microphone in hand, he turned to Meghan – who was walked down the aisle on her wedding day by King Charles – and said: ‘Thank God you are one of us.’

As the Sussexes stood before the seated guests, Akanbi made a show of presenting them a series of gifts including necklaces and bracelets and robes fashioned from handwoven fabric.

And staking his own people’s claim on the duchess, he bestowed on her the Yoruba name Adetokunbo meaning ‘royalty from across the seas’.

Flamboyant even for Nigerian royalty, Akanbi drives a canary yellow McLaren supercar and is known as the Funky King.

His wife Queen Firdaus has described him as playful and jovial and says she fell in love with him at first sight. As her husband joked with Harry, she chatted to Meghan and at one point the two women posed for a picture which Queen Firdaus later posted on her Instagram account.

While it is tempting to imagine Firdaus making a glamorous addition to Meghan’s inner circle, the Sussexes might wish to think twice before inviting the royal couple to their Californian mansion – not least because Akanbi is barred for life from entering the US.

Akanbi, who while born a prince hasn’t always lived in splendour, is a convicted conman whose own people have called for his dethronement.

Four years ago, a letter from a lawyer representing the Association of Iwoland Indigenes in Diaspora (AIID) accused him of ‘conducting himself in manners which are antithetical to that of a monarch in any clime and very unbecoming of a Yoruba Oba’.

It said he assaulted another monarch Dhikrulahi Akinropo of Ogbagba during a ‘peace meeting’ to settle a land dispute. But Akanbi said that Akinropo had interrupted his speech and tried to attack him with his golden staff of office.

‘He started calling me unprintable names, pointing his staff of office at me while attempting to stick the staff into my eyes,’ said Akanbi. ‘I heavily rejected it with a force he could not withstand.’

Much worse was to come from others, though, including his ex-wife Chanel Chin, the daughter of a Jamaican reggae star, who has called him a ‘devil’ and publicly accused him of sexual assault.

The letter from the AIID to a state governor accuses Akanbi of shamefully ‘misrepresenting the interests of Iwoland’ and causing so many ‘controversies’ that it is hard to ‘imagine he ascended the throne’. It says: ‘Our clients have several reported cases of intimidation, harassments and acts of subjecting the poor indigenes of Iwoland to all sort of threats.’

It adds that the king made false allegations against Ms Chin, claiming she was ‘sleeping around with all sort of palace men’ – which she denied in a TV interview.

In fact, adds the letter, ‘the unassailable evidence at the disposal of our clients was to the effect that…Akanbi has been the one defiling Iwoland with various shameless reports of defilements of young girls and ladies in the community’.

Court records in the US reveal an extensive criminal record. He once tried to cash a forged cheque for £247,000, an ‘aggravated

felony’ to which he pleaded guilty – and ultimately left him facing the prospect of 20 years in jail and a £197,000 fine.

While the Sussexes had no inkling they were being feted by a fraudster, Akanbi’s lengthy criminal record stretches over scores of legal documents. Akanbi, then using the name Segun Adewale Adeonigbagbe, was first arrested in Boston in 1998 after he walked into BankBoston posing as a Joseph Pigott and attempted to cash the stolen £247,000 cheque from aviation company Boeing.

In a statement, Neil Hegarty of the Financial Organised Crime Task Force said he was alerted by a suspicious bank teller.

Agent Hegarty contacted the real Joseph Pigott, a successful businessman who said his mail had been stolen and that the thief had used his identity to apply for credit cards, write bogus cheques and attempt to cash real ones. The £247,000 cheque had been sent to Mr Pigott by Boeing, which immediately stopped it when the businessman rang to say he had not received it.

Surveillance footage was used to identify and arrest Akanbi, who was later charged with a second count of forging a cheque for £59,000 using the name Thomas Eyring.

These days, back in his homeland, Akanbi sits in lavish robes on a giant throne. Visitors to his palace are required to fall at his Gucci loafers. Once he boasted in an interview that a former Nigerian president ‘prostrated before me’.

In 1998, though, he claimed he was too broke to afford a lawyer. He pleaded guilty to both charges and wrote to the judge begging for leniency.

‘Please temper justice with mercy,’ he said. ‘I am not a career criminal, it was a situation beyond my control which I will never let it (sic) happen to me again. I am really sorry for doing it.’

He was jailed for 15 months in July 1998. His £1,500 fine was waived ‘because of an inability to pay’.

Deported to Nigeria in April 1999, he was banned from re-entering the US ‘without lawful authority of the government,’ specifically the Department of Homeland Security which is in charge of securing America’s borders.

While details of Akanbi’s past are murky, at some point he settled in Canada and married.

In March 2011 – just a few months before a young Meghan Markle moved to Canada and began filming Suits – he was caught attempting to cross the border into America with his wife and young son using a passport in the name of Prince Adeale Akanbi.

At first he told border agents they were heading to New York to go shopping but later changed his story saying they were going to a wedding. When the guards checked his fingerprints they discovered his prior criminal convictions and deportation.

Considered a flight risk, he was held in custody and later taken to New York where he faced a grand jury in April 2011 on one charge of ‘attempting to re-enter the United States after having been deported subsequent to a conviction for an aggravated felony’.

At this point, Akanbi was facing a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of £197,000.

He pleaded guilty and in a five-page statement before sentencing he again begged a judge for mercy, saying his ‘formative years spent in Africa were very difficult’.

He claimed his father whipped him on a weekly basis, he was

living on the streets by the age of 12 and, at 17, was sent to an institution ‘where he was chained, beaten and forced to learn Arabic’. Akanbi blamed his wife saying she had convinced him he could re-enter the US because more than a decade had passed since his deportation.

His then-wife Rakiya Saidu, who he married in 2009, wrote to the judge describing her husband as ‘a loving and caring person.’

Akanbi was sentenced to time served, deported and banned from the US for life for a second time – but it evidently didn’t stop him becoming king.

Neither has his promise to reign for more than six decades been blown off course by the various allegations against him.

If the Sussexes were seeking to expand their money-making ventures in oil-rich Nigeria, privately educated Ogiame Atuwatse, the Olu of Warri, would be a valuable contact – and a welcome addition to their social circle.

He earned a degree in international studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2006, followed by a masters in management.

In 2014 he married the daughter of late billionaire Hosa Wells Okunbo in Chelsea, London, with the bride wearing a stunning couture dress by Italian-Argentine designer Ines Di Santo, whose bespoke gowns start at £10,000.

Their reception was held at the Victoria and Albert museum, Kensington. Avid Anglophiles – Atuwatse worked for Shell in London – the couple attended King Charles’ first Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey last year.

His reign has not been without incident, however.

A few days before his coronation, the Warri crown was stolen from his private chambers.

Two rival clan chiefs who opposed his ascension were later accused of the theft. Atuwatse, who has been lauded as a ‘fresh, young blood’ by Nigerian media and has promised to improve the rights of women in a country where girls are still married off as young as 12, laughed off the theft.

He ended up using a silver crown for his coronation and now wears one of gold, replacing the stolen original which was made of coral.

The Obi of Onitsha, meanwhile, one of the oldest reigning tribal rulers in Nigeria, might also prove a valuable social and business conduit for the Sussexes.

A distinguished career as head of the Shell in Nigeria was followed by a number of directorships on various boards.

He is chairman of chemical giant Unilever‘s board of directors in Nigeria and spent many years in London, where he enjoyed a spell as Shell’s ‘ambassador at large’ based in the UK.

The Sussexes, meanwhile, who fell in love with Nigeria, have promised to return at the earliest opportunity.

‘From now on they would do well to be take heed of the Igbo’s equivalent of the ‘once bitten twice shy’ saying,’ said a guest at last week’s function.

‘It is that one who has been bitten by a snake lives in fear of worms.’

Both Archewell and the Oluwo of Iwoland were approached for comment.

Meghan Markle ‘didn’t like Britain’ and shouldn’t ‘gaslight the nation into thinking we’ve behaved appallingly towards her’, Sarah Vine tells the Mail’s YouTube show The Reaction

Meghan Markle ‘didn’t like Britain’ and shouldn’t ‘gaslight the nation’ into ‘thinking we’ve behaved appallingly towards her’, Daily Mail columnist Sarah Vine has told this week’s The Reaction.

Hosts Sarah and Andrew Pierce discussed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex‘s ‘semi-royal’ tour of Nigeria last weekend on the latest episode of the Mail’s YouTube show, which you can watch here.

The presenters suggested it was more of a ‘presidential tour’ for the likes of Meghan, 42, who was ‘never going to accept the royal life because she was always going to have to be one step behind Prince Harry‘, according to Andrew.

‘She needs to be a leading actor in her life. But I mean, that’s OK, but just be honest about it,’ said Sarah. ‘Don’t put everybody through this whole thing. Don’t gaslight an entire nation.

‘Don’t gaslight the whole of Britain into thinking that we’ve behaved appallingly towards her because that wasn’t the case. People liked her. It’s just that she didn’t like us. She didn’t want the assignment,’ insisted the columnist.

Noting how fans appeared to delight in seeing Meghan, more so than Harry, and how the mother-of-two seemed to take the lead throughout the three-day visit, Sarah referred to the Prince as a ‘beta male’.

She added: ‘It was very much [Meghan] showcasing herself and he was just sort of coming along for the ride.

‘I mean, maybe that’s what he wants in his life and it’s perfectly possible that he just wants to be a beta male.’

Sarah said that the Duchess ‘needs to be a leading actor in her life’, adding that with the tour of Nigeria, ‘she’s very much the protagonist, she’s very much the star of the show and that’s how she likes it’.

Andrew, meanwhile, agreed. He suggested the visit ‘felt more like a presidential tour’, noting that Meghan ‘thinks she’s got a potential career in democratic politics because that story broke a couple of years ago. And it felt like she was on campaign mode.’

Harry and Meghan’s tour of Nigeria, which saw them visit Lagos and Abuja at the military’s invitation, was intended to promote mental health for soldiers and empower young people.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are celebrating their ‘sugar’ wedding anniversary – but, in the six years since they wed in Windsor, their relationship with the Firm is anything but sweet

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrated their wedding anniversary today, marking six years since they tied the knot at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

The picturesque early summer wedding was watched by an estimated 1.9billion people around the world and attended by A-listers such as Oprah Winfrey, David Beckham and George Clooney.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are celebrating a ‘sugar anniversary’ because of the traditional gift given for the occasion.

According to tradition, it’s meant to symbolise the sweet story of how the couple fell head over feels for each other, along with the richness of everlasting love.

But as their fondness for one another grows and develops, their highly-publicised rifts with the royal family continues to raise questions about their rocky relationship.

Harry and Meghan have recently finished their ‘quasi- royal’ three-day tour to Nigeria from May 10 to 13

The pair announced that they were stepping down as working members of the royal family in 2020, before shortly moving across the pond to Montecito, California.

They moved there with their son Archie, who was born in London. They then welcomed a daughter in June 2021 called Lilibet Diana.

She was named after Harry’s mother Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth, who was called Lilibet by those she was close to, such as her husband Prince Philip and sister, Princess Margaret.

Harry and Meghan have recently finished their ‘quasi- royal’ three-day tour to Nigeria from May 10 to 13, which saw them miss American Mother’s Day with their children to meet with charities and officials at the Lagos State Governor’s Office.

Meghan also spoke at an event on women in leadership in Abuja, where she said it was ‘flattering’ to discover via a genealogy test that she is 43 per cent Nigerian.

Before their trip to the African country, Harry was in the UK for an Invictus Games event in London, but didn’t pop in to see his father  – who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer – during his flying visit.

His event was also just three miles away from where King Charles was at Clarence House.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Metro: ‘It’s sad, things have gone very badly wrong with Harry not seeing his father.

‘It seems to me that relations between the Sussexes and Buckingham Palace couldn’t get much worse.’

Harry had hoped to meet him during his trip, which follows a previous quick visit in February after Charles’s cancer diagnosis.

But Harry’s spokesman said at the time: ‘In response to the many inquiries and continued speculation on whether or not The Duke will meet with his father while in the UK this week, it unfortunately will not be possible due to His Majesty’s full programme.

‘The Duke of course is understanding of his father’s diary of commitments and various other priorities and hopes to see him soon.’

Harry and Meghan have made several claims about the Firm throughout the years. One month before Lilibet was born, the Sussexes sat down with chat show host Oprah – who was a guest at their wedding – to discuss ‘Megxit’.

Dubbed one of the most explosive interviews of the 2021, Harry and Meghan made several shocking claims about members of the royal family.

Their Netflix docuseries then came out the following December, where Harry said  Meghan ‘sacrificed everything she ever knew, the freedom that she had, to join me in my world’.

He then added: ‘I ended up sacrificing everything that I know to join her in her world’, a reference to him moving abroad with his wife to her home country.

Since then, the couple have made several lucrative deals with big companies such as Spotify and Harry released his book Spare in 2023.

The Duke made several claims in the book and alleged that there was a fight between him and the Prince of Wales after he called Meghan Markle ‘difficult’, ‘rude’ and ‘abrasive’.

He also branded Queen Camilla – his step-mother- ‘dangerous’ and alleged that the Princess of Wales made Meghan cry in the run-up to her wedding during a row over Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress.

Since their departure from the royal family, Meghan and Harry have taken on a slew of social activism and philanthropic roles.

Harry and Meghan are set to launch two new Netflix shows on cooking, gardening and polo as part of their ongoing $100 million deal with the streaming site.

They have two non-fiction projects in the works, which come off the back of the launch of her new lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard.

The Duchess will focus on lifestyle-centric topics like gardening and cooking in a move that will likely allow her to cross-promote her brand and the first series will see her ‘celebrate the joys of cooking, gardening, entertaining, and friendship’.

Meghan’s project has seen the Duchess create an exclusive ‘jamfluencer’ club, with only 50 of her friends being sent jars.

Stars such as Chrissy Teigen, Heather Dorak, Tracy Robbins and Kris Jenner have been sent jars of the highly-sought after jam.

Buckingham Palace appeared to take a swipe at Meghan’s latest business venture by posting an advert for its strawberry preserve days after the Duchess unveiled her product.

The question was innocuous and well-meant – but it drew an instinctively defensive response from Harry and Meghan’s top aide.

‘Hope everything goes well today,’ remarked a journalist casually.

‘What do you mean? What could go wrong?’ shot back the usually charming Miranda Barbot, seemingly affronted that anyone might suggest the event could be anything other than a roaring success.

Being on the road with the California-based Sussexes, you see, is all about positive vibes.

It was Saturday, midway through the duke and duchess’s tour of Nigeria, and we were waiting for the couple to arrive at an outdoor sports complex in Abuja for a volleyball match. Above, grey skies threatened.

‘Ah yes, rain,’ Miranda said, following our gaze upwards and realising what the journalist had meant.

She was right, though. Barring the heavens opening, the whip-smart PR guru, who helped get Barack Obama re-elected, really did have everything covered.

Whatever the true complexion of this fascinating tour – private, non-royal, quasi-royal, presidential – one thing was certain. It was controlled skilfully and with an iron hand.

Now back home in Montecito, Harry and Meghan will doubtless reflect on a job well done.

Yet it was success achieved without truly capturing the hearts of all Nigerians, many of whom were little interested in this faux-royal trip.

Others complained that access to the Sussexes was far beyond ordinary citizens. ‘It’s just for the dignitaries, the well-connected,’ came the familiar complaint.

The visit failed to excite much interest from the Nigerian media either, particularly the newspapers, which devoted notably few column inches to the couple.

Official royal tours typically feature set-pieces drawing large crowds. On this trip there were no opportunities for the public to see Harry and Meghan close at hand.

Each event was effectively held behind closed doors, with the majority accessible only to hand-picked journalists, those guaranteed to deliver fawning coverage.

In theory, the programme of events was framed around the Invictus Games, Harry’s initiative for wounded, sick and injured service personnel and veterans, which recruited Nigeria to the fold last year.

Certainly, we witnessed an upbeat Duke of Sussex on familiar turf – dispensing encouragement to wounded soldiers, engaging with children, hobnobbing with military types.

In open, affable Harry, it is easy to recognise his mother, Diana, who visited Nigeria 34 years ago and was pictured holding the hand of a leprosy patient.

Yet, for all that he gave his own bravura performance this week, Harry will find it hard to escape the feeling that he was – deliberately or otherwise – bundled out of the limelight by his wife.

It was never Meghan’s destiny to be former soldier Harry’s adjutant – she made that clear from the outset of their relationship. And, through a series of strategically well-judged moves, she made this trip her own. Locals quickly dubbed it the Meghan Show.

By the end, the duchess had emerged seeming less the ex-TV actress wife of a former royal – and more a sure-footed global stateswoman in her own right.

Perhaps it’s not such a wild leap. When Ms Barbot was hired by the Sussexes two years ago with the brief to transform their image, it was suggested by one insider that ‘it wouldn’t be a huge shock if Meghan went into politics’.

There has, of course, long been speculation that the duchess would one day like a tilt at the White House itself. If that is indeed her intention, the trip will have done her no harm at all – and might even prove a masterstroke.

The invitation to visit Nigeria – specifically to meet wounded soldiers – was originally extended to Harry by the country’s defence chief during last year’s Invictus Games. So neatly has this visit dovetailed with Meghan’s agenda, though, some might be forgiven for wondering if the trip was at least partly her plan all along.

For a start, Meghan already had a significant fanbase in Nigeria thanks to the popularity of the TV drama Suits, in which she played paralegal Rachel Zane. Her following had been established long before she met Harry.

As a senior diplomat told the Daily Mail: ‘In the House of Windsor divide, most Nigerians – if interested – side with Meghan and Harry. This is because they loved Diana and see the Sussexes as outsiders like her. And of the two, they like Meghan more because of Suits, which was huge here, much more so than in the UK.’

Then there’s Meghan’s recent discovery through a DNA test that she is 43 per cent Nigerian. When she first dropped this genealogical bombshell – in an episode of her Archetypes podcast – it gained little traction. What better way, then, to spread the word than through a carefully planned visit to the ancestral homeland of her forebears?

From the moment the couple stepped off the plane, Meghan appeared to miss no opportunity to emphasise that Nigeria is ‘my home’.

On the first day, Friday, she told an audience of schoolgirls that ‘I see myself in all of you’ while thanking the nation for ‘welcoming me home’ later that same day.Meghan suggested, too, that she would use the trip to explore her heritage, although how far she got with that was never explained. Perhaps, as some suspect, all will be revealed in a forthcoming Netflix documentary.

This interest in her heritage will surely resonate with fellow Americans. It has been well received in Nigeria on the whole and, one suspects, elsewhere in Africa.

Adeola Adenikinju, the president of Nigerian Economic Society – a respected forum for economists and social scientists – said: ‘I am proud that she has a Nigerian blood flowing through her body.

‘Meghan has been quite strong. She is not ashamed of her colour and her people. I think she would fit as a good role model for the younger generation.’

There are, however, some dissenting voices. ‘I see it [her 43 per cent Nigerian claim] as a political statement but if she is serious about it, then she will need to take further steps to prove to the general public that she is of Nigerian descent,’ said Dr Gever Verlumun Celestine, a lecturer in mass communications at the University of Nsukka.

Of the couple’s decision to visit, Dr Celestine added: ‘They have everything they need to make their lives comfortable so I feel that they can hardly relate with the challenges Nigerians face.’

Such criticisms aside, never were Meghan’s credentials as a stateswoman more evident than at a panel discussion on Saturday, the second day of the visit. To some at least, she sounded quite simply like a politician.

In front of her were 50 of Nigeria’s top female leaders from politics, the media and business – and they lapped up every word.

She spoke of the motherhood-career balance and highlighted the importance of women’s leadership and empowerment ‘in driving positive change globally’.

And yet again there was talk of her Nigerian roots.

An oil company communications manager, Chinaza Unwakwe, a fan of the British royals, said: ‘I think the Nigerian heritage talking point was a good communication opportunity utilised well. Meghan has a bigger personality than Harry so it’s only natural for her to steal the show.

‘Harry tends to take a laidback approach when it comes to their dual appearances. Classic British guy. I think of it this way: She chose the limelight – he didn’t.’

‘I’m an avid follower of the Royal Family,’ he continued, ‘but I wasn’t keen on this trip. I am not interested because my country’s situation is bad.

‘We have more pressing issues – rocketing inflation and security –and I do not see how a visit by Harry and Meghan will help us.’

But as the couple relax, reunited with their children in their Montecito mansion, others are watching to see what exactly the Sussexes – and more particularly Meghan herself – are planning next.
